Love the review! I'm a computer engineer, I bought it for:
    1) Tall aspect ratio to see more code and documents
    2) 1080p webcams and dual mics are a must in 2020. 720p shitcams on most laptops don't allow me to show my circuits and diagrams to my coworkers. Main reason why the Dell XPS and others were struck out.
    3) Pen input for notes and drawings.
    4) No bloat whatsoever
    5) Up to twice as much battery compared to Surface Pro
    6) Awesome keyboard
    7) Tablet mode for personal media use, on a bed or the train to work.
The only things I do not like are the bezels and the speakers.

@@teachervictor7645 I don't do video editing but it should do just fine; it has a fast NVME SSD, LPDDR4 RAM and 10th gen CPU. The variant with the i7 should be the best option for video editing. Pair with a Surface Dial or Pen for some smooth timeline scrolling. That said, if you only do video editing maybe the Book 3 is not the best option?

Victor Chiang someone’s review did 6k video footage and it was fine. Just remember instead of paying for great specs you are paying for the form factor. If you will use it and don’t mind windows do not hesitate twice about it. Pulse get a good warranty just in case.

I feel like complaints about a three year old design would carry more weight if it didn’t come from someone who owns a MacBook Pro. Apple usually keeps the design for 4 Years before slapping in apple the successful force touch trackpad, unwanted Touch Bar, forcing thunderbolt down our throats or breaking the keyboard for generations. Change isn’t always good. Refining a unique product is also a valid path. I agree that the Surface Book 3 isn’t a Macbook. Because it’s not trying to be one. It’s also not a gaming laptop. It’s a 2 in 1 with pen support, a powerful graphics card, great battery life and a good keyboard. I’ve seen the surface book get a lot of love from engineers, 3d artists, programmers and data scientists. They use the touch screen to make notes and write math/physics equations with specialized symbols, for them WSL 2’s GPU support is a dream come through for Machine Learning/Deep Learning as they won’t have to dual boot Linux anymore, it’s also powerful enough for their 3d models, it has both usb-a and usb-c which convenient for college students and people who live in the real world. A reliable keyboard for hours of coding or writing papers. Having the option to write with the pen if you get tired of typing. The list goes on.

I’m a software engineer so I got one because of the awesome keyboard (which I love), screen aspect ratio, and gpu computing for AI/Machine Learning stuff. I really like the convertible design as I also like to a draw vector art and love playing with sketchable. I use a lot of that for making PowerPoint presentations more interesting. The angle of the screen when you flip it around for drawing is very comfortable.
So overall, the many aspects I get out of this one device makes for a nice compact design. This a smartphone, and a good pair of headphones are all the tech I need to do all the work and play things I want to do. So it really appeals to my minimalist mentality of reducing stuff and distractions. I can say I really am very happy with the purchase.

I've owned a Surface Book 2 since that version came out, over three years now. It's been and continues to be the absolute best laptop I've ever owned. Co-workers with comparable Dell XPS and Macbook's have all had hardware issues with batteries, keyboards, and general reliability issues. But my Surface Book keeps going 100%. I travel a lot with it and it's seen many many planes and car road trips for work. I've dropped it twice from standing height and nothing happened to it. Luggage was dropped on it also which dented the cover side of the screen, but aside from the dent in the metal case, nothing happened to the internals. It feels premium against any competitor. Reviewers complaining that the outside is unchanged, what needs to be changed? It's still nicer in appearance than anything else out there (aside from Apple laptops if you like those) and it's build quality is as good or better than anything else. And those who complain about the gap when it's closed, it has no affect on anything. So what? I never get stuff stuck in it because of this and I jam all sorts of things in my laptop bag when I travel. The only reason I'm not buying the Surface Book 3 is because there is nothing wrong with my SB 2. If you want a premium Windows laptop this is the one to buy. Don't even consider other "premium" laptops. It the difference between buying a Mercedes or a Buick.

Basically, this is all the use cases you described which are niche. A pure PC gamer that never do something else, and does not care about a better screen ratio for productivity, a productive guy who never need to sign or annotate anything, a PC user that does not need or want a tablet ( I would say that probably 95% of western world household have a tablet), or a photo editor / designer that would not benefit from a pen for masking or fine selection...
All kind of usage benefit from a mix of input method, mix of form factor and bettet screen ratio than 16:9 just good for movies.
This is where this device excels. It does all. Maybe not better that very niche tasks compared to very niche hardware but for most of the task it does it as well or even better than others where you face irremedialy one constraint or the other

I read this review and was partly influenced by it to purchase the Surface Book 3, 13.5” for almost $2K with tax. I am upset about my purchase and here's my complaint, and you should know about if you are thinking of buying any expensive computer from MS:
It's out of warranty for the last six months. My computer looks fine. I do not believe it has suffered any trauma. But it has stopped functioning. $2K down the drain. -That is a lot of money. Best Buy said I needed to go to MS. Neither will repair it. I contacted Microsoft Support and also went to the Microsoft Store on Fifth Avenue.
The computer is two-part: a tablet and a keypad/touchpad with second battery (the "base"). The tablet, which has the mother board, chipset, screen and works independently of the base works perfectly, still. Only the base is broken: the touchpad does not work, and the lights on the keyboard do not come on. The base has much less of the technology in it -which is why it works as a tablet without it.
At the Microsoft Store, a nice man looked at my computer, ran it through a very simple troubleshooting function on the computer itself, through 'settings.' It took five minutes. He told me it was not a software problem, so he could not help me. Really, end of story -at Microsoft.
I asked how they could repair it quickly, so that I'd be up and running again. The associate and a manager told me that they could NOT REPAIR it -at all. Instead, I was given the option of turning in my computer and paying $599 (plus tax) for a refurbished replacement with a 90 day warranty.
Let's consider this -I think it's an outrageous scam. Not only do they refuse to repair their expensive product, or "stand behind it," which is less than two years old, but in order to get a refurbished (used) replacement, I must also tender over my partly broken computer. How much is mine worth? After all the tablet still functions. I am sure they will repair the base easily -they will, in fact, do for themselves what they will not do for me, their customer. They will then re-sell my computer as "refurbished" to the next customer. So my cost to have a functioning computer, after having purchased one for about $2K, is $599, plus tax, plus the value of my old computer -which, even discounted for age, I would put at $800 conservatively. So, my cost to correct the problem is actually $599 + tax + $800. That is insanely unreasonable.
I assumed Microsoft would provide support -at least- equal to other computer companies, for example, Dell, HP, Lenovo and, especially, Apple. Each of these companies has computers that, when a part breaks, it can be changed out and repaired with a replacement part -after all keyboards and touchpads are simple discrete parts. I have had Dell, Lenovo and Apple. With the first two, you can go to an authorized repair company and they will replace the part -touchpad, keyboard or even harddrive. Apple goes even further and their customer service at the 'Genius Bar,' really no matter how old your computer or phone is. Sometimes they even give a 'loaner.'
But Microsoft, in fact, does just the opposite. The company wants my computer to be obsolete as early as possible. After all, my computer was out of warranty only six months. And it is not the case I expected something for free. But neither did I expect MS to try to squeeze me for as much money as they possibly could. So, apparently, there is no reasonable repair for my computer -unless I can find an 'unauthorized' repair shop that can get it working!

I would like the battery to last a little longer on the tablet by itself though. So I say if you plan on using it in tablet mode a long time maybe your best bet is an ipad. Good review, but I don't really think loud speakers are a big deal unless you are doing lots of presentations. I listen to my SB2 all the time and I never turn it all the way up. For that matter my Surface Go is also good enough to listen to podcasts, news and UA-cam videos. Yes MacBooks sound better, but the SB speakers have better sound quality than almost all other laptops.
I bought a MacBook 16" (and run Windows on it) because of the power and because I found a good dock, but if my SB2 didn't thermal throttle, I would probably be using it right now . Thermal throttling is the biggest drawback to the Surface Book, IMO. The ability to pick up your laptop by disconnecting a single magnetic connector is fantastic. Having all your "stuff" on one device is the goal of the SB lineup.
You should do the SB3 review with the dock. Bear in mind that many potential users will have two docks - one at home and one at the office.

  • @Arneallan

I bought it when it came in 2017 (15"), back then it had better specs compared to other laptops than this generation. I think youtube reviews are skewed the wrong way, they only see it from two perspectives. 1. Video / Photo editing. 2. Gaming. I'm a programmer so 3:2 screen is awesome for that. But then I also like to draw digitally and that's where it got interesting for me. A wacom screen tablet costs a good bit of money, so getting a good pen input, maybe not as good as a high end wacom but still very good, "saved" me money. I just flip the screen around and I can draw on it as well as a Cintiq. And then I could game on occasion also with a 1060 inside. Never felt that the CPU was limiting my use. So don't forget about digital artists perspective.

Its 2023, November, and I am still enamoured with the Surface Book 3. As a senior engineer, the Surface Book 3 has been my constant companion for work, allowing me to take notes on One Note, run engineering software, and allow me to edit photos and videos taken from my drone and photogrammetry equipment. I' came to the SB3 from a Surface Pro 3, wanted something with a lot more oomph, and also with the ability to write on. The SB3 does it all and I think its one of those devices where the its more than just the sum of its parts. Yes, it does not do anything really well, but it does most things well enough, and it does one thing significantly well, flexibility in usage.

  • @hazemzorkot
    @hazemzorkot 3 роки тому +1

The surface book 3 is a great device in my opinion. I bought it because:
    1. It’s unique and stands out from the crowd.
    2. The 2 in 1 design is amazing, and that is the main reason why I bought it.
    3. This is very flexible, versatile and it ticks all my boxes of both productivity, connectivity and flexibility.
    4. It has probably the best speakers i have yet had (no, seriously).
    5. The bezels are perfectly sized to grip the tablet.
So that’s why I bought the surface book 3. Also, the cpu performance is amazing, and there is a setting in windows where you can adjust the max cpu performance. When you directly buy it and you leave it unchanged, it sometimes does around 86% of its max performance as it is set at that for most models.

I use it for Graphic Design work and video editing, (with Adobe suite) and audio recording with Presonus Studio One and have no issues at all. When compared to Dell XPS 13 for example, it's a no brainier for me. To get touch on XPS and 32 GB ram, is $2600, SB3 is $2500 plus an additional 10% off. XPS also does not offer dedicated GPU in any configuration. I use the 2 in 1 design to show sketches to clients that I made with the pen, the form factor quickly allows me to display my work, I can lay it flat to make sketch updates on the fly, and then back to a laptop for work. I rarely use it as a tablet, mostly to swap screen back and forth. But I want something I can sketch on without carrying around additional tablet. For creatives, it really is tough to beat. As a general use laptop, there are better buys out there. All depends on how you want/need to use it.

i still hesitate to take one. i need a laptop (and not an ipad, a x86 PC), but i also want a pen to take notes on the go. the surface pro is a no go for me, and taking notes on a non detachable screen isn't great at all. plus, i already have a powerful PC "tower" at home, so i don't need much graphical power on the laptop. this device is interesting because the tablet mode is very cool, screen can flip side for notes, design is slick, i don't really care about speakers since i wear headphones all the time, the battery is great..., but yeah i still don't know, the price is high..

I bought a SurfaceBook 2 for $50. No issues with it whatsoever. The previous owner had recently upgraded to a different computer and was basically just trying to get rid of it. I had been watching different UA-cam videos about them and really just wanted to check one out just for curiousity. I found this one and figured why not and if I don't like it, just resale it but, so far, I'm actualy loving it. It won't be replacing my iPad Pro anytime soon but to just change things up every so often I like it.

I have a SurfaceBook 1 and I love it. Yes, the premier wouldn't work that well when editing video, but I mainly got it for school. A laptop when I want it or a big slate to draw or take notes (One Note). Many people don't know this, but you can do tablet mode with a base/stand by just reversing the base. It does wonders and it rests well with your wrists plus the added battery life. Drawing on the regular touchscreen laptops just is not comfortable. Surface pen>apple pen

This laptop is perfect for people who need a computer that can do most things good. Well.. not ridiculously fast, but just good and sometimes great.
I'm a freelancer and I write articles, graphic design, edit videos, sketch/illustrate stuff, manage social media, design websites and SB does it all good.
With this laptop I don't have to buy a separate PC, laptop and tablet (let's say a $1,000 PC, $500 graphic tablet, $1,500 MBP and a $1,000 iPad which would've cost me more than my $2,5K SB3 model).
Bezel is actually good if you're actually using it as tablet. Well, you want something to grip on.

To me they both have nice screens and can handle quite heavy word documents (with lots of review tracks) and a lot of chrome tabs as I need to cross reference a lot. To me they don't feel that different with each other save for the OS. I prefer the Presentation by Mac and Word by Windows. Touch screen is non essential to me.

But if you are someone who do a lot of work online and spent a lot of time on internet. This is for you. I play a lots of game, do a lots of home work, and also detachable screen from keyboard is AMAZING for taking not if you have pen of course. All my family own apple macbook and some is over price than this. But is get hot super quick. I am glad that I pick this laptop. This macbook fan boy reviewer kept comparing a clamshell laptop to a surface book. How ridiculous!
To answer your question, why would anyone buy the surface book today ? I am an owner of a 13.5 inch SB3
Answer : Name me a 13 inch laptop that can detach as a tablet , support stylus pen for taking meeting notes , with dedicated graphics gtx 1650 maxQ for moderate gaming, quiet fans and office productivity battery life of 7-8 hours, supports PD USB C charging via a portable power bank during flights, excellent keyboard and trackpad in a 2in1 device ?
None... You need to buy 3 device ( tablet with pen support , clamshell ultrabook , entry level gaming desktop or laptop ) to accomplish what surface book 3 offers. No doubt , each of those dedicated product will outperform the sB3 from the technical performance viewpoints but not everyone wants to own and manage so many devices.
Hence, most people buy a surface book because they understand how to leverage the full potential of a single device.
    You don't compare a standalone iPad/ultrabook /gaming laptop to the SB3.
You obviously doesn't understand the design and use case concept of surface book

Which windows tablet is better than the SB3 tablet (portion) and offers pen support? Throttling issues all the time. In reality it does not work better than the 2014 MacBook Pro it replaced. I wasted 3000EUR on this thing. Do not know who this device if for if the "powerful" hardware just doesn't deliver anything. Also, Premier pro says that the video card is no longer supported.

I'm going to purchase the Microsoft Surface Book 3; I actually agree with all your points in this video; but I didn't like any of the other alternatives, above the functionality of detaching the screen; yes, I may do some video editing, but I do that on my main laptop, the Predator 17 (I know this is 4 years old now, but still fast and it's i7); I have the Surface Book when it first came out, and while I love this unit, the fact I can't have the battery replaced (Battery #1 not present shows up too much for my comfort); I know my Surface Book is on its way out; while I have the cash, I'm gonna take another chance with Microsoft; Lord will, this will be not LAST laptop; the Surface Book 3 will serve as a backup computer should Predator 17 goes on the blink; actually, in the last 6 months, I've repaired my Predator 17 on a number of issues; so the Surface Book 3 is a gift (and last) to myself. I love the detachment and the idea of surfing the net in my med, or while I'm on the road; I have a kid in the church I pastor who uses my Surface Book now, but for a 12-year-old, the Surface Book 3 will be just fine; this will keep him outta trouble while at church and under my watchful eye;'
My only concern is the life of the battery; I'm thinking, my Surface Book's batteries didn't get a lot of working out since it was my second laptop (also, my Bible, theological software library) probably was used on an average of 15 hours a week; on my church meetings, my Surface Book was primary in all my meetings; the Surface Book 3 will probably get about 40 hours as I'll use it primarily (at home) for research, etc. Thanks for your video; great job!! When the Surface lineup (i.e. Surface Pro & Surface Book) launched around 5-6 years ago, they were really innovations.
Customers like me were eager to pay a premium for the surface products.
In 2020, surface products are still giving the same design, just some improvements in hardware.
*AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, THEY CHARGED MORE!!!*
The latest surface pro base model is still giving i3, 4GB RAM, 128GB Storage, and *the SURFACE KEYBOARD and PEN ARE SOLD SEPARATELY*
C'Mon Microsoft.... it's 2020 now..... look at the market out there...
And Surface Products are always having some userability issues (like battery expansion, sleep & hibernate wake-up problems, bad CS after sales)
I will NOT buy any surface products again unless they really change something BIG!!

´What competition are you talking about.
You're hopefully not referring oranges to apples.
as it get stupider then you are allowed to be when you bitxhing about bezels and then showing bezels on a normal laptop like something like that could ever be the case on SB. 1:53
you try to hold a heavy 13.5" 700g tablet with no bezels... even on my Ipad Pro 12.9 2020 I would prefer more bezels... on laptops and small mobiles Im okay with no beze3ls but on big tablets.. bezels are nice and needed unless you wanna fumble with a lot of screentouches..
big almost 14" tablets that are big hence 3:2 ratio.. you want bezels... please don't compare a tablet to a laptop.
people wanting Books are likely going for that detachable feature, as having a huge 7mm thin 13.½ " Ipad pro-like tablet in windows clothing with all the programs and games you can run. is god damn nice, not least if Android 11 will support android app, as then thrse huge stand along tablet really become a joy... not least with Xbox cloud that and the ablelity to just have that screen.
we got 3 books here, 2x Porsche Books and 1 X SB2 with dGPU, and no contest, the build on the Porsche is above my SB2, and I miss sockets on the SB2 unit itself.. I got it in the base with TypeC and USB3 etc, but on the Porsche, I got thunderbolt3 on the tablet itself, microSD, 2xUSB3 + another TypeC on base + wacom 4096 stulys..
This is a detachable unit, nothing comes close to this, and best of both worlds... full fledge laptop and full-fledged tablet that are 7mm thinn.. these 360" are never gonna be this good, as it is not comfortable to use them as a tablet having all the keyboard dangling underneath that aint nice to keep bumping against keys etc.. on the Porsche Books those can flip 360 + also being detacheable.... its the detachable that is the main feature.(remember that)
and having a fanless 13.½" windows tablet that doesn't have any fan noise and performing 1700 in Cine20.. ain't too shabby.
also tried gaming latops.. but really don't like gaming on laptops as an adult.. a big OLED screen for that immersive feeling ... small screens on laptops,, don't like that when gaming, the bigger the screen the better for an immersive effect.

sadly you have made linking prohibited so one cant link anymore if you want your comment to no be removed by this YT botfilter channelholder have activated.
but one can least find my scores on geekbench under the username Laniakea
I highly doubt that is an legit score in Cine20.. and Intel gen11 should only give 1258 when Im on 8gen 13.5" are getting 1700. "fanless"

Just checked the Notebookcheck review, and yes they were also getting a shockingly low score in Cine20 with only 1089 score on SB3 13.5 i7 1065..
the system is being hamstring when you have in mind the SB2 is in 1700 score in Cine20 and just uncer 800 in Cine15.
and that doesnt make sense that my fanless SB2 with i8650 COU that are passive cooled, only the base dGPU has a fan are getting 1700 score in Cine20 and the new SB3 with i7 1065 and CPU fans, are only getting around 1100.. it should at least be around the 8gen and likely also faster now that is seems to have fan colling the CPU.

My take on this laptop is that no one should buy it for specific tasks such as gaming or content creation. Only buy it if you know nothing about games BG specs and photo editing, and you just like the 2-in-1 idea.
