Phil Collins didn't have to go that hard on the songs but he did and every single song is a masterpiece. This is to me what Frozen soundtrack is to today's kids.
Also amazing how he sang them in multiple languages! My friends and I still remember the (non-English) lyrics, and I feel like his slight accent made them stand out compared to all the other Disney songs in a way that made them unique
I completely forgot they spent the first bit establishing that Tarzan became great at mimicking sounds to survive and thrive. That's why he picks up language so fast. I love it
So while everyone talks about how hard Phil Collins goes on this movie, let's also give a shoutout to Mark Mancina, who also went hard on the soundtrack, and often goes unnoticed because a lot of people think Phil did all the score when he only wrote the lyrics and sang the songs.

I really love this movie. I love seeing his early years, growing up with the gorillas, and his relationship with his Kala, Tarzan and Jane have such beautiful, believable romance, and Clayton is one of Disney's most threatening villains with one of the most memorable villain deaths.
90’s Disney had amazing animated movies, but this one holds a very special place in my heart for how amazing the characters are and the animation is still amazing to watch even to this year. The music. The action scenes. And Clayton being one of the best villain of the 90’s.
Tarzan and Mulan were my most watched among my VHS tapes as a kid. The music is like a whole character in this movie, I LOVED it. Watching it hits different when you have a kid of your own tho damn 🥲
It was Tarzan and Hercules for me. Lion King being an honorable mention. Really the 90s (and 2000 for Dinosaur) truly was the modern golden age for Disney.
John Clayton and Shan-Yu from Mulan, are top tier Disney villans. This entire soundtrack is a masterpiece and it blends so well with every "phase" of Tarzan's life that it makes everything so much powerfull. I'm on my 30s now and I still cry to this, seriously.
you’re totally right. i guess they were grieving in very different ways. kala found another baby to take care of, kerchak became more protective over their pack.
This Tarzan yell was so good that when I heard the "classic" Tarzan yell later on, it just didn't match up for me. Even though that was the original one, this one was so good that the older one felt inferior
This is one of my favorite Disney movies ever! Tarzan used to be on replay all the time when I was a kid, with me bumping the Phil Collins soundtrack every chance I got. Now I get to see one of my favorite reaction channels watch it for the first time! Way to go, John!
John catches up on classic movies he missed is legitimately one of my favourite set of videos to watch. You're really able to enjoy them just as much as if you had seen them as a kid.
The film was given a special Oscar for it’s depth vine layer animation and Tony Hawk with other skateboarders were used for reference footage for Tarzan tree surfing. Also Phil Collins won the Oscar for Best Original Song for You’ll be in my Heart and this upset Trey Park and Matt Stone for Blame Canada as they said they would be fine losing to anyone, but not Phil Collins and they made fun of him in the show.
There isn’t a better way to spend my sick day than watching a Tarzan reaction. There are few that haven’t seen it, it’s one of the most well known Disney classics and also my favorite. Everything from the story to the music to the animation is beautiful. This is going to be fun. 😄
Fun fact (not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet) the guy that voiced Clayton did the iconic Tarzan yell for this movie because the guy that voiced Tarzan blew out his vocal cords.
I've seen this movie *countless* times, but it's only just occurred to me! Tarzan is *crazy* focused on the gunshot he hears at 16:20. Maybe he remembers it from when his parents were killed? The looks he's giving here is pretty intense. Back in the treehouse when he was a baby, there's a quiet gunshot effect as Kala walks over the gun, and it sounds near identical.
Tony Goldwyn voicing him brought that elegance and Grace and it's thanks to his voice. Of course Michael T. Weiss from the Pretender franchise took over for the animated Tarzan tv Show. Glenn Close and Lance Henriksen as John Clayton's/Tarzans foster parents and that yearning for a family gives you the feels.
this movie is bitter sweet to me. my parents used to call me tarzan as a kid cuz i loved being outside in nature and this is my absolute favorite disney movie of all time. later in life me and my baby mama used to call eachother tarzan and jane as terms of endearment
I haven't seen this movie in probably 20 years. Was misty eyed pretty much the entire time...I didn't realize how much it affected me Great reaction, John!
In the books, the leopard is a lioness, but they made her a leopard in this movie because it made more sense for the jungle. Also, Clayton and Tarzan are cousins in the books, and you can see a slight resemblance in their movie designs.
I can't count the amount of times I've watched Tarzan as a child. It literally was my childhood favorite film and still is and all the emotional songs that Phil Collins made still brings me back to that exact moment I felt watching It for the 1st time and makes me teary eyed
when tarzan meets clayton, and clayton says “are we related?” i heard it was because in the story of tarzan, they are related (cousins i believe?) so clayton’s question is sorta like a nod to the actual story :)
I remember being a kid and seeing this in the cinema, and it was my first experience being completely blown away by something. That opening is so intense and amazing, my little kid brain was shook lol
I remember my mom randomly came home with a gift of this movie on VHS and some Batman Beyond Valentines Day candy. Then I proceeded to enjoy this masterpiece. From the heartfelt story, to Jane ofc 🥰, to Phill Collin’s vibes, this movie doesn’t get enough love. And that imagery of the villain defeated at the end! Haunting stuff lmao.
The video game, which I LOVED, had scenes from the film that led you around the game. I need that game back. Tarzan is hands down one of my favorite animated films. From the hand drawn brilliance, amazing voice acting, MUSIC and storyline is just S tier!
I loved the video game for that reason. It was the first game I got with my PSone along with Gran Turismo 2. N64 also had the game but it didn't have scenes from the movie on that version
This film truly marked the end of the Disney Renaissance. It's sad when you think about it. From the 80s to the 90s, Disney gave it's best animation in film and TV.
Tarzan was such a classic for me to watch growing up. I still enjoy watching it from time to time today. And I still listen to the music on spotify, like everyday lol!
The tech developed for the tree surfing portions of this film was called "Deep Canvas". It basically took the computer generated wire frame shapes of the trees and wrapped a traditionally painted texture around it. This is one of the movies that made me want to be an animator when I was growing up (I was 14/15 in 1999). I ended up being an illustrator, so Jane has always been my Disney "princess". 😊
when i first saw this, i was like 7 and we saw it in theaters. i was crying so hard we have to leave the theater and i was absolutely inconsolable for several hours. i never felt that strongly ever about a movie. finally the next year i kind of made myself sit through it and while it still made me emotional, it became one of my favorite movies and still is to this day. it always still makes me cry.
The part where Tarzan comforts Kala right after he'd put on human clothes and says "No matter where I go, you will always be my mother" always made me tear up.
Does anyone remember the Play Station 1 game of this movie? The baboon level where you had to slide along the branches opening the umbrella to push them off was so much fun, and the one against Sabor always gave me anxiety xD
Amazing reaction to a even greater movie!! I watched this one every time Disney Channel aired it. The music, the story and the mood in it were outstanding. Fun fact is that Phill Collins not only wrote, composed and sang all the songs but also did their Spanish translation and sang them too in the Latin American and Spain's version of the movie.
This was the first movie I ever saw in a cinema! It's also one of the first things I remember being influenced by in regards to how I perceive and interact with nature. I was horrified by Clayton and his crew of thugs and later learned what poachers are, then spent several years fixated on spreading awareness since it was all I knew how to do as a kid. This movie might be the source of one of my first true passions! It's pretty special to me
Tarzan was my very first movie i watched as a 9 year old and fell in love with animation, really enjoyed watching Tarzan's behind the scenes. I used to pause every scene and draw and now I'm working hard to build my portfolio to get hired at animation studio one day (hopefully soon or this year) Great reaction John!
Tarzan and Brother Bear are two of my top 10 favorite animation films for mostly one reason, i love the soundtrack in them. Phil collins is a genius in both and should be recognized for it.
John, I haven’t been able to watch his movie a long time because my nanny used to sing you’ll be in my heart to me and she passed away when I was 18 so thank you for doing this. I can’t watch it alone
I will never stop loving this movie. I don't know exactly why, but ever since it first came out when I was a kid... When I saw it back in theaters, I made my mom watch it with me at least twice.
Same here. Even if this was a bad film, it will always have a special place in my heart because of that. The fact that it was a great film just makes it even more special
This was my favorite Disney movie of all time then I found out Mr Collins learned French German and 2 dialects of Spanish to be able to record his songs in different languages so kids in other countries could also sing then. It is now by FAR my favorite Disney movie
I’ve been alive 20 and half years. This movie came out when I was -4 years young. I remember watching it for the first time in daycare when I was 4 to 6 years old. As of today I finally own the greatest of the Disney Renaissance movies on Blu Ray after all this time 🎉❤
You kind of have that 3D element to it especially during Tarzan landing on the ground, with the whole foreground shot as he is slowly circling with the Leopard doing the same thing. Also the photo realistic animation with the Jungle mixed with 2D animation makes the film kind of standout. You kind of sense life when you see the whole jungle setting because it was telling a story.
the best soundtrack of all disney movies, of course I love other songs like “make a man out of you” or “part of the world”, but these feel like actual songs not just soundtracks from an animation film.
This movie is great from the music to the animation style and to the cast it's just a great movie, here's a little fact they taped skateboarders and to capture Tarzans tree surfing. Phil Collins is the greatest and he did amazing work on this movies music. this is my # 4 favorite Disney movie of all time
The finale of the Disney Renaisssance. Started with The Little Mermaid and ended with Tarzan. Tarzan’s “vine surfing” was actually inspired by Glen Keane’s son skateboarding. And Tarzan is the first nearly unclothed animated male which made the animation tricky since the anatomy has to be consistent.
@@TheKyrix82 about what? That Disney live action movie remakes sucks? Because that is truth. I'm curious.... What Disney live action movie remake that you think good? Do tell
@@bphater31 Jungle Book was far better than anyone gave it credit for, and as someone who never really got into the animated Aladdin movies, the live action one was fantastic. And if you want to get technical, Captain America 3 and Infinity War/Endgame were live-action remakes.
The signature "Tarzan Yell" from the scene with Sabor (15:53) is to this day one of the single most incredibly pieces of voice acting I've ever heard. Similarly, his yell of rage at Clayton (36.25) is immaculate. Seriously, try it sometime. It is incredibly difficult to mimic either of those well, let alone come up with it on the spot like the actual actor had to do. I will forever give props to the man that managed to accomplish this.
On a side note, I've gone back on Disney+ and rewatched alot of "classic Disney animated shows, the Lilo and Stitch Series, Kim Possible, The Proud Family, as well as live action shows like The Suite Life if Zack and Cody, The Suite Life on Deck, Wizards of Waverly Place, That's So Raven, Hannah Montana, Austin and Ally etc, and I thought to myself "Man, where did the shows with heart go?" Sure, we've got great shows now, but man oh man, these shows and movies are special.
There is a theory that Tarzan’s parents are Elsa and Anna’s parents too, from Frozen. Their parents were the king and queen and they left out on a diplomatic trip on a ship and never returned. The theory is they were gone over a year and Tarzan was born so they never knew or met him. The ship hit a storm and was blown off course and that’s where Tarzan’s story begins. It would be crazy if Disney made that link in a movie.
Probably not in my top Disney movies but the soundtrack is undeniably the best of all time for an animated film. Still have some of the bangers in my music library today
The Phil Collins songs here are classic, but Mark Mancina doesn't get enough credit for the score. It's cut off here, but the tune at 20:40 is some of my favorite movie music of all time. The music was a very collaborative effort between them and they won the Grammy for Best Soundtrack together.
I also felt like Tarzan was really going for a lot of what worked with Lion King, between the setting, the music and songs (with Collins instead of Elton John), and even the editing. But they pulled it off - it's a worth successor.
One of my fav Disney movies ever. And if they ever decide to live action remake this ( I really hope they don’t ) I think it’d be really really cool if they got Jason Momoa and Emilia Clarke as Tarzan and Jane just so we can get those 2 back on screen as a couple again 😂
in my mind I've always called Tarzan's parents James and Lily cus the moms red hair and them being badass but dead reminds me of Harry Potter's parents. (in the Tarzan books their names are Alice and John, but I've never read them)
This came out around the time Tony Hawk's Pro Skater was all the rage, and I recall them taking heavy inspiration from Tony Hawk for Tarzan's sliding motion through the trees. He's even goofy-footed, just like Tony Hawk. This might be Mandela Effect, but I remember some behind the scenes stuff where they actually motion captured a bunch of skateboarders.
Fun little Easter egg: when the gorillas hold Jane’s father upside down and the items fall out of his pockets, one of the items is a keychain of Mulan’s dog ‘Little Brother’ 😊
This is my favorite Disney movie. My mom and I bonded over Phil Collins when I was a child. Plus, the hidden themes in the movie make this extra special to me.
Funnily enough I saw Tarzan 2 before I saw the first one. I never watched the first one as a kid but we had the second one on DVD. I watched that movie so many times as a kid that it's still fresh in my mind even though I haven't seen it in years.
It's quite interesting that in the original book Tarzan killed Kerchak as a competitor for the leader's place (and also because he despised him and perceived him as a threat). Shortly before that, Tarzan had killed his brother for the same reason. In general, he killed a lot, for example, cannibal natives, whom he hung on vines initially out of revenge for the death of his mother (they killed her), and then for fun.

27:34 😅 I was expecting to see a clip of Admiral Ackbar saying “It’s a trap!” Lol! 😆
Clayton accidentally hanging himself is definitely in top 3 darkest Disney villain deaths.
the best soundtrack of all disney movies, of course I love other songs like “make a man out of you” or “part of the world”, but these feel like actual songs not just soundtracks from an animation film.
I used to love playing the game on PC and PlayStation. Tree surfing from the monkeys was my favorite.
This movie is great from the music to the animation style and to the cast it's just a great movie, here's a little fact they taped skateboarders and to capture Tarzans tree surfing. Phil Collins is the greatest and he did amazing work on this movies music. this is my # 4 favorite Disney movie of all time
Even if I'm french, I prefer the original version of " Son of man " (Phil Collins did the french version)
A Disney classic is just what we needed.
Phil Collins kills it with the soundtrack
37:36 Oh being young again and not realizing how gruesome Disney villains deaths were in some of this movies haha 🫠🫠🫠
Tarzan is absolutely one of my favorites!
Disney! Don't touch this movie! We don't need a live action remake!
...I'm not sure I have the heart to tell you this...but there's a TON of live action Tarzan already...
@@TheKyrix82
I know. But only Disney don't know how to do a good live action remake.
@@bphater31 And that's a case of you being blatantly wrong.
Still an awesome Disney classic
they should watch Atlantis and Treasure planet they are both amazing
"You'll Be My Heart" is the best song at the end of the 90s
The signature "Tarzan Yell" from the scene with Sabor (15:53) is to this day one of the single most incredibly pieces of voice acting I've ever heard. Similarly, his yell of rage at Clayton (36.25) is immaculate. Seriously, try it sometime. It is incredibly difficult to mimic either of those well, let alone come up with it on the spot like the actual actor had to do. I will forever give props to the man that managed to accomplish this.
This and tangled are the best disney films ever. tarzan is one of the best movie in general aswell.
Tarzans parents building that entire house and Tarzan not even being old enough to walk yet is kinda crazy, they were some godlike carpenters 😅
grew up watching this and love it
I really like this movie. I was happy during my daughters Tarzan phase. It was a good time period.
I absolutely loved this movie as a little little kid
There is a theory that Tarzan’s parents are Elsa and Anna’s parents too, from Frozen. Their parents were the king and queen and they left out on a diplomatic trip on a ship and never returned. The theory is they were gone over a year and Tarzan was born so they never knew or met him. The ship hit a storm and was blown off course and that’s where Tarzan’s story begins. It would be crazy if Disney made that link in a movie.
Yes, more John movie reactions please. Your wit is much enjoyed 😊
The classic Disney movies were so dark and amazing the more newer ones don’t seem that
Probably not in my top Disney movies but the soundtrack is undeniably the best of all time for an animated film. Still have some of the bangers in my music library today
This was probably the last true Disney 2D animated masterpiece and marked the end of an era.
PHIL COLLINS IS THE 🐐
The Phil Collins songs here are classic, but Mark Mancina doesn't get enough credit for the score.
For some reason the way Jane's hands were animated is one of my favorites. Her fingers just look so delicate and dainty
This movie is such a classic
A classic! I own it! It’s such a great movie and soundtrack.
this will always be one of my absolute old time favorite disney movies absolutely beautiful from beginning to end in every regard❤
Phil Collins did an unbelievable job.
This movie and the Disney tv show set after this movie are imprinted in my childhood
in my mind I've always called Tarzan's parents James and Lily cus the moms red hair and them being badass but dead reminds me of Harry Potter's parents.
Tarzan 2 is also low key pretty funny and entertaining.
It’s also a prequel so it would de interesting if they reacted too.
