- This movie speaks for itself. In my opinion - it deserved the oscar. At least Andrew did. But anyway, I think that Mel and his crew did a great job, so I highly recommend to watch the full movie when you will have the time to do so.

0:25 That bible he puts away was given to him by his wife. In real life he did really lose it in combat but didn't realize until he'd been evacuated, so he asked that word be sent to his unit asking if they could go look for it. By then the ridge has been secured so his entire company scoured the area for hours and managed to find it and ship it back to him.
It just goes to show how much his company respected Desmond

He apparently, after the grenade part, helped a few more people and let them take the stretcher back, he also was shot by a sniper and crawled 300 yards to help some more wounded but the directors left it out because they thought it would be too unbelievable
He even tried to get down his stretcher so that another could get on. This was left out due to it being too unbelievable. Live your life so that when people make a movie about you, they leave out facts because they are too unbelievable.

That's a real shame, they should have used it in the film, and left a caption at the end, saying everything portrayed was factually accurate

Good thing it's actually written down as fact and history, lot of "unbelievable" things have been written like; 1 man killing 1,000 soldiers with a jawbone.
I was a Navy Corpsman. We heard about Doss in our classes. One of the Navy Corpsman that trained me got to meet Doss before his death (He met Doss in 97) said Doss would take down the name of any medics (Army, Navy, Air Force or Coast Guard) he met and would pray for them daily. From my understanding at his death it was 2 notebooks worth of names he would pray for personally but he would also pray for any Medics in harms way after 9/11

@@blackangus4798 I think he and the captain debated on how many he saved, 135 or something was the high end. He had worked for so long can be hard to keep track of how many he saved he thought it was a bit lower (I forget the low number) but still a crazily high number for one man and they agreed to meet in the middle of their two estimates and used 75 for the official report and his recommendation for the Medal of Honor. He might have saved more might have saved just a hair less but it is still a miracle none the less. God bless this man we could use more like him now more than ever.

He is a true hero, just like everyone of those soldiers who fought alongside him. Yes, they treated him poorly, but those men fought the battle he couldn't. All these men should be remembered in the same light that people would see Doss in. All our soldiers deserve that treatment. Doss should be seen as an inspiration and hero to any who wish to serve

I’ll tell you who Private Doss is. One of the bravest soldiers who saved 75 men without a single weapon to protect himself and was awarded the Medal of Honor
This film did a great depiction of Desmond Doss's story and make his testimony to be known. I actually started diving a little deeper and watched the documentary of the real Desmond Doss. I was so surprised to find out there was even MORE insane things that Desmond Doss went through. This scene where it depicts Desmond praying, in the documentary, it was recorded historically that after Desmond prayed for his men (as it is shown in this scene), NONE of the men died in that very battle, but even destroyed the "pill box" and gain victory in that battle. Later, they called off the prayer and went ahead and in this battle is where Desmond was shot in the arm and got hurt in the legs. He waited 5 hours before he was rescued. When the men came and brought the stretcher and carried him out, Desmond spotted another injured fellowmen who was hit with severe head damage, and was recorded that Desmond, despite being injured himself, told the men to give his stretcher to the other man who has a severe head damage. The men carrying him were surprise but did as they were told and put that man on the stretcher. While Desmond waited for the men to come back to get him, he took a piece of wood and dragged himself across the ground (and this is where he probably lost his bible, but didn't realize it) and by the time the men came back and got him. He was sent to the medic hospital but ended up being devastated in finding out he lost his bible that kept him through the battle. He wrote his section, and request if anyone sees his bible, if they could retrieve it. (Almost like in this scene) But in reality, what was so touching was that as soon as his fellow men heard how devastated Desmond was in losing his bible, the fellow men soldiers all went together RISKING THEIR LIVES in the battle field with all diligence to find his bible. They eventually ended up finding it. When Desmond found out, he was so touched. It just goes to show, how self-less act of love can multiple in multitude. I thought to share because this film is so EPIC ALLY AWESOME (one of my favorite ones now) , but when I found out the real life story, I'm blown away.

Countless. War ruins lives, not just those who die but those who live too, him saving those 74/75 not only saved them but their families, their friends, everyone who knew and loved them. This man truly is a hero.

Antonio Garcia they don’t know the exact number of soldiers he saved the soldiers there reported he saved more then a 100 Desmond being humble said it was more like 50 so people finally agreed on 75 as the estimated amount of soldiers he saved. Also one of the main reasons people don’t know how many he saved is because their wasn’t someone down at the bottom of the ridge counting them they were more worried about getting the wounded help.
Its crazy to think this film actually underplayed the courage of Private Doss.
But they did. And I heard people disbelieve that Doss did even what he did in the film. Yes, he did all that. And he did a whole bunch more.
The man was made of some kind of courageous iron the rest of us shall never know.
It's crazy to think, but he actually survived at least two prior campaigns and was noted for bravery in those incidents, as well. One of the craziest things is evidently a sniper tried to kill him and later, he reported his gun mysteriously jammed a number of times when he tried to kill a man that was later determined to be Desmond.

He must have done it for a higher purpose as his country certainly didn't deserve him.
In reality, after being injured by the grenade, Doss tended to himself and then remained another 5 hours helping others, after that he was finally put in a stretcher. While they were carrying him, he noticed a critically injured soldier. Doss requested to be put down and for them to carry the soldier instead. Eventually he and another soldier were helping each other escape from the battle when a sniper fired at them, fracturing Doss's arm. He instructed the other guy to make a splint with the stock of a rifle and then escaped. In the movie, they simplified this because they thought audiences wouldn't believe. Doss is the definition of bravery. like any sane person he wouldve been afraid of a vicious battle like that, but he presevered because he was more afraid that another human being could be suffering while he could help.

There are also time restraints for theatrical films. If the film is too long and not expected to gross high, theaters make more money with more showings which means shorter-length films. High gross movies (Titanic) remain at theaters longer and can afford to be long in length!

"Let's go to work" the music, the story, the acting, this is one of the few films that gets me close to shedding a tear.
Andrew Garfield is the undisputed star of the film but Sam Worthington also just nails his role as the captain.
The class everybody loves but nobody wants to play as.

The film not only depicted Desmond Doss perfectly but also beautifully portrayed both the Americans and Japanese with respect and showing what war does to people. One of the best war films ever made.

In short, it's valiant and morally convicted US soldier vs brave but cunning, unmotivated, led by amoral fanatics Japanese soldiers. This is just another iteration of good vs evil dichotomy in propaganda. By the way, IRL they were defending their homeland, they fought tooth and nails, and after defeat in Okinawa even civilians committed mass sudoku. (sorry, utube doesn't like certain words.)

The end scene isn't real, the true account is even more incredible and the filmmakers felt the audience wouldn't believe it so they played it down.
Makes a change they have to tone down a true event instead if big it up.

@@吉弘久米 What, asking for his bible? Possibly, though it wasn't necessarily Desmond asking for it. That soldier willingly searched for the Bible (and in reality it wasn't just one). At this point they were all willing to sacrifice themselves for him because of what he did.
While it's nice that the ONE guy went back for it, the truth was Desmond didn't realize it was lost till he was long gone from the ridge. He sent word he lost it and the ENTIRE COMPANY searched the (now fully occupied) ridge for it. They eventually found it and sent it to him.

This movie was brutal. When you have a guy literally using a dead soldier who's legs were blown off as a shield you get an idea what people went through.
And then the Okinawa veterans who attended the premiere said the movie was very realistic; "That's how it was..." :o
The movie was definitely brutal. The notion that a human torso will provide protection against rifle rounds is absurd, though.

Deshaun Allison well we’d need to take into account the caliber the enemy is using. The enemy uses bolt action and semi automatic rifles such as the type 33. All the Japanese guns were chambered In 6.5×50mm Arisaka. This is enough to penetrate a human, but it is not a full power Cartridge. If it was to penetrate the torso, it would come out fragmented and soften the blow to a few minor cuts.
I really love that scene in the end. He was getting lowered down with him sighing relief, but they pan the camera downwards making it look like he's going up to heaven. And you know damn well he's up there.

One of the best cinematic shots ever
The movie left out one of the most amazing parts. After kicking that grenade, he continued to try and save more men, eventually being shot in the arm by a sniper and having it broken. He splinted his arm, then CRAWLED 300 yards before finally being saved.
Just the fact kicked away 2 grenades probably saved 20 more lives.
Nothing indicates he ever did such a thing. He was hit by a mortar, not a grenade that he supposedly kicked, which makes sense because as a medic with no weapon it would make no sense to be in the front charge, but coming directly up the rear where he could see who got hit.

What's interesting though is I watched 3 different documentaries, and not one agreed on how he got the initial leg wound, the only thing they agreed on was the sniper wound and him giving up the stretcher.

Its a testament to Pvt Doss when they have to tone down his actions for a film about his life rather than inflate them by 10 to make him sound more impressive.
Its also a further testament to him that he didn't consider himself a hero rather a man doing his job and saving lives.

Actually it was after they had gained control over hacksaw ridge that the officer in charge of his order that they search for the bible. The director didn't include it cuz he thought people wouldn't believe it.
His entire battalion searched for his bible. When it was found, it was sent to the hospital ship and given to PVT Doss

In the real battle that his unit refused to go into action before he was finished prayer, they did not suffer a single casualty. The objective was taken and a series of pillboxes were even taken without any casualties. That is mythological level of morale and protection. Meanwhile, the time they interrupted his prayer they took severe casualties including Doss himself. He was sent home after that so there was no 3rd attempt to see if he would be able to repeat such a feat.

This scene probably captures just how much of a morale boost Doss was that night when he saved so many lives. A lot of people probably thought that going up onto that ridge again meant the death of them but if a guy without even a firearm saved almost 100 people, you gotta live up to their expectations if they are willing to go above and beyond.

They don’t really tell us in the movie, but in the final assault, the one where Pvt. Doss prayed for everyone, not a single U.S. soldier in his company was even hurt, except for one soldier with a rock scratch from climbing up the ridge.

I think its to show Doss gave them strength. In the first battle alot of soldiers were terrified.
As a lot of people have already said, he wasn’t out right on a stretcher, he refused aid, treated his own wounds, and stayed on that ridge for another 5 hours doing what he does best. He then evaced off the ridge carrying a wounded soldier, where he was shot by a Japanese sniper. Doss instructed the wounded soldier how to construct a splint with the stock of a rifle, and then and only then allowed himself to be lowered off the ridge by other medics.
His amount of men saved alone is staggering, but what I think people often overlook is the massive morale boost he gave every man on Hacksaw Ridge.
*What happened was actually a lot crazier/heroic.*

_Other changes to the story occur near the end of the movie, when Doss is placed on a stretcher. In real life, Doss had another wounded man take his place on the stretcher. After treating the soldier, a sniper shot fractured Doss's arm, and he crawled 300 yards (270 m) to safety after being left alone for five hours. Gibson omitted that from the film because he felt that the audience would not find the scene believable._
So I’m guessing they changed that to the movie’s sniper scene which is followed by the intense action dragging scene before this final sequence
Another touching moment was he actually did lose him bible but he didn't realize till he was long gone from the ridge. He sent word and the entire company searched the ridge (now totally occupied and safe) till they found the bible and mailed it to him

something i like about this last battle is the scenes showing the japanese leaders committing seppuku. it shows that, while being enemies from the protaganists perspective (and during the actual war), the japanese were still people. people with customs and values, just like everyone else in the war. something not a lot of war movies do.

Blue Baron “based” mostly on the fact that the movie didn’t fully depict everything that Pvt Doss did. Just knowing that Doss did even more than what the movie depicted shows just how much of a badass he was, and why he deserved to receive the highest military medal an American can receive.

3:04 My Great Great Uncle tried to do the same thing Doss is doing right here. He was mortally wounded by a grenade he tried to throw back on a southern Okinawa ridge, though I presume it went off too early and he was pronounced DOW (Died of Wounds). He was only 19.

Update on this, after doing a bunch of research, I found his field hospital report.. And suffice it to say I got chills and felt a little sick to my stomach after reading it. Matches up with the grenade being the cause of death.

The amount of respect Doss gained and how much he has for them is awe inspiring. They initially all practically hated him and thought of him as a lazy coward who had it easy with some of his fellow soldiers literally threatening to kill him, only to be proven extremely wrong with him showing such determination in saving lives rather than taking them. They refused to go back to Hacksaw Ridge without him because they knew he was an integral part of their squad despite knowing that Saturdays were usually his day of rest and that they would be asking a lot from him for going against what he believed in with his convictions. This movie showed how seriously devoted Desmond was to his religion even refusing to go against his beliefs when it could've gotten him unfairly incarcerated, but he still chose to go back up to Hacksaw because those men had become his brothers in arms and did something he usually never did, he broke his normal routine and worked on his Sabbath and the fact that his entire company waited for him shows how much they appreciated his sacrifice for them.
Even Christ himself healed on the Sabbath. I think Doss realized that doing good on the Sabvath by treating his comrades was no sun.
Something the movie didn't show. At Hacksaw when they waited for him to finish his prayers (it actually put them farther behind than just 10 minutes) the Americans didn't have a single casualty while capturing the hill which is damn impressive when you realize they even took pillbox locations. He was wounded in the follow up battle, not on Hacksaw.

I started crying when the real Desmond Doss made an appearance at the end. He is a real hero America deserved and,as sad as it is,he is now finally up in Heaven with his wife,family,and possibly some of the friends he fought with and saved during the war.

I heard from a very reliable source that while they were transporting him to be evacuated after that grenade incident, one of the stretcher bearer got shot so Pvt Doss got up , patched the man up after giving mouth-to-mouth res and morphine, he placed the wounded man on the stretcher and helped carried him to safety. So that makes it 75

In reality (it's documented), there were zero casualties when they first went up the escarpment after he prayed for them. On the next trip, he didn't get to pray for them, and that's when they started having casualties.

This movie was great in showcasing a soldier who saved *many* lives as a medic under the most brutal circumstances and with a *supreme* level of bravery because he refused to bear weapons *even* in self defence in order to avoid harming anyone in breach of his *personal* spiritual convictions. In doing so he set an excellent standard for other combat medics to follow because *had* he been inclined to use weapons even in self defence he probably would have been killed at the beginning of the battle, and therefore unable to save all those lives.
4:00 The only issue is the filmmaker decided to *contrast* - the ancient Japanese tradition of ending ones life to avoid the shame of defeat plus the strike to the neck as an act of compassion to alleviate the pain - with the American tradition of saving each life especially their own. This is the sort of juxtaposition that certain great filmmakers would have avoided, despite promoting *the same* righteous spiritual principles in their films. Although I don’t agree with ritual suicide either because there is *no shame* in fighting honourably and losing.
