    While they probably won't be the exact same, this series is great for prepping my non-rotor head for the Mi-24 Hind :) Thanks for giving this bird some love, most tutorials on the Hip are aging.

    Alright I've made it so far to video 9 and again can't thank you enough. I did NOT think I'd sit down and actually watch these but learning choppers has really re-sparked that aviation bug in my. These are so much more rowdy I really enjoy the challenge vs winged aeroplanes they seem like easy mode now :)
    I can't believe we're hours into training and haven't even touched a pylon yet. So much to learn, you sir are a wealth of knowledge.

    This has made setting up SAM sites with CTLD so much easier especially on windy days. Since there's no trim buttons to assign like the Hind, I assign the heading knob and altitude up/down to my trim hat.

      Thank you for the kind words!
      The response from the community has been nothing short of amazing. More views will come with time. I've started to see people recommending my videos elsewhere and that's just an awesome feeling.

    Wow this is exactly the tutorial I needed for the Mi8! I can fly it ok but the trimming and AP always confused me a bit. Having flown the hind around and got used to that I thought i'd return to this and see if I could improve with the '8'. You got a sub from me and I hope you get many more! (Good pacing on the tutorials btw, not slow but not so fast I miss something)

    Thank you for this. This and the Hover video helped me a lot to understand how to tame the Mi-24.

      Eventually I will do a hover video specifically for the Hind as well. There are (as you no doubt encountered) some differences in things like ground stability and forward visibility that make it more challenging. But I'm really glad this one helped!

    Can we use the magic of Lua to write a mission where the pilot is informed they're travelling from A to B, but at a predetermined point someone shouts "Birds!", there's a bang, both engines stop and your success criterion is actually to land intact?
    I have in mind a campaign of this nature which basically tests and recognises how well the player/pilot has understood the Mi-8's systems and procedures

    • @vsTerminus
      @vsTerminus  Рік тому

      Yes, failures can be scripted without even needing lua to trigger under various circumstances. It's a little clunky but you can do it.

    Hi. I've just bought the Mi-8 module and I came across this series of videos and what a godsend, thanks for your great work.
    I have a question regarding autopilot modes. I cannot get altitude hold to work! I make sure I am not ascending or descending before clicking on the altitude hold button. The button depresses but the green light is not illuminated and the altitude hold is not engaged. Any ideas? I have rewatched your video a couple of times but, other than pressing the altitude hold button, you don't say much more about it.

    • @vsTerminus
      @vsTerminus  11 місяців тому

      The other modes are working, right? Best advice I can offer is to set your trim and keep adjusting it until the helicopter is basically flying level without the Alt Hold AP enabled, then try to turn it on.
      Also make sure you turned on the Doppler (right triangle panel). I can't remember off the top of my head but it might rely on that.

    • @nialball9023
      @nialball9023 11 місяців тому +1

      Hi
      Thanks. The doppler is turned on as I go through both triangle panels during start up. I have been flying from a cold start so I maybe I'll try a hot start and see if that makes any difference. At least if it works that would point to something I didn't turn on. 👍🏻

    • @nialball9023
      @nialball9023 11 місяців тому +1

      BTW, yes, the other modes are working fine.

      @nialball9023 11 місяців тому +1

      Hi Terminus
      I have tested this by doing a hot start and the altitude hold works fine. If I do a cold start it doesn't work. I will go through your tutorial again but I'm pretty sure I'm not missing anything! It's getting annoying but I will persevere but if you do thnk of anything, please let me know.
      Nial

      @vsTerminus  11 місяців тому +1

      Interesting! Could be a bug, could be something I missed in the cold start tut. I rarely use that mode so who knows. I'll try it out next time I fly and see if I can figure it out, otherwise good luck!

    How does this work with springless sticks and pedals?

  • @tedwaetford
    @tedwaetford 3 роки тому +1

    hi, how do you get the system to maintain forward cyclic? do you have to trim first? (and thereby lose your hover trim?)

    • @vsTerminus
      @vsTerminus  3 роки тому

      Yes, that's correct. Hold your cyclic where you want it for stable flight and press and release the Trimmer Button, then return your joystick to its center.
      I used to be more apprehensive about losing my takeoff trim. I would hand-fly entire missions because of it. Now I've learned to not worry about that. Trim often and make small adjustments to the cyclic. As you slow for landings you will naturally find that takeoff trim position again.
      Perhaps that is something I will have to make a video about.
      Thanks for the comment!

    • @tedwaetford
      @tedwaetford 3 роки тому

      @@vsTerminus thanks for that insight. I was doing the same! I started trimming and using autopilot on travel legs, and it's certainly much better. But the un-synchronised cyclic was annoying. I then tried reducing the springs and increasing the dampers in my vkb gf, so it stays in position, and fly without trim at all. I'm finding this the most realistic and intuitive. Very easy to make adjustments while flying. You should try it. Only downside is can't fly planes without converting back.

    First of all very useful video👍🏻
    I only have one question about the direction hold channel. If iam in a straight flight with a slight slip to the left. If i want to engage the autopilot direction hold i have to stop giving anti torque, however if i do that the helicopter is logically turning even more to the left so its almost impossible to turn on the direction hold. Is that just a normal „problem“ which the pilot has to deal with or am i doing something wrong?

    • @jurgenh.7980
      @jurgenh.7980 Рік тому +1

      I dont know if there is a proper solution for this but I have a workaround.
      When I am in straight level fly and ready to engage AP i just check the amount of (probably right) rudder I have to give to have no drift. After that I release the rudder, let the helicopter snap to whatever direction (most likely a bit left) and engage direction AP right after. Then I start to turn the adjustmend knob into the direction of the rudder input you want. If you continue turning the AP will trim the rudder as well. If you reached your desired trim status you switch it off again, properly readjust your course and kick it in again. With that you have the right course plus a nicely trimmed rudder as well. Problems arise if you change collective though of course.

    Great Video series!
    Heading hold, how do I set a new heading? Say that I’m hovering with my nose to the north. I then want to change heading to the East and have the autopilot hold this new heading. When I turn on the heading hold with a large amount of rudder input it doesn’t seem to be able to hold this new heading.

    • @ScaredPilot
      @ScaredPilot 3 роки тому

      It's a limitation of the current sim implementation, in conjunction with a bug.
      In the real aircraft, there are weight sensors in the pedals, putting your feet's weight onto the pedals transitions the yaw autopilot to override mode. In this mode the heading hold and the yaw pedal force trim stops, the pilot then manually position and stabilizes the aircraft to a new heading, then lift the feet off the pedals, so force trim and yaw heading hold re-engages and holds the new heading.
      The transition is not implemented properly in the sim, there is no "feet on" hotkey and you have to displace the pedal to do the transition. It also does not work properly if you turned off the rudder trimmer, it may be difficult to allow the yaw autopilot to work in the first place.

    Good video. I have a question. Some time when put more collective on some situation. The main autopilot turns off by itself and betty start screaming left generator failed etc. why the main autopilot turns off. Does it reaches the limit or what else cause it?

    • @edburrows2439
      @edburrows2439 4 роки тому +2

      If you add too much collective too rapidly you cause the main rotor RPM to decrease until the engine compensates. If the rotor RPM drops too low before the engine has time to respond the generator will trip off until the RPM increases back up again, which in turn causes the autopilot to turn off. Try to anticipate and avoid such rapid increases in collective to avoid the situation. These are a great set of videos - have fun learning the module.

    • @sniperwolfpk5
      @sniperwolfpk5 4 роки тому

      @@edburrows2439 thx that makes sense

    • @vsTerminus
      @vsTerminus  4 роки тому +1

      @@sniperwolfpk5 Rotor RPM has to stay above ~88% or your generators will fail. Ed's advice is solid. Make slower adjustments to your collective and the engine will have an easier time keeping up. Also try to avoid vertical takeoffs unless you have no choice. It is much easier on the helicopter to enter a hover at 3-5meters and then pitch forward and pick up speed before climbing. Same idea when slowing down, slower is better and transitioning into a hover while in ground effect will be easier on the helicopter than transitioning at 50m in the air.
