It may sound crazy but this hymn followed me around and I later realised have been called and so now I am a vicar. beautifully played Richard. Thank you.
Calling really happens. I went on a visit to Holy Island, and while waiting for the tide to turn to let us over the causeway I had a literal vision of a muslin curtain being drawn aside and the words 'It is not a choice it is a calling' entered my head. In my case I was called to take up a new job in Cornwall, where I met my now husband. So from being alone and insecure I found my true home and the two of us are a family.
Watching an organist pulling stops throughout a piece and feeling the music grow is like watching a master chef cook from scratch. Truly amazing. Bravo 👏🏻👏🏻
It reminds us there is a God of beauty and Grace who gave us ears to hear and hearts to give thanks! You are awesome with youre gift to share.God Bless ---Vic--Prineville Oregon.
Your rendition of this lovely hymn is indeed my favorite on ALL of UA-cam. I absolutely love how you start off so softly and gently, and build up to this thunderous, seismic crescendo in what sounds like full organ, and then topping it off at the end with the zimbelstern (sp?) stop. Awesomely done with evident feeling and devotion! Thank you for sharing!
Wonderful! This just came up on my feed again. I guess it's getting to be that time of year again. I love this tune so much, but in my Anglican church, we sing it to I Vow to Thee, My Saviour.
While I am a US citizen and not happy with how things are here right now our anthem on this stunning organ played by an amazing organist brought tears to my eyes!
Amazing how things composed work out to be, "The chicken before the egg or the other way around". Sometimes the backstory adds so much more. This tune is not the only one. Because I reach 60+yrs & find out makes it worth the wait. Saw in recent few years the Winston Churchill funeral with this song. Didn't have a clue about the tunes history. Recent year viewing on UA-cam shows a university orchestra flash mob performed at a shopping mall was quite brilliant. No voices needed. Last year (2024) was the 80th anniversary of D-Day ?
In my church and in the United States, the tune "Thaxted" by Holst known as the hymn "O God Beyond All Praising" by Michael Perry, arranged by Richard Proulx back in 1982.
Lovely to hear the cymbelstern at the end. Gustav Holst was a great man and an equally great composer. Egdon Heath is wonderful, as is his short chamber opera, Savitri. I love the Planets Suite but there is far more. Look out for E. J. Moeran too.
WOW! So Richard McVeigh favors the Blackburn organ. I always thought that Richard is a Salisbury organ type of guy. Don't get me wrong - The instruments in Blackburn and Salisbury are both great, but, hmmm........So Richard, whats it gonna be, Pilgrim?
One of my favourite hymns. I enjoyed the first verse. But when you started adding the mixtures and reeds in the second verse, the solemnity and reverence of it rapidly declined. Last time I was in the congregation, whoever was playing the organ drowned out every hymn and I couldn’t even hear the choir or my own voice!! That organ in my opinion is too loud for the building. The mixtures screech and the Great reeds are harsh and shout instead of sing. Not my favourite Cathedral organ. The open plan visible design of it looks hideous to say the least. You could never compare it to such as York Minster.
I mean exactly what I said. It is not my favourite Cathedral organ due to the harsh tone. It is meant to accompany singing not compete with it. My opinion which I have a right to, with all due respects. My experience at the service I attended was ruined by the organ / organist. I walked out after the first couple of bars of the Postlude.
Of course. I was trained that when when you are accompanying the worship of Almighty God or his blessed Mother, you are NOT giving a Recital or demonstrating the tonal resources of the organ , Glory be to God not the Organ or headstrong organist. The congregation are there to worship God not hear how loud the organ can sound. I have had the misfortune to know of Cathedral organists and scholars, not to mention Parish Church Organists and choir masters who are proud to declare that they are confirmed Atheists!!! and only interested in exercising their talent rather than as a Christian vocation. I am proud to be a confirmed Christian who offers their God Given talent to the Glory of God and this makes me all the better as an organist and a person. I thank my late organ teacher for his no nonsense inspiration to myself.

People call me a lot, most of the time it’s something like cumdump 🤷♂️

Nothing resonates more with me than a traditional hymn well played on a pipe organ, the king of instruments. 😀👍
Simonline 🏴🤔😀👍🇮🇱
I am not British.
I have no idea what the lyrics are.
I had to ask a British friend about this song.
The tune is fabulous.
The lyrics do not mention Britain...

Absolutely glorious, and the cymbalstern at the end is indeed, lovely! Thank you for this video!
The original wall of sound desired by rock stars.
It's enough to bring a tear to a glass eye!

Hearing this takes me back to Winston Churchill's funeral 60 years ago.

I vow needs to be the UK national anthem

@@davidcraggs3770 excellent. Glad you left and made room for somebody who probably appreciates it.
