01:15 The vertical zooming away from the Diana's coffin as 'I Vow to Thee My Country' is played, is one of the most intense and emotional images of the 20th century.
I was just 15 first singing this at Remembrance Sunday and that was the first time my dad has seen me pretty distressed but I went for my great grandfather who survived the war and I wished he was still alive because he would have attended with me and dad
I fell in love with this song hearing it sung at Princess Diana's funeral. It always brings back memories of Diana and her attempt to keep the media from her family and hearing something about the Royals almost daily in the Sports Card Shop I owned at the time on my TV, which was always on in my shop. It makes me swallow as I hear it sung with that beautiful music. My brother said the Royals and British really know how to put on a paramount event. The song will also be sung at my funeral. Princess Diana was a Princess for ALL THE PEOPLE.
Marietta Alexander Me too! My father in law died the day of Diana's funeral and this brings back all those emotions all over again. He was blessed with 94 years on this earth but it was still sad.
I fell in love with this song when it was sung at Princesss Diana's Service. Got choked up too as it was so beautiful and fitting. A GREAT servent to mankind and England, we are all in debt for the great things she did. If it weren't for these ambitious photographers out for money, she would be alive today. Her husband is a sorry person for marrying her just so he could have good looking sons. Lord only knows what his current wife's kids would have looked like if she had them with him. Her loss will carry forward for years to come. She only wanted to be left alone. Such a tragedy for us all.
Yeah same, like no matter how times I hear it and watch this video it makes me sad cos I just wonder what Diana would be like today, I was only just turned 1 the day she died but I have enjoyed reading about her and I deffo think she would be proud of William and Harry and those little kids would be adored by her
This song has nothing to do with religion though. It’s a song about patriotism and the patriotic duty that a group of people have to their country that they love. That’s why this is a more fitting song for the national anthem than the current one
I was 15 years old when this happened. My mom and I woke up at 4 am (in NYC) to record all of it on VHS. This hymn touched me so much that I even recorded it onto a cassette so I could play it on my Walkman. Hearing it now makes me feel like I did then-sad, longing for "another country" where everything will be made right, where untimely deaths don't have to happen, and young boys don't have to lose a loving mother.
I first attended the Remembrance Sunday service 4 years ago at 15 years old and my dad knew I was so traumatised but now at almost 21 years old I’m perfectly fine
I first heard this glorious hymn watching the telecast of Princess Diana's funeral in 1997. I have loved the hymn ever since. The choir, the pipe organ....truly inspiring and awesome!
When the second verse starts and the camera pans away from the casket to the ceiling of the Abbey, it is almost as if her soul was, at that exact moment, making its' ascension to the Almighty in Heaven. It makes me cry.
I always request this for my yearly Remembrance Sunday service and it even brought Woody.EXE to tears last year when he first attended as Wales’s monarch. He told me that he’s attending again because of how respectful and great my crowd were. I love remembrance so much
Even though thoroughly American.. my roots are English Scottish. ..I am moved by the true heart of a soldier to save his country... and to know there is another land..Heaven ... where there is peace...NO MORE WAR!
Stopped by to enjoy this beautiful song and acknowledge The People's Princess -Princess Diana laid to rest on this date in 1997 - the best rembrance would be to do something extra special for somebody today
I do not care what any others think. I think it is a fitting tribute to a great lady who, for all the world only wished for good, yet was treated with an indignant harshness by the paparazzi. Gold bless you Diana.
I am not a Christian, but the first time I saw this video, it brang me to tears, you can feel the energy and emotion from those who are singing! GOD save the gracious KING AND QUEEN! and GOD SAVE PRINCESS DIANA!!!!! May her legacy never be for forgot!!!!
Now i can carry Diana’s legacy on 20 years later at 15. That made me become Wales’s Queen 6 years later at 21. I hate how Woody.EXE is trying to make me just as good as her but I’ll never take Diana’s place
When they start singing it is such a powerful moment, a third of the whole world watched and grieved for this poor woman. I was one of them at 10 years old. She will love forever as an example of what royalty truly is. A true Queen
Theres a wonderful part of the interview she gave the night before the wedding, where she mentions it was a favourite of hers since school days, and back then it was a happier song for knowing that, now it just brings floods of tears knowing why it was played a second time for her.
Actually "I Vow to Thee" is an unusual choice for a wedding because the hymn is a traditional funeral hymn in the Church of England. It was Diana's choice of it for her wedding that did a lot for increasing its popularity more generally.

I was five. In Australia it was late at night when the funeral was on. My British mother let me stay up to watch it. I didn't understand what was going on, I didn't even know who she was, but I understood that it was important. I understood the grief. I'm almost 30 now and even today, hearing any variation of this song rips my heart out of my chest and makes me want to burst into tears. Funny how these things stay with you.
I am from Malaysia and I have the same experience with you as a young boy back in 1997. This hymn touched my heart and to me it has been associated with the Princess Diana since then.
Attending Remembrance Sunday at only 15 years old for the first time 4 years ago now earned me the affection of the Wales nation. This was very traumatising for 15 year old me but now at 20, I’m not traumatised
The tune to 'I Vow To Thee My Country' is named 'Thaxted'. It's named after the beautiful town in Essex, U.K., where Gustav Holst lived. The melody is drawn from 'Jupiter' in The Planets. It's my favourite hymn and this is the finest rendition I've heard; very moving. Many thanks for posting it.
It's like that dreadful tragedy only happened yesterday, for me who had barely turned 20 at the time, and honestly it still hurts as much 😥 May the Almighty bless and keep you, Lady Diana, Princess of Wales 💐😥😘❤️😘😥💐
Only the British could put on a spectacle with such understated magnificence as this and be, at the same time, so moving. It may have lost its empire but this is why Britain will always be the greatest country in the world.
I used to sing this song in school as a little girl....that was long b4 our country became Independent fr Eng..in 1966....now im an old lady n yet...im still moved to tears just hearing it....a fitting tribute to our Sweet Princess Di whom i still love...tho im thousands of mls away fr hr country....
I don't really see this as an Anthem for some reason, but this really is one of the three best hymns I can think of for a funeral. It is so dignified and the huge pipe organ and the Abbey do it great justice
I was born in Edinburgh, but raised a Yank. in the British tradition and consider myself a serious student of the British ways. Now, being a professional church musician I try to uphold the British tradition in my little Anglican church here in the middle of Oklahoma, USA. The British do choral music and hymns right! May Princess Diana rest in peace. She was a breath of fresh air. This hymn was sung at Prince Charles' and Diana's wedding too, I believe. I love it.
Diana--Princess of the World! This hymn shall forever remain in our hearts and always in honor of your life...I cry now when I hear it all these years later.
What kind of person feels the need to: 1. Find a video like this 2. Comment on how "patriotic it is" 3. Assume that it is therefore negative Just enjoy it!!!
After the royal wedding yesterday, a bunch of shows about Prince William and Kate and his parents...I heard this hymn being sung and said "hey! that from jupiter by holsts!!!" then thought who did it first...turns out he used it in his song...it's still beautiful no matter who did it first!
This is one of the most moving, inspiring and beautiful hymns ever written, a tribute to the sacrifices for freedom borne by the British people over the centuries and particularly in the world wars of the Twentieth Century. Absolutely magnificent. I am an American, albeit of English descent, and every time I hear this I am moved to tears.
One of the pivotal events of my life time. And this song has stayed with me forever, just makes me weep whenever I hear it... so haunting and powerful. Definitely being played at my funeral.
I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR THIS SINCE PRINCESS DIANA'S FUNERAL!!!! I heard this on "The Young & The Restless" during a Memorial Day episode when one of the characters returned to Iraq. I LOVE this hymn...Very moving. I'm a Black man, Baptist turned Apostolic, I may like my hip hop, and R & B, but this hymn does it for me though. It's a beautiful tune and takes me back to when I saw the funeral on tv. Thanks for posting.
I'm glad there are still people out there like you ! I agree with everything you say, you may only be 17 but that doesn't matter. We have the greatest country in the world and I am glad to serve her and will do forever !

May she be at Peace, and may those whose lives she graciously touched forever be thankful. Yes, she was complex and troubled, but as Lady Colin Campbell who knew her well said, she had redeeming virtues. I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above, Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love: The love that asks the reason, the love that stands the test, That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best; The love that never falters, the love that pays the price, The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice. And there’s another country, I’ve heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; We may not count her armies, we may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; And one by one and fervently we pray for her increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.
Beautiful, beautiful hymn. The Westminster Abbey Harrison and Harrison organ is well suited for this grand cathedral, the different sounds always fill the church and complements the congregation's singing.
I remember every moment of this. from the announcement of the car crash, her death, and through out her funeral. i was 5 yrs old. I also remember my grandparents crying too. R.I.P Princess Diana.
When the camera pans upwards and away from the coffin during this hymn, it is as though Diana's soul is making the ascension to Heaven, at that very moment in time.
Gustav Holst composed 'The Planets' suite, written between 1914-1916, with the first performance (with a mixed reception) in 1918. The tune 'Thaxted' referred to the place of a cottage the Holsts had moved to circa 1918. This tune was taken from a section of the suite called 'Jupiter, the bringer of Jollity', which has a very patriotic feel. It is he to whom we owe most credit for the music of this hymn..
My family is from the Bahamas..my mom in particular feels similar to you. In fact, I think she taught me alot about the spiritual dignity that Queen Elizabeth II has throughout her service has maintained, of late, often under political fire...she's no doubt an admiration of a sacrifice gone by!
Prince William knew this was a favorite of his mom's so he wanted it at her funeral...I had a comparable feeling towards the hymns I requested for my grandmother's funeral
Another really great hymn of this and many centuries to come. What great words they sing. This Westminster Abbey choir is a fabulous group of great singers
I'm in love. I will never get over this beautiful, nationalistic piece, led by appropriate instrument, voices, and architectural space. It is beyond this earth and a high testament to love of country.

Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
And one by one and fervently we pray for her increase,
And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.
So lovely to hear this hymn after watching Kate and William’s wedding.
This hymn brought me to tears during her funeral.
World Class Performance.
Princess of the World
I remember this LIVE: Our entire family was weeping weeping 😪!!
When the camera pans upwards and away from the coffin during this hymn, it is as though Diana's soul is making the ascension to Heaven, at that very moment in time.
Still can't believe the beautiful Princess Diana is gone .. a light went out in the world when she died xx
Some moments are beyond
beautiful song. I loved Diana and I understand why she loved this song so much. I want it played at my own funeral
That hymm is enough to make the coldest heart, weep.
This was the most viewed event in world television history! More than 3 billion watched it around the world.
I cry when i hear this, This was her favorite hymn and Willam chose it. I have her funeral on CD. It was heartbreaking......
it was one of the most touching moments in this funeral, i've heard, that was one of the favorite songs of diana.
From across the pond, we salute you!
The first time I heard this was at Princess Diana's funeral. Loved it ever since...
