Its a Speed Booster, that's why you are getting the 1.0 now. That is one of the other major benefits to a sped booster/focal reducer is the extra stops of light from the element being farther out. On my EF 16-35 4.0 I can stop down to 2.8 with this adapter. I am actually using mine the same way as you are, this thing is gold in crop mode on the R5. Great video. I still need to make one myself on this item now that I just finished my Viltrox RF 85 Review.
Nice review Michael, if Canon make an aps-c R7 camera this should work well with wide angle and normal lenses to give almost full frame field of view with a slight 1.1 crop. I would buy this crop camera for replacing my old 7D mark ii to use with my telephoto EF lens for bird photography but also using the focal reducer I could shoot nearly full frame with my EF 50, 85, & 135mm FF lens for protraits. Thanks Noel
Yeah Noel, a perfect piece of kit for that exact scenario but softer focus at the edges than native full frame lenses on a crop body. Something to keep in mind depending on the type of wildlife photography you do. Portraits though would look pleasing as the image is great with a small correction for aberration and some sharpening in post - to clean up the edges of the frame.
@@MichaelDrowley thanks, I'd only use the standard adapter for shooting birds with my long telephotos as I want maximum reach and sharpness/detail For portraits I'm not too bothered about softness at the edges of the image, in fact it's nicer in some ways, I mostly shoot family members who generally prefer not to see every detail/imperfection such as wrinkles or acne 😀
@@cammorton2384 yep, I'd like to try it with my EF400 f/2.8 turning it into a 283mm f/2 and also my EF300 f/2.8 for a 212mm f/2 Plus my EF100-400 f/4.5-5.6 x 0.71 = 71-283 f/3.2-4.0
It’s actually now dependant on firmware I think for both the lens and camera combo. When I tested it it didn’t force into crop mode so I could shoot with it at 28-35 mm without the crop. But other’s since I put out that video have not been able to get it to work as the lens firmware forces it into crop mode.
Works for photos as well but it’s more for when you are in crop mode and the camera doesn’t necessarily overheat in photo mode so not really necessary on the R5 for photos.
It does effect quality but surprisingly not very much. Slight hourglassing (compare 5:55 (4K fine) with 6:02 (4K cropped with FR) and it’s softer on the edges of the frame and has a very slight vignetting darkening the corners as well. The 4K fine is super sharp on the R5 but regular 4K is pretty bad on the R5 so 4K crop with viltrox is better than regular (non fine) 4K on the R5. The EOS R is different as that 4K image has some issues so the focal reducer exemplifies those problems a bit. Chromatic aberration is the biggest issue and this is exacerbated by the focal reducer (6:56) but it is easily cleaned up in post, so too the hourglassing from the focal reducer.
For the EOS R comparison see 6:51 (4K crop) compared with 7:00 (4K crop with focal reducer and issues corrected in post.) It actually looks pretty decent and would barely be noticeable for most applications.
6:00 The sample with the booster, its quality look aweful especially for their corners, so I can see the letters 4:33:2 look much uglier than HQ mode without booster. It feels like almost same EF-M2 adaptor for EFM mount. So I suggest you to use this one for higer F value lenes more than F5.6 and then your results will be better

It’s like magic isn’t it! Haha. Will check out your lens review - thanks for your comments

I would suggest turn the volume down on the background music to hear you better
Thanks for the suggestion Jose
Great video mate! Keen to catch up soon!
Yes brother, was just thinking about yah! I’ll DM you
if you adapt the sigma 18-35mm on it will the camera switch to crop mode?

I understand its only dedicated for video not photos?

Viltrox being Viltrox, how much is image quality affected by using this?

@@shivarajcreation3174 Hi, unfortunately it has been discontinued. I can sell you mine if you like - only used a couple times.
They have one for Sony?
Not that I can see, no! They do have one to adapt Nikon lenses to Sony E Mount though. Check out the viltrox site and see if they have what you need.
