One of the best MTV performances. She had announced she would be lip syncing and it was intentional as the performance was a homage/ recreation of a drag ball. The costumes, the voguing, the lip syncing, the opulence, the Marie Antoinette - realness. Truly iconic and honours the origins of Voguing.
According Billboard this is the Best Performance at the VMAs of all Time. She's lipsyncing because we are at the ball!! House of Madonna rules the world!
Fun fact. Madonnna is wearing one of the dresses that Glen Close wore in the movie Dangerous Liaisons. At the time she got flak for lip syncing this iconic performance. The general public didn't understand drag ball cuture so she made sure they got an education.
Madonna made and dominated MTV from its debut broadcast in 1984 with her groundbreaking performance of LAV all through the 1990s that included the Vogue music video and this performance. She opened the doors for bolder, more sexually liberated artistry for female pop music artists, and more importantly for the emergence and appreciation of LGBTQ artistry in mainstream pop culture ahead of its time. Many in the gay vogueing ballroom scene considered this performance by the “House Of Madonna” a masterpiece. ❤luv your reaction.
I call this Live Video Art Performance. “In a 2015 interview former Madonna dancers Luis Camacho and Jose Gutierez explained that the inspiration for theme in fact came from the 1988 film Dangerous Liaisons. Prior to the VMA performance, Madonna was uncertain whether she should perform "Vogue" or "Keep It Together", but just before the end of the concert tour, during a game of charades with her troupe, Madonna realized the connection between the "arrogant and aristocratic" attitudes and mannerisms of vogueing, and those of the characters in Dangerous Liaisons, so she arranged for the troupe to be dressed in appropriate 18th-century-styled costumes, and Madonna herself performed in one of the lavish gowns that Glenn Close had worn in the film.”
Madonna played up that “arrogant and aristocratic” attitude in this number until the end when she help up a fancy lorgnette (hand held opera spectacles) to look down on the cheering audience as she was carried away reclining in the sofa. In pre-French Revolution, the aristocracy occupy the private balcony seats in opera theaters and their women used these jewelry-like spectacles to look closer at anything that fancy their interest in the theater. Madonna was likely parodying the condescending attitude of the 18th century French aristocracy towards the bourgeoisie and peasant class. Of course the masses got their revenge on the aristocracy and upper classes during the French Revolution and the ensuing Reign of Terror where thousands were executed via guillotine.
Choreographer Vincent Paterson was the one who came up with the concept for this performance. He has videos here on UA-cam explaining how it happened. The 3 white fans used in the performance belonged to him and he sold them at auction a few years ago for $75,000.00 for the set.
YES that guy was in the video. These boys (all but one are gay), and the two female backup singers, are her official tour entourage for the BLOND AMBITION TOUR. She includes them in the vogue music video, this performance, and on the tour! Donna & Niki (who of course are here and in the music video) are a big part of her blond ambition tour, and they worked with her on the Who’s That Girl? tour (with a third singer Debra). Donna & Niki continue to perform with Madonna on her tours and in the studio for many years to come 😊. The three had such amazing on stage chemistry and would do so for multiple eras :)
One of her Background Singers/Dancers Niki Haris had a short-lived music career herself. Snaps "Exterminate" and one lesser known followup song made the charts in the early 90s.
I can say, I never get tired of seeing this amazing performance. I will suggest the Live Performance of this song on the MDNA, tour as it is just stunning. You were quite correct, in that there is not one period in history Madonna can not authentically embody and make her own.
Madonna, the biggest star on the planet, opening her VMA performance of her #1 single by giving queer dancers of color nearly a whole minute by themselves was a big deal back in the day. Diversity was not was it is today. And yeah the lipnycing goes with the Ballroom culture. She sang live all her other VMAS performances, just 1989 with Express Yourself. Hard to believe, they put all this effort into just one VMAS performance because she never performed it quite this way and in these costumes again so this was a must see.
When you go and see her celebration tour, you will recognize this look immediately. There are many more to discover before going to see her live. All iconic looks are represented in one way or another. And yes, Vogue at the Celebration tour is a ball, literally!
Now serving: Marie Antoinette realness!!! 💕 One of my favourite performances by Madonna. You can forgive her lip-synching immediately when you see the dress she is wearing. 😆 Too bad the version you have skips a few times. I think it did that four times. I think she performs vogue at every tour. I think. Each time is extremely different. All of it avant-garde performance art. Great review ladies, glad you picked this performance. Have a lovely day. ♥️ Also: I do hope you’re going to do a review of Sooner or Later. Her performance of this at the Oscars literally brought the house down.
Thank you! ❤️ Unfortunately, we had to make some cuts in the video to get past the copyright block (Not sure why the MTV videos are such a problem lately...). Hope you have a great day/evening too! ❤️❤️
She has been a protector of the GLBT community for so long, been there for us waaay before it was fashionable or accepted, there is NO one like Madonna….and her creativity is off the charts, another great reaction! Thank you both 🥰
You have to see ❤sooner or later❤from the Oscar performance!!!!! It’s insane!!! It’s her best live performance of all time … she went there with MJ he was her date!!! You will blown away 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
All the dancers are in the video and Blond Ambition Tour. Nikki and Donna carry over in to this and the video from the last tour on to many future tours (they become huge faves of Madonna fans).
It’s a lip-syncing performance cuz she’s honoring the ballroom scene. This is the first “ lipsync for your life” moment on tv (Rupau’s drag race). It’s 1990 and Madonna is bringing and putting upfront black and brown gay men on national TV, no artist of her status wanted to be associated to gay men specifically when the aids epidemic was still seen as a punishment from God for being gay. It wasn’t “cool” to be a lgbtq+ ally at that time. Madonna was risking all, she could have played it safe but she decided to “disturb the peace”, since day one. Today the new pop girls have it easy and they can call themselves lgbtq+ allies cuz it’s “cool” now. Madonna is a true ally something that some gays and specially new generations of gays are ignorant about. Madonna doesn’t only give a good performance but she also brings something to the table, provoque conversation about subjects that matter. Art needs to reflect society and that’s what Madonna is all about. She will be always on the right side of history!
OH, one last question, are you going to react to her album I’m Breathless? While “Vogue” is the only song on the album to get an official video, I guarantee you have to react to her live Oscars performance of “Sooner or Later”, from the movie Dick Tracy. It is, to this day one of her very best Live vocal performances. And her date that night was Michael Jackson.
Madonna and her crew actually performed this amazing routine 2 times. They did it the night of the MTV Awards and they performed it again the next night at an AIDS Benefit Fundraiser. No one at the AIDS Benefit knew that it was going to be performed. The music started and they came on stage and the crowd went WILD. Most everyone had seen the performance on tv the night before and they couldn't believe they were going to get to see it live. It was a truly amazing performance.
An iconic performance, very funny and spicy, but above all very funny. The choreography and staging is magnificent. As always, it is a pleasure to see your reactions and see how well you know how to interpret each performance. Kisses 😍😍😍
Wonderful reaction! If you have time, I think you should consider reacting to the “Vogue” performance from the 2004 Re-Invention Tour as a bonus. It’s available on her channel. After all, there’s no official concert video for this tour (we only got the “I’m going to tell you a secret” documentary”). And again, don’t move on from this era without watching the “Sooner of Later” performance at the Oscars. :)
Please check the MTV awards express yourself her dancing, Energy n singing live Is amazing!! One in the best live performances from her!! Her músic, videos n messages still to this day amazes so mny new younger generation n Also those who followed her since the beginning!! Cheers
She was Queen Marie Antionette in this performance art. It was genius how she incorporated French royal court dance of the 18th century for her 1990 MTV Vogue performance.
Regal performance from the Queen! Thank You for your beautiful reactions, like and subscribe for your channel☺ Please do more reactions on a Confessions tour, this whole concert is a work of art! At least I highly recommend You to watch the opening of the Confessions tour - "Future lovers\I feel love", one of the best opening performances of all time
Thank you so much - We're so grateful that you've joined us on our journey! ❤️ We're going to react to a concert from each of Madonna's tours, so we will definitely do the Confessions tour. Can't wait! ❤️
Thank you for mentioning the ballroom community, where Vogue originated from. This was groundbreaking for our community to be seen in the main stream, with such a icon of an artist, known as Madonna. Jose and Luis Xtravaganza Who are the two front Vogue dancers actually were the ones who inspired Madonna to write the song Vogue. I belong to the house of Xtravaganza .., I am Octavio Xtravaganza…. Jose is my father of the house, and Luis would be considered my brother in the house which you know represents a family. Just a fun fact, for you how Madonna came upon the vogue culture. My friend Robert is best friends with Debra Mizer, who is Madonna‘s best friend. All three were friends, but it was Robert who knew Jose & Luis from the club scene and told Debra about him and his style of dance called Vogue in which Deborah mentioned it to Madonna.. Madonna being intrigued she went to the club with Robert and saw Jose and Luis Voguing on the club dance floor… the rest is history… imagine being a young man at the time, not even in their 20s inspiring, what is the biggest artist in the world to write a song that would change the world of dance and culture… A few days ago, Jose reunited with Madonna on the celebration tour in New York for the performance of Vogue.. what an iconic moment…. The House Of Xtravaganza taught the world to Vogue
Wow!!! Thank you so much for sharing this incredible history with us! ❤️❤️ We're very grateful that you've taken the time to explain this fascinating backstory and provide additional context for Madonna's introduction to vogue culture. Cheers for the House of Xtravaganza!!! 🎉
Yes, choreographer Vincent Paterson, who worked with Madonna and came up with the concept for this performance, said that the girls were all worried about the fan flip. He said that at the end of each rehearsal the 3 ladies had to flip and catch the fan 30 times in a row before they could leave. The 3 white fans belonged to him, and he sold them at auction a few years ago for $75,000.00 for the set of 3.
There are just a few seconds skipped during the song in this video, for example when they throw the fan up and catch it. Try to watch the full performance!
Unfortunately, our reactions to MTV performances have been getting blocked lately, so we had to do a few cuts in the video to get it through... We did see the full performance though. ❤️
One word to describe this performance: Perfection! Such an icon in the 80s, 90s and even in the naughties. Shame that almost all icons either die at young age or become complete and utter looney wackos.

I Saw the Celebration tour in Barcelona, and was Increíble you Will love It!!
So happy for you!! ❤️❤️
One of her best performances! Ranked as the best VMA performance of all time. Like only the Queen can!

Such an iconic performance. Her costume is the same costume Glenn Close wore on Dangerous Liaisons
Very cool! ❤️
It's literally incredible what Madonna has done during the first 10 years of her career, she's still amazing since the beginning 😻😇

And this Dangerous Liaisons inspired performance was such a great way to showcase Vogue. ❤️

Queen Of Pop 👑
Madonna took the underground gay ballroom scene of NYC and transported it to an 18th century ballroom in Paris
She was indeed a staggering beauty!

Madonna never failed to entertain and surprise - always something new and unexpected. A master entertainer.
Everytime you see vogue she does something completely different. She manages to make this song stay so fresh and relevant with every performance.
