  • We are doing the metal guttering installation at the big build. We are using a superior gutter that will last far longer than cheap plastic and will look amazing
But the real big difference with this gutter installation is that we can deal with far more rainwater to keep the fabric of the building protected

These roll form gutters have been used in Canada & USA for 50 years. The leaf guard cover is a recent development and essential if trees are nearby. Robin’s round downspout & symetrical attachment method is aesthetically superior and allows better drainage performance than the square downspouts used on this side of the pond. These are the small details that matter. The end user may not have the vocabulary to appreciate this level of craftsmanship, but they will know the difference because everything just looks right as it should be. Outstanding Craftsmanship. Hope the owner has a Tool Box Party to thank all who worked on this project c/w BBQ & Bubbles etc.

It’s so different in every country. We don’t have rollers in Australia. We’re getting it in the year 2047. However, we’ve had left gutter guard for about 25 years due to the risk of bush fires. We also have a reg where the gutters must be 10mm from the fascia board to prevent flooding of the eaves.

Super important points on water removal and here where I live also very dry and can collect the water ... BLOWS MY MIND that some places in the world don't allow rain barrels. Thanks again for showing us all the details of this glorious build.

When I came off the tools because of my back I went into sales and sold seamless and roofline, fascia, soffits, cladding in Bourton on the Water, when with customers I used to tell them " after they told me they had a quote for plastic" " well plastic is guaranteed to leak" and they went " really? " so I took a plastic straight joint connecter from my bag and pointed out the rubber gaskets as being like tap washers and after a few years of hard winters, frost, snow etc, they perished ( very true) and that's when you get the drip, drip, drip, just like a tap, ( that's what ours are doing now in a couple of places)" well with our seamless it's guaranteed not to leak"😊, that usually sealed a sale, where I'd get the fascias n soffits as well on a lot of occasions😊

Pretty standard quad gutter that is used a lot in Oz. That is a normal size. They also do deep flow versions. We don't extrude on-site but can buy pretty long lengths so fewer joins. End caps the same outlets the same called droppers. You can buy pre made internal and external corners but the pros usually cut and fold their own. Downpipe every 6M max. Ours mostly have storm outlet holes along the front to help release the water outwards at a certain level to stop flow back into house. Don't do soakaways. Too much water. If no storm drains then to ground. Or as at my place to tanks as rainwater is all we have. Go a bit further North to the tropics often no gutters as they just don't cope.

One thing that I think worth mentioning Robin is how easy it is to cause surface damage to the plastic down spout materials through careless handling. If you get it from a big box store it's worth checking that the pieces you pick up don't have a lot of scratches on the surface and also with making sure you don't add any when cutting and fitting. I use Flo-Plast down spout and even something as simple as sliding a pipe clip up the pipe can leave scratches.

Hey Robin, love the idea of seamless gutter and your videos overall.
However a few points had me thinking on this one.
The first one is the on-site cutting, while that’s great having it customised, I can’t help thinking the bare metal will start to corrode. The end cap which had channels cut in to looked a prime candidate for that. I’ve got 30yr old half round UPVC on my cottage. The only issue I get it’s at the joint leaking. However with new seals I’m confident the plastic would do another 30yrs.
The other point, and it’s real bugbear. Why not use stainless fixings for the down pipe? You’ve gone to almost extremely lengths to produce a template for fixings. But on the next step looking to save 5 mins using concrete screws, which I can’t help think will bleed rusty stains down the walls eventually. A real pain if you’ve got coloured render.

    • @northernjimbo
      @northernjimbo Рік тому +3

ive had a lot of mixed experience with gutter guards, the biggest problem is usually when people think it means they never need to clean the gutters. Normal unprotected gutters can usually cope with a small amount of leaves but i found what happens with the gutter guards is they trap all the leaves, which eventually compost and you find down pipes that are packed solid with dirt. If there are a lot of tree's they are still usually the best option though.

Great for long length.. But! Have a look at that mastic the donut put on the stop ends.. what a cowboy job..that will perish quite quickly and they will all leak..

This sealant is specifically for this, its a part of the overall system approved by the manufacturer

Yes, it's the one thing I didn't like and think lets it down. There's no way that splodge of silicone will last anywhere near the life of the rest of the system- will have dripping stopends in 2 or 3 years

@@tonyatkinson8962 Maybe, but it'd be fairly easy to fix. I've never understood why there isn't a better tool for applying sealant like that. Such an awkward way of applying the sealant/glue and very difficult to get it looking nice. A single handed device with a small tube (that could be refilled) that could allow for a lot more accurate and neat job. Possibly wouldn't solve the overall issue of a perished join of course!

@@ricos1497 yes, could tool it in to make it neater, although not going to see the mastic and not much of an issue. I always think that mastic should be compressed between a joint to be reliable long term, just like the internal corner detail. Cracking design that bit, it's as if the designer just got lazy with the stopends! Anyway, great system overall and enjoyed the video!

My thoughts too. Would have expected a built in seal of sorts. Seems at odds with the rest.

rainwater collection would need some sort of filtration before use in a washing machine.
