Even Finnish made, not just designed. Now you have to make a visit, the factory is on a beautiful lake front. Of course as a Finn I have had Genelecs at home for at least 15 years. Oh yeah and don't forget the chocolate. Fazer beats any Swiss or Belgian chocolate.

Game changer, guys! I live in an apartment and have valve amps and even though they have master volumes, turning down the master is ok, but it’s just not the same as letting them off the leash a bit. Running my AC15 into a Captor X and a monitor, and I had the Top Boost cranked and the master up high and got great tone and could talk over it. Incredible.
I got both the Captor and the X, the latter being one of the best pieces of gear I have ever bought. I run my amps cranked through it, even more than I would through cabs or built in speakers. The room mic’s don’t do justice here of course. 70 dB is ridiculously quiet. I paired my X with some bigger monitors that work well from super quiet to instant feedback volume. Below certain volumes your tone won’t be inspiring anyway so if I really need to go so low I rather use headphones. Closer to 80-85 dB is better and still much quieter than the 110+ of a cranked 50W Marshall. In addition, since I started messing around with the X I discovered how important cabs are to the overall tone. It’s something that I as an amateur had overlooked. Really great stuff and I am so happy I bought the X
I bought a Captor years ago, honestly the best purchase i've ever made. The fact i can crank my Night Train 50 up to its sweet spot and still speak to anyone who enters the room is immense, and it changed how I record. I recommend one to everyone who plays guitar and has a big stack they want to play at home without turning the volume down to 1!
I bought a Captor Torpedo from Andertons just before Christmas, and have been using it on the -20db into my cab but have been wondering about how to use the other functions, so thanks for doing this episode guys - will be getting myself a powered speaker too!
So glad I watched this. This is exactly what I need. I have an orange head. Paid all that money for it. And unless the neighbours go out it sounds crap at low volume.
I bought the captor X when it came out, pre ordered - this was actually right around lockdown time, I remember since I ordered it in hopes of getting it for a silent stage gig I had coming up (it was postponed obviously)… at any rate, it came during the summer of 2020 and Ive used it every day since. It was a lockdown savor, allowing me to record and play while stuck at home and has since become an indispensable recording and live tool. Really incredible piece of equipment for the money. Highly recommend from a recording/touring player
Closest thing to the Bang & Olfusen "all integrated" thing you guys mention at 22:43 are the Revv D20/G20 heads, which are designed to be pedal platform 20-ish watt tube amps with Torpedo Captor boxes built into them.
First off, I will be turning Pete's sip of tea at 1:51 into a GIF for future use when conveying sarcasm, so thank you for that Pete. Secondly, I was looking for better information about the Captor X as I'm delving more into trying to push my amp. Seeing as how my neighbourhood was actually laid out by an airline company and my next door neighbour has passively complained about the loudness of my guitar playing, I wanted to see if it could be a solution.
If you solely want attenuation, this is not the solution. Get a toneking Ironman attenuator. If you wanna run through studio monitors or record, this will be perfect 👌🏻
i've gotta say, after playing through standard cabs for my entire guitar playing years from 13 to 38, when i got a gt1000 core i plugged it into my monitors as i didnt want to run it through my fx loop. i must say at first it was a different sound that was very noticable. but honestly now after playing it through monitors for about a month now, i really like the different sound. super convenient too
Thank you for doing this video. I have all these things besides the powered monitors and cables to go from the captor X to them and I’ve been wanting to learn how to do this so much so I can start playing with it and messing around. This video is perfect thank you a million times over. Also sent an email to the team with some questions about powered monitors and cables to buy. This is the best and so are you guys.
The captor X is amazing. I have been using it with my synergy head to play at home, and the flexibility of changing preamp modules, and being able to control output volume makes my home playing experience so much more enjoyable than when I was using practice amps.
This is one of the best opening jams of all time. Edit: y'all get so in to it at 70db. The strings slapping over top are such a vibe. Hard to describe but it shows the value of a room mic.
i use a 50 watt plexi, captor x, studio headphones… no one but me hears anything… technology is awesome when it works. been wanting genelecs for a long time great video guys
Don't get confused by the attenuation ability. I've been using the Captor (not X) for a long time and in conjuction with my Plexi (volume on 6-7) the -20db seem totally not realistic! It's still pretty pretty loud, way above bedroom level! So the attenuation part of the captor isn't great really. BUT I do almost all of my recordings with the Captor. Works brilliantly. A very organinc and vivid signal that you get from the unit and that you can work with in your DAW. The Wall of Sound Software is cool, but nowadays I'm only using really good IRs. Honestly, the whole DynIR thing and promises by Torpedo are exciting in the beginngn, but once you have used for example a great York Audio IR, you'll never return to Wall of Sound. Mixed feeling here overall, still I don't wanna miss the Captor for recording purposes.
i run my captor x into a mixer and then an audio interface which is then going into an ipad. I monitor the sound out of a pair of yamaha studio monitors, its a perfect bedroom setup!
I've got a 100w Laney, Orange OR 50, Victory V40D, Mesa Boogie Dual Rec Tremoverb and a 20W Jet City. I live in an attached house, Captor X was the best piece of gear I ever purchased.
I’m pairing my captor with a Strymon Iridium as an IR loader and headphone amp. My ‘65 Vox AC30 > Captor > Iridium (w amp emulation disabled, only using cab section) > headphones. Works like a charm!
Looks like an interesting solution. I'm curious what will happen if you do a comparison - real amp + attenuator + IR loader against a digital modeller that supports IR, with the same IR file loaded on both. That would completely expose any difference between the amp sim and the real amp.
A missed opportunity to explain, Gain Staging, for your viewers.. Oh and thanks for explaining what those LED numbers in the corner actually do! Was driving me crazy trying to figure it out. Duh :) Long time viewer, love your channel. Too bad i'm in the U.S.A. Cheers!
I’m running my JCm2555x into a two notes torpedo live, in krk rokit monitors, also torpedo remote s/w allows you to position 2 mics in the virtual studio. And when you are playing live but can’t take a 4 x 12 cab to the venue you can go straight to the PA and use in ears. This has been my set up since 2017 not changing it until it goes bang. Playing through a valve amp is not about feel it’s learning how to play the amp digital is sterile. Plu the torpedo live has a led VU meter
I got the Burgera PS1 to attenuate my 100W Orange Rockerverb and 20W Friedman JJ Jr. going into a 2x12 for basement jams, and it works perfectly. I can crank those amps, and lower the volume on the attenuator, and I still get that huge thick sound of the amp and speakers that works for home use. I do think that is an important consideration, because it's impossible to fully emulate the sound of large speakers in a cab, but this is still a good options.
Love my captor. I do find you have to tweak the amp eq to get it to match the unattenuated sound, but that's nothing. Makes the amp feel so sweet to play.
When I was a teenager I bought a Carvin X100-B (one of the OG models) and had a Tom Scholz Power Soak to lower the volume. I loved that rig, and still have it, but there was no decent IR or speaker simulation of course. Over the years going to college and living in apartments in the 90's I had to stop using it and switched to an OG Rockman, which I also still have. I never use either of those anymore since I've spent a small fortune on various modelers over the years, from the PODxt right on through a Kemper Stage and others. It's been so long since I've played though an actual tube amp I've forgotten what it's actually like! I don't doubt what you're saying in this video in the least. If I'd had a load box with current IR tech the way things are now, I may have never gone the modeler route. Such cool stuff available now no matter which route someone wants to go!
My home rig is 15 year old vox VT 30 modified with a Jenson speaker on the vox AC 30 setting, I have cheap silver horse klon in-between the amp and my Harley Benton vintage series custom telecaster. I love it I don't think I could get a better sound in my small flat with paper thin walls. Even a five watt tube amp is way too loud for my gaff. I had the landlord round a few years ago with sound recording equipment because the neighbors didn't like it when I got my fender 2x10 tube amp almost to number 2 on the volume knob, each to their own though isn't it, whatever floats your boat, I mean for me I've got to be realistic I've got no use for anything bigger than the combo I've got, it's the just the nature of home playing in a house that isn't detached.
Gents, thanks for this vid. It would be interesting to compare this rig setup with an amp modeler (Helix etc.) modeling the same rig through the same speakers.
My captor x is on a fed ex truck right now, can’t wait to try it out with the powered monitors as well as through a 2x12 on the low attenuation mode. Thanks for the video! dsl20hr and mt15 are the amp heads, if it can tame the mt15 and retain great tone that would be amazing, that amp is a beast.
It's interesting that you guys got the captor x to throw the red light, my JVM 410 at 3 o'clock master and cranked preamp (with a loop boost) didn't trip it.
I had a captor, and no matter how i set my input - output level, each time i played my Gretsch I had these distortion like artefacts. A strat sounded good, but the gretsch never sounded close to it being played straight in the amp and cab. I gave up eventually. I would have loved it to work.
I am a new captor owner and struggled with this too. I eventually found a gain structure that worked and used a mixer and headphones. The key for me was actually turning UP the captor volume and down on my guitar vol knob.
I added another jack socket to the back of my Fender Bassbreaker 15 combo. That lets me use the combo's speaker but attenuated as well as all the Captor X bells and whistles.
It was about time you made this video. We now need digital John to come and show what the best setup for a digital modeller would be. Which studio monitors or FRFR, with an audio interface or I dont know what
I have the THR for some years. It's a great package and sits well on the desk. But... I'm a geek and I build my own tube amp with 12AX7 and just 5 Watt. I also build a loudspeaker as a 2x12. The amp has drive and master volume, but with full drive and a low master volume, it was still to loud for the kids. So I build in a headphone amp with different analog cabinet simulations, but I forget that the tube amp always need a load = cabinet. So, the next thing is to build a silent mode for it.
Those little devices make it possible for us all to enjoy what the neighbours might not really 😁 it’s great those exist and it’s an awesome video as always. What’s the blue Telecaster Les Paul on the right there? 😋
I dunno, I'm not entirely convinced. Attenuators are great for non-master volume amps, where the only way to get any breakup was to turn the m*****f***** up. Like-wise, they're handy if you want to experiment with IR loaders whilst recording. But I highly doubt many of us would really notice the difference between attenuating a cranked power stage or simply turning the master volume down whilst we're enjoying a bit of guitar time in our lounge rooms. It is, after all, why master volume controls were invented. I think what really makes sound great is a speaker being pushed hard. It's the dB hitting your eardrums that counts. It's why the rough mix you're listening to suddenly sounds better when the engineer turns the monitors up. It's why Josh Scott insists that 'loud is more good'. I have an Orange AD30 and a Rocker 30 sitting atop a PPC112 in my apartment lounge room that I switch between. Both sound incredible at low volume (less than 1). Of course they sound better louder, but I think that's more to do with the speaker working harder rather than the valves. To continue with Lee's Ferrari analogy, it's like leaving said Ferrari in first gear with your foot flat to the floor and then being so happy that you can thrash your Ferrari around town but still only be doing 30mph.
I've thought about getting one of these, but instead got one of the JHS Little Black Boxes and put that in my loop of my 120W 5150 head into a 4x12. Crack it and at bedroom levels. But anymore I mostly run my laptop into an audio interface (Focusrite) and powered speakers (JBL),with the Neural DSP Plugins. For $100 they sound amazing, have effects and stereo. Just another option if you play at home. Mesa's, SLO, 5150, etc. I'm at my desk anyway so makes things easy and quick. Save as many presets as you want and use a Behringer FCB1010 (or other midi pedal) and scroll and turn effects on/off.
I have the bugera psa1 and a nice 4x12 that i use at my apartment with no complaints from the neighbors. If I close mic the cab I'm positive I could record great tones at home. The line out does leave much to be desired but it's jsut a power soak essentially
I had the captor but the volume cut was too much. The PS1 is a perfect solution for me too. Pity the line out is so crap but anyway, the attenuation is amazing.
@@marksvideochannel3592 agreed! And the line out in anything without an IR option won't sound great so I live with it haha much cheaper and good results
I have the genelec 8010 and they sound amazing - I use them with my Axe Fx III…..the 8010 sound much better than other speakers I tried that were more traditional studio monitors from 5-8” speakers.
Using the DI integrated in the Hugues & Kettner GM40 connected to monitors through an old yamaha 01x, it’s perfect for a home studio usage while having the feel of tube amps. No need for spending extra money unless I buy several amps. And one can play with tones using IRs 🎉
Big speakers can go quiet too and you keep the low end Put a compressor before your amp and an attenuator after your amp. You get the "air moving" effect
The CaptorX is supercool and sounds incredible, but you have to buy an 8 Ohm or 16 Ohm model. Most Marshall 4x12 Cabs (1960s) are 16 Ohms. So if you have multiple cabs at 8 and 16 Ohms, you need both CaptorX models doubling the price. The Universal Audio OX has switchable Impedance at 4-8-16 Ohms. The $1500 MSRP is steep, but you should be able to get it on sale for $1200.
Im surprised you guys havent taken a look at the Fryette Power Station PS-2 and PS-100! I think you'll be impressed! Ive been using two, live and home, through a 1959HW and a JTM45 (both acquired through Andertons I may add ;)) and Its ridiculous how transparent it is with not only the sound, but the feel. They don't have a cab sim built in them but you can run out of your cab at whisper volumes., or just use a cab sim pedal/software on computer. Also has an FX loop as its a re-amping box, sort of like the TAE but id argue sounds better even thought less techy. Would be interesting to see//hear what you think. :)
I run my wet/dry rig through two Captors into two Genelecs at home, sounds great. All the front end dynamics of my favourite valve amps at a reasonable volume. 😊😆
If you want amazing tone at bedroom friendly volume, try the Laney Lionheart L5t. 5 watts of exquisite, British made tone in a cab that’s big enough to let things breathe. I’m amazed Andertons have never featured it as they stock it
You simplay can't compare the two - we're playing in this video with amazing tone at way lower volume that a 5w 1x12 valve combo can achieve & still sound good
Bit too spendy to use with a little 4 watt DIY champ clone into my 2x12, but having heard the name Bugera in this video and then read about them I'm going to buy one of those power soaks - just the job for me at home.
I do enjoy my captor X But when last in a freinds micro studio I pit my Torpedo against his OX box I gotta say the OX is transparent I do like the color from my X but there is color So keep in mind that you can eq your X to a more pure tone (I used his OX as a reference) But for the price it’s a no brainer Torpedo nailed it The Captor is good but the captor X is great
I recently figured out how to get my big 100 hundred watt boss katana to plug into my interface and then out through my studio moniters or audio technica head phones
Direct sound? You mean a dry signal like what most recording software does right??? You can get a full fill sound by adding a bit of reverb/ bass mix but if just practicing then it’s better to be dry as its more accurate. I wouldn’t sell it personally bud because home volume with decent sound is a hard thing to pull off so things like this help out so much. I currently use my Kemper and headphones but started to use my practice Yamaha wireless THR-II for bedroom volume as i have elderly neighbours.
@@Ottophil 😂 i wish i could bud. Last time i tried using a amp and cabinet i got a few hints from a few people on my road I was too loud. “I didn’t know you played the guitar, didn’t recognise the song” & “another hobby you got? Thought you’d be out on the bike on Sundays”… yeah i think i was playing a bit too loud but our walls are like paper.
Running a Captor 8 between my Victory Sheriff and a 1x12 cab in my living room. Definitely don’t love the 20dB pad but it’s not terrible. I wonder if I should try running the dual output of the amp to both the captor and my cab. Still could route the line out to a studio monitor or maybe a FRFR. Should be said, this is most useful for recording to DAW. I didn’t need the X because you get Wall of Sound plug-in and a couple of IRs for free.
BIGGER FEET!!! NAILED IT!!! They need to be bigger than a large amp handle. It won't sit on my 5150el34 without replacement rubber feet (even those new 12mm feet are just short).
Sorry to point this but; and forgive me if i'm wrong, but saw a video where you can connect your FX send into your audio interface and mute your guitar cab by plugin in a guitar cable or just the plug into the FX return? (not really sure where to...but you can check on youtube). Then you can use your favorite IRs from your PC. Please always be careful or you can damage your amp, your audio interface or worse. Please note you would only send Preamp Tone as no Power Amp is involved in this connection like using a Load Box like Torpedo's.
Hmm, can I finally go buy my dream amp? Which is a dr. z plus. I always thought it might be too loud, and even thought about getting a profiler with dr. z emulations. But with this thing I might just do it! And I already have two of those Genelecs running...
Sorry Genelec - I have no idea why I thought you were Swiss!! Finland is so full of talented musical people - love your speakers! Lee
In fairness, the name DOES sound Swiss. Not enough consonants to be assumed Nordic.

Love my captor. I do find you have to tweak the amp eq to get it to match the unattenuated sound, but that's nothing. Makes the amp feel so sweet to play.
3:13 what are you guys talking about? I got a Ferari IR and loaded into my toyota, sounds great! 😘👌
Lee's really digging the PRS with the humbuckers,,,
My home rig is 15 year old vox VT 30 modified with a Jenson speaker on the vox AC 30 setting, I have cheap silver horse klon in-between the amp and my Harley Benton vintage series custom telecaster.
That sound from them little bad ass speakers !! Is off the clock !!!
This is making me now think about trying a tube amp with a captor after being a modeller user for years and years 🤔
"Phantom Power" is a great ban name.
This little set up is fantastic, and something that I definitely want to get at my house in the years to come.
Gents, thanks for this vid. It would be interesting to compare this rig setup with an amp modeler (Helix etc.) modeling the same rig through the same speakers.
Thank you for this, I've always wondered how these worked and wanted to see a video on it
the room mics at the beginning made my ears go "wow"
My captor x is on a fed ex truck right now, can’t wait to try it out with the powered monitors as well as through a 2x12 on the low attenuation mode. Thanks for the video! dsl20hr and mt15 are the amp heads, if it can tame the mt15 and retain great tone that would be amazing, that amp is a beast.
I'm running the mt15 and a dsl15h myself, definitely looking into getting something like this or the ox
I love my Captor X with my tube combo. Usually I play with headphones and it's sounds great.
That soldano sure sounds awesome
Captor X is one of the best pieces of gear, I´ve bought in years! Btw, Genelec is a Finnish company! 💥
Thanks guys!! That really helped explain things in a way that finally clicked for me with this stuff. Very cool 🤟
I'd love to see these demoed with bass.
I suspect you'd need a bigger active monitor to handle the lower range frequencies.
The Captor X is friggin epic.
Using the DI integrated in the Hugues & Kettner GM40 connected to monitors through an old yamaha 01x, it’s perfect for a home studio usage while having the feel of tube amps. No need for spending extra money unless I buy several amps. And one can play with tones using IRs 🎉
What a beautiful PRS my god
Did you know there’s a boutique attenuator creator right here in the uk? Hand designed and built in house. Would be good to see you guys review one!
Big speakers can go quiet too and you keep the low end
Put a compressor before your amp and an attenuator after your amp.
The best on the market.
I run my wet/dry rig through two Captors into two Genelecs at home, sounds great. All the front end dynamics of my favourite valve amps at a reasonable volume. 😊😆
Honest question here, does this really sound better than a Yamaha THR at home volumes?
Considering you are using a monitor with a small speaker?
If you want amazing tone at bedroom friendly volume, try the Laney Lionheart L5t. 5 watts of exquisite, British made tone in a cab that’s big enough to let things breathe.
I’m amazed Andertons have never featured it as they stock it
You simplay can't compare the two - we're playing in this video with amazing tone at way lower volume that a 5w 1x12 valve combo can achieve & still sound good
@@andertons Fair point. Still reckon you should do a vid on the Laney in a 5 watt shootout. Outstanding amp for the money.
Cheers for the reply 👍🎸
Great! Now we can all hear our strings rattling louder than our full blown distorted riffin’!
Bit too spendy to use with a little 4 watt DIY champ clone into my 2x12, but having heard the name Bugera in this video and then read about them I'm going to buy one of those power soaks - just the job for me at home.
I do enjoy my captor X
But when last in a freinds micro studio I pit my Torpedo against his OX box
I gotta say the OX is transparent
I do like the color from my X but there is color
So keep in mind that you can eq your X to a more pure tone
(I used his OX as a reference)
But for the price it’s a no brainer
Torpedo nailed it
The Captor is good but the captor X is great
I get the same tone with the dsl1 .1watt mode, ur right the feel isnt there but great if u didnt want yo bother anyone.
I run two combos with Captors attenuating at -20dB at home as a wet/dry.
_It’s hard to make a Soldano sound bad. 😆 That being said, awesome job!_
Great info and great jamming, Thankyou
I recently figured out how to get my big 100 hundred watt boss katana to plug into my interface and then out through my studio moniters or audio technica head phones
Lee, you are banging it out!
Perfect timing. I have a Captor X on sale on ebay. Get bidding folks! ;-)
Great timing, i have a captor x and am about to sell it. Can’t stand the ”direct sound”. Maybe i’ll pick up a tip from this!
Hear Hear, just get a good Amp plugins for "night jams"
Direct sound? You mean a dry signal like what most recording software does right???
You can get a full fill sound by adding a bit of reverb/ bass mix but if just practicing then it’s better to be dry as its more accurate. I wouldn’t sell it personally bud because home volume with decent sound is a hard thing to pull off so things like this help out so much.
I currently use my Kemper and headphones but started to use my practice Yamaha wireless THR-II for bedroom volume as i have elderly neighbours.
@@Ealdor-Banaman I’m old school i still just crank a half stack in the basement
@@Ottophil 😂 i wish i could bud. Last time i tried using a amp and cabinet i got a few hints from a few people on my road I was too loud.
“I didn’t know you played the guitar, didn’t recognise the song” & “another hobby you got? Thought you’d be out on the bike on Sundays”… yeah i think i was playing a bit too loud but our walls are like paper.
I did a show with the Doobie Bros a while back... they used isolation cabs miked up back stage. They sounded great.
Buddy ripped that purple tele in the intro haha!
