  • Audient have just announced ORIA, the world's first dedicated interface for Dolby Atmos - and it ticks ALL the boxes! 16 analogue and digital outputs, expandability via ADAT and Dante, USB-C direct to your computer, dual headphone outputs, built in speaker and room calibration, bass management, down-mixes, direct connectivity with the Dolby Atmos Render, a volume control that works with analogue AND digital outputs, and the ability to monitor commercial mixes in 7.1.4 via Apple Music. This is the box we've been crying out for since we started our journey into Atmos two years ago, and we're so pleased it's Audient that got there first, and we have been privileged to be working with them on beta testing.
    Please note that this is our HONEST opinion of ORIA and that we haven not been financially compensated by Audient for either this video, or beta testing the product for them.

    I'm not going ATMOS, other than playing with binaural mixes, for fun, but that said, I think this is an affordable, while still not cheap piece of gear and if you don't need to hook up external recording gear or record many sources at once, may even replace your interface, nice.
    I'm not a big fan of immersive audio for music playback and even though I could afford the unit, after saving up a bit, selling my interface maybe, I would not. Needless to say, that I don't have a suitable speaker setup, or the budget at hand to buy a dozen good monitors.
    Long story short, interesting, I'll happily watch more videos about it, nevertheless and feel happy for those who waited for such a device.

    i LOVE This product.... but it may also be interesting for people who are already in the RME ecosystem to know that "most" of these things can be achieved with TotalMix out of the box - listen to commercial mixes - yes. Time align and EQ speakers - yes (although no direct import of sonarworks settings). Control all speakers with one knob - yes. The ORIA is a more elegant solution indeed., But if you already own an RME interface with enough IO, you get all this for FREE :) thanks guys - love the channel!

    • @nathanaeldavenport2251
      @nathanaeldavenport2251 3 місяці тому

      I’ve been considering this exact setup… but there currently is no all-in-one RME interface (like the UFX line) available with enough I/O for 7.1.4, without expanding the unit… and then it becomes significantly more costly than the Oria. If RME had a UFX with 12 analog outs and matching digital I/O, then we’d have a ballgame.

    • @mattrobertson1811
      @mattrobertson1811 3 місяці тому

      yes thats a good point... I use an RME Madiface USB with a Ferrofish A32 to get the extra analogue outs.... and I didn't mention that above sorry - and yes that is quite a bit more than the Oria. BUT, you do get all the other analogue IO with that setup which you may or may not need ;)@@nathanaeldavenport2251

    It's what I said I wanted to see before I thought about going Atmos.

    Dante then makes it very easy to ensure a low latency option also.

    Great video once again, and Mark just made my day when he made the ADAT (squeek) remark. It is in fact verry verry nice of Audient to listen to what the actually using group of consumers (producers, mixing engineers) had to say and made a pro grade audio interface that removes all the previously hassle. So finally Mark can work on his Atmos studio, congratulations man 🙂. James i get the impression your video skills are still improving. Verry nice transitions and animations. Congrats to you too. I probably will never get the money to build a proper atmos system but i like new technology and will stick arround just to learn how it is done, how it works, setting up, callibrating, all that stuff is very interesting :-). See you in the next one.

      At the moment we have a pair of subs running under the left and right as L+R bass extension (not LFE), and then two MORE 1x12” subs out of shot, low down in the centre, daisy chained running identical signals. So that’s the 1x LFE channel, just doubled up.

    Oh my f*cking gosh.............. Guys, think further than on this device it self: With Audient bringing a (relatively) affordable Dolby Atmos interface, it's only a matter of time for all the other brands to put similar products on the market, unless they wanna lose track and competitiveness. Competence should always be good for the end consumer.... meaning that little by little, the access to the Dolby Atmos market (as a profesional studio) will get cheaper, without compromising quality and features. Great news for us, audio gear consumers, and as always, great video. Thanks a lot for all the good work you guys do at PDP ❤

    Amazing device, my only wishlist's for it to be perfect for me would be to add MADI and at least 1 (if not more) HDMI 2.1 ports. That would make it literally perfect. I guess the HDMI ports may not make sense though if it's not able to decode ATMOS in the box?

    • @PresentDayProduction
      @PresentDayProduction  4 місяці тому +3

    Hmmm, I’m not sure that just because Dolby has invested heavily in a specific format translates to them being entitled to recoup their investment.
    Music is still largely consumed on portable devices and that’s not gonna change.
    Immersive home systems are truly few and far between.
    The standout elephant in the room is that this novelty format highlights how the industry of selling stuff has responded to the ease and convenience of producing music assets and it has found an audience in people prioritising format over creation.
    This Audient is likely the first in an oncoming wave of products that will simplify/reduce cost access to the novelty format, and I personally like the concept from this device kicking off this trend. No one needs it but somehow I doubt that is going to factor much! lol
    Progress in technology always has a phase of absurdity along the way, by the end of 2025 I’m guessing we will have many Oria class options vying for all the dosh no one actually needs to be spending but will trip over our own feet to spend. Great watch, thanks for the video

    Verry much awesome! So after getting the Sweet Water Creation Station computer this here interface I'll have to grab then. Yes mark if people are doing silly things like a guitar spinning arround your head I'm not down with that. But I am for making music in Atmos. People just have to rethink music. Now you can give the consumer all the multitracks. You just now have to think of your music as a real ambiance. As a live porformence around your listener. So where do you want each vocal where do you want each instrament? Now how much verb or not to use? Where do you want your listener to feel like they are listening to this song? Or album if the whole album.

Can we assume accessories include an 8-inch glowing white circle, to glue to the floor at the exact listening position... which, like a reverse burglar-alarm pressure-pad, can let out a piercing squeal should the listener dare to step ‘off’ it and out of the Atmos listening zone..?

To me atmos seems like virtual reality, at first everyone liked it but it ended up not being used. I think if you really like it you wouldn’t care investing in it but I think it will be an expensive investment. Maybe it’s gonna be a great thing but I doubt it. People need heating and food on the table, maybe would be nice to have an atmos system at the salvation army so people can enjoy it while they’re in line for their food stamps.

    The digital outs mean this will be perfect for a Atmos system say with your speakers.
    So it can be that high-end standard of conversation.
    The analogue outs for the speakers means you can but this for a cheaper monitor setup and have the option to upgrade the speakers later on, or add another form of Atmos system for better translation.
    My thoughts about the perils of translation with Atmos is how things will translate to these soundbar Atmos systems.
    As me always aim when mixing to translate to the most common HiFi setups, we do not mix with a ridiculous audiophile system in mind.
    The types soundbar systems where the bar has a insane amount of directional speakers with maybe 2 other rear speakers and a sub.
    I feel like this is where your cool ideas for movement could fall apart and it likely to be the most common consumer setup for home Atmos.
    I do wonder if this sort of focus in Atmos mixing is going to be what defines the Atmos hits.
    As mixing wise, the hits are those songs that sound good on everything.
    Currently, we all go "wow, look at all this room we have" but when this becomes a big consumer thing, it's going to be mostly these sort of simple Atmos soundbar setups most common in houses.
    I have been thinking of how to make a B Atmos monitor setup for this purpose.
    The hardest part is the fact that the soundbar Atmos setups rely on no acoustics and room reflections to work properly.
    So how would you simulate this without having to have a separate room you have to go to check this?...
    Is this thought I am having actually a important thing to worry about?
    I have no idea

    • @PresentDayProduction
      @PresentDayProduction  4 місяці тому

      At the moment, if you mix on a properly calibrated speaker system of at least a 7.1.4 spec then translation is pretty damn good. And already you can start to hear Atmos mixes on Apple Music that clearly have been mixed on headphones, or even stereo speakers! And the difference is night and day. And that’s the danger. Yes, you can mix on headphones, or a soundbar, but it likely won’t translate. Mix well on a good speaker system and it will. It translates to soundbars, headphones, even single multi speaker devices like the Amazon Echo. But mix Atmos on headphones and send me the ADM to master and we’re likely going to have to start again from scratch. But the consumer devices are improving pretty much week on week. But II, personally, do mix and master with people listening on high end audiophile systems very much in mind. If someone listens on a phone speaker then that’s their problem. I care about their listening experience no more than they do! Thanks for your comment, it’s an exciting time for music!

    @dragonstone6594 4 місяці тому

    Does it work as well in Windows as it does in MacOS? Like for listening to music and watching movies in Dolby Atmos?
    Also the price would be a lot easier to swallow if it was 32bit also, for recording. Which would make it future proof as well. But since it's 24bit only and €3K I'm very hesitant.

    • @PresentDayProduction
      @PresentDayProduction  4 місяці тому +1

      Windows support isn’t quite ready yet, but we will be testing it on a windows machine when it is. It’s unlikely you will be able to watch movies in Dolby Atmos using ORIA, and you can’t currently do that on Mac OS either (or use Tidal or Amazon music, as they require a hardware device with the Dolby decoder chip in it, such as an Apple TV). This would have been possible had ORIA featured an HDMI input, but that would add a lot to the cost of the unit, is a nightmare to implement as a format, and isn’t really the intended market for ORIA. You can get a consumer decoder with HDMI and XLR line outs for around £1500 (check out the Iota AVX range) that would be better suited for movies. As for 32bit? Again, recording isn’t the primary purpose of ORIA, but is a very useful feature to have.

And there are two separate sets of stereo outputs in addition to the Atmos outputs, so if you have a nice pair of stereo monitors and, say, a pair of NS10 as well, you can still keep those hooked up and switch between them. ORIA also acts as an excellent monitor controller. Or did you mean stereo hardware as in outboard? I don’t know many that are using outboard for Atmos mixes. They’re using that for the stereo mix and then printing stems to export for Atmos. Hope that helps!

    Thanks for the video! Their announcement email really got me excited! I have two questions as a follow up: 1. Do you still use the MC Pro for phase alignment or would that also be possible with the Orias Delay Function in the OS. 2. Is it possible to add more than 1 Sub? Thanks in advance! =)

    • @PresentDayProduction
      @PresentDayProduction  4 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for your comment! Yes, we still use the MC in our day to day work - as great as ORIA is, it can’t replace technology costing ten times as much! The Trinnov corrects phase over very many bands (around 72 I believe) on each speaker, whereas the time delay on ORIA is primarily for delaying speakers that are closer to you than others in the system, so you get a cohesive set of waveforms arriving at the listening position. But you can get pretty close using the manual settings in ORIA, and the cost of Trinnov really needs to complement a speaker system that costs many times more. But we have been looking for the perfect solution to plumb in between Mac and Trinnov. And this is it. It’s fantastic.
      You can daisy chain more than one sub to the LFE channel, but there is only one LFE channel. We have two subs for left and right that are daisy chained to the L/R channels, and two in series as dedicated LFE.

    I've always compared ATMOS to the Universal Studios-era 3D movies. At first, everyone goes nuts with the idea and gets way overboard with trying to point out how amazing the format is, (everything has to shoot OUT of the screen), until someone comes along and does it subtly (see: Avatar). Which is the same thing that happened with early stereo, too, come to think of it...but eventually everyone settles down and it gets WAY more "natural". We're getting there now with ATMOS and most likeky once we've all gotten used to it, it'll be a requirement.

      For is intended purpose, it doesn’t matter. There’s a ton of latency with the Dolby Atmos Renderer anyway. And anyone trying to overdub a shaker part mid way through an Atmos mix is going to have issues! But when used as a ‘standard’ audio interface using the built in mic pres, latency is negligible and no worse than any other interface on the market. Just don’t load the renderer while you’re doing it!

If the product isn't any good (I'm not saying it isn't - I haven't heard it), but the idea that a company is 'entitled' to make a profit is nonsense. Many formats have failed, some of them were very good I'll take it as red that Atmos is good, for the sake of argument, but having heard high resolution surround on music I'm not sure what Atmos can add? A bit of ambience? Meh. On movies and games I *completely* get it - that is where surround really comes into its own. I used to sell high end surround so I do know that it really adds to the experience in those mediums and I am sure processing has come a long way. For music I remain to be convinced it's anything other than gimmicky overkill esp. if the front channels are anything other than pure unadulterated 96/24. I'm not passing judgment until I've heard it at it's best, but please, don't say Dolby are entitled. It just makes you sound like someone who's been drinking the Kool-Aid.
