Finally, FINALLY!!! Someone pointed out and demonstrated that one gets the same shallow depth of field, but at one stop brighter. Fantastic review, though I disagree with the assessment that the canon focal reducer doesn't introduce distortion. When switching back and forth between it and the Metabones it looked as if there was a bit of field curvature at the bottom and top on the Canon adapter. Also, to me, it looked like the Canon adapter had more contrast to the image, but the Metabones showed more subtle details in the scratches in the blacks on that test chart. Depending on the type of shot one was after and where the detail was I think there is a good case for either adapter. Both were beyond sharp enough for any 4k work in my opinion, but the difference in character between the two is far more interesting to me. Great stuff!
It does get a stop brighter but it's also a stop noisier. Many people are confused by this only because Canon is not showing the aperture in full frame terms but in a relation to crop. It's impossible to get f2.0 out of f2.8 lens, that number in camera is just in relation to crop and it just confuses everyone. That's why you lose a stop of everything when you put a full frame lens on a crop, that 2.8 "becomes" like f4 in reality, compared to a full frame. Bottom line, when you set a f2.0 aperture on a C70 with a speedbooster, it's actually a f2.8 in full frame terms, because there is no reason to talk in crop frame terms. Why wouldn't we talk in iPhone sensor size terms and that aperture becomes f0.1? We don't do that because that makes no sense, we don't want to mix apples and oranges, talking only in full frame terms we can compare lenses and everything, but Canon (and all other brands) used this situation of a brighter image to "sell it" like a bigger aperture. The Matrix :)
Amazing explanation, thanks for that! What I cannot understand is that full frame lenses (RF and EF mainly) are multiplying their focal length when we use them on S35 bodies. That concludes a 50mm EF lens will be multiplied by 1.6 when it's attached to a S35 sensor like the C70. So we are talking for a 80mm lens. But when we will use 0.71x focal reducer then the same 50mm EF lens works like a true 50mm lens just like if we used this lens to a Full frame camera like the R5. The issue here is that the camera will read the lens as a 35mm. So Canon has to fix this with a firmware upgrade so we can see the same mm when we use a lens with the focal reducer. Ofc with the same logic every FF lens we put w/o adapter to a S35 sensor then we should see it multiplied by 1.6. It's confusing and mainly Im asking cause Im not sure if my explanation is right or missing something.

When you put a 50mm lens on a C70 with the focal reducer and it reports "35mm f1.0", it's saying that you're getting the field of view and light gathering that you'd get from putting a 35mm f1.0 lens on the C70, *without* any focal reducer. What the camera is doing is it's computing the focal length and aperture equivalence according to the camera's cropped sensor size, *not* according to a full frame 36x24mm sensor. If you want to convert to the full frame equivalence, you can read the focal length and aperture on the C70's display and multiply by 1.37, and this should work regardless of if you're using the focal reducer or not, because when you use the focal reducer it divides by 1.37 for you. I agree that having the camera do all these conversions is pretty confusing though.

EF-S lenses focal length for example is based on full frame or crop)? So why to put ourselves to procedure to convert our full frame lenses to match a crop sensor in first place when all these lenses are made with full frame sensors in mind? We should be able to see the same focal length the lens is to avoid confusion I think.
@@marioskarageorgiou6758 The focal length is an inherent physical property of the lens, which is simply the length between the sensor and a certain point within the lens. The difference between EF and EFS lenses of the same focal length is simply the size of the image circle (and some parts in the lens mount). When you connect a lens to a focal reducer, that actually changes the focal length of the lens+focal reducer combo, multiplying the focal length by 0.71. So technically, the focal length displayed on the C70 is a physical dimension of the lens attached to it. However, because the C70 has a small sensor, for a given focal length, the C70 has a smaller field of view than the same lens on a camera with a full frame sensor. The tricky part is that when you use a focal reducer with the C70, you're actually changing the lens by lowering its focal length (and shrinking its image circle). Hope that explains things a little more clearly

This makes it easier to choose the right focal lenth you need to choose with in mind that you might have to take some extra feet backwards to have the same composition as you should with the same lens in a full frame sensor. That way you keep the same perspective as much as you can. So a focal reducer then tries to "cheat" the crop factor and gives the full frame look with one stop of extra light but not with the same bokeh which will be different by one stop again, right?
Thanks for the video, quite interesting results! I do wonder though what's the exact limit of the focal reducer on full frame sensor and there's a way to find that out which you almost did! :D This is useful because cropping to 2.39:1 you partially remove the corners and having 8K from R5 you can further crop in to 7K and have a beautiful image with medium format lens through speed booster on full frame. This is what I though of for testing that: 1. Put something optically great on the R5, like Otus 85 and measure "acceptable" vignette of a full frame lens 2. Take note of the distortion and softness of the Mamia lens on medium format 3. Mount Mamia lens on the R5 with focal reducer and check the image circle where vignette is comparable to Otus and have a look if softness / distortion is similar to performance on medium format camera Would be great to know! Focal reducers only compress a full frame image onto smaller sensor (in this case Super35). So with a perfect focal reducer *nothing* about the image is different from the full frame image (no change in dof, light transmitted, etc). So if your experience is that that nothing is different with the focal reducer compared to your full frame cameras, that’s a correct observation. Most confusion stems from lens being “reworded” into the native mount, to try to make the operator think of the lens in native terms instead of Super35. Which is terribly confusing/unhelpful if you want to think in full frame terms (would be so much easer if you could disable this, but you cannot, in any current system I am aware of).

Ugh. Focal reducers do not change focal length. It only changes FOV/image circle. This is one of those things that confuses so many people because they don’t understand the difference between focal length and image circle. They mistakenly believe that it’s the lenses that crop and not the sensor. A 50mm crop lens and a 50mm FF lens would look exactly the same on a crop camera. The difference is the image circle they’re both capable of making. In your example at 1:40 ish, it’s the same thing. Your 50mm lens is reducing the image circle size onto these crop frame sensors, effectively allowing them to show their entire FOV. It is NOT becoming a different focal length. A 50mm is a 50mm. Edit: you address how focal length reducer calculations work later in the video and that info is all correct. I just really dislike people effectively saying that one focal length becomes another, as it doesn’t.
I didn't test it, however we did test it with the Canon lens that we mentioned in the video, which it performed very well with, so in theory no flaws should be added with the Mamiya. Jake
As an owner of C70 and R5 i can add one tip to your audience. On the R5, if you use low quality mode for 4K it looks pretty bad. Very mushy compared to High Quality mode. If you switch to Crop Mode + Low Quality it actually looks really good. They’re doing some sort of advanced scaling while in crop mode. Therefore, theoretically, if you the speedbooster on the R5 in Crop Mode/Low Quality you’ll actually get an image close to 4K High Quality Full Frame, without the short record times and overheating. 🤓
That’s because the normal FF 4K is using pixel binning, while the crop mode is over sampling from 5.1K which is why the crop mode looks higher detail than Normal 4K
How was the coverage test made - at infinity focus or closer? It is a normal thing to have bigger coverage on macro shots and worse on infinity. If the booster covers larger than 35mm sensor - that is awesome!
@@CVPTV so it is simmilar or slightly bigger coverage than the Metabones one. Cool it is a cool device. I use it on my Sonys for years. But now Canon offers booster with AF :).

@@CVPTV I use the MB booster to take photos in a square with fast lenses. It kinda reminds me of a 6x6 medium format look if I use a fast prime. Also some of the combos can cover more than a square. And I crop the black areas... I suppose that this combo will make the C70 a low light power house :) especially with some lenses that can benefit from a booster. Here is another example - Sigma 35 1.4 Art can cover 1.2x crop of a full frame sensor for video in 16:9 and I use that to film with A7III in 4K 30p(it naturally has 1.2x crop in 30p) in a really low light situation. It gains a good amount of light more than without the booster. It is an interesting toy to play with. Nice review of the Canon booster :)!

Has anyone tested the sharpness wide open on fast lenses with and without the Canon focal reducer? I have major sharpness issues with other brands starting at f2.4 and is completely unusable and soft at f1.8 and beyond. Looking forward to answers, thanks.
Just started using one, and noticed strong CA (magenta mostly) when paired with the Sigma 50mm Art lens. Focus is still sharp, but the CA is miserable.
Am I the only one seeing this as a viable option for shooting medium format with the R5??? I mean, the vignette is actually quite workable! It actually is not completely dark at any point of the frame! I would LOVE to see, and again, I may be the only one, but the canon r5 in full-frame mode with the sigma 40mm f1.4, which can cover medium format with minor vignetting. Pretty please?! BIG question though, will it still autofocus in full-frame mode with the speed booster?

Like I said in the vid, we didn't test the overheating, just AF performance and coverage for the R5. For most people the regular adapter will be fine. For people who in theory want longer runtimes using the focal reducer and the R5's crop mode could be a good option, but that is down to the end user. Jake

The metabones speed booster with it latest firmware update now supports the eosr r5 r6 and c70 plus the metabones is 479.00 which is a 120.00 cheaper than the canon version.

Gaining one stop of light is great but ... i had so many adapters the last years that i am simply done with adapters. Aps-C does not look bad but if you also make picture there is always the struggle with lenses. So both aps-c and the need for adapters are total dealbreakers for me now.
I wish Sigma could make a EF-E focal reducer for their EF mount lenses for Sony apsc. Sony also has a lot of legacy A-mount glass too but their LE-A5 adapter really bottled such an opportunity.
Great video! The most surprising thing for me is that the focal reducer allowed you 'speed boost' medium format lenses onto the full frame of the R5?!?! As far as I'm aware, the Kipon Baveyes is the only other product that can do that? Opens up a lot of interesting opportunities for old MF lenses. It would be great to see some further examples of this with a more interesting frame!

@@CVPTV Sure, there's some meaty vignette in those corners, too much for day to day filming, but as an option for stylised narrative stuff, doesn't seem unable to me - especially if you're planning on going wider than 16:9. I bet you've seen worse vignettes on Tarantino films, or anything shot prior to the 1990s...! But, perhaps I'm being a tad niche.

Still worth noting that with focal reducers chroma aberrations do have a tendency to pop up in more real world scenarios than the chart you used. However, maybe the Canon does an excellent job. 50mm lens with 0.71 focal reducer will make it a 35mm field of view, but there is not a full frame sensor but a super 35 (about same size as APS-C) so u need to apply a 1.6 crop wich makes the field of view 50mm again (take or leave a few mm). Same goes for depth of field, f 1.4 x 0.71 is f 1. O. But u got the super 35 sensor again which makes it a 1.4 depth if field again.
Both are fantastic cameras. The S1H is better for video, R5 better for stills. If you can work with the limitations of the R5's video, its a better hybrid camera, however if your primary format is video, go with the S1H. Jake
The flaring is slightly stronger on the metabones, however the shapes are not as solid like the canon, with a very obvious purple circle, which I heard many complaints about. Anyone has experience with the metabones on the R6/R5 and would recommend it?
The Canon C70 although flawed camera in many ways (codecs,bad flip screen++) can be transformed into a great cinema camera using the Speedbooster. If I was between a Komodo and a C70 with the speedbooster I would go C70. I'm a Blackmagic user and probably I will stay but I can say that speedbooster from canon changes everything about the camera. I would never consider the C70 without the booster.

We would like to see a proximity test concerning the depth of field difference between the regular adapter and the speed booster. Like to get the same frame from a speed boosted to a non speed boosted frame We have to move closer to the subject in focus since the speed booster gets you a wider field of view. And this stepping closer to the subject in focus results in a blurrier background. I hope I am explaining myself right. We need to see a speed booted image and a non speed boosted image side to side Covering the same frame ( compensating for the wider field of view ) to see the difference in background blur
I tried my C70 with Sigma Art 24-70 2.8 and it has so big chromatic aberration on whole frame , that I cannot use any footage from such combination. I do not have any other full frame lenses to check. Any idea? You tested this lens and checked all boxes. It is possible my reducer is faulty?
If it’s an EF mount, there’s no reason why not. Your 200mm would lose a bit of its reach though. It would effectively be a 189mm f/1.3 telephoto, on the Komodo, and a 194mm f/1.3 telephoto, on the C70. Whereas natively, the C70’s crop factor of 1.37 means your lens is effectively a 274mm f/1.8 telephoto, and the Komodo’s crop factor of 1.33 means your lens is effectively a 266mm f/1.8 telephoto. ...assuming I did that math correctly anyway.
@@fr33dom_s4int FYI, I ended up getting the metabones ef-rf speedbooster, and it works to mechanically attach the lens, however the electronic passthrough is currently not working properly and it won't auto or manual focus. I can still take video through it though!
If somebody wonders what happens to the bokeh of the 50mm prime when using the booster - the edges with darker and reddish color, the problem is the sensor. BSI sensors do not do this. Dual pixel sensors are not BSI - that is why this happens.

Thanks for the great detailed review. I want to point out that the title of the video and some of the content is misleading. A speedbooster does not make an S35 camera full frame. A speedbooster will create two of the properties of a full frame sensor - the field of view and depth of field - but it does not reproduce the depth-rendering of a full-frame camera. We've had this debate before but if you look carefully at the well-done comparison frames in the video at 1.30 or 2.07 you'll see that the face on full frame is rendered slightly flatter than the face on the left, even when everything else is matched. The reason for this can be explained if you draw out a scientific diagram. Another way to think about might be to look at the image you get in a more extreme situation such as the ultra speedbooster on the Pocket4k. This gives the the field of view and depth of field of a full frame camera but have a look at it and tell me it has a full frame look to it. An even more extreme example is an adaptor to put DSLR lenses on a mobile phone camera - they do not give you the look of a DSLR. It's the same principle. Anyway appreciate these tests!

filmmakers who think these camera are going to make them great filmmakers and cinematographers have it all wrong. the beauty of a brilliantly photographed film comes from the artist themselves who see the light, the shadows, the movement, and the environment itself before the camera ever looks at it as one unifying puzzle which completes each scene .

I've been using the Tamron 24-70 2.8 with the C70 and the focal reducer. No issues with it what-so-ever. Great combo for run and gun.

Basically you get one more stop of light because of the magnifying glass effect of light on the sensor but the field of view and DOF remains the same.

The dual pixel area crop is a software handicap. Like the classic canon tactics. The sensor sees you, it CAN track you.
Ugh. Focal reducers do not change focal length. It only changes FOV/image circle. This is one of those things that confuses so many people because they don’t understand the difference between focal length and image circle. They mistakenly believe that it’s the lenses that crop and not the sensor. A 50mm crop lens and a 50mm FF lens would look exactly the same on a crop camera. The difference is the image circle they’re both capable of making.
In your example at 1:40 ish, it’s the same thing. Your 50mm lens is reducing the image circle size onto these crop frame sensors, effectively allowing them to show their entire FOV. It is NOT becoming a different focal length. A 50mm is a 50mm.
Edit: you address how focal length reducer calculations work later in the video and that info is all correct. I just really dislike people effectively saying that one focal length becomes another, as it doesn’t.

Great video. With the mamiya, did you notice the reducer affect it's image characteristics at all? Not just it's vignetting.
I didn't test it, however we did test it with the Canon lens that we mentioned in the video, which it performed very well with, so in theory no flaws should be added with the Mamiya. Jake

Can you stack a speedbooster to a kipper ?
As an owner of C70 and R5 i can add one tip to your audience. On the R5, if you use low quality mode for 4K it looks pretty bad. Very mushy compared to High Quality mode. If you switch to Crop Mode + Low Quality it actually looks really good. They’re doing some sort of advanced scaling while in crop mode.
Therefore, theoretically, if you the speedbooster on the R5 in Crop Mode/Low Quality you’ll actually get an image close to 4K High Quality Full Frame, without the short record times and overheating. 🤓
That’s because the normal FF 4K is using pixel binning, while the crop mode is over sampling from 5.1K which is why the crop mode looks higher detail than Normal 4K

How was the coverage test made - at infinity focus or closer? It is a normal thing to have bigger coverage on macro shots and worse on infinity. If the booster covers larger than 35mm sensor - that is awesome!
Tested it at both Inf & CF, there was barely any difference on the R5. The booster doesn't cover the R5 in FF. Jake
@@CVPTV so it is simmilar or slightly bigger coverage than the Metabones one. Cool it is a cool device. I use it on my Sonys for years. But now Canon offers booster with AF :).
@@SimeonKolev I didn't check the coverage of the MB option as really they are not designed to be used with a FF sensor, hence why it Vignettes on the R5. Jake
@@CVPTV I use the MB booster to take photos in a square with fast lenses. It kinda reminds me of a 6x6 medium format look if I use a fast prime. Also some of the combos can cover more than a square. And I crop the black areas... I suppose that this combo will make the C70 a low light power house :) especially with some lenses that can benefit from a booster.
Here is another example - Sigma 35 1.4 Art can cover 1.2x crop of a full frame sensor for video in 16:9 and I use that to film with A7III in 4K 30p(it naturally has 1.2x crop in 30p) in a really low light situation. It gains a good amount of light more than without the booster.
It is an interesting toy to play with.

Has anyone tested the sharpness wide open on fast lenses with and without the Canon focal reducer? I have major sharpness issues with other brands starting at f2.4 and is completely unusable and soft at f1.8 and beyond. Looking forward to answers, thanks.
Just started using one, and noticed strong CA (magenta mostly) when paired with the Sigma 50mm Art lens. Focus is still sharp, but the CA is miserable.
Certain lens seem to do some funky stuff with the adapter while others work fine.

Am I the only one seeing this as a viable option for shooting medium format with the R5??? I mean, the vignette is actually quite workable! It actually is not completely dark at any point of the frame! I would LOVE to see, and again, I may be the only one, but the canon r5 in full-frame mode with the sigma 40mm f1.4, which can cover medium format with minor vignetting. Pretty please?! BIG question though, will it still autofocus in full-frame mode with the speed booster?

I would pick the C70 over the C200 currently as the sensor is better. If you can stretch to it the C300 III is a fantastic option to. Jake

Like I said in the vid, we didn't test the overheating, just AF performance and coverage for the R5. For most people the regular adapter will be fine. For people who in theory want longer runtimes using the focal reducer and the R5's crop mode could be a good option, but that is down to the end user. Jake
I have a question, If I need lets say 24mm RF Lens that's made for super35 sensor size, is the crop factor count necessary or is it made to fit with the readable outcome so I don't have to convert?

Currently you can't control aperture or autofocus so not great but this will probably be fixed with firmware at some point. Jake
The metabones speed booster with it latest firmware update now supports the eosr r5 r6 and c70 plus the metabones is 479.00 which is a 120.00 cheaper than the canon version.

Gaining one stop of light is great but ... i had so many adapters the last years that i am simply done with adapters. Aps-C does not look bad but if you also make picture there is always the struggle with lenses. So both aps-c and the need for adapters are total dealbreakers for me now.

I wish Sigma could make a EF-E focal reducer for their EF mount lenses for Sony apsc. Sony also has a lot of legacy A-mount glass too but their LE-A5 adapter really bottled such an opportunity.
Great video! The most surprising thing for me is that the focal reducer allowed you 'speed boost' medium format lenses onto the full frame of the R5?!?! As far as I'm aware, the Kipon Baveyes is the only other product that can do that? Opens up a lot of interesting opportunities for old MF lenses. It would be great to see some further examples of this with a more interesting frame!
Hey Ben, The Kipon adapters are designed to cover sensors larger than S35, where as from the tests results in this vid, you can see the Canon one doesn't. Jake
@@CVPTV Sure, there's some meaty vignette in those corners, too much for day to day filming, but as an option for stylised narrative stuff, doesn't seem unable to me - especially if you're planning on going wider than 16:9. I bet you've seen worse vignettes on Tarantino films, or anything shot prior to the 1990s...! But, perhaps I'm being a tad niche.

Focal reducers generally always introduce a substantial amount of chromatic aberration. Did you test for that?
With this adapter I couldn't see the addition of any CA with the lenses I tested. I do mention this in the video. Jake
@@CVPTV Cool. Just checked the moment in the video where you speak of it. So seems like Canon is better at reducing Chromatic abberration. Still worth noting that with focal reducers chroma aberrations do have a tendency to pop up in more real world scenarios than the chart you used. However, maybe the Canon does an excellent job. The coverage isn’t shrunk down with the aforementioned three lenses that are “fully supported”
50mm lens with 0.71 focal reducer will make it a 35mm field of view, but there is not a full frame sensor but a super 35 (about same size as APS-C) so u need to apply a 1.6 crop wich makes the field of view 50mm again (take or leave a few mm). Same goes for depth of field, f 1.4 x 0.71 is f 1. O. But u got the super 35 sensor again which makes it a 1.4 depth if field again.

Both are fantastic cameras. The S1H is better for video, R5 better for stills. If you can work with the limitations of the R5's video, its a better hybrid camera, however if your primary format is video, go with the S1H. Jake
The flaring is slightly stronger on the metabones, however the shapes are not as solid like the canon, with a very obvious purple circle, which I heard many complaints about. Anyone has experience with the metabones on the R6/R5 and would recommend it?
The Canon C70 although flawed camera in many ways (codecs,bad flip screen++) can be transformed into a great cinema camera using the Speedbooster. If I was between a Komodo and a C70 with the speedbooster I would go C70. I'm a Blackmagic user and probably I will stay but I can say that speedbooster from canon changes everything about the camera. I would never consider the C70 without the booster.

We would like to see a proximity test concerning the depth of field difference between the regular adapter and the speed booster.
Like to get the same frame from a speed boosted to a non speed boosted frame
We have to move closer to the subject in focus since the speed booster gets you a wider field of view.
And this stepping closer to the subject in focus results in a blurrier background.

I tried my C70 with Sigma Art 24-70 2.8 and it has so big chromatic aberration on whole frame , that I cannot use any footage from such combination. I do not have any other full frame lenses to check. Any idea? You tested this lens and checked all boxes. It is possible my reducer is faulty?
What I really want to know is if I can combine this with the 1.8 200mm to make an extremely fast telephoto
If it’s an EF mount, there’s no reason why not. Your 200mm would lose a bit of its reach though. It would effectively be a 189mm f/1.3 telephoto, on the Komodo, and a 194mm f/1.3 telephoto, on the C70. Whereas natively, the C70’s crop factor of 1.37 means your lens is effectively a 274mm f/1.8 telephoto, and the Komodo’s crop factor of 1.33 means your lens is effectively a 266mm f/1.8 telephoto. ...assuming I did that math correctly anyway.
@@fr33dom_s4int FYI, I ended up getting the metabones ef-rf speedbooster, and it works to mechanically attach the lens, however the electronic passthrough is currently not working properly and it won't auto or manual focus. I can still take video through it though!

If somebody wonders what happens to the bokeh of the 50mm prime when using the booster - the edges with darker and reddish color, the problem is the sensor. BSI sensors do not do this. Dual pixel sensors are not BSI - that is why this happens.

Thanks for the great detailed review. I want to point out that the title of the video and some of the content is misleading. A speedbooster does not make an S35 camera full frame. A speedbooster will create two of the properties of a full frame sensor - the field of view and depth of field - but it does not reproduce the depth-rendering of a full-frame camera. We've had this debate before but if you look carefully at the well-done comparison frames in the video at 1.30 or 2.07 you'll see that the face on full frame is rendered slightly flatter than the face on the left, even when everything else is matched. The reason for this can be explained if you draw out a scientific diagram. Another way to think about might be to look at the image you get in a more extreme situation such as the ultra speedbooster on the Pocket4k. This gives the the field of view and depth of field of a full frame camera but have a look at it and tell me it has a full frame look to it. An even more extreme example is an adaptor to put DSLR lenses on a mobile phone camera - they do not give you the look of a DSLR. It's the same principle. Anyway appreciate these tests!

Focal Reducers makes swirly effect with some lenses like old lenses . Didn't you try to see whether canon has or not ?

filmmakers who think these camera are going to make them great filmmakers and cinematographers have it all wrong. the beauty of a brilliantly photographed film comes from the artist themselves who see the light, the shadows, the movement, and the environment itself before the camera ever looks at it as one unifying puzzle which completes each scene .
