Bonus points for their replacement having an amazing track record with Sonic characterization (except Shadow, but that's more the fault of Izuka's mandates). Seriously Iann Flynn has made some people LIKE the Zeti! They're undeniably still one note, but that one note is played *much* better imo, especially Zavok.
I think the reason they keep bringing back the Zeti is because they want to make them like the Koopalings in Mario. Simple bosses, easily recognizable, easy to shove into any game.

Storywise it was just *weird.* It felt like it was going weirdly dark for some reason, like with Eggman's faked death, Tails being fake roboted, and Sonic's friends dying while he considers giving up. It's like the second darkest game to Shadow the Hedgehog and that shit had Shadow murdering Eggman.

Thinking about it, this game really is the absolute darkest in the franchise; we have Zeti being tortured by Eggman and then psychologically manipulated by Zavok, then Sonic, rather than bringing hope, bullies them further and destroys them.

The one thing I did like about this game where the crossover stages, the Zelda one had this really cool open field that you could explore. With you being able to open up paths that you could go through. If lost world was more like that, I think people would like it more. Anyway, good video Cybershell's child.
It is still my personal belief that Sonic Lost World was supposed to be a Colours sequel, and the Lost World or Lost Hex the game takes place in was one of the planets from Eggman's amusing park in space. But for some strange reason they decided to just forget Colours despite the game obviously taking heavy inspiration from it. The Zeti could have been wisps gone bad or corrupted by Eggman's exploitation of them, and thus making a direct consequence of his actions that he now has to deal with.

Yea, this is where Pontac & Graff's shtick started to get really old. If they were just writing for spin-offs, it be less of an issue but sadly it's not a case here. Probably the weirdest part of this game character-wise is the fact that Amy wasn't acting constantly clingy over Sonic and her genuine kindness for animals like the bird from Sonic Adventure had returned yet was still reduced to the sidelines with Knuckles of all people.

It isn't weird at all... considering that the current writers don't know or care about how the Sonic cast was like in past games, or in general. At this point every character in the franchise has been turned into an almost complete blankslate of a character, or flanderized beyond recognition. And don't even expect anything meaningful from the Adventure games to come back in the current games like character traits; Tails's portrayal in Forces showed me that nobody at Sega knows anymore who these characters really are.

The Deadly Six are just the Koopalings and Bowser. They’re supposed to be based from oni which are Japanese ogres or demons, but no fans ever would have known about that because Japanese Yōkai is SO goddamn obscure in the west.
Yokai watch was created before Sonic Lost world, so i Guess that could have helped? Deadly SIX are still shit tho, and why the hell they rappresent the Seven deadly Sins if they are Ogre
I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking that. The level design is so much better than the Wii U version, more traditional and fast paced. Even the parkour is better. Some people thought the levels were too long but I never personally had an issue with length.
look guys, i agree with both of you, but it only applies to like 5 levels, and the rest are either plagued by overuse of a gimmick (like the snowman level) or a wisp (like the casino level with asteroid) that being said the sky road act where you ride on rockets, run while avoiding the dragons fire and in some cases can only access certain shortcuts and powerups by outrunning him is genuinely generations levels of extremely good level design
Nice to see another fan of the 3DS version :) On top of everything else, I really liked the special stages in the game although I can't deny that they probably would've been better if they had traditional controls since I don't know how I would've played them without a swivel chair.
I mostly agree. Level design on the 3DS gets really atrocious. On Wii U it's still bad time to time but you have a Yoshi and Zelda stage at least. There's literally one level on 3DS where you have to slowly move as an asteroid for several minutes. But the 3DS version has proper special stages. Some bosses are better on 3DS. Although forgettable, I'd say the soundtrack on 3DS is actually better.

This was the first modern 3D Sonic game where I felt like the gameplay was able to spiritually match the momentum based feel from the Mega Drive games. Like, I don't mean that it plays like the mega drive games, but I mean it actually gave Sonic a sense of momentum and control not really seen in any of the other 3D games that just had you shifting lanes or boosting through obstacles. The run button was actually pretty smart since it allowed you to precisely control Sonic's movements. And the spindash is pretty powerful in general in this game. I remember around release the reviews for the game were pretty interesting. It got shit on by critics in the USA, but international reviews favored it pretty well. I recall there being a small meme where IGN America gave it a really low score while all the international divisions of IGN across the world gave it much higher scores. I would have loved to see a sequel or successor released that improves this gameplay style. If you took this same exact gameplay style and put it in an open world setting where you can traverse nearly anything as Sonic, I think it would do pretty well.
Lost World’s story was the only one actually written by Pontac and Graff themselves. For Colors, Generations, and Forces, the stories were written by the team in Japan, and Pontac and Graff were brought in for the jokes, but for this one, they were given free rein. That’s why I find it weird that this is the only game they’ve had a hand in that actually attempts character drama, even if it didn’t work.
If I had a dollar for every time Sega hired a bad writer who openly doesn't play Sonic named 'Ken' to write for Sonic, I'd have two dollars. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird such a specific scenario happened twice.
I think this game is good like 7/10 good, but it’s a step in the wrong direction At least I can actually play LostWorld unlike the automation that is Forces But the story and artstyle is still garbage

I'm a broken record with this, but seriously Add momentum/physics, remove the run button, make the levels _actual_ Sonic levels instead of this Mario Galaxy bullshit And you seriously have a good engine that might potentially be on par with the Adventure engine
Honestly, i think the 3ds version captures the same feeling as the adventure engine in some levels, shame that because those levels are pretty short and also one of them has you pushing fruit

This game didn't even bite Nintendo like that, they did their own thing and just because it took some inspiration from "good" mario games and made it their own doesn't make lost world bad, the only nitpick I have is the weak bosses everything else is fine with lost world, another game hated so much for no reason. Agree, like heroes is flawed from the start bc of the fact well, you have to play the exact same game like 4 times ans some levels drag on too much, and SA2 the only good parts of gameplay are the speed stages while the rest are either mediocre or tedious

Sonic Adventure 2 is truly not a bad game. In fact it's one of best Sonic Games of all time! Someone saying that SA2 is a bad game is messed up. Unless of course, they've only played it once and didn't go back to play more in order to practice. Now yes it has certain flaws but doesn't make it entirely a bad game
To be fair, the Deadly Six in IDW Sonic is basically the most interesting they've ever gotten. Ian definitely does what he can with the terrible ideas given to him.
I personally felt the way most of the Deadly Six were dealt with came out a anti-climacticly. Still, at least they fared better there than whatever their debut game provided them with.

So about the Wisps being in EVERY Modern Sonic game, there's an actual reason there there. In a mobile game named 'Sonic Runners' it explained that the mother wisp loved Sonic's planet so much she decided to live there, and the rest of the Wisp species followed her.

The Parkour was a good idea, but it doesn't work that well as-is without, ironically, the very mechanic that was sidelined for this game. 4:11 Okay, this has bothered me for a while now but do people just forget about the scene before this one that clearly shows tails doing something to the machine to keep from getting robotocized or am I just missing the actual point of this critique because I always see people bring it up despite the fact that you could very easily reason that tails just disguised himself (with the arm cannon being an invention of his) as one to sell the ruse. Don't get me wrong, there are lots of problems with LW's story but this particular point being brought up just has me confused a lot of the time.
At least it's not as bad as blue sphere. Far too grueling, and just drags after the first hundred thousand stages or so. Far too repetitive- especially after the 128,016,000th stage. Definitely would not reccomended. It will completely eat your life away from it's addictiveness. 0/10 stay away
I just found out Super Sonic Has 2 Mouths in Lost world. I always thought Mar- SplashDash just drew those 2 lines on his face to make it look like he had whiskers haha
I actually think Lost World has alot good going for it. The whole trope behind the Zeti might be dumb, but it’s a cool trope in my eyes that can help create some unique and diverse character designs. Speaking of which, their designs are probably the greatest in any Sonic game, with my favorite one being Zazz. It was also a time when Eggman wasn’t the main villain, which was a trope for many Sonic games under the sun. I also like the whole tunnel and diverse level design thing. It’s a unique concept that I think has never ever been done before, unless you wanna count Super Mario Galaxy. Also, the music.

I think the biggest reason I enjoyed this game was the parkour, the feeling of fluently running from wall to wall was really fun and I wish it made a return

Um... everyone prefers 60fps over 30? I mean colours doesn’t have it because the wii is an underpowered system but the pc version of generations had it and it is better for it. Lost world might be a bit bland but at least it si smooth instead of choppy if you don’t see the greatness of 60 fps? Try playing sonic 1-3 at 30 fps
Aw man, I'm a ring! Yes it can. Just look at the water effects in labyrinth or the shield in 30 and 60fps videos. The fact that a lot of 64 bit era games went to 30 or 20 doesn’t mean older games had the limitations (most 8-16 bit era games usually go to 60 except for the graphically intense ones like star fox) It’s also the reason why most emulators have 60fps options but no 120fps option

I think the adventure series is fundamentally flawed but is exectued perfectly since adventure was planned more than the less like a console demo and they shove in all the different playstyles where in Adventure 2 you are forced to do to complete a single campagin

You know, playing it, I kinda felt like the idea in Sonic Team's mind was that the Zeti themselves were transforming the landscape to be weird, thus why you had a weird donut land and stuff. I just don't think anyone told the writers so they could explain that. Also, I think they gimped the visuals on the PC release. It looks a bit brighter there. Could just be my screen, though.
You know what, I'll die protecting Unleashed. It's such an underappreciated game. If only some were more open minded we wouldn't get the blank Sonic stories we get now. And guess what, I consider Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations the most bland and boring stories ever in Sonic's franchise.

It isn't weird at all... considering that the current writers don't know or care about how the Sonic cast was like in past games, or in general. At this point every character in the franchise has been turned into an almost complete blankslate of a character, or flanderized beyond recognition. And don't even expect anything meaningful from the Adventure games to come back in the current games like character traits; Tails's portrayal in Forces showed me that nobody at Sega knows anymore who these characters really are.

I feel the 3DS version of Sonic Lost World is superior tbh. I only ever see people talk about the Wii U version. I’d like you to cover it one day
I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking that. The level design is so much better than the Wii U version, more traditional and fast paced. Even the parkour is better. Some people thought the levels were too long but I never personally had an issue with length.
look guys, i agree with both of you, but it only applies to like 5 levels, and the rest are either plagued by overuse of a gimmick (like the snowman level) or a wisp (like the casino level with asteroid)
that being said the sky road act where you ride on rockets, run while avoiding the dragons fire and in some cases can only access certain shortcuts and powerups by outrunning him is genuinely generations levels of extremely good level design

On top of everything else, I really liked the special stages in the game although I can't deny that they probably would've been better if they had traditional controls since I don't know how I would've played them without a swivel chair.

Level design on the 3DS gets really atrocious. On Wii U it's still bad time to time but you have a Yoshi and Zelda stage at least. There's literally one level on 3DS where you have to slowly move as an asteroid for several minutes.
But the 3DS version has proper special stages. Some bosses are better on 3DS. Although forgettable, I'd say the soundtrack on 3DS is actually better.

This was the first modern 3D Sonic game where I felt like the gameplay was able to spiritually match the momentum based feel from the Mega Drive games. Like, I don't mean that it plays like the mega drive games, but I mean it actually gave Sonic a sense of momentum and control not really seen in any of the other 3D games that just had you shifting lanes or boosting through obstacles. The run button was actually pretty smart since it allowed you to precisely control Sonic's movements. And the spindash is pretty powerful in general in this game. I remember around release the reviews for the game were pretty interesting. It got shit on by critics in the USA, but international reviews favored it pretty well. I recall there being a small meme where IGN America gave it a really low score while all the international divisions of IGN across the world gave it much higher scores. I would have loved to see a sequel or successor released that improves this gameplay style. If you took this same exact gameplay style and put it in an open world setting where you can traverse nearly anything as Sonic, I think it would do pretty well.

Lost World’s story was the only one actually written by Pontac and Graff themselves. For Colors, Generations, and Forces, the stories were written by the team in Japan, and Pontac and Graff were brought in for the jokes, but for this one, they were given free rein. That’s why I find it weird that this is the only game they’ve had a hand in that actually attempts character drama, even if it didn’t work.
If I had a dollar for every time Sega hired a bad writer who openly doesn't play Sonic named 'Ken' to write for Sonic, I'd have two dollars. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird such a specific scenario happened twice.

The sonic fanbase is annoying and make the wrong decisions telling Sega what to do and most importantly they don't know what they want. It's depressing that Sega has completely lost grasp of what this series even is anymore to the point of trying to replicate the Classic aesthetic and coming up with the disgrace that is this game's artstyle.

So about the Wisps being in EVERY Modern Sonic game, there's an actual reason there there. In a mobile game named 'Sonic Runners' it explained that the mother wisp loved Sonic's planet so much she decided to live there, and the rest of the Wisp species followed her.

4:11 Okay, this has bothered me for a while now but do people just forget about the scene before this one that clearly shows tails doing something to the machine to keep from getting robotocized or am I just missing the actual point of this critique because I always see people bring it up despite the fact that you could very easily reason that tails just disguised himself (with the arm cannon being an invention of his) as one to sell the ruse. Don't get me wrong, there are lots of problems with LW's story but this particular point being brought up just has me confused a lot of the time.
At least it's not as bad as blue sphere. Far too grueling, and just drags after the first hundred thousand stages or so. Far too repetitive- especially after the 128,016,000th stage.

I actually think Lost World has alot good going for it. The whole trope behind the Zeti might be dumb, but it’s a cool trope in my eyes that can help create some unique and diverse character designs. Speaking of which, their designs are probably the greatest in any Sonic game, with my favorite one being Zazz. It was also a time when Eggman wasn’t the main villain, which was a trope for many Sonic games under the sun. I also like the whole tunnel and diverse level design thing. It’s a unique concept that I think has never ever been done before, unless you wanna count Super Mario Galaxy. Also, the music.

I think the biggest reason I enjoyed this game was the parkour, the feeling of fluently running from wall to wall was really fun and I wish it made a return

The fact that a lot of 64 bit era games went to 30 or 20 doesn’t mean older games had the limitations (most 8-16 bit era games usually go to 60 except for the graphically intense ones like star fox)

I'd rate Colors 7.5/10 and Gens 9/10, both have their little problems but I think they're still really dang awesome and probably on the top 10 best Sonic games ever made.
