Thanks so much for your MI-8 tutorials. They really have enabled me to get the most out of this module. I thought I would share my experience with sling loads to add to your info. You touch on most of these. 1. A good hover trim is essential. Extra time spent here will payback later. 2. I tend to use the overlay only to get the altitude right when first approaching the load. After that I listen to the crew chief, Taking your eyes off the ground for a millisecond is too long. 3. I get to 2/3 to 3/4 rope length in altitude. The least time spent taking tension leads to a cleaner lift reducing sway. 4. When approaching the load line up an object in the distance or a line on the ground so you can approach the load without always having to focus on the load. 5. Then you just need to listen to the crew chief for left-right adjustments and distance to go forward. 6. Approach very very slowly. And final slow down at the 3m call. I find you then barely need to hover then for the hook up. 7. With altitude at ~3/4 rope length there's not much tension to finally take up. ps. If you haven't already you really should get a G2. Absolutely stunning immersive experience. Plus you can look out the window at your load :-) cheers
Great info! Thank you for sharing! I have been thinking about VR a lot lately and it's something I want to get but it's a complicated issue for me. My CPU and motherboard and RAM are 8 years old. I need to drop a couple grand on computer upgrades before I can even run a VR headset. Then I have to consider that the G2 is a WMR headset and I don't want to deal with that. But the Index can't compete with the G2's resolution... So I am mostly just hoping Valve announces an Index V2 lol
@@vsTerminus Honestly all the worry about WMR is unfounded. I went from Oculus, and I was seriously concerned about all the negativity online about WMR. Excellent video. I've been really enjoying your tutorial series for the Hip. You can modify the ..\Mods\aircraft\Mi-8MTV2\Cockpit\Scripts\CargoIndicator\CargoIndicator_page.lua file to move the Cargo Indicator around the screen (this works for the Huey too). Mine sits about screen center and is much more usable than the default position. Every update will reset the lua file, so you'll need a way to replace it after update, such as OvGme.
I love the campaigns and missions where your faction is set to Russian and so the loadmaster's voice is also in Russian regardless of the aircraft settings
Great tutorial as always, I learn so much from your explanations. I have a couple of questions though regarding long distance sling loading. I am currently in a mission where i need to sling load multiple cargos to a site and the distance is between 20-30 miles. What would you consider a safe operating speed before you risk snapping the line? Right now I find 90kph the safest but is there anything i am missing that could increase this speed safely? Also any tips on how to handle your sling load during the transition from flight to a hover as I find this the trickiest and either snap the line or enter a vortex ring rapidly. If you ever consider doing a tutorial on longer sling load distances and what you need to be aware of this would be a great help
90kph is absolutely a good speed and should be safe in almost any weather. The manual doesn't provide any recommended speeds, but in my experience you should be OK at 130kph in good weather. I wouldn't go any faster than 150kph. For transitioning to hover or on approach to land the manual does offer some advice: Double your usual approach distance. Give yourself twice as much time to slow down as you would without the external load. ETL begins to go away somewhere around 50-60kph so you should be ready at that point to start adding collective. As soon as you hear or feel vibrations (from Transverse Flow) that's your cue to smoothly increase collective. Keep an eye on your VVI and err on the side of caution. Once you lose ETL you want to keep your descent rate to 2m/s or less. VRS kicks in around 4m/s, so that leaves you a small buffer for reaction time. If you do it right the transition to no-ETL flight should be pretty smooth. You just have to take your time and don't worry if the helicopter feels like it's going to shake apart. That's normal, it won't hurt anything. I'll add a second sling loading video to my list and make sure to include this info and more. Thanks for the feedback!
What would be a good example of when you should choose the longer lines? You mentioned that you'd want it for the bigger heavier loads, but why? What generally makes each line length perferable?
Most of the time if the cargo is swinging I will slow down and focus on keeping my flight steady. Use the center channel autopilot and the trim to get yourself as stable as possible. Trim for aerodynamic flight (center the ball) and adjust your course to the right to compensate (by the same number of degrees your doppler drift gauge reports you drifting to the left). You can also try gently rolling in the same direction as the cargo is swinging to take some tension out of the line and kill some of the pendular momentum. Again slowing down first will help. The general idea is when the cargo swings out to the left you go with it and try to get on top of it. In theory you'll kill the momentum it has to swing back the other way. Good luck!
Great video man! Are you aware there's an awesome controls indicator mod in the user files that makes them appear less obnoxiously and you can also hide the (i think) useless autopilot channels. I've got mine so they're white and more transparent with no background and in the lower right corner of my screen which makes everything a lot more pleasant.

Sorry, a bit late on this one. Obviously I am biased, but I think you should start with whichever one appeals to you more, and then get the other one later when you can. Both are fantastic. The Mi-8 is bigger and heavier, but also faster and more powerful with more options for weapons and cargo. It's more agile, has an autopilot, and ticks all the right boxes for me. That said, the Russian cockpit aesthetic isn't foreveryone, nor are the hundreds of switches or metric units, and it's not the iconic "thump thump thump thump thump" sound of the Huey.
@@vsTerminus thank you very much for the reply I think I'll go with the huey cause it looks simpler and less buttons so I can get the idea of heli aerodynamics then I'll go for the hip thanks for the help!

The "nav box" you're talking about is the NS-430 GPS module, which is a separate paid addon for this and a few other modules in DCS. It's a bit confusing. There are also module addons for the C-101, L-39, and soon to be the SA342 as well. As for the cargo bug, are you sling loading in multiplayer?
