What are the sizes of this studio? I'm going to build my own studio in my garden with the mixing room separate from the recording room. For now the mixing room is gonna be 12 feet long and 4,9 feet wide. You think this is enough?
one of the things I love about you, Graham, is your transparency and your down to earth approach to things. You've made a big impact in some of us here regarding music mixing and creation. Blessings, brother.
sweliam1 I would do a Focusrite interface, but I wouldn't do the ISA preamps. Everybody I know say they suck. I was going to get one, but got the Warm Audio Tone Beast instead... Soooooo happy I did. Best preamp out there under a thousand bucks without a question!!!! They had a shootout with it and an Avalon 737, and the Tone Beast had MORE POSITIVE FEEDBACK!!!!! I'm CERTAINLY LOVING MINE!!!!!
+sweliam1 Exactly. With the possible exception of the Neumann mic, most of Graham's gear falls under the budget to mid-priced category. Aynone who's spent more than five minutes watching Graham's vids knows his main message is "It ain't about the gear, it's the knowledge behind it". Yet you can go through these comments and find people still making value judgments about a certain brand, or they've "heard" from their friends that X is better than Y. To these folks, I just refer them to the infamous SOS mic preamp blind shootout (Oct 2012) where they basically concluded they couldn't reliably distinguish the cheap preamps from the expensive ones. Now, I'm not suggesting people should stick with budget gear because it won't make a difference. Of course, money buys better quality - it's just not the night and day difference that's going to launch anyone to the next sonic level. But hey, if you've got the bucks, go for the Manley or Neumann or whatever. We all do it. ;)
I love to see stuff like this. It's great to be reminded you don't necessarily need tens/hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of mics and gear you'll only touch a few times a year to be successful in the mixing industry.
Graham - Thank you for the tour of your studio! I love the in-depth explanation on routing and how you personally use each device! Not many people on YT do that for how extremely helpful it is.
TLM102 is amazing. Had mine for about 5 years, and have used it for years on vocals, guitars, violins, anything acoustic! And it's been all over international radio, tv, etc. Solid investment imo!
I have to say that everytime I watch one of your videos I learn so much, which I guess is the point! What I mean is your descriptions etc are easy to take in, no hi tech blah blah, just easy, logical and educational information. I love what you do, you're very inspiring and encouraging, so thank you. Now, I'm off to check out your Studio Gear Guide. Have a great Xmas 2016! See you in 2017.
One little tidbit in this accessible studio is that the Focusrite Clarett is one of the best high end audio interfaces I have ever heard! But of course, it costs a fraction of a lot of what is comparable from other brands. So in that sense, it is still a good value. You get a lot more than what you pay for.
Thanks so much for the tour, Graham. You always produce great-sounding recordings, so it is especially helpful to be able to see the set-up you use to make them happen. I am especially pleased to see that you are limited in space as I am and how you make that work. In 2017 I will be building my first totally-dedicated studio and I am looking forward to putting much of your great advice into practice. Happy holidays and another prosperous new year!
Graham , thank you for being a great support and information guide to us all.. A Great holiday and a Blessed New Year ... Looking forward to your continued guidance
I love Graham's work, but those corner and wall panels are waaayy thinner than what I was expecting him to use. All in all it doesn't matter too much, so long as he can get good results due to being accustomed to the room himself.
Last week I went to a men's dinner at a local church. Ran live sound (side note, the new Mesa Boogie Triple Crown is amazing. Put a mic on it, and did nothing to the sound with the eq. Beautiful amp) but the point of the sermon was about being meek. Graham, the way you talk about things like not upgrading your Mac if it is working just fine is humbling. Understand what you are saying about expensive and inexpensive gear. A lot of people buy only expensive gear because the price tag justifies it for them. More people need to pay attention to your videos instead of the eye candy videos of other Producer/Engineers. Thanks for your videos and words. You're a life saver...and someone for the young bucks to actually look up to for this line of work/hobby.
Graham , Wishing you the best with the studio ! That gas water heater needs air in that closet, Ad an outside vent if it does not have one (for your safety) Also a C.O detector in the studio .
I tried the ball mouse too. Cant do it. I use the trackpad. I also buy refurb macs. I have the 2012 quad mini with 16 ram, 2.5ghz, and two ssds in raid0. Love it. Awesome setup, thanks for sharing.
Nice set up, I recently got a command 8 control surface and I luv it, I was mixing with a mouse for years.... Now I don't see myself going back to that.
Love the Studio Graham! I have a Focusrite L. Pro 56...really would want to upgrade to the "Red Baby". It must be fantastic with the Thunderb technology
Thank you for doing this video. I have been looking to build a studio for years and would look at other peoples examples and they would have dozens of components and it would always look overwhelming.
This is a very nice home studio. The desk and your rack gear is organized beautifully! I would LOVE to have an Argosy someday. I was glad to see you using some Behringer gear too, love my old B-2 Pro!
Hey Graham, I was just wondering why you didn't include Reaper in your DAW recommendations. It's a $60 (after a very long trial), fully-featured and popular software among budget studio owners. I use it every day and I love it. It's very customizable and easy to use.
+Andrew Forbes 100% agree. Reaper is super easy to learn. At the same time, it is incredibly customizable and as complex as you want it to be. It should be the industry standard. It's that good.
Absolutely agree. I bought Reaper over a year ago and cannot believe how many features they pack into a $60 piece of software. And with all of the upgrades until the next major release included in the $60 purchase price, it's almost impossible to go wrong.
I watched this today - brilliant - so helpful and well explained! Then I downloaded your home studio gear guide - thank you... putting my Wishlist together now!!
Excellent room, thanks for the share. I also have Focusrite Octo and Liq 56 interface. But do have a connection problem with the ADAT firewire coming loose. Glad I have that reachable to tweak when light fiber gets disconnected. Merry Christmas and thanks for helping me on many of your tutorials..Cheer Graham.
Hi Graham, Your studio seems like a nice place to work. It's well thought out, with logical, practical equipment choices. Every business has to generate a profit in order to continue to exist. You've done a great job by not OVER investing in equipment that may not measurably contribute to the profitability of your business. I did like the black leather couch you used to have. Sweet! However, it seems you've put the space to better use. Thanks for sharing your ideas, Tom B
Thanks for showing us your upgraded studio. I have a similar setup with the Liquid 56 interface, ART patchbay. I kicked my ElevenRack to the curb in favor of the L6 Helix rack. Sonar Producer, Mackie MCU daw controller, ART Voice Channel & MPAII Pre's with basically, Avantone's full line of Mics (Ribbon, Tube, small and large condensers.) I also have that TLM 102 and am not overjoyed with it. I hear that the 103 is the way to go. [ U87 still on layaway.. :) ] I'm gonna grab the Single space Clarrett-8-pre when I build a new PC with Thunderbolt. I want that AIR and lower latency!
Hey Graham! It would be awesome if (like the one song in one month) you challenged yourself to make a song in one month using free recording softwares! For example, audacity. That would be a very interesting series !! Love your channel btw. It's inspired me to develop my own home studio
Aloha. I love your videos and am excited to take your workshop today. I have a question. Would you at all recommend the FOCUS RIGHT SCARLETT 2i2 3rd generation BUNDLE? Is the mike quality good enough in your opinion? THANK YOU for all you do!
Items on the Mac's Desktop takes up RAM. Also, if any of you know how to solder, you can just get a shitty speaker from the thriftstore (if it's a powered speaker it'll have an amplifier) just solder a TS cable to it. And you got yourself a Mono speaker. 🙌🏽
I love how you rep Focusrite. They are a great company as far as I am concerned. In addition to their products, I like their stand against human trafficking/slavery.

Hi Graham: Very nice studio set up. I am glad that I watched this because now I know the one thing that I personally won't be doing, what's that you say: "Setting Up A Recording Studio". Way to complicated from my point of view. I'll just have to stick with a very basic & simple home set up so that I can just record a guitar & voice. That's good enough for me......Thanks for posting this...................Steve

Eric Florez You know what I like more than my Focusrite ISA220 Mk II? KNAWLEDGE.
Eric Florez and guys I know you see a lot of gear here and that's not really why I'm here what I really wanted to show you was my book shelf

I was looking for a walkthrough like that all over the internet.... thanks again.
Gotta love your simplicity. You are a true inspiration of how not to live with the common gear acquisition syndrome.
Thanks for an amazing tour , I'm an independent hip-hop artist and my home studio is alright but it can be better thanks for showing this
Graham , thank you for being a great support and information guide to us all.. A Great holiday and a Blessed New Year ... Looking forward to your continued guidance

the bugera is such a good amp, like one of the cheapest tube amps, but so deadly sounding!
Graham you are an awesome human being.
I've read pretty much the same books- nice choices!

Mmmmm quite good choices..niw .i would be less expensive to buy API 500 series with all kind of pres comps,eq etc.,but i think you know it..
Wow... Nice setup, great studio...
thanks for talking thru the what and why this really helps newbies like me

pretty awesome setup sir . I have a scarlet 2i2 interface I love that thing ,I also wish to get a guitar in the future as well .
love the tour been following yiur work for the last 2 years very helpful
Hi Graham, you said you never buy your Macs new. Where do you get the refurbished/rebuilt ones you buy?
Items on the Mac's Desktop takes up RAM.
Also, if any of you know how to solder, you can just get a shitty speaker from the thriftstore (if it's a powered speaker it'll have an amplifier) just solder a TS cable to it. And you got yourself a Mono speaker. 🙌🏽
I love how you rep Focusrite. They are a great company as far as I am concerned. In addition to their products, I like their stand against human trafficking/slavery.
you would benefit with a AP patch bay, that way you can route your Focusrite compressors to different inputs.
I got a clarett 8 pre this christmas season!
I'd definitely put 16GB and an SSD in that mac. I did that to my 2012 Macbook Pro and it feels like a brand new machine.
Very nice setup and experience to with. We're noobies and just getting started, but very enthusiastic and trying to learn as much as we can. Focusrite 18i20 and Reaper with an older Mac pro tower and very nice large space. Appreciate your sharing your knowledge. 👍☺🎚
Great Video Graham. you have really set up this Channel so well. Cheers.
Really great tour! Thank You for sharing with us!
Man your videos are great to watch!
amazing home studio, lot's of great gear man, I wish I could free up more time to make music!
Great video. I like that you focus on what is needed to get the job done and not necessarily on the most expensive gear.
Could you do a diagram of how eveyrthing is connected? I would settle for a paper sketch.
Keep up the good work. I find your content very inspiring.

Great video Graham - thanks for sharing - I'll be downloading the guide now!
Nice studio, I plan on building a 10'x20' shed which I plan on turning into a music studio. why'd you not go with a vocal booth?.
Cool tour Graham, thanks.
I could never mix well on the Rokits.
Went with the VXT 6s. My ears liked their mid range.
Love the Focusrite gear too. I've been using the Scarlett range for a while.
I have the first gen 18i8 now, fwiw.
Niceeeeee studio Graham. I actually have the same Modern Recording book and a few other Pro Tools literature as well. I was thinking about grabbing a focusrite ISA Two or an LA-610 to complement my Apollo 8 Quad because I've been strictly utilizing the unison preamp technology. I'm in deep thought but when I see a fellow peer rocking with a focusrite pre, it inspire me to go grab one to have in my rack. Thanks for sharing Graham!
Hey man, I might be wrong but the Clarett line ins goes in a part of the preamp circuitry before going to the converter. So you are doing preamp to preamp with the ISA. If you would have an external converter to going to the spdif of the Clarett, you would have a cleaner signal path and have the chance to hear what the ISA 220 really sounds like.. Nice setup otherwise ! ;)
thanks for the gear guide it helped me sooo much

It's great! I learned a lot. Thanks for doing what you do.
Informative information and genuinely presented, thanks!
Why you don't use the orange guitarrackamp as an Insert? Because you can change the settings after the recording and you don't use the cpu from your pc. Good video!
A lot of money a lot of work and you deserve it.
Bugera V5 🙃
I use one with my american fenders. Great for recording after stuffing a Jensen C8R in there.

What do you use to protect your gear from power surges etc?
Power conditioner, voltage regulator, UPS?
