- Sonic Lore; sure is confusing ain't it? Today I'm looking at some of the best examples of consistent lore in the Sonic Franchise, but also some of the worst examples of continuity in the series.

The entirety of Sonic Forces takes place within a large furry convention, hence the lack of humans. Sonic & friends are the only real animals throughout the entire game.
LOL Every human is in a fur suit except Eggman!!!!
That means it’s canon that G.U.N are furries
Rouge and Shadow taught G.U.N that they needed to dress up as animals and rebranded as “The Resistance”
To be honest the main cast are the only characters that look normal but the background characters look like a bunch copies of the avatar

Honestly it may be headcanon but it's probably 20x better than whatever the "actual explanation" is if ever asked.

@@justcallmekai1554 Imagine if Shadow tells that to Sonic in the next game when there is an intense fight at the end that Shadow can't fight. Sonic who isnt fighting with whatever the big threat is grabs the Chaos Emeralds and along with Shadow and other characters (maybe Blaze, Silver, Tails, and Knuckles since they've already used the Chaos Emeralds or Sol Emeralds before) have a climatic final boss battle.
I would suppose the behind-the-curtain role of Shadow is to represent the original Japanese design, that western marketing axed in favor of that SatAM Sonic, and the story inspiration is to retell the story of what really makes Sonic who he is: the author or the audience. Or it could be about how much Sonic can be made edgier without losing his core spirit, examining if the changes since Adventure were too much. Maybe prove the point that if Adventure had been too edgy, it would have looked like Shadow. Funnily echoed by the actual Shadow the Hedgehog game trying to keep that same cake while eating it.
Imagine actually trying to drive on Speed Highway.
...wait why isn’t this a course in any modern Sonic racing game?
Imagine trying to park in city escape only for a blue hedgehog to ram into it
Speed Highway from SA1 was under construction but in Generations it is more finished
imagine trying to drive in City Escape
Imagine driving through Grand Metropolis
Imagine if you need to pass through Central City but you need to take Radical Highway or either of the Routes from Tails or Rouge's driving levels
A human world would be better, just because it would freak me out if Dr. Eggman would be the only human
Why this is even a "controversy" among Sonic "fans" I'll never understand!
People seem dead set against the idea of a world where humans and anthros coexist, but why? The common claim is "well there were no humans in the old games, so the old games MUST take place on a world of animals!" First of all, Eggman is a human (seriously, why do people just choose to ignore that), it's never hinted at or implied that he's from another dimension or planet, or that he's "the last of his kind" or whatever! Secondly, in the very first game there weren't any other anthros, just the little animal friends!
It is also infuriating that people say things like "it just doesn't make any sense to have these random humanised animals walking around in a world of humans without some kind of explanation as to why they're there!" Because they seem to have no problem with this one random human walking around in a world of anthropomorphic animals with no explanation! It just makes no sense!
@@bowmaj8666 yes I too believe that humans and “mobians” coexist, Sandopolis Act 2 from S3K depicts murals of humans in the background. Whilst it’s obviously just standard Ancient Egyptian themed art, in the Sonic universe wouldnt it be strange if there were no humans? Also, just Angel Island’s presence in SA1 is evidence enough I think. Oh yea what do you think of the crappy 2 worlds thing?

That pretty much sums up my feelings about this utter mess of a continuity, but it bears repeating, these decisions make absolutely no sense; they just make everything way more convoluted and confusing than they need to be. It's even worse that most of this stuff is never delved into in the games themselves. It's just mindless fan pandering!

If I recall, in the Very Hard mode of Shadow the Hedgehog, there’s a bit of dialogue where the GUN commander offers Shadow to work for them, so there is at least some explanation as to him being a GUN agent in 06
The entirety of Expert Mode is part of a training procedure - like, all the maps are false planes of existence and Shadow's training for getting a job as an agent through these "emulations" made by GUN.
Even though it really doesn't make much sense, it's cool that they gave a reason for how Shadow would become a GUN agent. In one of the ARK levels, the Commander even tells Shadow that he recently became a grandfather and wants to invite him over to his house for tea.
That game also explains what happened to shadow between sa2 and heroes if you wait around at the final boss

You are missing a big part. At the end of Shadow, the GUN commander talks about hiring shadow, and the president calls him a hero or something. They basically foreshadow 06, so it would make sense that shadow works with rouge now. He saved the planet in the true ending.

Tbf getting one ending in Shadow is tedious enough, so I don't blame anyone for not seeing the true ending of that game.
Well he made a promise to protect the world to Maria, it would only make sense to work with people that could help him maximize his effectiveness, besides he gets to work with his 2 best friends

I think that Amy/Cream joke still works, it's just been changed a little. Instead of Amy daring Cream to 'say it, watch what happens', she's oblivious and Cream and trying to spare her feelings so she just laughs it off. It's not as funny, but there's still something there.
"Sonic Colors is set in a non-human world" so what is eggman doing there, he is human? And why he built that space park? and why is planet earth a think there? is there multiple earths in the Sonic universe? Angel island is not a thing now? where is Knuckles in the Wii version? Why eggman didn't just call the space park "A new eggmanland"?

Sonic Colors isn't even set on a single planet so... it's not inaccurate. lol
Even Planet Wisp is still a separate location. The wisps are only on Sonic’s world now because the wisps grew a fondness over Sonic.
The logical stuff here would be eggman with his time got planets from the infinite sides of the universe and got all these planets on his space park,remember,everything like this can be generated,and also should be a great theory
Egghead's so smart he found a way to get himself stuck on planet Mobius with Sonic. Born on Earth from the human dimension, some how ended up on Sonic's world. He's the smartest, dumbest human alive, lol.
Shadow joining GUN is actually explained pretty decently in Shadow the Hedgehog of all games. Basically, at the end he decides to put his past behind him and move forward with his life as a protector of humans like Maria wanted him to be. Joining GUN just happens to be the most efficient way to do this, as now he has access to intel, equipment and can carry out his missions legally, plus he can work alongside his teammates Rouge and Omega. On top of that, Shadow's Hard Mode has the GUN commander apologize to Shadow about everything and the Hard Mode can be interpreted as Shadow's training for GUN because the tips turn into dialogue pertaining to training with GUN.

@@narxmagee727 Mhm. If there's one thing 06 got right, it was the characterization of Shadow and Team Dark in general. It's the best he's been since SA2 and hasn't been matched since. It's sad what they did to him after
@@SoIstice Yeah, Team Dark really felt like a...well team. Shadow had his motivations and character in check and he knew what he wanted to do. Even if Mephilis was right even if the world chooses to be his enemy, he will fight like he always has (love that line). Fast forward to now and it doesn't feel like what he was in 06. He's become this edgy dude who sometimes care less about anything, he apparently isn't friends with Rouge and Omega even though they're the 2 people closest to him aside from Maria, and he just feels so shallow. He lost his lairs. The closest Team Dark as a whole has been is Sonic Forces but it's Sonic Forces so it wasn't really much. Oh well I still hold some hope that Team Dark and especially Shadow can find their footing again.
@@narxmagee727 you should know that shiro maekawa the father of shadow and sonic writer wrote sa1 2 heroes shadow story from 06 riders games storybook games from 1998 to 2009 he know what sonic and shadow is and oh right unleashed was from one of 06 writers and shadow the hedgehog game story was from lizuka himself so sega must bring back the best writer maekawa
the biggest plot hole is how Izuka, despite being Japanese, has a bad case of the bri'ish teeth

We need that photo of Izuka Splash is always using except the teeth are bubbled up.
I mean, at the end of Shadow the Hedgehog Shadow left his past behind him and moved on to protect the world no matter what. That is why he is working with G.U.N. in 06.
The Archie comics explain this really well .
That's what I always thought. However it would he cool if characters like Infinite or other future villains taunt Shadow by reminding of Maria and things related with the 2005 game Shadow the Hedgehog. That will surely torture him and would connect the games
@@fabianugalde3789 that wouldn’t really work because Shadow dealt with all of that stuff and put it behind him. That’s why in Sonic 06 Mephiles taunts him with the future.
The easy fix for this wouldve been for the commander from shadow the hedgehog cameo in 06 and for shadow to have a 'just this once' mentality implying that they worked shit out between games

That's the thing that's a bit irritating. They have the history of the universe they made to create something interesting or reinterpret things from the past in a new context but just... does nothing with it.

How we can fix the sonic canon
You know for all the complaining we do online about sonic we never actually use the ways we can actually use any of the outlets that can actually change anything
What I mean by that is when people complain about there no money in sonics world or how team dark are not friends and all that it is usually on UA-cam or on some online chat room like Reddit.
Places where sonic team are never going to see or here are complaints or places where they can at least pretend to ignore them.
They never actually go to the sonic Twitter or Takashi Izuka’s Facebook account.
Now hold on a minute
I do not want you to just go complaining to Takashi Izuka about how everything wrong with sonic is his fault and demanding he change this or that in the lore.
That would just make him want to ignore your complaints and have them less likely to be agnolaged.
If we want him to listen to our opinions on why we need to do a few things
number 1
Put non of the blame on Izuka and be polite and nice
I am not saying be a suck up to him that could be off putting but I think he would be more willing to listen if you are polite to him and don’t treat him as everything is his fault.
I would recommend starting with the words “are you aware that someone working for saga stated” insert your problem with canon here and explain why you think it contradicts what has been established in previous sonic games.
I honestly don’t approve putting all the blame on Izuka when a lot of the claims like Team Dark are not friends are not made by him and he might not even be aware of it sonic is a big franchise I doubt he knows everything that is going on in it.
These claims could come from anyone at saga and If Takashi Izuka is not aware of these things

Just something about sa2 being supposibly "not canon"
Shadow's bio in the olympics is referring to Shadow's origins, stating that it was rumoured that he was BORN on the Ark, but nobody really knows because only the government and the sonic characters truly know of Shadow's origins. Also, Maria not being mentioned in Sonic 06... Doesn't really mean anything. The game did have some big continuity errors like Elise having a chaos emerald with her for 10 years which made no sense but nothing implied Sa2 never happened, and for the whole Shadow working for GUN thing, Shadow's goal is to protect the world and give people a chance to be happy and granting Maria's wish so it makes sense that he'd work for the government if it helps in doing exactly that, infact, when replaying Shadow The Hedgehog, you'll get dialogue of the president and the commander talking about Shadow's "training", which implies he's being trained to join GUN. And for the Maria having been killed thing not only did GUN regret everything that happened 50 years prior in Shadow The Hedgehog, but also Shadow is likely to have forgiven humanity considering how he let what happened in the past stay in the past and is now protecting humanity.
Also I'm pretty sure it's never been stated South Island is where all of the anthropomorphic animals come from... Cuz it wasn't. It's just one of many places they inhabit.
Also, Shadow's game's plot would explain why GUN would be... gun-ho about him joining. The GUN Commander does not hate Shadow anymore. Furthermore, he and Shadow share a past, which means that since he realized the truth about Shadow and Shadow has forgiven humanity, they now have a very, very good reason to connect. They're the only thing that connects each other to their past. They're basically family.

@@purple5823 Yeah, there's a lot of things in Sonic where you can draw very reasonable conclusions about how weird developments happened, but the writing never focuses on them. Robotnik's grandfather and presumably cousin were murdered by the government, he wants to take over the world because he believes he should be in charge, one can see how he got there given the people in charge killed his family. Knuckles kinda has an arc from Adventure 1 to Heroes in terms of him learning to relax and socialize. The first game forcing him into the world, the second game both forcing him to care about the world and him feeling attraction for the first time, and the third showing him actually socializing with Sonic and Tails as friends, showing that he's come to trust them and feel relaxed leaving Angel Island whereas he could still be duped by Robotnik in Adventure and was resigned to fate. Shadow's plot is mostly ruined by the presentation, but the GUN Commander is interesting as hell being Shadow's only link to his past.
@@PosthumanHeresy The only part where I have to disagree is Eggman wanting to take over the world due to his family's past since it seems like not even he knew what happened to his grandfather, as the government kept everything about the event top secret and he only found out about Shadow after he first found his grandfather's diary and when first seeing something about a "top secret weapon in prison island" he went straight there to take it and didn't even finish it, only finding out about the rest during the final story. He even returns to the diary in the advance series when he discovers Emerl. The reason a lot of people might use UA-cam and comment sections to raise concerns despite not being a surefire way to speak to creators ties in with your 4th point about spreading the word: UA-cam is a place where videos have the chance to gain a lot of traction and be shared all over. There's actually an explanation as to why Shadow works with GUN: Shadow saves everybody from Black Doom and the Commander realizes he was wrong about him
In the unlocked hard mode of Shadow the Hedgehog, he seemingly goes through training of some sort
_To think something as simple as Sonic can have such a Complex Lore surrounding the series. But Izuka saying whatever at the top of his head made it so._
The Archie Comics were alot more consistent in the lore with later issues before the reboot and that's why I prefer them.

Hi, SplashDash. It's time for your annual dose of "defending the Dimension concept", coming from people who actually don't even like Forces at all.
See, in the SXSW a couple years back, upon being asked about it, it was confirmed by Izuka that Generations caused a timeline split and those timelines happened to be called dimensions.
You see, Classic Sonic was never suppossed to be pulled into Generations. There was no Generations in the 90s.
Modern Sonic never experienced the events of Generations in his young Classic form. If the two were from the same timeline, Modern Sonic should've experienced it while he was young.
As the time itself was fixed by the Sonics at the end of the game, the unity of timelines was impossible to fully repair. Modern Sonic went off to experience Lost World while Classic's whole timeline was scrambled and he would later be in Sonic Mania, a game which Modern Sonic was never able to experience unlike the classic games.
This has been my TED talk. I am defending this based in what i'm making sense of it. Please don't comment with "It's not canon unless it was stated in the games". You very well know that the comics build off from the games so well that those may be canon for the games.

This explanation has the same problem as the whole Shadow/Hidden Palace Mural connection. It's never stated or implied in the game, so it's just headcanon.
I mean, even if one accepts this theory, how the hell does Tails know about it? The last time he saw Classic Sonic was in Generations, when he clearly was Sonic from the past. Then, when Tails sees the same Sonic again, his first thought is:
"Oh you're that Sonic from another dimension"
and not
"Oh you're that Sonic from the past".
How does that make sense? Did Tails just randomly have a thought about quantum mechanics the moment he saw Classic Sonic, despite having no reason to do so?

I can take it as headcanon that Gerald based the ultimate lifeforms off the murals. It had never actually crossed my mind just how similar the Biolizard is to Perfect Chaos, seems like way too much of a coincedence especially with the roar.
Shadow in 06 is the same Shadow in SA2, in the final moments of the final boss of Shadow's game, Eggman says that he saved Shadow with a robot when he was falling to the earth.
Me: Sees Shadow in the thumbnail falling to earth before seeing or reading anything else

Confusing is an understatement.
I heard a theory that the reason tails says classic sonic was from a different dimension was that the classic timeline was split by the events of generations. One where classic grows up to be modern sonic and the other one that experiences mania and forces.
That adds up and it's what I've been trying to tell myself for years, but I know in my heart that modern Sonic Team (or at least Pontac and Graff) wouldn't even put that much thought into being consistent.
Mark it means “SOCIETY” if anyone knew Japanese would know that he means world “Society” wise. Just look up the word World in Japanese it has three different meanings, if you read the Sonic Heroes manual it says that Sonic hates discrimination. So clearly they are talking about the society point of view I promise no one really tried to put in effort when they researched this stuff. That’s why you don’t see animals in Sonic X it could be giving that same meaning. The President says in the Japanese version that they could become fully fledged citizens if they want to. And as Sega said they did change things in X to make more sense and something’s are still not cannon. But it makes sense with the context given to us.
And editors note CLASSIC SONIC IS NOT FROM A DIFFERENT DIMENSION the Japanese translation in Forces says WORLD, which can also be used in the sense of time dang it. Just put in a little effort on the research and just go off of someone who hasn’t did research to find out anything. I’m not mad at Mark I mad that no one has said this already it’s been 4 years now.

I understood this too. Especially since the guy is Japanese and when I hear him speak English, it's apparent that he's translating what he'd normally say in Japanese literally. So I assume the wording means different things than it usually would.
I don't perceive "world" as "dimension" or "planet", but just as the world portrayed in that specific game. And Classic Sonic in Generations has obviously experienced things Sonic did not in his past, thus making it a NEO Classic Sonic and a new timeline. That's a whole different world right there. They are adding fuel to the fire by confusing people with their wording, but it IS technically accurate.

And even though he speaks English that interview wasn’t in English itself. There wasn’t a translator error in the interview it was no defined right, he said world but it has 3 different meanings it doesn’t change the word because Japan has different ways of saying the same word. With different pronunciations and tones. He maybe can speak a pretty good English but he’s not writing every script and translating his own interviews.
As much as I want all of this to be fixed, having the franchise be ''soft-rebooted'' makes me scared that games like Sonic 3, Adventure 1 & 2, etc will be erased from canon.
If I could soft-boot the franchise, here's what I would do.
1. Some games just aren't canon. Mainly Forces and Lost World because f*ck the Zeti
2. Sonic 06 will be rewritten somewhat, mainly keeping Sonic and Elise as only friends, the Chaos Emeralds unable to cause time travel via Chaos Control, time travel itself being exclusive to Silver heading to the present thanks to Mephelis, Knuckles won't be present as he isn't needed in the story, etc.
3. Eggman Nega is a interdimensional time-travelling criminal, justifying why he's able to screw with both Blaze and Silver

In Shadow’s expert mode, which you get after getting all A ranks and collectibles, you go through the stages again with new dialogue and the gun commander invites him to have a talk, we can link this to Shadow going gun pretty neatly.
Sonic continuty makes Zelda lore look easy.
I honestly think it’s easier for me to follow the Sonic lore without including 06 cause the reset at the end meant nothing happened anyway, so I don’t think it’s crucial to include that game when it basically never happened. That’s why I still consider Blaze to be from a different dimension.

The GUN Commander no longer hates him, he sided with GUN during the intergalactic war, and he was the hero that saved everyone rather than Sonic. Plus the raid that killed Maria was over 50 years ago, so everyone responsible is dead. The GUN Commander is the only connection to his past left alive, so it would even make sense for them to connect. Both are survivors of the genocide on the ARK, both cared for Maria, and both spent a long time deeply traumatized with a hate-boner for each other.

The real reason Sonic lore is a mess is because, unlike others franchises, Sega doesn't care to keep the continuity consistent. Since 2010 they will add anything new to the franchise not caring if will contradict something from earlier games. Okay, so about the GUN agent Shadow thing, Shadow is supposed to have grown as a character. He's forgiven GUN and is using their resources to maximize his world saving capabilities.
I know so much sonic lore from alot of the different continuitys yet. It feels so bad and good.
Im so happy someone else made the connection between the Super Sonic mural in Hidden Palace and the creation of Shadow. Like yeah it probably wasnt intentional BUT choosing to use it as a thread to connect the lore just works really well.
From all I can personally interpret from Shadow being a G.U.N. agent in Sonic 06 is that he forgave G.U.N. for Gerald, the other scientists, and Maria's death and decided that he will work for them to protect the world supposedly...? That's all I can get from it. We all have different interpretations for the blue blur's lore just to fill some stuff missing.
Yeah, and that makes sense from GUN's side since the Commander stopped hating Shadow. Since they share a childhood experience and home, they're practically family. It makes sense for them to gravitate to each other. Nobody else truly can connect with either of them on their pasts' except for each other.
The “why does shadow work for GUN thing” is probably one of the most overlooked lore elements by fans. You see in shadow’s game post game dialogue from the GUN commander very clearly states that shadow has made amends with them and is now working with them, which is his way of putting his past behind him. This is one aspect of the lore that isn’t something Izuka or the fans made up in retrospect this is actually a abridged piece of lore without any contradictions

You know for all the complaining we do online about sonic we never actually use the ways we can actually use any of the outlets that can actually change anything
What I mean by that is when people complain about there no money in sonics world or how team dark are not friends and all that it is usually on UA-cam or on some online chat room like Reddit.
Places where sonic team are never going to see or here are complaints or places where they can at least pretend to ignore them.
They never actually go to the sonic Twitter or Takashi Izuka’s Facebook account.
Now hold on a minute
I do not want you to just go complaining to Takashi Izuka about how everything wrong with sonic is his fault and demanding he change this or that in the lore.
That would just make him want to ignore your complaints and have them less likely to be agnolaged.
If we want him to listen to our opinions on why we need to do a few things
number 1
Put non of the blame on Izuka and be polite and nice
I am not saying be a suck up to him that could be off putting but I think he would be more willing to listen if you are polite to him and don’t treat him as everything is his fault.
I would recommend starting with the words “are you aware that someone working for saga stated” insert your problem with canon here and explain why you think it contradicts what has been established in previous sonic games.
I honestly don’t approve putting all the blame on Izuka when a lot of the claims like Team Dark are not friends are not made by him and he might not even be aware of it sonic is a big franchise I doubt he knows everything that is going on in it.
These claims could come from anyone at saga and If Takashi Izuka is not aware of these things
or at least not aware of how much people hate it.
then if he became aware of it and realize how much people don’t like it he is one of the few people at saga who has the power to change the canon.
If we make it
If enough people make statements on his Facebook about how they don’t like it and how they think it contradicts canon then he might be willing to change it.
After all he stated sonic was only as fast as light but when a fan posted him evidence that sonic is faster then light he said good reasearch suggesting he agreed with the fan.
But if you go in putting the blame on him for these things he will be less willing to listen because he might feel he is the one who is being attacked.
If you ask him politely “are you aware it has been stated by someone working for saga” that money dose not exist in sonics world and then give good point out how this contradicts canon
I believe he will listen as long as you are nice and don’t suggest that anything

Give good reasons for how this contradicts canon and show examples
If your reasoning is just that Well I don’t like it so it is bad then I don’t know about Izuka but I would not take you seriously.
So best to be safe
For the no money in sonic
I would provide pictures of all the shops in sonic games particularly in sonic world adventure and sonic 06
Or how all the casinos in sonic really don’t make sense without money
Or how there are dolar bills seen in sonic adventure 2 rouges level
Or how we see coins in sonic adventure casino
And non of that stuff come from me I got it from this video.
And Finnally I would point out the times money was actually mentioned in sonic the times vector mentioned money about how a cash prose was mentioned in team sonic racing.
how yen was mentioned in sonic colours the Japanese version.
Number 3
Post it on his facebook where everyone can see it is more likely to respond if others can see it and it gets attention
Don’t do him so only he can see it I know from experience that rarely works.

Make sure others do the same so it get as much attention as possible so please spread the word.
5 stop reading this and just do it go out and post something on Facebook asking Izuka if he is aware this stuff is being stated by someone working for saga and explain why you think it contradicts what was established in previous sonic games.
