@@MattStefanFishing I liked it so much that I just watched the video again - quick question: for the Jackhammer, what size tube seems to work best? Is a standard 3.5” tube too small? Thanks again Matt!
Day in, day out, among the best content on You Tube. Thank you for the time and effort. Wish there were a way to film the action of these baits, when applicable to the presentation, underwater. Time and money, no doubt, but it might attract subscribers and views.
I'm here in East Tennessee . I made up something similar recently . I painted a Strike King 3/8 oz Squadron Head green pumpkin . I put a Queen Tackle Black Nickel Switch Blade on it with a Strike King Coffee Tube in green pumpkin . It turned out great !!! Can't wait to throw it .
I saw both Randy's and Johnny's video on this and I was hoping you give you take on it as well. Randy Blaukat is this reason I found your channel and I'm so thankful he suggested it. He speaks extremely highly of you and your channel... for good reason I've found. Thanks again for all you do to help our fishing game! 👍🏻
Here is what I find hilarious. When I was a kid and the chatterbait came out I had one tear off the skirt. I had a pack of Strike King tubes and threaded one on the bait. It worked awesome and have done it ever since. Had no idea this was such a big secret deal lol.
Matt, you did a video earlier on the Micro-Chatterbait, which is my #1 search bait, I think a 2 to 2.5 inch crappie tube pulled over the head like you showed would be awesome...the color options would be endless...thanks for the tips!!
I first tried the skirtless on the willowvibe, for me I like fishing ball head and worm trailer. So it made sense to use this style of chatterbait. It has the best irratic action when paired w 1/4 oz to a 12 lb liter of floro, backed w 30 lb braid on a medium action rod. It fishes deep no problem with a slim senco trailer that I had made custom with uv glow powder, and chartreuse color and silver fleck. The retrieves I love are slow roll on bottom, ripping it whi k has the best side to side wide movement, and the snap and fall yoyo retrieve. It works great open water and around points or isolated cover. I got 3 bass from.the same laydown in a row with this setup 👌. I also remove the standard linkage on the original chatterbait and install a clip I believe this helps the blade start up quicker ,and imo adds a bit of range of.motion to the bait, as it has a longer range it can articulate up down and left to right as you rip. Or speed up the retrieve. I just removed skirts to try out on my other styles of chatterbait! Thx MS!
One of the last bass I caught this late fall was a chatterbait with no skirt and rigged with The Deal.... I like how you snipped the head of the tube,, very cool
me and my partner like to remove the skirt and put a Berkley pit boss on a chatterbait. it works well in sc. especially at night time and in dirty water situations. thanks for your content and good luck this season.
The Dep's Frilled shad works great for this, so does the Dep's 4" Death Adder, so does the Hog Famer Spunk Shad- never tried it with a tube but I love the fact that it holds on like that. I'll try that next. You got me started throwing a naked spinner bait and then I started throwing a naked chatter bait-- they both work better than with the skirt imo. I get more bites and they stay down easier- allowing me to move them faster and more aggressively without them riding up. I haven't fished slow one time this winter yet- faster and more aggressive seems to work better for me in this colder water. I think our bass spend most of the year oxygen deprived due to hot temperatures- so winter is play time for them.
Never thought about putting a fluke on the chatter bait, I do like to fish them without a skirt, but I usually put a 3-4" swim bait on it. Have to try fluke & tube for sure.
Fishing acres of standing cover last year I really enjoyed the CrossEyeZ Chatter bait with skirt removed and a heavily salted jerkbait (the fall was different than with a Zoom one). I lost just one chatterbait all year vs several spinner baits in the same cover. I'll have to try the tube. Thanks for the tips.
Super cool ideas! The only downfall to this time of year is I accumulate so many different types of techniques I want to try, by the time spring rolls around I have forgotten some of them!😒😂
Those powerbait jerkshads are my favorite i caught 7 bass 2 days ago on one and its still good when rigged on a weedless damiki ewg with square lock and they are so life like in the water
I like the rigging tip, but have found that pushing the tube over the head "shortens" the swing of the blade and prevents it from hitting against the head. It definitely makes for a more finesse approach (less sound and less vibration). Maybe that appeals to the Smallmouth?
If you cut the hole the way i did you still get the big vibration and sound...plus if you add a tube rattle you get some serious noise out of it. give it a try!
This technique is definitely going to be a hot bait this year IMO. I think it will be even better on baits that the chatterbait head look lifelike with eyes and stuff. Now I wonder if a tube could work on a buzzbait and spinnerbait.
Have you ever thought to put a skirtless Chatterbait on the back center of an A rig? Wouldn't that impart a great shimmy to the rest of the umbrella? You throw in pop and stop pulses, and I think it would be a really special presentation. Another interesting idea I've come up with for the A rig is incorporating Mann's Three For All on the bottom two jigs, which, of course, could be added to a solo skirtless Chatterbait.
@@MattStefanFishing My favorite mod to a Chatterbait itself is to bend a forwards cup into the blade on the sides with a pair of pliars. It really makes a difference in the vibe I get, so I've done it to mine. Having a different vibration from a stock blade, I see as beneficial to drawing a strike.
I've been catching fish in Phoenix using this exact set up of chatterbait and fluke all fall into winter... Granted we have ,68-75 degree winters.. but still I thought I was big shit being the only one who does this.. obviously I'm not... But it absolutely kills..

The tube looks like a winner to me, I will for sure be trying that this season, do you change your retrieve very much when using the tube as oppsed to the skirt?
@@MattStefanFishing I honestly might have to give it a try this weekend. Even though the water will be in the low to mid-40s, I think it could be subtle enough to work in dirtier water if slow rolled
Not quite sure as I don't have them all. I think the chatter was more of a hype. That's why they have so many in the same brand. People may say the Jack Hammer is best or whatnot. I think the best may be either the Custom Elite with the shorter shank or the new mini one, depending on how you think and what you do. I'm talking about most effective or most generalized....with most hook up ratio and better swim action. The tighter the body should be the better. Again, a lighter jig and a shorter shank with more osillating tranfer may be best in my opinion, although the Jack Hammer is known for quick and decent vibration. At any rate, a compact jig will get hit more often than a bigger rig. Something to think about.
Damn I've been doing that for a couple years I started with a fluke on a chatterbait that the skirt came off then I started making blades off old spinnerbait blades and used senkos ,ribontails, swimtail worms work good too I should've found a way to produce them. oh well I still have some tricks up my sleeve lol I'm still concentrating on jig technique for now
You don't have to cut a chunk from the tube and waste it, eventually the tube will get beat up from the bass and the head will poke through. Just use an xacto knife, make a small slit, then run the chatterbait jig through that slit, then take some Mend-It glue to reseal that slit up, simple as that. Done it many times!
Damn...seems like you're crushing it with every vid! Thanks for the quality content. I've NEVER thought to try a tube...or have even heard of it on a chatterbait.
