• We Went LIVE With A Sp...
Jes Kerr will be joining us on this live stream to impart some speaker knowledge you won't want to miss! Jes, the co-founder and designer of Kerr Acoustic range of speakers, will be answering questions you have on speaker design, how speakers work, and the colour of his pants.

Met Jes in Oslo about two weeks ago. Fantastic guy and really nice! And the speakers sound pristine. Probably the best floorstanding speakers I've ever heard.
My reminder button has been clicked, so looking forward to it.
Handy time conversion for those of us in Oriental parts: 1am Bangkok. 2am Singapore, KL:, HK and Manila.
Just wanted to say thank you for all your videos and say hello from Texas USA!
Dunno if this idea suits your livestream - probably more your diy get down and dirty with a soldering iron type video.
Finding and installing amplifiers into passive speakers making them active.
It would be a fun project.
For folks like me who have no decent amp but have a lovely pair of passive monitors (no I'm not mentioning brand :) Which I'd love to have as another pair of studio monitors.
Whaddyarekkon guys?
Saving the date! Floppy Cat feature wanted tho.
Would super cool to hear something about digital crossovers
I like speakers, but I’m too busy trying not to get fired from my day job to research this question.
So, given the ease with which speaker positioning can be well and truly F’d up, why are rear firing ports a thing?
Lots of love, me. (With a UK-sized house in which it’s impossible to get speakers away from the wall in any room.)
Is speaker design more a thing of intuition, building a prototype and then measuring if the intuition was right? Or does it start the full mathematical way, everything is calculated/simulated and building it for real is just the "trivial" last step?
YEAHHHHH!!!!! A livestream I'll be able to catch!!!!
Thought we’d change it up a bit for this very reason - not always possible for people to watch on a Sunday! Looking forward to seeing you there :)
@@PresentDayProduction looking forward to joining you guys!!!
Should I stand my speakers on concrete, and or put something on top, to minimise cabinet movement?
You know how sometimes there are topics you could ask a billion questions about, like, you've been wondering for ages about so many little details, but when the time comes, to actually ask some of them, you can't recall any...
I'll just try to remember as many of them as I can and add them to this comment, let's see how many we get! (Hopefully, I won't waffle on about stuff too much...)
-How important are amplifiers vs. the actual drivers and cabinet design?
-How do you voice a driver? Does it just happen when you design it with a certain basic concept in mind? (Say, Klaus Heinz's ART)
-How do you deal with a cabinet ringing? Do you just get the densest material with the lowest resonant frequency possible?
-How important is it to consider phase and how do you optimize for it?
-Why is a driver's phase response not linear, to begin with?
-What are your views on DSP based speaker design? Are the added conversion stages a big problem or just a minor consideration? (For example in Adam's new A-series and all of Eve's lineup if I'm not mistaken)
-Are you planning on making somewhat more 'budget friendly' speakers at any point in the future? How about active speakers?
-How important is the cabinet design/wouldn't it make more sense to put the drivers directly into the wall in professional control rooms?
-Why are there no speakers with single subwoofers for frequencies under ~120Hz (Integrated into one speaker). Since very low frequencies are omnidirectional that should work. Is it just not a consideration because sufficiently large monitors have large enough woofers anyways? If so, wouldn't having multiple 'subwoofers' at different places in the room cause more acoustical problems? (It might even be the opposite, I really don't know, but I find the concept intriguing)
-When is it more important to upgrade the monitors vs. improving the room acoustics?
-How low does a 'full range' system really need to go? I'm thinking ~40Hz for non-electronic music because of the kick drum and bass guitar. Anything below won't be audible for most consumers outside of using headphones anyway, so why not just listen to it on headphones...
That's a bunch of questions I could come up with on the spot, maybe there'll be more once I think about it a bit more, who knows? (Certainly not me right now, I'm way too tired). I hope I phrased everything in a somewhat intelligible way, (again, way too tired) if not feel free to comment. I am really looking forward to the live stream! Hopefully I can catch it!
Thanks for the wide variety of questions! Great effort! We’ll definitely pick some from here!
@@PresentDayProduction Thanks! I'm really looking forward to the replies, I just love the topic! Speaker design is really fascinating to me and I'm not going to miss my chance at asking someone questions about it, who really knows what they're talking about ;D Thanks for this great opportunity, brilliant content as always!
Looks like I will be on a lunch break, most likely.
Not sure if I can make the livestream BUT I have a quick question: Would you do the same DIY changes to the Kali IN-8 V2 speakers as you did with the Kali LP-8 speakers? They both seem to have the same "cheap as chips" front panel and I'm wondering if you think the IN-8 V2s would benefit from the same changes. Cheers and keep up the great entertaining informative vids!!! Gratitude!
What time VST is that?
What colour pants would Jes never wear?
One supposes that ‘Speaker Questions’ are the order order order of the day, then? (PDPMQs..?)
When the Earth’s magnetic poles reverse again (any time now..?) will it turn all speakers into microphones (& vice versa)?
Q: Why did the cannibal insist his girlfriend brought a small speaker to the restaurant? A: Tweeter.
Q: Why did the arsonist pour petrol on his tweeter then set it alight? A: He wanted to convert it into a ‘woofer’.
Q: Why did the home studio owner look at his bank statement and sigh wistfully? A: He’d just spent too much on bloody expensive speakers... and encountered his first reflection point.
Are we there yet?
Almost!
I'm not going to be able to make the live stream but I have a couple of questions I'd love to get answered.
Q; I have heard that big speakers are usually better than little speakers, if you didn't have to compromise on size due to market forces (shipping, manufacture, people not wanting colossal speakers in their living rooms etc). how big would you want your speakers and how many drivers would it use? Would you use a subwoofer or keep things in one box?
Q2; given that your speakers are rectangular boxes, how do you deal with edge diffraction?
Thanks!
Thanks for the questions - the livestream will be able to be replayed after the event, on our channel, so you can be sure to get the answers that way! :)
@@PresentDayProduction Great, looking forwards to it!
Is this the pre-announcement or the actual announcement? Expiring minds etc.
This is the announcement of a future announcement explaining how we will announce it
@@PresentDayProduction The tenterhooks will stay in place.
SPACESHIP WIZARD? he's building A SPACESHIP! Ok, seriously. Is there a way I can tell what kind of frequency even-ness I can expect from different materials? like x material is light in the 560 range, while strong in the 7500 range? How many vibrations per second does it take to launch a spaceship?
My wife's local WI group are always looking for different and interesting speakers....I'm sure they'd love your irreverent humour. What are your rates? ;)
The fee: two packs of biscuits!
@@PresentDayProduction Plain or choclit?
Choclit, for sure!
@@PresentDayProduction this is the correct answer! Obviously I am acting as your agent in this matter and hence will be taking most of the fee for myself and I definitely prefer choclit to plain!
Digestives with choclit are the winners, for sure
Ask the Lizard, nice.
Yay, still alive then, what a boring two weeks it has been.....
Apologies, it’s been so busy our end that we haven’t been able to keep up!
