  • Mushroom cultivation can be complex, but it can also be simple, easy and fun! This detailed, step-by-step video demonstrates how to grow your own organic mushrooms from scratch at home, without any special skills or equipment. It walks you through the whole process from start to finish.
    Take an in-depth look at how to incubate a liquid culture or spore syringe to make grain spawn, how to spawn mycelium to bulk substrate, how to fruit multiple flushes of mushrooms, and get lots of helpful tips and tricks for harvesting, preserving and storing your mushrooms. At the end, learn how to get the most out of your grow using a monotub.
    The process outlined in this video is designed for complete beginners, but doesn’t cut corners and allows you to learn and experience the same process that professional cultivators use. With a few successful grows under your belt, you’ll be a full-fledged mycologist in no time!
    This is Episode 1, which specifically covers dung-loving mushrooms. Stay tuned for Episode 2 on wood lovers.

    Also, the tip about the candle creating a rising column of heat under which is a small but fairly sterile environment -- that was completely new to me, thank you for sharing that! As a brand-new almost-mycologist, I've been devouring "mycology for beginners" videos over the past week, and none of them have mentioned that tip. I also really appreciate the explanation and tips regarding the substrate/grain mix ratio for your bags, because I'm thinking I might start with growing from bags before trying Monotubs. 1:1 ratio, got it!
    Thank you! Immediately subscribed!

    This is by far the best start to finish 'how to grow mushrooms' video I've seen! I've been growing mushrooms for a couple years, and yet got so drawn in by the way Paul presents this process that I was shocked by much I learned...including the magic chant...lol! I ordered a complete kit after watching the video (don't tell anyone at my house...every shelf is already covered with colonizing/spawning/fruiting tubs!), and it shipped before the ink was dry on my email! Love your mission, Paul - and the way you are 'colonizing' the world with your Spirit!

    Exilent comprehensive vidio the only hair I'm guna pick is about co2 and the fact that it does not sink out the bottom holes, it defuses due to Brounion motion and thermodynamics fresh air is pulled into the bottom holes as warm co2 rich humid air leaves out the top, the mycelium makes a small amount of heat, yes co2 is heavier than air but it does not stratofy in the tub it does not settle out, other than this what an amazing vidio. No boring long sections and everything need is shown and explained.

    Couple things to add/ critique, though I don't want to give sources because it's late at night and I'm lazy (feel free to correct me!):
    - Mycelium doesn't need light, light's only function in the growing process is giving the fruiting bodies a direction to grow towards, like a "grow upwards" sense. Mushrooms have been cultivated and fruited in complete darkness.
    - Side pinning is not caused by light reaching the sides. People who use liners for the purpose of blocking light from getting to the sides still get side pins. I believe the real reason people get side pins is because the mycelium sees that the fruiting conditions (like moisture) are better on the sides and bottom of the cake, deciding to fruit there as opposed to the more-dry top.
    - The initial casing layer (when you spawn to bulk in the video) is a good step to prevent contamination during cake colonization, but this is seen as more of a fake casing layer- not that it's a bad idea, but because an 'actual' casing layer is added after colonization and before fruiting conditions are set into place. This 'secondary' casing layer is used to achieve better fruiting conditions on the top, also so you can prevent side and bottom pinning.
    But really, from a fellow mushroom hobbyist, great video!! Really nice to see more of these full start to finish mushroom cultivation walkthrough videos.

    • @_fungaia
      @_fungaia  2 місяці тому

      You can certainly try it, but I don't think it's worth the trouble. Too much LC can actually over-saturate the grain, and at best it will save you a couple of days of incubation. Better to just make twice as much spawn!

    Would ortho-phthalaldehyde(OPA) work better than isopropyl alcohol(IPA) for mycology work? From what I can find, IPA doesn't kill spores very well and it can damage fungi. I've never used OPA before, but a cursory look made me wonder if it would be a better disinfectant to use for this purpose or not? IPA seems better than Iodine, ethanol, bleach, or hydrogen peroxide, but it would be nice to see a full review done.

      Keeping the bag in a humid environment will help keep it from drying out more, but it won't restore moisture that has already escaped. The best way to get more water into the mix will be to mist heavily when you spawn it into substrate.

    you should not dry them at room temperature but the highest temp of a food dehydrator.
    there are studies on this, but tldr, they are gonna lose a lot more potency by staying wet longer than with the heat, psilocybin doesn't really degrade under 125°C let alone the shy 70°C of a dehydrator.
    and the last thing you want is a mushroom that's not fully dried as it'll definitely not store well.
    i put mine for 24h at max temp in the dehydrator and they store forever and haven't noticed any meaningful potency loss.

    When I posted my original comment, I mentioned that I couldn't resist trying a Fungaia Cube Kit with True Blue Genetics culture, despite the fact that I had a 'colonizing closet' filled with 90 second rice bags, all-in-one grow bags from a variety of sources, as well as some PF tek mason jars. And wow...I am so glad I did...! Some of my original 'projects' had been colonizing for over a month when I inoculated the bag of grain that came with the cube kit on 14 FEB (that's right...I spent Valentine's Day with mycelium culture and rye berries...and Mushroom Music...try not to judge me too harshly...lol!). The bag was completely colonized less than two weeks later, and last night I made my first attempt at spawning to bulk in a monotub (more to follow on how things work out...). PS - in those two weeks, several of the all-in-one bags grew more mold than mycelium, so from now on, this is how I'm going to roll!

My second and third monotubs are in fruiting conditions now, will update again when I weigh those harvests. Thanks!

    • @davidstick9207
      @davidstick9207 2 місяці тому

      70% will not catch flame. However 90% will. Use 90% to flame utensils...but use 70% to clean surfaces. 70% does not evaporate as quickly as 90% allowing greater contact time for cleaning surfaces.

    • @AD-gi9zg
      @AD-gi9zg 2 місяці тому +1

      @@davidstick9207 I read your comment, took a spray bottle of 70% into another room, and sprayed it directly on a lighter flame, from 3 inches away (over the bathroom sink). It did burn. It was not as flammable as I had expected.
      I was able to extinguish the resultant alcohol flames easily on my hand and lighter. Nonetheless, I think there is a potential fire hazard in an enclosed space, particularly if that area had a lot of alcohol vapour in it.
      It's best to be cautious with 70% IPA and flame.

    • @davidstick9207
      @davidstick9207 2 місяці тому

      @AD-gi9zg I have worked in molecular labs all my life. I have a PhD. We have never had a fire with 70%. Take it for what that is. It is 140 proof. You can pour 100 proof whiskey in a pan and ignite it to deglaze it. It burns for 10...15 seconds. And it burns cool enough to put your hand in it and not get burned

    • @davidstick9207
      @davidstick9207 2 місяці тому

      @AD-gi9zg one thing I should be very clear about...so someone don't hurt themselves...no liquid...no solid...burns. It is the gases given off from heated liquids or solids that burn. Can you take a candle...pour 70% alcohol on the table and and dip that candle into the spilled alcohol and cause a fire? Yes. You can do that with 80 proof vodka too...which is 40% alcohol. But liquids don't burn. It is the atomized molecules of the alcohol that burns. If the concentration of the atomized alcohol molecules are not in a great enough concentration...they can not burn. In a hood...with the fan off...you can spray 70% to clean...have a candle burning...nothing happens because you don't have the concentration necessary for ignition. YOU CAN IF YOU SO SPRAY 90%. Most people playing with fungi...do not have hoods...they have HEPA filter blowing air...which disperses alcohol molecules. Even if you don't have that running...you are in a room. The molecules disperse so fast...they don't ignite. But they can with 90%.
      If people are worried...don't have a candle burning. But spraying your bag...or a paper towel...with 70%...even if the candle is right there...is not the issue one would think.

      @jennak.8541 2 місяці тому +2

      Um, well you're not the one eating it, so it shouldn't be an issue, right? Unless you can't even touch gluten.
      Haven't heard of that but if that's the case then the good news is that, if you wear gloves, your skin never actually comes into contact with the grains. Gluten free or not. But, of course, millet works great also for growing mushrooms. And relatively inexpensive. Especially if you opt to purchase a big bag of wild bird food from the garden section of your local big box or hardware store. 20 pounds of wild bird food will cost roughly $10 or $15 dollars.
