You can turn off hold to right click within the pen settings. I knocks out a lot of jitter and gets rid of the delay nicely. Also, if you use a bit of line smoothing like I do with Leonardo. It feels very niiicccee.
Agreed. The default pen settings don't play very nice with drawing applications. Most drawing apps have smoothing options that help with the jitter problem and for the one's that don't there is Lazy Nezumi Pro, which will work with most Windows apps. (Not UWP apps, however.)
FINALLY. OH MY GOD. I've been watching this get reviewed by the major tech reviewers, and I kept saying THEY AREN'T REALLY EXPLORING THE BEST USE CASE: FOR ARTISTS. I've been waiting for youuuuuuu!!!
It would be SO nice if microsoft made an artists edition with a decent pen / digitiser. I love my surface pro 2017/5, but it can never be my main machine for work.
Could you explain why it wasnt good enough was it just the pressure levels? Also what fo you use now and would an ipad pro be considered good enough thanks
Had surface book 1 for the longest time, and honestly for me it's the power performance of having all adobe apps working side by side without having much hassle. The presentation is really cool when detaching the perfect 3x2 ratio screen to show off the photo you've created into others. The downside (besides the ridiculous price) is the error I get after having window's update.
Hi Brad, great review! I have a surface book 2, I've had it for a year and a half now, and it's a shame to see that what makes the laptop special (which basically is the ability to flip the screen and turn it into a wacom studio 16 pro) is still as it was on the previous model with no improvement on the jitter, the initial activation and the screen color gamut. They basically updated all the regular laptop parts and improved none of what could make the surface book the ideal artist device. I truly hope that microsoft is working on improving their ntrig tech. For what they are charging, it should be on the same level as the apple pencil or wacom EMR. Also: small tip but if you wear an artist glove the jitter gets reduced by a lot, or at least that's how it happens in my case. Also try adobe fresco on it, it has the best pen experience if you ask me.
I think my biggest problem was with the Pen when I got my Surface Book. Before I started using it to draw more often, the tip already broke after a few months of casual use.
Thanks for this comment. It's interesting to see how much more they could have done. I'm speaking as a SB2 owner, and I still kind of really regret buying it... (bought when it first released). Ever since buying my iPad pro 11 inch last month (which I never thought I'd buy any Apple products at all), I've never looked back since. Using Procreate to draw is just too damn good.
I also have the SB2, but find it difficult to draw with. For me, there's just too much of a delay between putting pen to screen and seeing my lines. I've gone back to regular sketch pads and regret the ridiculous spend for the 15" model with all of the bells. If I could go back, I'd spend that money on another Origin gaming laptop!
Do you know if its posible to use an other pen and resolver the delay in slow movements when drawing? Im looking for a pc and that's the only thing stoping me from buying it.
@@gerardomorales5478 look for tha Tablet Pro youtube channel, over there he recommends the Raphael 520 pen that is better calibrated for art and reduces the jitter and lag
Brad I got your Udemy course the other week! The zombie illustrator one. What I tried to learn in 6 months you made it practical in 2 hours.! Thanks so much. Hope it helped with getting a surface pro!
I've been watching Brad's review since his Tab S4 review. I'm genuinely impressed how quick his videos have improved since then, good job brad! Love your videos.
Hey Brad! I was wondering if you could make content of you just drawing. I really like your art style and would love to see it maybe livestreamed or just on a channel somewhere. I really enjoy your work and hope to see more!
I was really excited to get this until my friends convinced me to just build a PC and buy an ipad pro (refurbished) 2018 for LESS!?! I love the design of this thing but man am I glad I went the desktop, Ipad pro route.
I got the surface pro book when it first came out. Here is a con you might think about. If you use keyboard shortcuts while drawing, illustrating or modeling, this device is really difficult. If you’re drawing in laptop mode you’re not going to have a stable canvas. If you go to tablet the keyboard isn’t accessible. I had to set up another keyboard while in tablet. It isn’t bad for those quick edits, like you said.
Honestly, I think the hinge is more of a design aesthetic rather than a device limitation. It's a matter of preference, I like it. I think the hinge looks very cool, although not entirely practical.
With the hinge magic of the Surface Duo, I am looking forward to the next-generation redesign of the Surface Book and how they can take advantage of the learnings.
I’ve been waiting for this review!! I was looking into getting the first generation surface book since it’s half the price for a long time. Ik this isn’t a review of the first gen but this still sold me on it.
I really recommend you get the Surface Book 2. It has battery life improvements and more power. Also, the SB1 had some driver and display issues that may have been solved with the refresh.
Thanks Brad ! I can't wait getting mine next week :) I already had the 1 Performance Base and the 2d version, this time I took the 15" I wanted so much since the 2d version :) You pointed out evertyhing I thought you'd do ^^ In my case, the stylus still feels so great, I use it mainly on y SPX but I really love the feeling of it. I don't draw slowy so I don't have that much problem. What bothers me most is the fact that some of my favorite android/iOS app like Sketchbook has not the same render. It's less natural, more "digital" that's so disappointing :( But Clip Studio works great and I can't wait to use it on my 15" screen. But like you I may not recommend it for people who doesn't need both computer power + tablet form factor. As my main PC I need it to be powerfull but I also want to draw on it, use it to work, take notes,... And just like you Brad, I miss the kickstand :( I found on amazon a protective cover which add a kickstand to the tablet and let it be detachable. Is it yours or did you get one from MS ?

I have owned two separate Tablet PC computers. An Acer and a Fujitsu. ("Tablet PC" is a trademarked specification from Microsoft that called for the Wacom EMR stylus detection system.) And I now own a Surface Pro 4. The palm rejection on those Tablet PCs was flawless! I used them both while in University (as an older, returning student) to take notes on all day long. I was able to write in OneNote with the stylus then use my fingers to move or zoom the page then go back to writing as easily and naturally as if I were writing on paper. On the other hand, the palm rejection on my Surface Pro is a nightmare! It is so bad that I gave up using it for taking notes when I was in grad school. I kept losing my train of thought while fighting with the false inputs from my palm. ... Then I learned about drawing gloves! But too late. My latest is a Lenovo Yoga C940 15.6" I'm pretty happy with it. The palm rejection is really good. But not as perfect as my older Tablet PCs. And the handwriting fidelity is FAR better than my Surface Pro 4. Before I bought the Yoga, I tested ALL the Surface devices for the wavy diagonal line problem. I even brought in a plastic ruler and made sure to hold it with my non-drawing hand well away from the screen, just to make sure my hand wasn't shaking. Unless you are drawing REALLY fast, the lines are too wavy for anything but a casual sketch. There is a reason ALL Surface ads show people drawing with a really, ludicrously fat line. That's because it obscures the wavy line problem.
I have the SB2 15 inch with core i7 and Nvidia GPU....this machine is the best money can buy...MS didn't change anything in the SB3 aside from updated CPU, GPU because it's already perfect.
I got the OG Surface book, this old, used, laptop with an underpowered dGPU is the best laptop I have ever bought. I love the fact that nobody will ever know what surface book you have because they all look similar hahah.
very neutral and useful artists perspective review, you mentioned the better pen stabilization of clip studio paint, and even better you mention how surface pro may be better suited for artists because of form factor, less wobble cus the kickstand and i agree. also i think 12" is perfect size if you draw with the tablet on your arms. i want a surface pro 8 with X screen.
Great review, I can relate a lot to everything you covered! Coming from a surface laptop, I wanted to stick with the surface line cuz I too love their design, and also wanted a tablet option. This seems perfect and the pen seems good for note taking and some sketching. Thanks for the review!
i dont know why some reviewers hated this approach, i think its cool and neat, if they only have updated the design with thinner bezels, better stylus and pen functionality i think this will be a better. amd's apu on display with a great gpu and battery on keyboard, this will be a good combo. also microsoft should cut the price
I am a retoucher and CG artist. I would strongly urge avoiding this machine. I am about to receive my 6th - yes 6th - replacement device from Microsoft. They are fantastic computers when they work, but so far the longest one has gone without needing tech support and an eventual return is about 4 weeks. Touch and input died on one, bluetooth radio died in another, keyboard in one, speaker in another, and the hinge was super wobbly in another. If I could get my money back I would, in a heart beat. I've lost days of time dealing with support (who are great, just not the devices) and ended up buying something else to have something I can rely on for work. Posting here because your review was one of several that influenced my initial choice to buy.
Just like a Macbook - I look at this and think - wouldn't it be amazing if they had a accurate digitiser with pressure sensitivity and no wobble in there... Why won't the universe listen to me?
Your great reviews lead me to purchase a MS Surface Pro 7 to draw in Clip Studio. Now, i just need to learn to draw. Thank you for your amazing reviews!
I have the SP7 and Clip Studio is my go-to art program because of the amazing line stabilization like you mentioned. I am curious though if you have considered doing a review on the Raphael 5 pen? Or their newer one, the Raphael 520? I'm currently using the Raphael 5 pen and I'm mostly curious to know your thoughts on it.
I just so love it .. I have a mac book pro 16 from office .. but this is just so awesome .. surface dial arc mouse and pen .. eventually what i got is amazing user experience
They new background: Everything is balanced just like it should be Good blur but not too dark. And review is as always great but I want a unboxing also on your mini channel. Also are you planing to review the new Huion Kamvas Pro 24 Or/and the Xp-Pen that is coming this month may 29th. Thanks
Your review is spot on. I had the book 2 for several years (accidentally busted the power button a year ago and I'm still kicking myself about it). It worked fabulously for literally everything, the only issues were the occasional pen jitter and awkward drawing angle when in laptop mode. Not a big deal 99% of the time, but i am trying to become a professional illustrator, so that 1% was becoming a pressing issue. Do you know of any excellent laptops that also provide a lovely drawing experience?
I've been using a Surface Book 2 for over 2 years now and while I'm really happy with the amount of horsepower it can put out, it's kind of a hassle when I have it docked and have to flip the screen around when I want to draw something in a pinch. I'd have to remove the USB-C dock before detaching the screen and then plug it back in after reattaching the screen else the dock wouldn't be recognized. I'm not sure if this is still and issue on the SB3 but I'm planning to pair a Surface Pro 7 alongside a chunky gaming laptop soon. Also, the CPU fan on my SB2 is dead so I'm basically running it fanless with lots of thermal throttling.
I'm learning programming and web design. I'm a gamer. I'm wanting to start making videos and editing videos. I want to get back into photo editing. I need better battery life than my current Dell G5 laptop. I'm highly contemplating spending the outrageous amount of money to get this laptop.
For some strange reason, it looks like they updated the pen. I also ordered a new pen with the SB3. For some reason, the new pen makes nearly no jitter on my old SB2 compared to my old pen - Both pens look 100% identical. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I haven't tested the new pen on the SB3 yet. Sadly, the SB3 hasn't arrived until now.
@@Raiken86 I use a SP6 on a daily basis and I also got a pen a few months back. Sometimes there's absolutely no jitter and it works amazing, and sometimes it creates these ugly lines. I really don't see what the problem is
I bought the SB3 15" Core i7 several weeks ago and the Surface Pen is Phenomenal!!! I had a Surface Pro 3 & 4 and the original SB1 and this blows them all away. I don't know what this guys problem is but my Pen is flawless! Perhaps because of the Invidia 1660 GPU, either way it's great.
Thanks for the very comprehensive review Brad! I love the more laptop form factor so the Surface Book line stood out to me. I'll be keeping my eye on this line! Also have you thought about reviewing the Samsung Galaxy Book Flex? I'd love to see more 2-in1s on this channel along with graphic devices
I am using SB2 in the architectural field, and it was almost perfect, enough power to do cad and ps, and the pen for marking up drawings and comments, just great, but the CPU sometimes just gets too hot. I was hoping SB3 would add a stand to the screen, and MS to sell a type cover for it, so it could be more portable when i need it to me, and just leave the base at home, without a keyboard, windows 10 is still pretty bad.
I do not get this narrative that MPP's palm rejection is better than Wacom EMR. I had the Surface Pro 5 & Samsung Galaxy Book 12 simultaneously and had no issues with vectoring or palm rejection on the Samsung....😑 In fact i would be more likely to say the reverse
surface book doesnt have Thunderbolt port because the PCIE Lanes is not capable to handle any ports anymore. There is too many for motherboard to serve.
Thunderbolt makes no sense besides 10GB Ethernet. The Books CPU can't feed an eGPU accordingly and it will throttle under full load anyway to protect also the batteries from getting to warm...
Only reason I do not agree with you when you said the surface pro was better is because the surface pro can't run adobe photoshop or adobe animate apparently. If this Surface book 3 can run these programs then it might be better off in the long run? who knows.
"If you're an illustrator who wants a primary art-machine, I'm not sure this is the one." Do you have a laptop that you'd recommend as a "primary art-machine"? I like the idea of this one where the screen can be removed to be a tablet, but the laggy pen interface is a deal-breaker for my illustration work.
Such a shame the Pen/Stylus does not work with the Surface Headphones -- came to this Video for exactly that! But received plenty other reasons to watch until the end. 😜 My take from your Reviews so far: get the Book 3 for Programming, Video Editing and some Gaming (as extras). Otherwise, stick with Pro 7 for compact Writing, Drawing and Photo Editing. Is this fair? Cheers!
Do you think you could do a review on other 2 in 1 laptop brands that can use pens? Like lenovo and hp?I love Microsoft but I wish some of the devices were cheaper , I wonder if those other brands work well
Really fun, informed and engaging content. Have you ever tried to use Table Pro on surface products to avoid having to use a keyboard? Don’t suppose you’ve done a review?
wouldn't be easy and better make a foldable laptop or something similar to "Acer Conceptd 7 Ezel Pro" or something? (Cool laptop by the way. review in a future?) :D
Just letting you know it isn't magnesium, it is a magnesium aluminium alloy. Magnesium or Aluminium on their own are really bad for structure but add them together and a few drops of dragon's blood. Bass bing bada boom. P.s I really enjoy your content.
Hey Brad nice review! I use tech for business/productivity & I take notes, write on documents etc. on a daily basis. I'm thinking of going paperless so my question is if I could have only one device is this my best choice? (I only have experience with windows/android devices)
It’s a security measure right the company that aggressively markets a proprietary dock connectors says thrundwebolt is insecure How. Much is that surface connector to usb-c adapter 100 dollars ok
N-Trig is what holds me back from buying Surface devices. The hardware looks sexy, though! I remember when the first Surface Studio came out and thought to myself "That's how iMac should've been!". Microsoft design team should get a raise.
Super disappointed. Mine was very buggy. Didn’t connect with the Surface Dock 2. Couldn’t even connect wirelessly with my TV, which my SB2 does flawlessly. I’m gonna wait for the surface book 4. I really love the concept and love my SB2.
I wonder if Linux would have a problem randomly losing the dedicated GPU upon removing the base or not, unless it treats it the same as a hybrid laptop then it should work without issues.
intel still owns the thunderbolt branding and if u need certifications for amd lets say, intel needs to approve it. I think the are w8ing for usb4 to come out so that intel wouldn't be the controller for It rather it be a standard port. but it still seems fishy about not putting the port with an intel cpu
Hi brad! what if we combine Surface Slim Pen 2 with Surface Book 3? does drawing or sketching become more smoothly or it doesn't changes much? and by the way,you are a Gifted storyteller in your videos..

The hinge closes at an angle to keep your finger grease from making gross marks on the screen. It's on purpose.
The hinge is placed there to aide with tilting the tablet when it is detached and turned around then reattached. Always helps with drawing a bit.

Your great reviews lead me to purchase a MS Surface Pro 7 to draw in Clip Studio. Now, i just need to learn to draw. Thank you for your amazing reviews!
Why didn't you go with the iPad and procreate?
I have the SP7 and Clip Studio is my go-to art program because of the amazing line stabilization like you mentioned. I am curious though if you have considered doing a review on the Raphael 5 pen? Or their newer one, the Raphael 520? I'm currently using the Raphael 5 pen and I'm mostly curious to know your thoughts on it.
I just so love it .. I have a mac book pro 16 from office .. but this is just so awesome .. surface dial arc mouse and pen .. eventually what i got is amazing user experience
5:17 the surface pro type cover does have a light up keyboard
They new background:
Everything is balanced just like it should be
Good blur but not too dark.
And review is as always great but I want a unboxing also on your mini channel.
Also are you planing to review the new Huion Kamvas Pro 24
Or/and the Xp-Pen that is coming this month may 29th.
Thanks
YAY more content! I love your videos Brad! Thank you for being a UA-camr!!
Microsoft is doing its thing. Can’t deny how useful this device can be for artist.
I'm learning programming and web design. I'm a gamer. I'm wanting to start making videos and editing videos. I want to get back into photo editing. I need better battery life than my current Dell G5 laptop. I'm highly contemplating spending the outrageous amount of money to get this laptop.
just improve the freaking pen microsoft...
For some strange reason, it looks like they updated the pen.
I also ordered a new pen with the SB3. For some reason, the new pen makes nearly no jitter on my old SB2 compared to my old pen - Both pens look 100% identical. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I haven't tested the new pen on the SB3 yet. Sadly, the SB3 hasn't arrived until now.
@@Raiken86 I use a SP6 on a daily basis and I also got a pen a few months back. Sometimes there's absolutely no jitter and it works amazing, and sometimes it creates these ugly lines. I really don't see what the problem is
@@Raiken86 do you mind posting a video showing the lack of jitter? if its really fixed in the new pen I might pull the trigger on a new one...
I bought the SB3 15" Core i7 several weeks ago and the Surface Pen is Phenomenal!!! I had a Surface Pro 3 & 4 and the original SB1 and this blows them all away. I don't know what this guys problem is but my Pen is flawless! Perhaps because of the Invidia 1660 GPU, either way it's great.
just go back to Wacom EMR
Very nice review . the only bad thing about the surface line is the Pen if only they could improve it a little more the surface book will be perfect .
This information is very helpful for me. For the drawing app, I will probably go with an iPad this time, as much as I like the Surface..
I'm confused. Other people said they can open the SB3 with one hand just like the SB2.
Hinge-gap can be bridged by watchband hinge like Lenovo Yoga had.
surface pro keyboard is backlit btw 5:19
I have a Surface Pro 4 and a spare power supply that I bought recently. That USB charger port on the power supply brick is seriously underpowered.
Thunderbolt makes no sense besides 10GB Ethernet. The Books CPU can't feed an eGPU accordingly and it will throttle under full load anyway to protect also the batteries from getting to warm...
you should do a video of the surface dial
Only reason I do not agree with you when you said the surface pro was better is because the surface pro can't run adobe photoshop or adobe animate apparently. If this Surface book 3 can run these programs then it might be better off in the long run? who knows.
7:50 Balm, Calm are two words I can think of without research that rhyme with Palm.
Finally, someone who answered my question about the S Pen and the headphones... 😉
I miss your cartoon characters. But great review as always
Anybody tested the Surface Slim Pen 2 with the Surface Book 3? Does it fix the pen jittering?
the surface pro 7's keyboard is back lit
Getting mine next week...can't wait!!
Would you please tell your experience with it?
The long press can be disabled. It's a must imo.
Can you please review dell xps 13 or 15 2 in 1 for drawing.
My take from your Reviews so far: get the Book 3 for Programming, Video Editing and some Gaming (as extras). Otherwise, stick with Pro 7 for compact Writing, Drawing and Photo Editing. Is this fair?
Cheers!
Thank you somuch for the thorough videos Brad! Since you don't think this laptop is good for illustrators, what laptop would you suggest then?
I believe the gap is to avoid fingerprints on the screen. As a MacBook user, I always have outlines of my keyboard on the screen. :(
Do you think you could do a review on other 2 in 1 laptop brands that can use pens? Like lenovo and hp?I love Microsoft but I wish some of the devices were cheaper , I wonder if those other brands work well
Really fun, informed and engaging content. Have you ever tried to use Table Pro on surface products to avoid having to use a keyboard? Don’t suppose you’ve done a review?
Almost perfect but it doesn’t seem to have the number keyboard integrated which for me is mandatory 😿 very nice btw!
wouldn't be easy and better make a foldable laptop or something similar to "Acer Conceptd 7 Ezel Pro" or something? (Cool laptop by the way. review in a future?) :D
Just letting you know it isn't magnesium, it is a magnesium aluminium alloy.
Magnesium or Aluminium on their own are really bad for structure but add them together and a few drops of dragon's blood.
Bass bing bada boom.
P.s I really enjoy your content.
Hey Brad nice review! I use tech for business/productivity & I take notes, write on documents etc. on a daily basis. I'm thinking of going paperless so my question is if I could have only one device is this my best choice? (I only have experience with windows/android devices)
Lenovo flex 14 amd review when 👀
You can disable the long press function in control panel.
It’s a security measure right the company that aggressively markets a proprietary dock connectors says thrundwebolt is insecure How. Much is that surface connector to usb-c adapter 100 dollars ok
I had been waiting for this review even though , I can't get it
Very good review Brad
N-Trig is what holds me back from buying Surface devices. The hardware looks sexy, though! I remember when the first Surface Studio came out and thought to myself "That's how iMac should've been!". Microsoft design team should get a raise.
All it's missing is the Wacom quality pen!.... Everything else makes it the perfect indie dev travel buddy.
Hi Brad, will you be looking at the Raphael 520, XP-Pen Surface Pen and the XP-Pen Artist Display 24 Pro? Keep up the good work!
Doesn't it just mean other manufacturers sacrifice/risk security for Thunderbolt? Can anyone clarify?
Super disappointed. Mine was very buggy. Didn’t connect with the Surface Dock 2. Couldn’t even connect wirelessly with my TV, which my SB2 does flawlessly. I’m gonna wait for the surface book 4. I really love the concept and love my SB2.
Watching this video with the surface book 2 makes me cry
I wonder if Linux would have a problem randomly losing the dedicated GPU upon removing the base or not, unless it treats it the same as a hybrid laptop then it should work without issues.
ayy nice! new camera lookin good!
Is it still worth it to buy this laptop this year?
intel still owns the thunderbolt branding and if u need certifications for amd lets say, intel needs to approve it.
Great review. I love Surface Book
Great video! Very helpful.
I’ve had the surface pro 4 for so long and I think it’s time for an upgrade
