Soulcalibur was the first fighting game i ever played i mean EVER, My mother was the one that got me into it really heavy, and it made me try out other fighting games as well. So thank you soulcalibur and thank you mom and dad.
Wtf my mom was super into it too; definitely got me on board as well. I deadass saw her get hyped when she saw it on an arcade cabinet.
My first fighting game was sf alpha 3, but my first soul calibur was 2 featuring link.

I think this and Tekken Tag 1 is one of the few times a fighting game from that era was better on consoles than in the arcade
As much as people say the Dreamcast was a dud that killed Sega as a console company, it still generated significant buzz and impact in being the first console to REALLY make 3D look good, and Soul Calibur played a big role in that.

SC was the first game I owned on DC and I fell in love immediately. Was the first game I entered a tournament for (and placed 1st!) And easily became my favorite fighting franchise. Glad to see your love for this classic
I really liked SC3 because it was my first, plus the custom characters and the sheer amount of fighting styles, because Custom characters had unique fighting styles, there was effectively something like 30-40 characters or something crazy
I remember being really young and going to a local restaurant in my city and them having the arcade version of Soul Calibur. I would play it with my dad all the time and it’s the first fighting game that I played and passed. I enjoyed Mitsurugi and Siegfried.
One of the greatest games ever made. It is exceptional on all fronts, an absolute work of art. Gameplay, graphics, content - it had it all.
Like Max said, Nobuyuki Hiyama (the voice of Siegfried) was absolutely all over the place in iconic video games during this time, though he never voiced Rock Howard (that was Eiji Takemoto in Garou & CvS2). Sadly, Hiyama stopped voicing Link after Smash Bros. Melee & Joe Higashi after KOF XIII, though he at least did continue to voice Siegfried for all of the SoulCalibur games, including VI. Hiyama even got to voice Ken Masters once, via the home console version of Street Fighter The Movie!
Two years late, but Nobuyuki Hiyama would return to Smash Bros in Ultimate as the voice for the Erdrick form of the Dragon Quest Hero DLC.
He even voiced Yoshimitsu in SC as well. Outside of SC he even voiced Gai Tendo in Buriki One and KOF 11
I adore Soul Calibur, it's a shame that it's so often overshadowed by other fighting game series. Hot take, Soul Calibur 4 might still be my favorite. The tower mode and character creator had me playing that game for hundreds upon hundreds of hours.
I love the character creation on SC4 everything about it felt organic vs the newer games. I definitely spent a a lot of hours just there, and the freaking tower was amazing, my favorite SC game mode across all games

I remember seeing this game on arcade in Saint Petersburg, Russia. I was blown away by the swordplay and animation. So back home, I found out that new console, Dreamcast, has this game, so Soul Calibur sold me entire system. Later, Dead or Alive also blew me away, and then CvS 1 and 2, MvC 1 and 2 ( yes, I had 1st MvC on Dreamcast), and then 2discs with SF3, then lightgun games - house of the dead . Console was great
Your "garage lord" story made me think of my hometown. Me and my best friend were the best fighting game players in our town, and we were stationed in his family's donut shop. We would spread rumors in nearby towns in the arcades to drop by the Barstow Donut Shop to fight the best FGers. We had a lot of visitors travelling to and from Las Vegas, which was awesome. While we did whoop a lot of ass, we did get a lot of worthy opponents which was fun as hell. Man I miss that donut shop. Nothing was like playing complete strangers coming to us. To them they felt like they were approaching bosses, and to us we felt like people were challenging our dojo. Good times.
I would really be interested to see how many of the animations used in this game were exactly reused in 6. They all look really good here and look super similar to my eye. That's some solid payout for your investment on the part ofNamco.

This was the game we bought with the Dreamcast, and as I was like.. 6, I remember being disappointed we didn't get Sonic Adventure, but the second I saw this game running I suddenly didn't care anymore lol. Definitely one of the best fighting games of all time.
Got Sonic Adventure after that though and man I had fun. The Dreamcast was such a great system.
The Dreamcast I played the original soul calibur on didn’t have a save card. Every time I booted the game up, I’d start from ground zero. And every time I played, I unlocked the cool samurai guy with the skull mask. Years later, I’m still a Yoshimitsu main.

I can play every character in SC1 to a semi-competent degree, while Kilik, Taki, Maxi, Hwang and Mitsurugi became my dedicated pocket subs…because I, too, learned the utility of fear, and embraced Astaroth. He’s been my main in SC games ever since.

I love Soulcalibur so much, as a series I mean, it's always been more appealing to me than all the other fighting games, simply for the fact that it has wild visuals, and crazy gameplay.
I had a fierce rivalry over SCII with my sister when I was little, out of all the video games I played, it was the only one she would play together with me, I remember we took shifts trying to clear weapon master mode and unlock everybody, She was never really a gamer but some of my fondest childhood memories were because of Soulcalibur.
I had a similar memorie. My sister also liked Soul Calibur, I remember when we get Soul Calibur II for the Gamecube we used to play sometimes. She was a Sophitia main!! Good memories!

If you weren't around at the time it's hard to articulate how absolutely mind blowing this game looked when it came out. It was unbelievable, like "this is it, we've peaked! Graphics can't possibly get better than this!"
Yepp the leap from PS1 to Dreamcast, PS2 and even Camecube was mind blowing people drone on and on today about SSR or L whatever... Frame rate and lighting effects but as far as I'm concerned games havent leaped that much in the past decade not like they did from the late mid 90's to 2000's
From Soul Blade/Edge and the chunky 3d to this it was incredible leap in visuals. One of most legendary fighting games. 2 still my favorite tbo

@@pleaseshutup7053 yea I got that day one! And played for a while.. unfortunately I didn't have much of a local community where I lived and the online was hit or miss :(. Also the reversal edge system was annoying (especially online). Still...I would be first in line for a SoulCalibur 7! As long as Xianghua is in it ;).

When this was streamed live Max pulled up a Tweet I sent his direction showing off what this game looked like in the arcade vs the Dreamcast, which he talks about earlier in this video (Not the tweet but the game running on PS1 hardware with more RAM). I gotta agree with him, this was the game that made me realize that arcades were doomed when I could get the home version for $50 USD (And it was that price, my copy still has the sticker on it) and it LOOKED better than the arcade, same went for when Marvel vs Capcom came out and Street Fighter III: Double Impact. The 90's was a crazy decade were we went from the NES and ended with Dreamcast.
My mom used to take me to this farmers market back when i was a kid and we'd usually get my hair cut and pick up groceries but there was this "vintage" candy store in the market there that had 3 arcade games. Pac-man, Tetris and whoa what the hell is this game? Soul Calibur? I played that arcade machine religiously every time i went to that farmers market to the point college kids would constantly comment over my shoulder that I was great at it for being a 6/7 year old kid. One of my first video games ever and certainly the one that gave me the most retroactive dignity lmao. The Legend will never die!
14:26 - Alas, Li Long isn't in this game - he got his ass slaughtered by Cervantes in the previous game. As mentioned he does eventually reappear in SC3, where it appears he's settled down with his love interest Chie, who I think was one of the leaders of Taki's clan at that point?
I wanted to play this game SO BAD when I was younger. My first one was, of course, SC2. I was in love with that game, and once I saw this one, I wanted it sooooo bad, just to see how it compares to 2. I will find it, one day….. the journey will end.
EDIT: the journey has indeed ended. I have found myself a Dreamcast and the game! I am indeed pleased!
Nobuyuki Hiyama was also the voice of Yoshimitsu in the Soul Calibur series, Demitri, Pyron and Donovan in the Darkstalkers series and Gowcaizer in Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer. Plus Hiei in Yu Yu Hakusho
Soulcalibur on the Dreamcast, oh the memories! I forgot you could mess with the opening like that, crazy! This has all ways been my favorite fighting series, when I first went to the arcade and found the original Soul Edge and went "What is this?!" I knew even then it was my destiny.
Soul edge was my first video game period it put me not only on tekken but it put me on fighting games period. I still rather play soul edge than caliber. I do think sc 2 is goat tho I played all of them but 6.

I wish Soul Calibur had an anime, where it shows Siegfried traveling the world for a sword that can grant him the power to avenge his father....of course, then at the end it will reveal the twist that He actually killed his father, and held Soul Edge (Giving his body to Nightmare) to somehow Bring him back from the dead. Since the other characters would need to be there too, It might not be completely lore accurate. but I think it could make a good series.
who knows? maybe if the Tekken anime succeds more anime studios (streamings and so) go after fighting game brands to make an anime from.

I grew up on Soul Calibur 3. Chronicles of the Sword is still one of my favorite game modes of all time. (really wish another game would make something like it)
This series had a legendary start and really struggled as it went on, it makes me sad that its future is in limbo
The moment I inserted a quarter to play this game and went to the character select screen I immediately saw and picked Nightmare. Dude just oozes soul and edge I had to pick him first. His design was so cool when this came out that he still is one of the most iconic characters in a fighting game I've ever known.

My first fighting game I ever played was Street fighter, Marvel vs Capcom, Mortal Kombat, and SoulCalibur but my most favourite 3 fighting game was Marvel vs Capcom, Mortal Kombat and SoulCalibur.

Saving up for a Dreamcast and Soul Calibur was no joke how I learned to be smart with money as a kid.
I've said this before, but I'm not big into fighting games like you or a lot of people who watch you. That said, I've spent months, investing time and energy into mastering Sigfried and Nightmare from SCII onward. I love Soul Calibur and I think it is one of the truly undervalued and underappreciated fighting game series.
Also, my friends and I spend days in character creator for SCIII. I think the amount of weeby anime bullshit characters we made in that game filled a Memory Card.
Soul Calibur 3 was my 1st fighting game. And I have really fond memories of playing it on my PS2. All the custom characters and stuff too.
Soul Edge for the PS1 was more memorable to me and my friends. I think it was a direct arcade port, and is still intensely playable.
I like how many times Max called it "Soul Calibur 1"...

Soul calibur 1 and dead or alive 2, both on Dreamcast, were just insane visually. Those two fighting games showed how good graphics could really get without any typical blocky pixelated legacy of previous generations. If you scale them up to high resolutions today they still look amazing even more than 20 years later which is ridiculous
The best Soul intro will always be from Soul Blade.

For my first job I saved every single paycheck entirely for a Dreamcast and Soul Calibur on launch day. And it was the best choice I ever made.
I also remember Soul Calibur being the last true arcade experience before they kind of died. It took me a lot of searching to find a SC2 machine at all just to play it. I ended up importing the console release just because I couldn't freaking wait anymore.

Enjoying SC6 still; but damn do I wish it got the love and budget it deserved.
Soulcalibur improved on just about everything from the original Soul Edge/Blade. But it didn't manage to get a better intro. Then again, no other game has managed that either. The original Soul Edge/Blade intro was just legendary.

I remember I was babysitting a group of kids for this one family but husband had a dream cast in which he allowed me to play and I played soul calibur it was amazing that's how I got into this series.
The Lizardman intro reminded me of the Phoenix memes from vanilla MVC3.

I've always thought about how interesting a Fire Emblem x Soul Calibur game would be.
I always thought a Soul Calibur vs Legend of Zelda would be hype, have the LoZ cast use lost styles
Link would have his Sword and shield
Zelda could have a ZWEI like style sc5
Impa could rock the Sword and Chakram sc3
And Sheik could pull of the Bomb and Dagger sc3 and so on

It was the best looking game EVER at the time, a quantum leap ahead of everything else for character model detail. It still looks amazing, though in HD the 2D parts of the background look blurry.
To me, this is still the most graphically impressive jump from one console generation to the next in terms of 3D games.
1:11 When I was like 3 or 4 years old when I played Soul Calibur I did the same thing with the opening but with Nightmare because he was my favourite and I loved him so much he had to be the only character I pick for everything in the game. 😆

Dreamcast really was fighting game heaven. Soul Calibur, Power Stone 1&2, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Project Justice, Garou, all three iterations of Street Fighter 3...you couldn't ask for more
The SNK ports had timing issues compared to the original Neo Geo versions.
But you also invoked Project Justice, the true hidden gem of that system.
I can confirm on the arcade port being oddly pixely. My college campus had a cabinet that almost no one played and yeah it was surreal looking at how less pretty it was compared to my DC copy
The arcade board SC runs on is the Namco System 12, which is basically a more powerful PlayStation. Both Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag ran on the same board. The Dreamcast is a large step up from those specs, so the home port of SC was rebuilt from the ground up to show off how much better that new hardware was.
I have played every main game in the franchise, including SoulEdge, except for SoulCalibur 1, I never got a Dreamcast, it looks like a really good game, overall the SoulCalibur franchise is really good IMO.
SoulCalibur 3 being my favorite one in the franchise, my favorite game in PS2, and overall one of my most favorite games ever.
Missed out. Soul calibur 1 is by far the greatest of them and started the series proper. Even though I love soul blade as a kid, soul calibur on Dreamcast was just an upgrade times 100

Dreamcast is one of the greatest consoles of all time. Soul calibur 1 is one of the greatest fighting games ever. Match made in heaven. And they both still hold up spectacularly

This is the game I have the most fond memories. I played the arcade version and it made me go daily, been after high school, after homework or both! And there was a day when we were like 8 dudes playing this beauty, everyone had a different main and, as I have done since, I always main Siegfried too! :D

Many details are still beyond that of today's games - - not just within the fighting genre:
Leaves and petals having collision with the stage instead of clipping through;
Girls' legs jiggling;
Kilik and Seung Mina's staffs bending...
One element that really stuck with me was its voice-acting. Along the dialogue, every scream and grunt was pure Anime and actually helped me learn a bit of Japanese, as Shenmue II did.
The subsequent entries just didn't hit me the same way. From the faster gameplay, which affected the rate of falls, making juggling less fun, to how different characters looked (to the point of becoming unrecognizable as it went on), and not-as-memorable soundtracks.
Lizardman back must be hurting carrying SoulCalibur lol
There is just something special about Dreamcast games... A feeling, that is just so different from other consoles. And I love it.

Soul Calibur was one of the reasons I wanted a Dreamcast.
And the voice actor for Siegfried from Soul Edge and Soul Calibur and Link from Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, N64 Super Smash Bros. and Melee is named "Nobuyuki Hayami".
I'm still clamoring for a Soul Calibur Collection. Just like these 3D Fighters; Tekken, Dead Or Alive and Virtua Fighter.
I am not a pro in fighting games, never been able to break through the learning barrier of terminologies, but Soul Calibur will always have a special place in my heart. Especially 3, it was the first one I owned, and I spent endless hours playing the various challenges, single player modes and challenges. The one I played against other players was 4, with countless hours of fights with friends, until I became the basement king of the group. I picked 6 up last year, I've played a bit, but my friends have moved on from the series, and online just isn't as fun, since I can only find ranked matches in a reasonable time, which can be too stressful and sweaty.
Compare this to Mortal Kombat, which was released in 92. In 7 years you went from stiff photographs slowly moving around to flowing 3d graphics that look surprisingly good even today. Hell, compare it to MK4 which came out 2 years prior. It's absurd to me that games advanced at such an incredible rate in such a short timespan.
Soulcalibur 1 is the only game in the series i havent played. Mostly coz i dont own a dreamcast or xbox360. My fav in the series is 2. Sucks being a SC fan these days. We finally got a soulcalibur 6 after all these years just for namco to barely support it, so the series is back to being dormant again.

My Dreamcast experience consisted of just Sonic Adventure, Soulcalibur, Shemmue and a small bit of Crazy Taxi because shortly after I beat Shenmue our DC stopped reading discs. I think my brother was messing with burned games or something.
Not that it mattered much because my DC experience continued on Gamecube thanks to SA2B, Skies of Arcadia Legends and the PS2 version of CVS2.
Sc3 made me. While I played sc 1 and 2, sc3 is the game that made me fall in love with fighters all over again
