    Thanx for not boasting about having all those gears and discouraging other people who can't afford to have this amazing studio but still love to make music with their basic setup ! Respect

    The thing you said at the end is probably the most important thing that guys like me (that are just starting) have to remember all the time. Your setup is awesome, and I want to build a studio as cool as yours some day, but if I don't learn how to work with just a mic and practically anything else more, I'll never be able to get good. It's some good advice, I think!

    I love S1. It just has so much better workflow that is intuitive to anyone that has the slightest understanding to recording. Recently demoed Pro Tools and it was just annoying trying to find my way for the simplest things. While it seemed there were more options (perceived) I have never felt limited with S1. Great DAW! Nice setup too Joe!

    Excellent point you made at the end. I have some gear I use for recording audio for youtube videos as well as ham radio applications. Most of it is used gear. Much of it came from ebay. But my speakers are $10 GE bookshelf speakers from the thrift shop. They work just fine with my rolls rack mount amp from ebay. I am poor and don't have the funds for fancy ass audio gear. So I just get what I can used a little at a time. Any new stuff is lower end. Like my mics, cables, and USB audio interface. The trick is to go inexpensive but decent quality.

    I also use PreSonus Studio 1 (was a Nuendo guy) I have a Synth lab. I got rid of an Alesis 3930 about 6 years ago, big mistake, found and brought another. I record into a Roland MV 8000 then mix into Studio 1 the Fader Port is great. I like what you said about treating youself to the things you want I just retired and enjoying my lab.

    There is an Indian saying that that comes to me on you saying at the end about a two channel interface an mic; "Indian man build little fire, keep warm. White man build big fire, keep warm collecting fire wood." You're right, I've done no recording in recent years as I have just constantly collected equipment, built stuff, bought knackered valve gear to rebuild into something else etc. You are completely right - just do it! :o)

    Very nice set up. I wish I had the space you as I'm using an upstairs bedroom that I converted. But I am blessed to have that at this point. I am a Studio One 2.6 user and I'm looking to upgrade to the new version 3. I have the "baby" Studio Live 16.0.2 and I love that little thing. Fits in nicely with my current set-up. I think you sold me on the Avid Eleven rack. I play guitar as well and I have multiple amps but mostly use a Fender Blues Reissue. So I'm glad to hear that you really like that unit. (I don't fully trust all reviews sometimes.) Anyway, continued success to you. Thanks for posting your lab!!

    Love how you have things set up. I think the desk makes a big difference. I don't know if you put the rolling gobos behind you while you mix to cut down on reflections off that back wall, but I bet that would make things a little more predictable, and cave-like. Which is cool.

      +Joe Gilder Great home studio. Thanks for the tour. Just wanted to mention that the Tech 21 Sans Amp is more than just a practice amp. Everything they make is about amp / cabinet / speaker simulation. It is basically a small amp with guts of a GT2. So the XLR and 1/4" outputs on the back give you some more options for amp sims. Read up on them. I used to work there. They were on the forefront of amp sim technology.

    Hey Joe! Thanks for sharing it with us! Seems like a great space for creating music! Is there any video on mixing from that PreSonus 24.4.2, like you would do on a console setup? I do have a 16.4.2 and never really used it that way till now, but would love to see what one could accomplish working that way! If there aren't any video on this matter yet, would you consider doing one? Thanks again for all the great content! Take care, man. Cheers from Brazil

    I've noticed many of the guys on the study demos often use the Furman power conditions. I have a Furman PL-PLUS and to say the least,I was rather disappointed in it. It did nothing to quite the electrical interference that I was getting from my wall outlets. I wound up going with the Monster PRO 2500 and it made a ton of difference. i wanted to go with a larger PRO 3500 but,Monster no longer makes that series of power conditioners. All I can say is to bad because they really woked well for me.

    Curious as to how you "mix" with the studiolive. Long throw faders are great if you are recording, not so much for mixing if those faders don't do anything control surface wise. Doesn't make sense to me, but if you could explain it, that would be great.

    This studio looks a bit basic compared to mine, I'm afraid.
    1st of all, I've got a Yamaha keyboard, with 16 built in drum patterns, what can be accompanied by bass & orchestra, & 16 preset voices, including violin and piano.
    Forget his leather sofa, I've got a couple of bean bags. My bush headphones act as a mic when I change sockets, I don't need a drum machine cos I have four pads on my Yamaha, what consist of Kick drum, closed hi hat, snare and cymbal. This goes through my Goodmans Midi Hi Fi unit with stereo speakers (15 watts per channel), what also has a 5 band graphic equalizer, and "bass boost" The tape cassette on it, tapes tapes, and has a high speed dubbing function. I've got a biscuit tin, with a few elastic bands around it, what sounds better than any guitar, and my waste paper bin, doubles up as a bongo, when turned upside down. I might post a video of my tour soon.

    Joe, I am putting together my home studio after about a 6 year hiatus from the music world. I am interested in picking up a used Eleven Rack. Won't be needing it for an interface, just want it as a multi-effects unit. Am I going to have any issues using it with Studio One? Also, will I encounter any problems with firmware updates from Avid if I need them?
    Also going to add a T.C. Electronic M350 and a Lexicon MX300 to round out my effects units.
    Would love to hear your feedback on these unots.

    • @Ikas031
      @Ikas031 10 років тому

      Anything that Studio one does can be done in pro tools. Studio one does have a easier work flow than pro tools but in the end it's all personal preference. There are many great DAW's Logic, Cubase, Reaper Etc. Pick one learn it and run with it.

      IKAS I've been using Pro Tools for about 3 years now and it's great. Started in Pt8 LE to what I'm running now, Pro Tools 10. The only thing is, the faders on on the PreSonus aren't motorized so I'm wondering how he is mixing with them like he said in the video.

    • @Ikas031
      @Ikas031 10 років тому

      IndieFlare guess when he mixes through the mixer he does it the old school way processing through the mixer and then back into the DAW the same way folks use outboard summing.

    • @indieflare
      @indieflare 10 років тому +1

      IKAS Oh, as in each track going OUT a channel and then sending back a Stereo send through the board back IN to Pro Tools? Ahh, such work lol the processing on the PreSonus doesn't seem that fantastic to me to be doing that much.

    Very nice set up.. I have a question about pre amps, I am wanting to get a Presonus 16.0.2 mixer for recording and live sound but I don't understand the external or outboard "pre amp" part of the equation like how many do I need or does one pre amp control all the mic inputs? is there a certain ratio of mic/inputs to pre amps? sorry if this is a strange question but I am a beginner :-)

    • @JPDC624
      @JPDC624 8 років тому

      +Edward Eiding The XMAX preamps in the StudioLive board are great, you really only need those. If in the future you decide to tweak the color of the sound you are recording by using tube-driven preamps then you can invest in the ADL 600 and/or 700 but they are NOT necessary at all to get a great sounding studio put together (you would plug your mic(s) into the ADL units then send a line-level signal into the StudioLive, bypassing the mixer's XMAX preamps... not necessary!). Spend your energy on educating yourself in the dozens of topics for making an entire studio run, then after that you can consider specialized tube preamps, etc etc. Just my $.02, before tax and inflation. ;-)

    Very nice set up. I will say that I feel bad for people who have spent so much on a firewire device and a nice desk to fit it only to find themselves in a situation like I did with Apple making FW obsolete. Hell, I had to sell my Control 24 too because ethernet is obsolete too!! I had to resell my FW interface and control 24 just so I can run PT12 on my mac.

      +MorbidBlessing Really? I bought an adapter and it didn't seem to work. Well, I think it was the OS. I'm not 100% sure but I think Yosemite doesn't support anything firewire. Maybe it was just the adapter. I ended up getting the MOTU 828x anyway.

      +Denis Alexis Florentino no you don't need one. But one day you may want an external preamp to give you different tones.

    I need gobos like those. Do you still have Grahams info or any further recommendations?

    Okay, so I'm the kind of guy who needs physical knobs/faders in front of me, and was looking into the studiolive. I do all of my composition via ableton but am not opposed to doing my mixing somewhere else, I.E: Studio1. Theoretically, I could bounce all of my tracks from ableton over to studio1 and do my mixing with my analog hardware comps/eq's etc with the StudioLive, right?
    All of the videos I see demoing it are basically coming from a live standpoint.
    Just want to know how happy you are with the StudioLive and if you think it would work for me. Currently, I have an RME Babyface pro as my interface, and it doesn't have enough I/O for me, and I hate mixing totally in the box.

      You can't really easily incorporate analog hardware unless you're using the Aux outputs.

    Do you mic your guitar to a amp or go direct mostly, Yes I love Studio One 3.

      +Marcus Miles little of both. Mic guitar amps and record "direct" through my Avid 11Rack
