I actually quite liked all the detail you went in to, Arlo! I've always enjoyed hearing you talk about pikmin throughout the years, but I was astonished by the level of thought and effort you put into this retrospective. You even pointed things about the game play and the world I never noticed before! Kudos to your artists friends for the lovely contributions as well! Looking forward to A Big Fat Review of Pikman 2: This Time It's Pik-sonal.
My most traumatic childhood gaming experience was accidentally sending my whole army into a pool of water, hearing their cries and watching a mass of Pikmin spirits rising from the water, knowing they blindly followed me and the death of hundreds of Pikmin was solely my fault.
But they wouldn't have existed without you. Easy come, easy go. The joy they had in their short lives was a gift you gave them, and nothing can erase the experiences they shared together.
Losing any Pikmin was and is a big deal for me too. They are cute little creatures, who look for guidance and safety in Olimar. Betraying that trust by killing them does make me feel pretty bad 😅
Man the first time I had a Pikmin die, and the Little Ghost came up with that pitiful cry, I think that might have been the first time I ever felt my heart dropped to the pit of my stomach. I didn't cry or anything, but it really caught me off guard
ARLO YOUR BIG FAT REVIEWS GIVE ME LIFE!! Seriously I have rewatched/listened to your Paper Mario Origami King, Pokèmon Sword/Shield, and Arceus videos many times because they're just so cozy for the ears and interesting to listen to!! So excited for this!!
It got me to pick the game back up again after a month and start a new file, and now I'm a really big fan. Give it a try. Regardless of how you do it, even if it's the Pikmin 3 Demo or emulation or homebrew, it's always worth giving it a shot.
Seeing the different colored onions in the perfect ending was so magical to experience as a kid. The atmosphere of these games is so mysterious and the implication that there are MANY more species of pikmin than the three used in the game is so damn cool.
2023 and we still have only seen: Red Yellow Blue Purple White Rock Winged Is rather interesting. We have only seen 5 (6 if you count the master onion) but there are clearly more than that on PNF-404.
That's why I was so disappointed with 3 and 4 just giving 1 multi colored onion. I really liked having a base camp with my ship and all he onions with their own colored Pikmin community inside
Just really want to say a huge thanks Arlo for making another one of these big reviews, I suffer quite badly from Anxiety and night terrors and your voice really helps me to relax and sleep at night, however I have listened to your BOTW review more times than I care to count now (on and off anyway) and I really appreciate having another long video to put on. If you ever get time to make another one, I would love to hear your extended thoughts on paper Mario the thousand year door!
You've got to be the only youtuber who still gets significant viewership on extremely long videos aka, your reviews. That's very impressive and speaks for your works quality. I've been dealing with anxiety for the first time in my life the last 7 months and it's horrific. I'm learning to deal with it as we all do, I appreciate you sharing some of your personal struggles (sickness, insomnia etc.). And I hate that you have to deal with that. But it really does help me when you share that. It's like okay, people in my life struggle but they find a way, arlo too. It may sound silly and I'm not even talking about pikmin but idk just wanted to share some personal thoughts myself as a fan and fellow gamer lol.
The problem with this youtuber is that he is doing only nintendo crap. For me nintendo games are shit for children with such a simple mechanics I feel like everytime I play their game they just calling me stupid. Try Whitelight, Joseph Anderson and Noah Caldwell-Gervais all of those have such a great writing they put Arlo in lower tier. Joseph Anderson have even a video on Mario Odyssey and the twist in his video is so fucking good that was the time I actually started to hate nintendo. Well apart for Pokemon. Gamefreak should be gunned down for what they are doing to that series.
I've never even played any of the Pikmin games, but your passion for them is enough for me to watch these videos. And who knows maybe I'll end up playing it
As a kid, I always imagined that countdown playing every night before going to bed leading up to Christmas with me falling asleep as the number ticked lower!
A big fat review of every pikmin game (2,3, and 4 when its out), especially since now they're available on the switch and getting a bit more attention, would be great.
Pellet posies go even further by drawing your eyes up to the target like pellet, and being right in line with the natural arc of your throw, you learned that you can throw Pikmin up onto things to attack them. It also teaches about critical weaknesses, because if you throw up onto the pellet, your Pikmin will immediately defeat the flower, whereas charging into the stem they have to attack a few times. It really is a microcosm of great game design in a single element.
I know this video is a little bit old to be commenting on it, but I just wanted to point out that the Yellow Pikmin sacrifice to the final boss is not the best way to stun him, as that stun animation does not last long at all (as you described). If you toss a bomb pikmin at him when he is awake and walking about, the yellow pikmin will toss the bomb at his face then run back to your party. If you manage to time it out right so that the bomb is tossed into his open mouth during his attack animation, his tongue will slap himself and he will be stunned long enough to get him down to half health if not lower.
I know this comment is a little bit old to be replying to, but I just wanted to point out that the better stun can also be achieved by making him eat a bomb rock that isn't being held by a pikmin. This is somewhat easily accomplished by setting them up early like he mentioned, then simply whistling them when the bulblax is about to eat them. This method was actually also shown in the video, though he didn't verbally mention it, and the clip was fairly brief so it's fair to have missed it.
I know this comment and the replies to it are a little bit old to be teaching the difference in proper etiquette on UA-cam and on a forum, but it’s frowned upon in forums because a comment in an old thread moves the entire old thread to the top of the forum where everyone opens it thinking it’s new or to chastise the asshat who made the comment and they have to read through a bunch of old, possibly outdated, and common knowledge to everyone but you content and it’s fine to do this on UA-cam because the fact that you moved back in with your ex 6 months ago and she doesn’t allow devices to be used when she is home so you have no idea where the rest of the world is or how things are going in the world so you were continually asking and finally able to convince your parents to let you move back in with them after “The incident” that involved human feces being used for “art” on their living room walls and you’ve rejoined to world and come here to comment on old shit and expect us to have empathy for your situation and none of these things you’ve done to ruin any chance at starting adulthood on a good note including the self loathing replies to “old” content cause the rest of the world to be punished for your mistakes like the forums do.
After watching this review, it makes me develop an appreciation for the Wii version of this game that addressed many of these issues such as bomb rocks being an interference and the 100 Pikmin message! I had no idea the original Pikmin was this rough.
A 4 hour Pikmin review is the best Christmas gift I could have ever received. Thank you Arlo! Edit: The painted story cards are an awesome style for Arlo, I would love for him to keep these moving forward!
I never considered playing pinkmin before, but I always loved watching Arlo talk about how much he loved it. Watching this video and seeing the pinkmin 4 hype, I’d thought I’d try it out. I just can’t put it down. I am sucked into the world and its characters. There is so much more to these games than I ever thought. Just wow.
The minute I saw this I immediately clicked. 4 hours or not I'm so invested. Pikmin is my favorite video game of all time. I have great memories with the series and cannot wait for 4.
Best Arlo video in my mind and I’ve seen almost all of them (even the hey Pikmin one) Arlo I don’t even like most Nintendo stuff and I still watch your stuff because you’re relatable, funny, and have made me feel a lot better at not great moments. Keep making videos Arlo I’ll probably watch them no matter what as long as you’re you
I loved this video. I especially loved the personal and nostalgic love for the series you have approach rather than a 'pro-Pikmin approach'. I love putting on long podcasts and stuff as I do things like folding laundry or doing dishes, and I used this video throughout the week in 30-minute chapters here and there.
Okay so I haven’t finished watching yet, but I am at the 3:13:18 mark and Arlo has yet talk about this, but I have to say, the throwing mechanics in Pikmin 1 has to be my favourite. He mentioned that throwing can be slow, and yes it is, if you do it by just pressing A. By moving the Pikmin close to you with the C-stick you’re pretty much able to throw as fast as you’re able to push the A-button which is immensely satisfying!
A reason i did not like the wii version. Made the controls harder for me. Been a while tbh but I remember u cant really move ur pikmin and trow at the same time like u can do normally. Makes dealing with enemies easyer
I love the way you paint a picture and make me feel all of the warm and snuggly nostalgia. Even through a rough childhood, games were my escape. Can we all go back to GameCube days and our childhoods please?!
I saw this video get announced on your Patreon years ago and was really looking forward to it. Honestly thought it was cancelled but I'm super hyped to see that you finally finished it! Can't wait to watch it when I have time
Took me a bit to get to it but man was this a really wonderful, worthwhile experience Arlo. I love hearing you talking about the things you’re passionate about, not to mention talking in general. You’re articulate but never lose a fun and realistic manner of discussing things. Well done as always. I look forwards to whatever is next, especially a new Big Fat Review!
Projects? It's just a review? Thing is of all ironies, is it that even really? He doesn't even issue a score. Is it an 8/10? 6/10? I mean don't get me wrong, I appreciate his efforts but this sort of oceanic voyage to nowhere 'style' of reviewing is not my cuppa, sorry.
@netweed09 He's stated previously that he doesn't like giving scores because it can be taken the wrong way. Some people see a 6/10 as decent, others may see it as insulting, but either way it usually misses the point of a review. There's no complexity in a 10/10 - it doesn't tell you anything specific about the game, it just says that the reviewer loves it
@@ediblenebulas1164 Mm, Okay. That last line is really all I needed really but I guess I just grew up with the 'Traditional' style of reviewing and that's what is ingrained into me. I mean, I prefer that but it is interesting to see someone put so much time behind something with no Quantitative gauge, pretty Niche in this ever hectic day n age where what 99% of users do is flip straight to the score.
@netweed09 I know what you mean! I'm big on album reviews so I always used to be super judgemental on what I'd listen to as to whether it got perfect scores or not. I missed out on a lot of great material for a long while because of that. I think they both have their merits - long reviews and simple scores
Holy crap! This review has been 2 years in development going off that Did You Know Gaming segment!! Amazing dedication Arlo, I'm so happy you were able to get this project out finally!!
When I saw how long this was, I assumed it would be an review of the ENTIRE Pikmin series. Imagine my surprise when 2 hours in, we're just getting started on the Forest of Hope. But I love it
I just watched you talk about a game I rented once twenty years ago and didn't care for for four hours and change and remained super interested the whole time because you introduced everything I needed to know about each topic before expanding upon it and that's extremely tough to do while remaining entertaining. Fabulous work as always.
2:44:43 i think the wolliwog rant helped me realize that the “missing secondary feature” for blue pikmin should be like. a hardened carapace or some way to describe an inability to be crushed. if blue pikmin had this ability, they’d be like how red pikmin are for firey blowhogs
Maybe only while blue pikmin are in water for balancing purposes, but I like the pitch. They did this with rock pikmin in Pikmin 3 and it's a definitely really strong ability given rocks are viewed as the MVPs of that game.
You know, Arlo, you cant imagine how emotionally attached Olimar gets to the Pikmin. He canonically named *EVERY* *SINGLE* *PIKMIN* he EVER owned. Imagine how HE feels when they die. Like, "NO LITTLE TIMMY! YOU MONSTROUS BULBEAR! HOW COULD YOU?!"
I absolutely adore it when people talk about things that they love and are passionate for! In this case, I don't play pikmin, and might not ever until 4 comes out. But it was really fun listening to this and being introduced to new ideas!
I was gifted Pikmin 1+2 on Switch for Christmas, and this has been the perfect video to watch after beating it! I'd never played a Pikmin game before, and learnt the hard way about the reactive log entries when I had a bomb rock accident a few days in while still getting the hang of the controls. I was traumatised at losing so many cute lil Pikmin, and then retraumatised when I saw the log entry at the end of the day.
The New Play Control (Wii version) of Pikmin has the ability to select what colour of Pikmin you want to throw when holding a Pikmin... and you can select between leaf, bud, or flower of a colour too.
i love this video 3 hours in, but as someone with a basic knowledge of aerodynamics i wince each time i see him constantly saying "all this *part does is make it fly a little straighter or smooth out its shape, why is it mandatory" it is a rocket and has to escape the atmosphere and survive reentry, king
The first pikmin game gave me such a feeling of being alone (in a good way!). When I was a kid I would make a tiny step forward into the wilderness and immediately run back when I encountered something new I thought might be dangerous. The world of pikmin is pretty cold and cruel behind the cute little character designs 😢
Ahh me too with pikmin 2, exploring the second and third locations you unlock and encountering gigantic spiders or large beetles that wanted to gobble me up. I’d run back as fast as I could and collect myself
This was more than enjoyable to listen too/watch, please make more big fat reviews on games you're passionate about. I'm the kind of guy who LOVES analyzing things from every angle, and you are one of if not my most favorite "review/discussion" channel. It was a joy to hear you gush about every single minute detail. And because of you, maybe I'll give the Pikmin games a shot. I've really enjoyed 4's demo so far. Stay awesome and never change, Arlo. EDIT: Yesterday (mid January, 2024) I finally took the plunge and bought Pikmin 1 and 2, and I'm really enjoying I so far!! This series is criminally underrated for how poorly it's sold over the years. If you haven't played it, TRY IT NOW.
From what I understand, bomb rocks were going to be something all pikmin can use, but they decided to change it to an ability exclusive to yellow pikmin because the improved throwing range of yellow pikmin didn't come into play as prominently as the other two's abilities.
I think the Distant Spring might have been a bathhouse in the past, and not just because of all the water. The bottle in the Forest Navel looks like a bottle of Ramune, which is a distinctly Japanese soft drink, and the walls of the Spring are mostly sharp and angular in design, much like the baths in a Japanese bathhouse, of which there are many.
I have to say, listening to Arlo go off on a topic, oddly helped me focus on working on a revision for a project for my arch Design class, DO MORE MEGA REVIEWS ARLO

Pikmin (especially 3) taught me how to be a more effective manager in my real life job and also as a dad of 8 kids. Coordinating different captains to different goals and then assigning different Pikmin to separate activities within those goals... it really helped me wrap my head around multitasking & delegating responsibilities for maximum efficiency. Sometimes games are just fun, but here, it actually benefited my life.
Arlo, I recently decided to replay through this and its sequel joyfully and saw this video pop up and have loved your commentary. EXACT same thoughts about everything! I always love coming back to these classics, cautiously excited for 4 coming out. Also can’t wait to see your review of Pikmin 2 and wondering if you will compare it to its surrounding games…
As someone who's played Pikmin since my infancy, and grew up with it as well, this will be on my small list of videos I will continually return to whenever I need to have some background noise/something interesting to watch. Kudos to your artists friends for the lovely contributions as well!
Looking forward to A Big Fat Review of Pikman 2: This Time It's Pik-sonal.
I thought the paper mario review was long but you just made an entire movie. Kudos to you.

The BotW review in its totality was close at about 3 and a half hours. He just broke it up at first and then put out a complete video.
My most traumatic childhood gaming experience was accidentally sending my whole army into a pool of water, hearing their cries and watching a mass of Pikmin spirits rising from the water, knowing they blindly followed me and the death of hundreds of Pikmin was solely my fault.

This absolutely obsessive level of attention to detail and mechanics is just the sort of passion Pikmin engenders when it really clicks.
arlo has such a way of wording things that I wanna try this multi decade old game
You should there is no game or series quite like like Pikmin
It got me to pick the game back up again after a month and start a new file, and now I'm a really big fan.
Give it a try. Regardless of how you do it, even if it's the Pikmin 3 Demo or emulation or homebrew, it's always worth giving it a shot.
Play it! It's a great game
If you haven't already you should.
I beat it literally a half hour ago at the time of writing this and all I can say is play it! Go for the wii version though!
Arlo has made a review of a game longer than it takes me to beat that game. I’m legitimately impressed and delighted
if you took the maximum amount of time on all 30 days to play pikmin 1, by the time this video ended you'd be on day 18 already
@@ilexdiapason you don’t need all days to beat it though, for example my record if I recall is 13 days
@@budderguy2128 and that isn't even very fast!
It shows how fucking great this game is
Seeing the different colored onions in the perfect ending was so magical to experience as a kid. The atmosphere of these games is so mysterious and the implication that there are MANY more species of pikmin than the three used in the game is so damn cool.
Even better, every game explores more of those unseen onions!
2023 and we still have only seen:
Red
Yellow
Blue
Purple
White
Rock
Winged
Is rather interesting. We have only seen 5 (6 if you count the master onion) but there are clearly more than that on PNF-404.
@@MC-bo6ql and in pikmin4 we might see more!
That's why I was so disappointed with 3 and 4 just giving 1 multi colored onion. I really liked having a base camp with my ship and all he onions with their own colored Pikmin community inside
1 out of every 100 copies of the original Pikmin game came with a bag of seeds that Nintendo claims will "grow into a pikmin"
I did the same thing ❤️his voice is perfect for listening and sleeping. But what also helped is water sounds and listening to the Bible app!
I adore Arlo's voice. It's just so friendly.
oh me too, the amount of times Ive gone to sleep to his botw review is crazy, I havent even watched the whole thing because Im not a zelda fan lol
I'm so excited for the possibility of more big fat reviews. Even if they are fewer and far between, they're some of my favorite style of videos.
Much love to you all ❤️
Lots of youtubers get millions of views on multi hour long retrospectives. There's a big market for it.
Nah, you've just never heard of Whitelight. One of his most watched videos is a 7 hour analysis of Death Stranding.

And who knows maybe I'll end up playing it
playing each pikmin at least once is a must.
Pikmin 3 Deluxe has a GREAT demo on switch. It’s worth trying it out at least!
I recommend pikmin 1 over 2 and 3.
@@mzywica A valid opinion, as the first game is definitely the best laid out, though 1's control scheme is rather dated and it's harder to get a copy.
@@VantageEmblem it's hard as hell to get a pikmin 2 copy too. Pikmin 3 is good, and easy to get. I just prefer pikmin 1
People talk about the Sonic drowning music being anxiety inducing, but that Pikmin end-of-day countdown timer is something else
As a kid, I always imagined that countdown playing every night before going to bed leading up to Christmas with me falling asleep as the number ticked lower!
Arlo should do more big fat reviews. They're stupidly long, and I could listen to him forever. Suggestions: Metroid Prime and, maybe, Pikmin 4.
Don't forget Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.
Also, hell yeah on hearing him talk about Metroid Prime 1 for 4 hours!
A big fat review of every pikmin game (2,3, and 4 when its out), especially since now they're available on the switch and getting a bit more attention, would be great.
@@rin9130 Heck, yeah!
@@generalcjg That's what I'm talk'n'bout!

The largest and most thorough review of Pikmin you'll find online. Well done, Arlo!

2:26 it'a nice to have confirmation after all these years that Arlo apparently just chooses to be shirtless every video
Just wow.
Man this was the big secret for so long, congrats on finishing this monster!
A 4 hour long video for pikmin? Christmas really did come early this year.
This was Christmas eve a Singing news round-up would be the buffet
Love how passionate you are about this game. Hearing your analysis was so fun
Arlo's love of Pikmin 1 is justified. I played it recently as an adult and going in completely blind it is such a blast.
Pikmin rarely as much love as I think it deserves. But I can always count on you to give this beautiful series the recognition it deserves.
Yeah, once i learned this it made throwing in succession waaay easier
A reason i did not like the wii version. Made the controls harder for me. Been a while tbh but I remember u cant really move ur pikmin and trow at the same time like u can do normally. Makes dealing with enemies easyer
This was one of the best Pikmin reviews ever thanks Arlo and the amazing team that worked on this video arlo keep
Up the amazing work
I love the way you paint a picture and make me feel all of the warm and snuggly nostalgia. Even through a rough childhood, games were my escape. Can we all go back to GameCube days and our childhoods please?!
I saw this video get announced on your Patreon years ago and was really looking forward to it. Honestly thought it was cancelled but I'm super hyped to see that you finally finished it! Can't wait to watch it when I have time
I was looking for the bowblax comment and I almost forgot youtube did the weird handle thing out of nowhere
So funny how someone so wholesome and nice can have a fan so evil and wicked.
When arlo starts pumping out his projects, that’s when things get real

But I love it
I just watched you talk about a game I rented once twenty years ago and didn't care for for four hours and change and remained super interested the whole time because you introduced everything I needed to know about each topic before expanding upon it and that's extremely tough to do while remaining entertaining. Nothing I love more than seeing Arlo talking passionately about something he loves!
i’ve never felt related to more right now, you hit point after point on why i love these games thank you Arlo for this amazing video
I listened to this entire video and I cannot believe how much effort went into this, this is amazing
I mean, Winged Pikmin are resistant to crushing (not as much as Rocks, but they are) so why not make Blues crush resistant in water?
This is... this is just incredible. Thank you so much Arlo for making this, you just made my day, my week, my month, maybe even the entire year
You know, Arlo, you cant imagine how emotionally attached Olimar gets to the Pikmin. He canonically named *EVERY* *SINGLE* *PIKMIN* he EVER owned. Imagine how HE feels when they die. Like, "NO LITTLE TIMMY! YOU MONSTROUS BULBEAR! HOW COULD YOU?!"
This was a great surprise. My man worked way too hard on this and made something incredible
I'm glad to see all the new pikmin fans here😁 Pikmin is a great series. Glad you like like old games!
Sounds like a lot of fun 👍
The New Play Control (Wii version) of Pikmin has the ability to select what colour of Pikmin you want to throw when holding a Pikmin... and you can select between leaf, bud, or flower of a colour too.
That mechanic was introduced in pikmin 2 and thankfully they never got rid of it because it is such a nice quality of life change.
Easily the best version of the game. Pointer controls and pikmin go together very well
can’t wait to finish my 12 hour shift and just binge this at home in my room with a nice bowl of soup, thank you arlo
For some reason this resonates strongly with me.
I love Pikmin so much, this has become one of my comfort videos I can put on when I’m not feeling well
i love this video 3 hours in, but as someone with a basic knowledge of aerodynamics i wince each time i see him constantly saying "all this *part does is make it fly a little straighter or smooth out its shape, why is it mandatory" it is a rocket and has to escape the atmosphere and survive reentry, king
After 2 weeks of picking away at this video I can finally close the tab. This was truly an amazing feat of a video. Thank you!
lmao i'm on the same boat
I think the Distant Spring might have been a bathhouse in the past, and not just because of all the water.
The bottle in the Forest Navel looks like a bottle of Ramune, which is a distinctly Japanese soft drink, and the walls of the Spring are mostly sharp and angular in design, much like the baths in a Japanese bathhouse, of which there are many.
I have to say, listening to Arlo go off on a topic, oddly helped me focus on working on a revision for a project for my arch Design class, DO MORE MEGA REVIEWS ARLO
It’s the fact that not all of us here love Pikmin, but we all love Arlo enough to listen to him ramble about it for four house. We love ya Arlo💙
I don't know about everybody else but I for one would LOVE to see this kind of video done on every pikmin game. Obviously you put a lot of time into this so I'd understand if we had to wait a while for each but this was so nice to watch.
red pikmin having noses is what contributes to their high attack power, it acts like a spike since pikmin attack by headbutting! or at least, thats what i like to think
Even after fully watching this video I found myself coming back to it this is definitely one of my favorite Reviews. I love videos that go in Insane detail on any topic.
God I loved this; getting a robust sense of your thoughts and feelings on the game's elements on such a detailed level is wonderful.

This was an absolute joy to watch through. I loved watching all of it and it was funny and entertaining throughout the whole 4 hours. I hope to see this again with all the other Pikmin games :).
