10:47 filling the other side of that diagonal line with an image of the location would've made the whole screen so much slicker. I'm a sucker for creative borders around images
I always loved Generations presentation but couldn't really put it into words. There's just so much of this that pops and really feels like Sonic. How'd they do so good with a game that's main hub is literally mostly a white void.
Bruh don't you ever doubt yourself again - Sonic UIs are a GREAT video topic. Let's appreciate those awesome zone title cards in the classic Sonic games, those were so unique at the time.
I feel like next we need an in-depth analysis of how the rings work in Sonic games. How long until they disappear after getting hit, what game has the most rings per level on average, differences in pitch for the sound effect of collecting the rings, ect.
I actually did play Heroes at like 6 and found the levelling stuff pretty obvious if only because I can still hear Sonic and co saying "Level up!" in my head. The key I never understood though because I was too bad to hold onto it.
Honestly the Sonic Forces HUD and UI look pretty good. I mean just look at the print pattern on the map screen. That looks pretty cool and fits well with the theme. Overall everything looks quite sleek, but still decently interesting.
I think the Sonic HUD/UI peaked at Generations. I really love the nod to the original Mega Drive boxart with the crazy structures and colors all around. It’s nostalgia done perfectly.
Honestly I love videos like these that cover such niche and seemingly vacuous topics that can actually garner a lot of meaningful discussion. So I say “Yes please” to a 23 minute video on Sonic UIs.
This really goes to show that content itself really doesn't matter But personality does Splash dash can make a video about How sonic shits and I'm sure it could still be entertaining I not gonna lie I absolutely love you and "your friends" content Im looking forward to more of your success
I've literally only played one Sonic game (Two levels of the first game) and yet SplashDash manages to make it interesting enough to watch that even non fans can enjoy it.
I always find these overly detailed videos interesting, it really shows what kind of a hard-core fan you are in a good way! I get this detailed about things I love to. Keep up the good work

6:31 That's not Ms Comic Sans though, it's Papyrus. There, i did it, I commented on your video to correct the error and gave it extra engagement. Well played.
HUDs are always such an underappreciated part of video games. They're a lot more important and useful than people think. Also since you didn't do the handheld HUDs, I wanna throw a nice little factoid about Sonic Advance 2's HUD that a lot of people don't know: The Ring Icon next to your ring count spins faster the more rings you get and the faster it spins, the faster your character will go into boost mode.
The UI, user intereface covers, basically everything from the menus and the HUD, but the HUD, heads up display, refers specifically the information and stuff you see during gameplay.
I even like how SA2’s Ring and Life icons have a white outline around them which (to me) look like stickers. Really adds to the skater boi aesthetic that game went for. Also Generation’s UI is perfect.
I actually like the menus in Forces. Other than the start menu, I like how simple it looks. It's definitely not my favorite design, but I definitely really like it
i feel the UI and HUD can be important as it needs to be concise and visually appealing whilst giving necessary information to it. something like forces feels oversimplified but something like generations seems just a bit too unappealing for me, like why the over-use of blue on the hud the sky is blue sonic is blue and the water is blue!!!! >:( edited the comment cause i said so >:(
I like how Splash Dash just takes useless aspects of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and just makes it really interesting. Goes to show his personality really makes the video.
Sonic Adventure was my first Sonic game, so it's menu screen is probably so deep in my brain, navigating it could re-surface as genetic memory in my offspring. But it never felt like it was a Sonic game menu, even when I was 6. It always felt like you were booting up some other program to get to a Sonic game
There being alot of just ''white empty void'' in Sonic Generation ironically makes the menus and hud stand out just so incredible, the busy harsh colors contrast so well with the plain empty whites so it works imo.
theres something about Unleashed’s steel-coloured HUD and green and black menus which looks nice to me. It looks like its going for a secret agent vibe!
I like Chris Thorndyke from Sonic X. Chris Thorndyke's family members are Chuck Thorndyke, Ella, Lindsey Thorndyke, Mr. Tanaka, Nelson Thorndyke and Sam Speed. Chris Thorndyke's friends are Danny, Frances and Helen.
I'll be honest, I like the speedometer in Unleashed. It gave the HUD some bulk witch paired well with the black and gray that fades away. Sure, it doesn't really aid with anything and is useless sure, but I think it would be nice in a Sonic game that doesn't let you go full speed in an instant by a press of a button, but rather an entirely momentum based game to give you a sense in progress of reaching the thrill of going crazy fast.
Did anyone notice how the hands on the timer icon in _Sonic Generations_ actually rotate to the point of counting a minute? Bet you didn't know that, didn't you?
i really liked this video i always felt i was the only one who cared about the ui it's important in representing the style of the game and i love how each sonic game has a distinct ui that fits perfectly with the game's aesthetic (for the most part)
Honestly if you’re strapped out of ideas, you could look at how Sonic looks and appearance has evolved over the years and the different interpretation artists have made as well.
"they're not called Team Shadow or Team Amy, geez Sonic get your ego in check" ... hate to break it to you, but Rose is Amy's last name, so it is essentially "Team Amy". :P
I want a speedometer again but this time with a number attached to it. I wanna know how fast the dude is running for real. Also you could do a sequel where you cover the side games' UIs and huds.
Awesome video! Not enough people talk about the UI of the games, even though they're just as important as the gameplay, story and music. Part of the reason why Heroes is one of my favourite games it because of it's slick yet colorful UI and menu. Was hoping you'd also cover Sonic CD, Riders and the Storybook games because those games have some of the most unique HUDs and UI out of the entire franchise.
At 21:14 the flowers supposed to be an nod to Sonic CD, where it was usually used as a symbolism of Sonic saving the environment, and it being white and desolate was supposed to be some thematic of how the resistance is no longer needed an find irrelevant, and with this game having very shallow story beats. This is actually the most thematic payoff the game provides.
Regarding knowing the three dots in Sonic Heroes, yeah, I was reading when I was five and I read all my game manuals. So I didn't have trouble in the slightest. Great video overall! I never really thought about the HUD's and UI of sonic games till now.
I love the ring count in most HUDs because the "rings" typically flashes red if you have 0. "Time" does this too if you're nearing a time over. Sonic Advance 2 has got to be my favorite because it has everything the classics have, but the ring next to your ring count spins faster or slower depending on your current speed
I will say though, I kinda disagree on the forces UI. Personally, I dig the way they made it go "boom, here's your information, go." I definitely get the criticisms, but personally, I think it's a solid design.
You may say this is random but I found this very interesting. UI in games is an underrated topic that can actually lead to interesting discussion which I think you did a good job of in this video so keep it up I love these kinds of different videos. Also yes you reminded me just how clean the UI of generations is, the game is clearly pretty low budget and small scale in terms of content so I'm glad little presentation elements like the UI are so well constructed
The sonic heroes level up system confused me up until I noticed the more dots knuckles had the easier it was to destroy bots. Also they scream “level up” so that was an indication too
One peeve I have with the Heroes HUD is that regardless of what team youre playing as, the three character symbols are ALWAYS red yellow snd blue. I wish they'd change colours for the other characters.
Many Sonic games were left out of this video besides just Sonic 4. There’s also all the Game Gear games, Advance games, Rush games, and several others. There are just a lot of Sonic games.
For the classic sonic games. It isn't an intentional feature that the icons change when the players colors change, as they use the same pallet and a lot of things do this in games to conserve space especially back in the old days. That's why objects sometimes changes colors that have nothing to do with sonic.
The two times you pointed out Comic Sans weren't even Comic Sans lol. The pure-white text describing the title screen options (6:24) is Comic Sans, but the pause menu and mission text aren't.
i love persona 5's aesthetic and sonic forces would have totally improved by taking some inspiration from persona. persona aesthetics have always been peak, and i think taking inspiration, especially since they have similar color schemes, it would have made several parts of the game look a lot better-

They do have a flowery theme in their Team Attack at least, but you're right
Lmao, knowing Mark, he's totally oblivious to this oversight and that makes it so much funnier

Let's appreciate those awesome zone title cards in the classic Sonic games, those were so unique at the time.
SplashDash and Chaomix are the only SonicTubers that take pointless topics or facts about this franchise and make it very engaging/fun to watch.
What about Cybershell?
Yeah if you can make a video that'll get me to care about Sonic's shoes, chilli dogs and blue arms, you did pretty good.

I hate how the Boost gauge looks though, it looks unfinished. Like having a black bar underneath it for no reason, it looks like a glitch
@@LeopoldLitchenstein I think the "glitchiness" is intentional, given the aesthetic with the menu animations and stuff
@@LeopoldLitchenstein I personally think that the design was meant to be that way, as the menus have those glitchy aesthetic elements.
@@ralphjeremy6590 I guess that's true. I dunno, it still just looks bad to me

Shadow The Hedgehog menus were like the art you'd see in a cd album, that's what they were going for.
I agree with everything you said except for Sonic Forces' UI, I think everything except for the boost bar looks awesome!
To be clear, Mr. Dash, the white in the 06 menu represents Silver, with the blue and red representing Sonic and Shadow.
So, yeah, it DOES focus on three main colors.
There being alot of just ''white empty void'' in Sonic Generation ironically makes the menus and hud stand out just so incredible, the busy harsh colors contrast so well with the plain empty whites so it works imo.
