That band is SO great, all of them not only the bass player, from David to each and every one of them, this is what it means to be real musicians and to be able to play live on a session, you would NEVER get accepted to play with those guys if you did not know music and able to truly be a musician, not a wannabe, OFC Kate is the cherry on the top she is beyond words.
Right there with you. I drop by for a listen every now again and end up having it on repeat for a couple of hours. I was 10 when it was originally released as a single and it was the first time I'd heard anything by Kate Bush. It sounded like nothing else in the charts at that time and immediately grabbed you, but this live version is just astonishingly good and the credit must go to DG for having the vision to make it happen.
Ça fait plaisir de revoir et de réécouter ces pointures en ces temps médiocres ! On soulignera le jeu de basse absolument exceptionnel derrière tout cela :o)
My one and only trip to London was the weekend of this concert. My friend and I bought scalped balcony tickets the day of the show. Loved every minute!
I Love to see how Kate Bush communicates with the band with smiles. With David Gilmour first and then with the drummer. It is like: are we doing good? and the smile answers her. Love it.
I think the reluctance of Kate Bush to play live comes from the pressure she puts on herself to create a huge show filled with theatrics and dance and all the tiring rehearsal that involves. This performance here proves that if she wanted to she could do a straightforward show/tour, just holding a mic in front of a live band and singing. It's actually very rare to see her doing just that and it works great.
Also she was devastated when a stagehand fell to his death from the catwalks just before one of her first ever concerts. She fought her way through the rest of the tour and then rejected further concert tours.
This was a special occasion. This was one of the last "Secret Policeman's Ball" concerts. The album this is on is "The Secret Policeman's Third Ball." That's where I first heard it.
I discovered Kate Bush through the Hounds of Love album when I was 11 in 1984. It was the year my father died suddenly and Cloudbusting helped me through. Seeing Kate play live at the Hammersmith Apollo in 2014 from the middle of the 4th row was so emotional. I thought she wouldn't play Cloudbusting when the concert ended ..but she came back and sung it for the encore...an experience I will never forget. Hounds of Love was released in the days well before Spotify when we would listen to whole albums. I always imagined the story she was telling on the Hounds of Love from start to finish and her live performance was exactly how I imagined - "And Dream of Sheep" was so powerful - in fact, many powerful moments in that show that I will always feel privileged to have experienced. Kate's music got me through the toughest time of my life and will always be in my heart
I am so happy you got to see her live - especially with the encore of Cloudbusting. I've got the Before the Dawn concert on CD. Love how she shows appreciation for the crowd - giving her a standing ovation. She knows she's there for them - class act.
I saw Kate Bush on SNL when I was 16 years old. My dad didn’t like her but I did. I’m 60 now and I still love her & her music. This video I could watch 1000 times a day. Im so glad she is getting the recognition that she deserves❤️
Never knew who this was. Such a bizarre song when it came out. Hypnotic, emotional, evokes emotion. Dark recess of the mind fire off, hope, longing, happiness. It's just so awesome.
IMHO, this song is ne of the greatest works of art to come from the 80s, regardless of genre. This is a good, energetic version, however, IMHO, a few of your well-chosen words, "hypnotic" & "dark" do not apply to this live version as much as they did when you described the album version. The iconic modified "cello" part done with the Fairlight CMI is missing here & the Fairlight CMI choir seems to be absent too. (Much of the ttime, it was hard to hear the synth part, so I'm not 100% sure whether or not the JP-8 was playing some sort of choir sound, although nothing sounds like a Fairlight.)
I love Floyd .... I absolutely love Kate Bush, i do not know how i have missed this absolute masterclass in sounds ........ Brilliant and thank you to all who made this possible x
The Bassist and the Drummer are obvious talents, because they make it breathe with the life Kate's Music deserves. Thanks to Gilmour for making sure our world didn't miss her vision.
Gilmour was the guy who discovered Kate Bush was immensely talented and helped her record a demo to present to record labels. This is the two of them coming full circle. So glad there is footage of this
I start thinking she might very well be the best female pop/rock musician in history of modern music, it was always close between her and Cyndi lauper, Tina turner, Whitney houston and few others, but she is really having edge over them, with time she is surpassing them, still very close between her and Cyndi but she has the edge.
@@Michael-mm3fm i said she was having the edge due to her writing her own stuff, but whitney had better voice and tina had better sense of the market and was more of a libero type performer... very hard to win against rod stewart and tina.. they were incredible.. kate wins only because she wrote her own music.
At 2:57 I got some serious goosebumps. Always loved this song. So glad it's finally getting the attention it deserved decades ago. #1 on the charts in the UK 37 years later.
Kate Bush performs so little that I swear a part of me forgets she's a real person as opposed to some sort of pop mythological figure until I watch videos like this. Honestly how is it possible for one woman to evoke such massive amounts of emotion with just her voice?
Patrick She didn't play often with Dave, but Stuart Elliott had been her drummer since 1978. Edit: August '77 actually, when the first album was recorded. Then all albums up to and including "Aerial" 2005.

The way they look at each other and smiles is so sweet. I'm so glad they did this, it's the only live performance of the song.
I think this version adds that rock element that was there but was under played. Now it has an edge and a good edge at that, a fantastic musical and vocal performance l thank Kate and David for this brilliant live version.

I can't anyone hasn't heard this song, glad you have now.
Have you lived under a stone or what.
@@BavarianHerz They don't play this song on American radio. I heard it on an English radio station.
Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of Kate Bush
This needs to be remastered. It is so wonderful!
I Agree
Legendary performance from Kate, David and the whole band! Tony Franklin is phenomenal!
Don't forget the pianist and the drummer they all went all killed it and fun fact the drummer is a good friend of Kate Bush they had worked on one of her first albums
@@adammoore652 Yep. Stuart Elliott played from "The Kick Inside"1978 to "Aerial" 2005.
Tony has a UA-cam channel now, and he has a video where he talks about this particular show.
Tony Franklin's bass runs are absolutely beautiful here. The root notes are driving the song so hard and then the runs come in and just add that little extra. Gilmore's guitar sounds amazing and Kate is absolutely killing the vocals, you can see her confidence grow from the start and she just blooms.
Couldn't agree more
Yes, I think that they all knew they had absolutely nailed it! Great performance.
Thank you!
Yes they are so awesome
Probably the best version of this song
It’s rare for a live version to so accurately do a studio track justice. I mean live versions can be great in their own right or in a different way, but this actually sounds like the studio version and not watered down in any way. It just kicks arse.
Well.
I think this is what a hard rockin' Kate Bush band would have been.
Heaven 😍
There are times when the live version is better than the studio one.
I see Gary Numan's "Joy circuit" best example.
Well said. It comes from a time when the radio was filled with great musicians, and if you wanted great music, you needed great musicians to play it.
It appears they’re swapping the synth lead parts for guitar in this version. And it sounds way more dynamic.
I hate other peoples screams
Let's give it up for the drummer - this song doesn't work without that haunting, relentless beat.
It's Stuart Elliott
He was the original drummer on the song I heard.
@@demah8655 Yes, Stuart Elliott played along with a Linn Drum Machine programmed by Kate's then-boyfriend Del Palmer, who also played bass on the original track.
Tony Franklins hair, surpassed only by his fretless awesomweness
Thank you God to have given the chance to live on earth at the same time than Kate Bush.
In this world of social media has beens, and worn out auto tune garbage, it’s so refreshing to see someone I’ve loved for years get the recognition she deserves!! Nailed it!!
every singer/performer used to dream of having such band in the backround flying them up to peak performance, this was literally the dream of every performer back in the day, OFC they all were musicians including the ones who only sang,
and then came "american idol" & the rest is, well, rest ...
I agree that it's refreshing for her to get the recognition she deserves but if your impression of music these days is all "social media has beens, and worn out auto tune garbage", that's on you - it's easier than ever to find good music and there's more of it being made now than there ever has been
@@smarroy Not even close to this level come on now, not even remotely close, there is only one tears for fears, only one george michael, only one kate bush, only one prince, only one freddie mercury, it all ended. Today it is pathetic.
@@michelleper5065 isn't it interesting that everyone thinks the best music ever was the music that came out when they were a teenager? or could it be that most people stop seeking out new music when they hit 25 or so, and refuse to admit they're not cool anymore when a new generation of artists comes along that they don't get
Everybody I speak to just doesn't get Kate Bush, so I'm really pleased to prove at last what a fabulous talent she is.
Tony is in the zone here...really wondrous bass playing driving the song along.
No other bass player on the planet could pull off that performance other than Tony franklin ,,,, absolute work of art.... ❤
Mark King or that bloke from kajagoogoo could do a better job on bass
@@mattleyland194 Killer players, but Tony owns this performance. No need to suggest anyone else.
Franklin's bass work elevates this piece significantly.
When the gods get together, something like this happens..... I've got goosebumps, this is outstanding
Well said
Me too
well said.
pure heaven!!!
Fu*K yeah there the true gods of good music!
I love how she was nervous at the start then gradually gained confidence and was really enjoying herself at the end :)
The bassist though!! Awesome 👌👍🏻🤘🤘
You can really see Kate get more confident and comfortable as the song goes on
What the actual perfection??!! How am I only seeing this now??!!
she was a master craftswoman way way way ahead of her time. words fail me
The Bassist is Tony Franklin, and he's absolutely killing it here!
Blue Murder
Thank you!!!
Such an amazing performance. It had me in tears to see such a powerhouse of chemistry. I wish this group of amazing individuals would have done more together
My daughter asked me if I had ever heard this song....I went and pulled out my Kate Bush cd I bought in the late 80's and she tripped out. Glad the youth are discovering the great ol jams....even if it's through a tv series.
So cool...I love this whole album
If it’s through the means of new media that we bring back soul in the world charts then so be it. Probably the best news i’ve seen in years.
Vinyl would be even cooler
You only have one? Start with 'Never For Ever' and proceed from there.
So glad new generations discover this song. I would be considered somebody of one of those new generations too at 26 hahaha..ah well..details :p There's a good reason this was my favorite Kate Bush song long before Stranger Things came out. It's magical.
Me too!
@@simonbrehm358 I worry for you bro.
Honestly, it conveys so much emotion everytime I hear this song I feel it in chest, i'm SO glad people are finally discovering her again.
26? Yeah I think you are one of the new ones. lol. I'd been listening to Kate since the 80s.
This is really a great song!
Tony Franklin was one of THE 80s best bass players. Killing it here.
Tony Frankilin is a bit of an unsung hero on this video. Superb bass playing and he even managed to keep that strange thing on his head from falling off.
oh god, this version is incredible! the whole band brings magic on this one. you can see on their faces that they can feel something special is happening.
Absolutely beautiful exactly U can see at the end in there eyes
I have tears in my eyes because THAT was bloody MEGA.. Kate is a Goddess and with a legend like Gilmour and awesome backing this has made my day!
And increadibly everyone is listening to this brilliant song by Kate again today :)
Always tears with this song. Music is awesom ❤️🦋🔥
Nova Chap Dave also plays on "Rocket's Tail" and "Love and Anger". Provided backing vocals for "Pull Out the Pin"
This is so good, the bassist makes that version unbelievable
Where has this kind of music gone ?
I had no idea till today that David Gillmore discovered her when she was 13, and by 19 she wrote over 40 songs.
Amazing.
She was 15 and when he got her with producers and engineers, she already had over 40 songs. At 15.
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched this over the years. She really is incredible ❤️
I like how when she looks at her bandmates they smile back at her.
Ça fait plaisir de revoir et de réécouter ces pointures en ces temps médiocres ! On soulignera le jeu de basse absolument exceptionnel derrière tout cela :o)
The real musicians, the real artists, pure quality in 1980s.
Rare footage of David Gilmour playing a Steinberger. Love this performance.
My one and only trip to London was the weekend of this concert. My friend and I bought scalped balcony tickets the day of the show. Loved every minute!
With David Gilmour, this song is PURE!!
I Love to see how Kate Bush communicates with the band with smiles. With David Gilmour first and then with the drummer. It is like: are we doing good? and the smile answers her. Love it.
Yeah and also, it helps signal the other band members the song is ending, she looks first at the bassist and then the drummer
She starts to relax at around 3:50 mark when Gilmour makes eyes contact and smiles
It's actually very rare to see her doing just that and it works great.
shes also pathologically shy
@@hansolo2121 dude she's not lip syncing at all
Maybe she knows she's dogshit at singing
Have you ever heard "Something Good", by Utah Saints? It's from the early 90's and it samples "Cloudbusting", kind of a remix in a way.
@@matthewwoelfle5533 I remeber Something Good from when it came out 1992, but didn't know that was a Kate Bush sample.
Thanks for your story!
Wow what a memory! I’m going to buy a few more Kate CDs.
I wish I could’ve seen her SNL performances but they’re nowhere to be found on UA-cam 😢
Tony Franklin seriously rocking his own bass line on this!
Love the transcriptions of all instruments in this version. The guitar doin angular synth lines is brilliant. Tony bringing the funk is so fun too!
Kate one of the most creative interesting artists ever
I love Floyd .... I absolutely love Kate Bush, i do not know how i have missed this absolute masterclass in sounds ........ Brilliant and thank you to all who made this possible x
The Bassist and the Drummer are obvious talents, because they make it breathe with the life Kate's Music deserves. Thanks to Gilmour for making sure our world didn't miss her vision.
Brian Marten Stuart Elliott. Kate's drummer since 1977.
This is pretty badass. Kate Bush is amazing...
Shie is so sweet, and nice, just fantastici always from a Brazilian fan...
Record companies were then riding the Gravy Train. Any tape Gilmour presented , they would treat with special care. So, Kate Bush was born.
@@ec03nd2 As they should, i wish it remained this way then you would have little more kates and much less britneys, eh? God have mercy.
@@michelleper5065 interesting selection, did Houston or Turner write their own stuff? No. Bush is on a separate planet.
@@Michael-mm3fm i said she was having the edge due to her writing her own stuff, but whitney had better voice and tina had better sense of the market and was more of a libero type performer... very hard to win against rod stewart and tina.. they were incredible.. kate wins only because she wrote her own music.
If David Gilmour is your guitarist and sings background vocals, you must have a hell of a lot of talent.
At 2:57 I got some serious goosebumps. Always loved this song. So glad it's finally getting the attention it deserved decades ago. #1 on the charts in the UK 37 years later.
Yeah that middle eight takes it up a gear brilliantly
Kate Bush performs so little that I swear a part of me forgets she's a real person as opposed to some sort of pop mythological figure until I watch videos like this. Honestly how is it possible for one woman to evoke such massive amounts of emotion with just her voice?
As if the song isn't legendary enough, David Gilmour's accompaniment makes this punch a hole in the sky.
And the mullet-wearing bass player, he defo did his part
I get positive energy from this performance. ❤💜
Me 2. ❤🦋❤
I'm 65 and the only decade I've been alive that is worth reliving is the 80's...hands down winner.
Oh please. The 90s were next level
The bass player is killing it.
Three legends are in this video. Tony Franklin on bass is an absolute God
You forgot Stuart Elliott the drummer who played with top profile artists
The look Kate gives Gilmour at 3:46and at the drummer at 4:19it’s like, “yep, we’ve cracked this, it’s perfect” and it was😎
Patrick She didn't play often with Dave, but Stuart Elliott had been her drummer since 1978. Edit: August '77 actually, when the first album was recorded. Then all albums up to and including "Aerial" 2005.
Exactly! And see her smiling and looking so relaxed compared to how she was earlier on
The stranger things show brought me here. ❤️🔥❤️love the song . U Rock Kate Bush 7/5/22.
Tony Franklin tears it up on this version, he's a boss. Anything that has Kate and Gilmour together can't be bad.
I think it's charlie Morgan on drums.another killer player.he did the drums to the bill police TV programme....everyone knows the distinctive sound of the bill!

I really love this rock version of the song, it sounds amazing! Kate sounds great and she looks so happy, and David Gilmour is just doing his thing and he must feel like a proud dad thinking about how far she's come since they first met! The way they look at each other and smiles is so sweet. I'm so glad they did this, it's the only live performance of the song.
The most 80’s thing I’ve ever seen but in the best way possible
Tony franklin on bass ❤ just the best ❤ x
Love how you get to see the transformation of nervous Kate to confident Kate as she realizes how awesome the things around her are.
Christ almighty, I apologize for the language, but this is a fucking song, right here, this is what it's all about.
I think this version adds that rock element that was there but was under played. Now it has an edge and a good edge at that, a fantastic musical and vocal performance l thank Kate and David for this brilliant live version.
Tony is killing it! So refreshing to hear this version. Lovely.
Wow the only real live clip of the song out there, performed without backing. Its fucking incredible. Can someone please ask this woman to tour at least once lol? We need her
