    It is so refreshing to see somebody emphasise how important correct measuring is. I'm in the flooring trade, and I have to struggle with inept people who have no idea how to measure properly.

    Used StairBox many times for engineered oak/ glass staircases. Worried the first time I used them just because.
    Had no issues whatsoever, top product. 👍

    "Have you ever walked up a staircase, reached the top and thought that there was an extra step. You kinda do that raise thing with your knee.. but someone sees you, so you carry on walking that way, like you walk that way allo the time" - George Carlin.

    Great video as always. Enjoyed the thought process and all the considerations that go into the planning.

    I like Sttairbox used them many times, the glass balustrade is fantastic!! I like the clamps to hold the glass in,
    have fitted the glass into the grooves before but had to run the circular saw down the grooves to make them wider,
    this is going to look a great staircase,

    Great video. Look forward to the installation and what you do in the understairs area. If you ever had time to do one on all the regs that would I'm sure be appreciated. Assume the first step if you are using the space under for a cupboard would be to line the underside with fireproof board. Would be really interested in your take on how you do a proper job on that. One day you will set a new building standard. Thanks again.

    Used to work on internal staircases in UK and enjoyed doing them. Now most Queenslanders if they have stairs are outside and a different kettle of fish. But then a large proportion of homes just don't have stairs. Long and low like mine. The last proper interior stairs I worked on was years ago to get to a mezzanine floor level in a converted school. I miss doing them the same as pitching roofs that I never do anymore. All trussed.

    Love Robin's explanation, nice job. By the way making staircases is an art form in and of itself. Always get them made by an expert.

    Great stuff. Have used Stairbox a few times and their oak is fantastic, especially the caps which are made of solid pieces and not splices which tend to upset people.

    Great explanation Robin, and I still see guys measuring vertical FFL to FFL who can't seem to grasp that the stair is NOT vertical. (similarly with the stair well width not allowing for a wall being out of plumb). I'm looking forward to seeing how the 1st floor covering joins the back of the top nosing, and also how the carpet runner finishes at the top🤩 Cheers Del

    Thanks Robin, I've use Stairbox for glass balustrades onto an existing staircase turned out lovely is the glass going into 8mm capping or is there any new type of system they are using for housing the glass into the string ?

    Designing a staircase for anything other than a straight flight can and probably will get more complex. For any staircase I generally ignore the pitch requirement (42deg for domestic) and work off a tread going of 250mm and a riser that fall into the requirements of 2xRise + Going = 550mm - 700mm, but generally no more than 190mm. That will inevitably give a smooth comfortable stair. If it won't fit then adjust the figures slightly to still be in the Reg limits.
    I try to consider the handrail layout so that there is a lead tread on the decent at each flight that then means the handrails on each flight meet and you don't have to resort to ugly newel posts or poorly constructed ramps. It is now rare that staircase manufacturers and less so any site chippy can carve a half decent ramp connecting piece that was the preserve of Georgian and Victorian staircase builders.
    Winders on staircases can be a design issue and I guess they are only constructed correctly 50% of the time.
    And then we come to helical stairs (not spiral staircases!)....................
    If you want to see staircase porn then go and look at house stairs in Amsterdam, where some are semi-elliptical helical stairs.

    Have had a flashback to fitting a staircase about fifteen years back. It was quite straightforward really. However, there was guy at the top and me at the bottom and we were offering it up to the flank wall to get a couple of decent fixings in. Anyhow...and somehow...the stairs slipped and the whole weight of it bent my right thumb back to a position you would believe and i saw it happen in front of me. If your thumb goes to three o'clock, mine went past five !The pain was stratospheric and within ten minutes the joint was a small balloon ! Happy days : )

    • @Geo-vw9oz

      The furthest my thumb goes is 12 o'clock so I couldn't imagine it going to 3 never mind 5 😅

  • @tomsmith9048

    Just keep an eye 👁 on the staircase you're building because there is 3 types under building regs public semi public and private and each one has a minimum rise and going and landing after a certain amount of risers 🔨

    • @lloyd4011
      @lloyd4011 2 роки тому

      I installed fairly standard balustrades and new handrails on our stairs. It was originally all boxed in, allowing no light through the balustrades obviously. I remember cutting them all to size, and actually checking some regs on what the maximum size gap was between each balustrade. I'm a complete amateur, but felt like an absolute pro 😂 something satisfying about looking at some old work, and know it's not in the regs anymore, and then correcting it if you can.
      One thing I didn't check was the rise/going/incline. I mean, I want to do it now, but I also don't want to do it because it's not something I could remedy more than likely.

      @tomsmith9048 2 роки тому

      @@lloyd4011 if it's in your own house you should be fine as the bulkhead will have dictated most of your measurements and you'll probably just of measured off the old staircase 🔨
