A Microphone With AUTOFOCUS?

- One of the key challenges when recording the human voice, and when live streaming or podcasting, can be allowing the talent to express themselves freely whilst keeping them firmly on the microphone. Post processing can be difficult to deal with if someone is constantly changing their position on the microphone. Wouldn't it be great if we could have a microphone which had the equivalent of a modern camera's autofocus?
Now we have. Introducing the Lewitt RAY.

One HUGE use of this technology would be in dynamic mic in concerts and live performance. Imagine no more 10db fluctuation in singers volume every 2 seconds when performing and playing instruments at the same time.

I was just thinking back to when I became the producer to a hip hop group with my friends back in the day and suddenly thought how this should be the number one microphone to start with.
Even if a band.
As a fresh producer with very limited knowledge, the knowledge you do have I'd very likely to be ignored while everyone thinks they know best.
But, also, to get people to give their best performance when fresh to vocal performing, you can't really start telling then to stand this far, stop moving back and forth, don't get too close or far from the microphone until you're then doing a fresh take ever bar to two bars... let alone when you layer takes for it to remain similar in tone.
This will take away a pretty group destroying drama.
And can see this helping with fresh band singers too.
Everyone has practiced with passion and movement to get their confidence in their voice and suddenly their being told "stand still don't move".
Then by a developed understanding of song production and creation this would be very good for song creation at any level.
I always found back in the day, people's performance always got much better after the song had been fully created.
Lyrics become second nature, the vocalist then has some much more room for emotion and creativity and so better performances for really nailing the perfect takes.
This has remained a thing way down the line... maybe a much quicker process but still a process.
This mic would be great for just getting down the vocals with less thought to have something for your artist practice from.
I do wonder if this focus technology can be something you can attach to any mic at some point, with a processor between the XLR output on a mic and then a sensor and buttons you can attach to the body of a mic or maybe with a clip like a pop filter to position those to work best.
No idea how this us working though, not idea if it needs to be configured tightly with the capsule and tone of a mic to work.
For now, for production, I can see it being the perfect stress free ideas microphone.
The price point is pretty impressive really if it's a good sounding mic (which so far people seem to be saying it is) considering the focusing tech built in to it
It has the same capsule (and I suspect mostly the same electronics, except for the new tech) as Lewitt LCT 440, which has a MSRP of $269 (so 80$ cheaper than Ray) and, while a bit bright, sounds really good for its price.
I just bought Ray, and its sound quality is at a level where you don't need anything better for a home recording, and the Aura tech can potentially be a game changer for home recording. But it might be too early to make any conclusions
Nice technology, but for me gimmicky at best. Like Mark demonstrated, it may has some very good use in animated or uncontrolled situations though. So, thanks for showing, nice video and a fair review as always.
Should I ever need to record vocals, while fleeing the scene, I'll maybe come back to it :).

So, there's one good reason podcasters want to use a dynamic mic - though I don't understand why it needs to be the SM7B - they're in a drywall-cursed room with hardwood or tiled floors and often with the extremely loud fans of a struggling gaming pc right where they're sitting AND aircondition to keep them comfortable in their baseball hats, hoodies and cargo pants. What they need is (a brain but also) a microphone that doesn't catch any of the boomy room ambience or fans. The usual condencer microphones will of course catch all of that.
The right thing for them would probably the those weird mic capsules found in old telephones, walkie-talkies and UHS radios that are neither dynamic, condencer or ribbon

What a brilliant idea. I have to think a lot about this when broadcasting or recording my own voice or vocals as I can't see the mic (totally blind) so have to be really conscious of where I am in relation to it. I want one

All I can say is that the green/red thing doesnt make a lot of sense to me. It is surprising how many people are colour blind. Ironically the singer I work with is named Ray and is indeed colour blind and would have trouble with Ray the mic.

Hey .. Did folks notice some gain reduction kicking in when it shouldn't have? I noticed a least a couple, one at 6.02 and the other I thought was my Bluetooth headphones .. but no was the recorded audio
Any idea what may have caused that? Stray rays?
The "unity gain" distance when activating AURA is 30cm. If you are closer at that point, you will perceive a gain reduction, if you are further away, you'll perceive a boost. Hope that clarifies your question.
@@LEWITT-audio It was a little drop-out I was hearing, for half a second, dropping right down and coming back up again.. It didn't look like Mark had moved.
What tech does it use to judge distance? Could anything scattered in the room, finding it's way to the sensor, confuse it for a moment?

We use it on our live stream - it debuted last Sunday, but in secret as we were under NDA. We didn’t say we were using it

Maybe you could record a horn player or two. Saxophonists can move around a lot when they get into a deep jazz solo, and I can see this helping.

Very cool concept, though I'd probably want to test it rigorously before dropping it into my next voice over session. I wouldn't want it shifting in tone and gain too much when I make small movements.
I totally agree with the live streaming argument. Fuck the SM7B (sorry not sorry).
Valid point. We fine tuned the distance adjustments so it still sounds natural and is not over reactive to small movements. We think the results are very transparent and seamless allowing for natural sounding dynamics within the level and tone calibration.

if i compare the sound quality from your last video this new mic is horrible, sound like clipping. that is a huge drawback.

If you’ve heard Mark or Sam on our livestreams, this mic couldn’t have come at a better time 😂 I agree that mic technique IS important but no matter how many times I’ve hounded the other two about mic technique…
.. well I didn't watch the vid before writing that comment ( i then did watch) - for podcasting sounds good. I was thinking vocal mic technique and people like Bowie using their hands when singing to block plosives, utilising proximity effect on purpose, the practice of moving away and closer to compensate for having to push ones diaphragm to hit high notes or get growl in your throat etc etc ..
... but the vid wasn't really about that, I then discovered!
