- We are a DIY family trying to build a better life. We like to share projects and regular life updates. Our goals are to create a happy home, live healthy, develop our life skills, and see where our life leads us.
Love the beds. They also make a great lounging area when stopped. They’re large enough to play board games on a rainy day. Great idea!

Love the beds! My Dad used to put my brothers crib mattress in the back seat of his Buick back in 1967 and we drove to Cali one year and Florida the next. We were living in Chicago then. Worked out great for us three kids sleeping. No seatbelts needed then.

Ooo Ashley, if you slip climbing up into the top bunk, you will be impaled by that metal support strut. Yikes❗😲
It has a blue rubbery cap and should be okay, but we can always put some squishy thing over that strut or do something else if need be :)

I'm sure that you must have already thought about it,but in case you didn't, please don't forget to have a carbon monoxide alarm in your sleeping area. There have been a few times when we have used our travel trailer on cold , wet evenings with the doors and windows shut up tight. During the early morning hours the alarm went off.Once we opened the door and windows everything was fine. We just needed some fresh air.

Good point. Coincidentally, we just installed a smoke/carbon monoxide detector earlier today :) As for fresh air, we will have good ventilation that we'll be showing soon, to make sure we always have fresh air coming in for health and safety :)
Wow! What a great job utilizing all the space you have in the bus! I love the bunk beds and they look very comfortable, and safe. My only concern are those metal bars supporting the beds. As Ashley climbed up I notice that bar is exposed with the potential to injure, maybe while climbing around or when laying your head on a pillow that will be there. I'd cover them with some thick airy foam covers of some kind, similar to pool noodle but softer while still being dense.
Love the beds! I would put a cap of some kind over the metal tops so no one gets hurt on them. Bus is awesome!
I love Ashley’s smile. The beds are so slim and neat they’re great for the space. Maverick always brings a smile to my face. You two are entertaining and work great together. I always look forward to the next time.
Unless you have plans for the strut, you may want to cut them down a bit at the head of the upper bunk. Or cover them with a cushion or something. I'm sure you guys noticed it and will fix it or have plans for it, just thought I would point it out just in case it's overlooked with all the work you guys have/do.
Such a tidy , trim , welcoming little house you’ve made yourselves . So exciting , and will add such a great dimension to your lives . Imagine the stories your children will tell as the years go by , and the great memories you’ll have .

May I make a suggestion? Have the bed frame go down in the front rather than the back. That way you don't have to turn around once IN the bed, but also so you can use the underside from the back doors as a "garage"... a spare tire, hoses, a rolled up rug for out the front door for when it's muddy, transmission fluid, oil, radiator fluid, your extension cord, jumper cables, folding shovel, tool kit, fishing tackle box and poles, anything that's bulky (like thick blankets for snowy weather), raincoats, a tent, backpacks, and smaller things that you may or may not use but want "just in case" (tarps, a medicine kit, a sewing kit, tire hole plug kit, etc). It will also aid in getting OUT of the bed in the morning. Can't wait to see you on some trips! Grand Canyon maybe? Mount Rushmore?
Doug might want to look at the bar sticking up on the right if someone slammed a head or body part down and the mattress compressed on it might be an issue love your work on all your projects just trying to help u rock
Yes, I was thinking a pool noodle might help cushion that bar.

Opening emergency hatch would let out hot air but some kind of screen would be nice after opened for bugs?? Can you run air conditioner with van off? Beds look great!

Doug, you must do a lot of planning! And measuring! My husband draws picture and measures and plans and then it doesn’t come together nicely! Very frustrating! You on the other hand have a talent and it all come together so nicely! Thank you for sharing!
Okay, now I get it! I was having trouble picturing how you were going to get bunk beds back there. Very clever planning, as usual. Why should anyone doubt that you have it all figured out. Great job.
Just wanted to add an observation about the inclined bed choice. First, my apologies if someone already mentioned this as I have missed several videos, which is unusual because I watch most of them because you guys are artists and wizards with DIY! I've been a nurse many years and what comes to mind is a problem called pooling in lower extremities due to impeded blood return over the coarse of several hours. That can lead to problems over time. I have often seen doctors write orders for therapeutic inclines but the time frames often vary over shorter periods than a typical overnight of around 6-8 hours in the same position. Just a thought! Again, you folks are amazing!!
Mary, when watching Doug build their incline beds in the house, I was wondering if they would still enjoy them after some time. I think I mentioned that perhaps he could make it adjustable? Figured he could always adapt them to suit their needs later. As you expressed, they are Artists! : )
Great job Doug. I wish I were there to make curtains for your windows. I use a sewing machine. You need to put a white backing on the curtains, because if you don’t, the sun will fade them terribly.

You can weigh the van at a scrap yard or truck stop. I think you and the family are going to have many adventures ahead of you. Whats nice about the bed frame, it can be used to haul any big pieces until you buy another family SUV. Belle and Maverick look pretty excited about the whole thing. I am not worried about your pole. I know you have already thought about it and will fix it or you wanted to build the beds first to see if it will really be a problem.
Just something to think about . I know you can do it you have the skills. Maybe put some kind of latch on top bed so you can drop it down when driving and a place to set and play games when parked. Just a thought. God bless.
I love the incline sleeping idea, so smart and probably a lot better for your health! You never cease to amaze me!!
You can always put the kids out in a tent. Thats what we did with our boys. They loved it during the summer. They slept inside when there was bad weather.

Great beds !!! I wouldn’t have thought to have ventilation holes - but great idea 💡!!! ✅. How about some rubber bumpers on the top struts - to prevent getting scratched or hurt climbing in & out ??
They have blue rubbery caps on the tops which help :) Thank you!
Hey Doug I think you should add a horizontal metal bed frame (similar to the ones you used) on the top where there are two sticking out, as a support to help you climb up and as a barrier so the mattress won't fall over while driving!

I love what you guys are doing. Very nice and inspiring. I’m buying a van and going to us it to visit grandchild in TX . Not going to live in it. I just wanna pull over and sleep if I get tired.
That seemed to be a fast, easy build! The hardest part looked like it was cutting all the metal to size! Looks like plenty of room for everyone to be comfortable and the hatch that opens will help with air circulation if you want or need it, too. Was concerned there were so many holes it would weaken the wood but it looks great and obviously is strong enough. Looks like Ashley is ready for that first trip!!! Happy for you. Technically, you could not see Maverick. You could see his finger. lol.
Doug and Ashley, I'm getting more and more excited for you, every vid you post on your Oasis. I like what you mentioned about things being easy to change if you decide to. That is a big plus about your videos. You build and demo things that may work for us too. For those of us that have to pay someone to build things for us, it is wonderful to have your vids to show the builder, to give them a basic idea of what we are thinking we want and if it would work for us. Saves us time and money. I am very Grateful that you are both detail oriented thinkers. I have to mention how fortunate you are for having a young Artist and even younger Supervisor, lending fresh perspectives every day. Bus Loads of Love!

Buy some swimming noodles to slide over the top of the braces so you won't scrape your leg on it. Great job.

Thanks! Not really, but if they turn out to be a problem we'll do something about it :)
Looks great. I would suggest some sort of padding on that post that is off-set-- I would end up hurting myself

Our bed has an adjustable base so we sleep with it in an inclined position too. We love it! It's great for my heart, blood pressure, my husband's sleep apnea. We will never go back to flat sleeping again. Great job as always!
Looks like you have some good storage space under the bottom bunks, too. Maybe even room for one of those portable folding camping table/chair combos that you can slide in and out from the back door.

As an emergency physician i feel free standing ends of the. Bed posts are risk for straddle injuries whole getting on and off the top bunk. Have seen too many of those.

I agree on the inclined beds. I have slept on one for several years. Now a flat bed seems like my head is too low and it is a weird feeling. Bus looks great like all of your projects. You do things differently and I like to see what you come up with next.

I really like it! There’s nothing like making a space work better for your needs. We bought a new travel trailer. It fit our needs space wise, but there were a few things we changed because it made sense to us. I completely understand doing things that make sense individually or as a family😊
Might wanna do something with those 2 poles sticking up on the top bunk...could be a bad accident waiting to happen...
I have them there for a reason, but if they become an issue we can cut them lower.
Considering how much weight you took out of the bus that metal for the beds are nothing. Looking great!
Super cool! It's almost at the point where Belle can use the bus as a camper for her own backyard camping adventure!
Looks good, but I think I'd have inclined it the other way so the head is at the back of the bus, seems like that would make it easier to crawl in and out of bed. Also I'd either cut down those front supports or figure a way to thoroughly pad them. I can imagine knee, or other, damage as someone is climbing in/out of the top bunks... I'm sure you had something in mind for that.
You removed that HEAVY lift, and other stuff, my bet is the things you've added are still quite a bit lighter. It would have been interesting to have weighed the van as you bought it then again once your changes are done.
That was my thought. The chair ramp was a pretty heavy piece. Probably didn’t change the weight much with the beds, etc. very nice.
We originally wanted our heads at the other end, but that would put our faces too close to the AC unit, so we just had to do it this way, plus with the the wheel-well it would make that end even higher and closer to the AC unit. Yea, that would have been cool to weigh it initially and then weigh it again at the end :)
@@diyfferent Check the registration - it usually shows the vehicle weight. You'd have to figure out where the nearest weigh station is for the modified weight. Would be interesting to see the 'DIYfference' though!
Using the metal was proably very smart, with the price of wood. We priced tounge & groove plywood flooring the other day & it looks like the flooring is going to have to wait until it comes back down. 60 something way out of our price range. We got 8 2×4's & that put a ghost white look on hubbies face at 100$ Its just kinda sicking for low income ppl. trying to make something outta nothing. Are old mobile home is way worse than what you started with & we aren't even close to being as skilled at building as you guys are & old doesn't help either.
You always come up with way beyond thinking outside the box. We woulda never even thought about ventilation holes.. Such a great idea. Amazing as always, with the metal & ventilation idea!

Frankly I can’t imagine that anything you’ve added comes even close to the weight of that lift that you removed....am I right? I love how this project is coming along....absolutely love both of your creativity!

And then with this project when you talked of making a bunk bed for the bus I thought that you would talk about the inclination of the mattress. I think I would put rubber boots on the upper legs of the frame at the end of the mattresses they could cause injury when climbing onto the bed. Great looking beds well done. 👍
So cool, I think I may adjust my bed for inclined sleeping, I have asthma and sometimes laying down it takes my breath away for whatever reason, maybe this will help!!
Did you consider having the seats face each other and a table in the middle?
Yea, but for a couple reasons it can't be done. One reason is the side support rails that the chairs bolt to don't extend far enough.

Awesome job! I recently had to cut a bunch those struts and some other metal. Used a Diablo Demon blade on my circular saw. Amazed it cut clean and as easy as cutting wood.

You should put the higher end of the bed by the back door it would be easier to climb into bed that way. The bus is really coming along it looks very nice.
It's something we considered and wanted to do, but the AC unit would be too close to our faces, so we figured it's better to have our feet down at that end. Thanks!

You planned out and followed the plan to the letter. A thought out plan, and carefully following your requirements, made the production much more straightforward. Drilling the stacked boards went excellently. Yes, weight can be a problem, but you removed the hoist, which was no lightweight and with fewer seats and passengers, weight was recovered, you are using the recovered weight more productively. You planned to succeed, are doing so.
Wow that looks amazing. I only have one concern and that is the tall metal pieces that stick up on the top bunks I noticed when Ashley got up the mattress sinks down and she could get accidentally hurt or you could with that metal piece it probably needs some type of padding over it or maybe you’ve already taken that into consideration.

I love it a great getaway bus I think the only thing I would of done is put one set of the chairs and turn them around and put a table in the middle for eating and playing games on ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Really great you guys! 💖 The holes are a great idea for the bed boards. Please mention again what oil you use. Do you thin it? I think Bel should paint the toilet seat with palm trees and birds to go with the oasis theme.
For this we just used shellac which doesn't get thinned. Thanks!

Looks like she's just about ready for a vacation! Looking great! I doubt you are overweight because the lift and all the extra seats being gone, I'd figure its about even since that lift was so heavy.
