    I swung an external glazed door up the other day and knocked the blinking dome glass shade off the ceiling and it smashed. Luckily the lovely lady whispered so her husband didn't hear." I hated it anyway so thanks" 😂

    My very first RC video was when he was hanging the green garage doors. He used the little air jacks to position the door where he wanted it. I promptly went on Amazon and bought a pair for everyone I know. I have hung maybe two doors in my life. Both horribly. After that, I watched as much RC as I could find. I feel like we’re friends now. I lead a rich fantasy life. Kidding!!

    Blimey, Robin, those air bags are AMAZING! I can't tell you how long it took our carpenter to hang our new front door - into existing 1990's frame - & the door next to it, my husband says is a rhomboid - not a straight side! Might have to get my MiL to send us over some of those if I can't find them in Tassie (we don't have any German supermarkets!!) I can't belive how much we have learnt watching this series - been really fantastic & the house is looking great - so like ours - but not - boo hoo!!

    I always use the airbags. pump em up set the top hinge, let off some pressure then it just falls into place. Lovely! Annoys me the painters being rough around the butt rebates and having to re chisel the shoulder lines

    Really enjoyed these big build videos but i cannot help but wonder if it would have been easier to just demolish the building and start afresh. Im living and working in japan now and here they normally seem to rip old houses down and rebuild. The VAT saving must add up to a lot starting afresh.

    I have used my airbags to help a client open their wallet , however it slammed shut with some force after I had been paid , your right Robin when we work like slaves and get very little in return it does feel as though there is a serious imbalance , and besides its always nice to work in pairs for many reasons .

    When you rehang the doors do you need to use a slightly larger or longer screw or will the same size screw get enough hold

  • @wrightwoodwork
    @wrightwoodwork 2 роки тому +2

    It's a myth that 2 people hanging a door will take longer, you simply work as a team doing 2 doors or one person does the hinges on all the doors the other person does all the checks for hinges on the standards. Then work together to get the doors swinging. It's more important to finish the last door first than to get the first door finished. Need to look into getting the airbags

  • @daihedral9269
    @daihedral9269 2 роки тому

    Got the same airbags and wouldn't be without them. Great on refurb work for removing skirtings etc that you don't want to damage.
    Not sure that the lad having that drill with the bit in it swinging from his waste is a great idea with all those finished surfaces about.

    Hi Robin. I know rule of thumb is most on the post when it comes to hinges, but I’ve had complaints from customers with what looks like hinges labelled upside down. What’s your opinion on hinges being flipped? Is it really that important structurally to hang a door?

    Just a suggestion do you use wider door stops on the wider door linings? For example with a 180mm wide lining and a 44mm door I like to leave 44mm from each edge of the frame therefore making the door stop thickness 90mm.

    • @ukconstruction
      @ukconstruction  2 роки тому +1

      Quite often I do, especially if they are all different, I like that look, here at the Big Build we only had one significantly wider lining and it was away from the other doors so we used the supplied size

    Just in case it ever helps anyone. My dogs locked the doors on my daughters x5 bmw with the keys inside. AA guy got in in under 10 minutes. Two scraps of ptfe sheet. Cats paw pry bar to start the gap in the top of the drivers door. A felling wedge to get it a few mm wide then slipped two of those inflatable door bags in an pumped them up. Enough gap to pop the locks with a wire. No damage. I had all those tools but never thought of using them that way

    Out of interest rather than using a block and mallet wouldn’t the torque drive on the drill pull the hinges into the slot without stripping the original threads cut by the screws?

    Anything over 25 kilos is a two man lift.....I remember the first day working on a hotel makeover in Kensington, the site forman said "You, you see that pallet of stuff on the pavement, it all needs taking to the top floor right now." Now, this hotel was a very tall old townhouse, which had eight flights of long stairs to the the top....and those bags of cement were 50kilos each. I can tell you, after shifting about 20 of those to the top, i was ready to collapse...it was like being a bl00dy sherpa ! Even worse in a way, was taking 8x4 sheets of plasterboard on my own to the top, because it was so awkward negotiating the turns . Happy days....not : )

      I was in engineering, subject to paint fumes, welding fumes, grinding dust, all manner of crap. We started 8am and by lunchtime you couldnt see the end of the workshop! Extractors? Yeah right not in the 60s, 70s and 80s. But as Robin said times have changed. Ive seen painters tying ladders together with rope! Health & safety now but for those thinking it,was all our idea, wrong. It came courtesy of President Nixon, along with the "ill sue you" culture!
      That said we were far better off than the generation before!

    Nice Robin, I don't suppose you have any tricks on how to stop a door swinging open do you? History: Joiner fitted the door and their was no issues, i then asked him to take a couple of mil off the bottom as i did not want it to scratch the wooden floor after which the door would swing open. He spent a few hours on stopping it and even added a third hinge in the middle and it stopped swinging open, eventually (though he messed up the frame which i need to patch). A few days later though the curse of the swing came back. He did mention the frame was not plumb by a couple of mil i am just not sure what i need to do to try and fix it, pack the bottom or the top? Maybe the temperature had something to do with it?

    • @m2dat791
      @m2dat791 2 роки тому +1

      Try doing up or loosening the hinge screws slightly. I have a door at home which is out of level and swings open. The lining and studwork is out but I managed to sort it like this

    • @amazing451
      @amazing451 2 роки тому +1

      The carpenter is probably telling you the truth about the frame leaning back into the room at the top. You could check it with a level, the only cure really is to cut the top hinge in a bit widthways towards the back of the door frame so the door will be plumb. You'd also need to do the same with the middle hinge and adjust the door stop back from the door.

    • @wrightwoodwork
      @wrightwoodwork 2 роки тому +3

      If the frame is not plumb, the door will always swing open or close. If the top hinge or bottom hinge gets pulled out say 3mm so the door itself is actually plumb. It might stop it swinging

    • @m2dat791
      @m2dat791 2 роки тому

      Bare in mind if the door is aligned with the lining on the face edges this will cause the door to sit off in the lining. Pull it out 3mm the door sits outside the lining 3mm push in 3mm sits inside the lining Stops will need adjusting and redecorating and more then likely need to adjust the keep. Check the rebates see if they are chiseled flat. Any tension on the hinge can cause swinging.
