  • To celebrate 100,000 subscribers, I've been playing Ryse: Son of Rome, which features a rather ludicrous plot, a baffling take on history, and some very unfair statements about Britain...

The only way I can explain Britain needing to be re-conquered and the barbarians invading Rome itself is that Nero ROYALLY fucked up during those extra 30 years of not being dead and the fall of rome is starting significantly ahead of schedule. Doesn't explain the chains or "King Oswald", though.

The microtransactions in the game are really not necessary. I don't think it was a good idea to implement them in the game but some people are ready to pay to get stuff a bit quicker, the developers knew it and took advantage of it. But again, you DON'T need to buy anything with real money, exept for the game itself obviously.

One of the things that constantly bugged me about this game was the combat and more specifically his swordplay. If I remember correctly, legionnaires were trained to hold their shield first and then use their swords to stab their enemies from behind the shield, and only in special circumstances where they to use a cutting or chopping motions. Here we see the main character constantly swinging his sword and flailing his shield out to the side, exactly the opposite to how a legionnaire would be trained

+Tom Savine Games often struggle with ancient warfare, because all good ancient warfare is based around discipline, standing together, effectively a strong defensive line that can slowly move forward and crush anything put in front of it, But that doesn't suit a game where you want one character to be a protagonist, and it doesn't work for films either - in 300, the Spartans often break out of the phalanx just to do some one-on-one fighting. The old TV Series Rome had a fairly food representation of what we think Roman fighting was actually like, in which Pullo acts a bit like Marius, and ends up in prison and whipped for his failure of discipline.

My brain is a weird jumble of noise. haha! When you said you were a classicist, brain sort of went... "Wait...Jon practices class discrimination?" but then after a minute I figured it out. haha!
    Story time:
I had something similar happen to me in my grade 10 (Sophmore year) English class in high school. We were reading Julius Caesar and the teacher explained that the "Falling Disease" was Epilepsy, and a student asked "But, why would having epilepsy keep you from being a ruler?" and I interjected, quite "know-it-all" like "Well, how are you suppose rule if you keep falling asleep all the time." There was a moment of silence then the teacher said, very firmly, "Amy, That's narcolepsy."

As a student currently taking a course in western world history through architecture, it gives me great solace hearing you point out all the historical inaccuracies in this game. Thank you, Jon, you are backing up my training with hard core evidence and knowlede! Plus, its super interesting hearing all this from a non-teacher perspective. Yay history!!!!

One reason I love you Jon is because of you being a classicist, another is your references to Doctor Who you make every once in a while. I'm glad I could be with you during the 100,000 sub milestone, Gratulatio!

Huh. I actually learned a lot about Roman history here. And I thought I was already well-versed. I also learned what classicists were, so there's that.
One thing I'd also like to point out: Marius is hilariously unskilled with a gladius. As far as I know, while it can be used for slashing, it was primarily a thrusting weapon, designed to do as much damage as possible to unarmoured flesh. And I'm pretty sure the only time Marius uses it for its intended purpose is in executions. Also, he's swinging an 18-inch blade like it's a damn claymore. You don't need to put your whole body into swings like that. It's a waste of energy, and, more importantly, movement. And spins... oh man, spins. Backs are such a tempting and easy-to-hit target. Why would you ever spin?
But, then again, the developers had little concern for historical accuracy, so why would they have concern for martial accuracy either?

That old video game staple of "Let's put exploding red barrels next to our minions" never made much sense, but at least you could assume it was full of weapons or fuel or something useful to the bad guys. But here . . .What the hell could they be using? Do they just need a LOT of oil for their lanterns?

Love the historical commentary, and would love to see more! I likes me some learnin' with my LP's.
So the game is pretty gorgeous, and looks like a kinda fun button masher. But WTF with Boudicca??? I mean, seriously, I don't understand why they made the choices they made with her. I suppose I should be pleased they didn't have her wearing nipple tassels as well. Like, the one bloody woman in the game, you could at least make her a full-fledged person. Gah.
