      Congratulations on the SOS review, gents! I appreciate that you take Phil Ward's feedback to heart and investigate if the DSP can be optimized further. Also, what's the "untidiness" around 7 KHz about? Is that an edge diffraction issue?

      Yes. I'm sure you blokes already know, but Erin Hardison @ Erin's Audio Corner has the Klippel NFS and has been using Klippel Analyzer products for driver & loudspeaker testing for well over 10 years. He has a very good relationship and rapport with the gentlemen at Klippel, as well as Purifi.
      He also has extensive experience with complete multi-way/multi-driver loudspeaker and subwoofer system tuning via high end multichannel DSP for over 10 years as well.
      He has interviews on his channel with the gentlemen at Klippel as well as Purifi, and has tested most of the Purifi drivers.
      For reference, I've been using both the 6.5" & 8" Purifi drivers as well as the BlieSMa T34B & T25B beryllium tweeters in my own high end DIY home & car audio systems for several years now with high end multi-channel DSP and amplification, and agree that they are perhaps the finest drivers that are publicly available.
      Of course, there are other professional facilities in the U.S. such as Warkwyn and Red Rock Acoustics who provide Klippel NFS and other loudspeaker and drive unit testing as well. There are facilities in the U.K. & E.U. that you are obviously aware of as well.
      Side note:
      My only reservations with your MUM-6 system when it's combined with the lower stand/bass cabinet module + swapping the upper 6.5" midwoofer for the BlieSMa dome midrange is the increased Center-to-Center spacing of the dome midrange relative to the tweeters when the adapter rings for the dome mids are installed, unless the adapter rings are designed with an offset mounting cutout which keeps the dome mid closer to the tweeter.
      With the increased C-t-C spacing between the dome mid and the tweeter, the crossover must be carefully considered as it will be difficult to achieve smooth and even vertical response and vertical directivity through the crossover region without encountering lobing/comb filtering effects when you are too far above or below the reference axis.
      Cheers

    Personally, I couldn't care less about tonal balance. We all have our room correction software anyway! (I use Acourate for example.) Why do we want a flat line in a space that doesn't exist anywhere in the real world? I prefer something that offers phase and stereo accuracy over everything else. Well done guys! Looking forward to getting a pair sometime.

    • @bbfoto7248
      @bbfoto7248 2 місяці тому

      @orphic-trench
      It's always best to start with an anechoically neutral, smooth, and flat response from the speaker system, especially in relation to providing for smooth and even horizontal & vertical Directivity. Note that that flat/neutral anechoic response does NOT equate to flat IN-ROOM response which should follow more closely to an accepted in-room target curve.
      The Directivity is most important (on-axis response/direct sound vs. off-axis response/reflections) because if the the on- & off-axis response isn't similar, when you try to use EQ to correct the On-Axis response, now the Off-Axis response will be off and not linear, and vice versa.
      But when you have smooth and even Directivity, the On-Axis AND Off-Axis response track Together and are very similar/linear, and this will allow you to EQ for your room and/or personal preferences without any non-linearities or frequency-dependent anomalies. Look up the ERDI (Early Reflections Directivity Index).
      This is the problem that the SOS reviewers picked up on in regards to the tonality/spectral balance issues, and is why Mark & James need to have the MUM monitors tested with Klippel's Near Field Scanner (NFS) in order to help properly address the issue.

    • @orphic-trench
      @orphic-trench Місяць тому

      @@TechnoAssassin-vx6zf It is never flat when you listen in an actual room in the real world. It doesn't matter how flat it is in an anechoic chamber. Plus, if you have DSP, then one more reason not to care. :)

    • @bbfoto7248
      @bbfoto7248 Місяць тому

      @@orphic-trench
      That's just it! ...You DO NOT want to have FLAT *IN-ROOM* RESPONSE!!!
      You want the speakers to have FLAT *ANECHOIC* RESPONSE. And if you reply saying, "Well, I don't listen to my speakers in an Anechoic Chamber, so it doesn't matter", you have simply failed to learn and understand why this is so important and you don't understand the principles of loudspeaker design and acoustic science.
      Speakers that are designed to measure "FLAT" as well as have very similar On-Axis & Off-Axis Frequency Response overall in an ANECHOIC environment will sound the most neutral & accurate (NOT FLAT!) in the Widest Variety of real-world listening environments.
      If you start out with Speakers that are already NOT reasonably FLAT in an Anechoic environment, OR if those speakers do not have Smooth & Even Directivity/Dispersion between all of the individual drivers, the more work it will take to correct them to provide good IN-ROOM response and you will have more trouble getting your mixes to translate.
      In addition, the image Focus & Placement will suffer and you will experience Frequency-Dependent image shifting/wandering and lack of pinpoint focus.
      Your In-Room response should at least somewhat follow a known in-room Target Curve which will allow for excellent translation across the board. Otherwise, some specific frequencies will tend to "Mask" detail and neutrality in other ranges.
      The "Flatter" and "Smoother" the ANECHOIC Frequency Response & Directivity is, the better they will actually sound In Your Room before resorting to Room Correction.
      IF the speakers exhibit poor Frequency Response AND/OR poor Directivity matching ANECHOICALLY, the less effective Room Correction or EQ will be because the Direct On-Axis FR will not match the Off-Axis FR...So, when you or your software/measurement mic try to correct for the On-Axis Response, it will then throw off the Off-Axis response, and you will be endlessly chasing your tail.
      Look up the 'Early Reflection Directivity Index" or "ERDI" for short.
      If you really want to learn more and understand why, pick up the latest edition of the AES publication by Dr. Floyd Toole, PhD., titled "Sound Reproduction: The Acoustics and Psychoacoustics of Loudspeakers and Rooms".
      Another industry standard reference is Vance Dickason's "Loudspeakers Design Cookbook".
      IF the speakers start out with Flat/Smooth/Neutral Frequency Response ANECHOICALLY, the easier it will be for room correction like Acourate to adjust them to both Your Room AND Personal Preferences.

I like everything about what you're doing at least conceptually...except that I don't really get on with ATCs and have no point of reference for how these would actually sound. I also think it's interesting that you guys seem to have subs in place but don't offer them. I get it, the -10dB point is only 26Hz and you need the LFE channel for Atmos. I would love to have a speaker with dual tweeters and a switch to select a more accurate and a more rolled off. I have a pair of 50 year old transmission line speakers with soft domes and old caps. They are not highly resolving anymore if they ever were but they are smooth. My parents have new BW speakers with very accurate treble and they resolve like crazy but also drive me crazy with bad source material. I would like to switch presentation depending on what I listen to and how.

    • @bbfoto7248
      @bbfoto7248 2 місяці тому

      @marcusm5127
      This could be and should be accomplished by using the existing single tweeter but simply adding a separate DSP preset with a more rolled-off HF response or negative high-shelf filter vs the neutral/accurate response. Most DSPs such as the units that Mark & James are employing in the MUM Monitors have anywhere from 2 to 4 programmable/switchable DSP presets or "tunes".
      The majority of professional active studio monitors already incorporate low frequency and high frequency +/- "trim" controls which typically apply a +/- 3dB High-Shelf or Low-Shelf Filter to increase or reduce the low-end or treble response.
      The better studio monitors have several increments for these controls, such at +/-1dB, +/-2dB, +/-3dB, as well as a similar wide-Q filter with the same settings for the midrange response.
      Using two tweeters would add non-linearities (and undesirable comb filtering if both tweeters are playing at the same time).

    • @PresentDayProduction
      @PresentDayProduction  2 місяці тому +1

      I’m not sure we’ll follow the two-tweeter idea, but just adding to the above comment that we have full user-definable parametric EQ onboard

  • @vilddyr
    @vilddyr 2 місяці тому +1

    Looks like you need to lower the tweeter level a couple of dB to start with. Remember all of us who asked for Klippel data from the get go? At least you finally came around - designing a modern monitor without anechoic data to support design decisions is just odd. That 5k dip in the FR is wrong and should not be there. Something inherently problematic with the baffle layout it would seem, but could be his measurement environment that creates a cancellation, though it is not likely.
    But no doubt you are offering bang for the buck, good job, we just need an MKII ;)

    • @bbfoto7248
      @bbfoto7248 2 місяці тому +1

      @vilddyr
      Yep. And Center-To-Center driver spacing, driver placement on baffle, and baffle step compensation are important considerations combined with the associated crossover implementation that I believe were overlooked in regards to overall amplitude response and especially smooth & even DIRECTIVITY matching between drive units.
      The Spinorama and ERDI data from the Klippel NFS measurements will reveal the issues in this regard, but as you mentioned, this should have been done during the development stage. Unfortunately, as relative noob "speaker designers" Mark & James didn't know what they didn't know.
      I would actually hold off on purchasing these (and I am) until this is sorted, as it will most likely require a new front baffle design with modified driver placement as well as significant crossover adjustments to account for the changes.
      I expect this to be an issue with the MUM-6 as well when the 6.5" midwoofer is swapped out for the Dome Midrange using the adapter ring when the MUM-6 is combined with the lower bass cabinet/module.

    I mean you say linear excursion, but from the footage, the cone's action is conducive to non-linear excursion. You can see how the cone looks tilted upon the action of the piston system. This is not good as it can cause the sound to become distorted - although I would presume the programme is being played back at a much louder volume than what the system is really intended to output?

    • @PresentDayProduction
      @PresentDayProduction  2 місяці тому

      I think this is actually part of the effect of the rolling shutter of our camera - when filming it under certain visual conditions it is indeed linear

    • @bbfoto7248
      @bbfoto7248 2 місяці тому +1

      @producermathew
      I assure you that this is just an effect of the rolling shutter effect of their video camera, just like watching the vibration/movement of the strings on an acoustic upright double bass in some videos.
      As the image is "scanned" by the video camera's digital sensor, the scanning starts at the top and proceeds line-by-line to the bottom of the sensor and image frame.
      Due to the time it takes for this scanning process to traverse from the top of the sensor or image frame to the bottom, during these few milliseconds in time, the cone has moved. For instance, when the scan from an individual frame starts, the cone may be in the inward position, but at the end of the scan, the cone may be in the outward position just a few milliseconds later.
      When all of these individual frames are viewed consecutively as a moving video, it gives the illusion that the cone is "tilted" or skewed during its excursion, when in fact it is just an artifact of how the image sensor in the video camera is capturing the image. ;) ...just as Mark or James stated. Look up "Rolling Shutter Effect".
      These drivers have been extensively tested by independent 3rd parties and proven to have among the best possible linear xmax and lowest distortion of any diaphragm/cone based speaker ever produced.
      I use both the Purifi 6.5" (7") PTT6.5 and 8" PTT8 drivers in my high-end DIY home and car audio systems with the best sound I've ever experienced using many of the best high-end drivers for years...Scanspeak Revelator/Illuminator, Accuton, Dynaudio Esotar, SB Acoustics, Audio-Technology, C-Quenze, etc.
      I assure you there are no issues with these drivers. The cone is moving in & out perfectly straight or linear. They are legit.

    Why do you claim using only the highest quality parts when you all the parts in reality it's a budget friendly approach? I don't see what is so special about some generic class D 250 watt module, a simple MDF box, those drivers with average magnet drive system, a simple cross-over ... there are hifi brands who even custom build their own drivers at this price point, quick example from my head would be the Børresen X1. This project attempts to fit a cost-value-approach with standard parts available on the market but there is nothing that makes them special. Loudspeakers at dealers are mostly sold with generous discounts with tons of competition, hardly the twice as expensive claim.
