I've been watching your videos and enjoying them, I'm taking lessons at Prestige at Pdk, loving learning to fly the R22, keep it out of the bushes.

Thanks for the great comments brother and thanks for watching. It must be very cool flying in and out of PDK. It is a very busy airspace! I flew to Gwinnet this weekend and flew around St Mtn to avoid it, lol. How many hours do you have? I have about 75 and close to checkride and hopefully I will get scheduled soon. Stay safe and enjoy!!

@HeliPAPI I have 16 hours now, starting to hover decent, I took my discovery flight at Fulton ,but Al didn't show for my first hour so I found a guy named Domon Williams in Jasper and had 3 lessons with him and he was shot and killed by his business partner, keep it out of the bushes.

@@charlesbemus9611 Congrats on your hours and hovering(hardest part of flying helis imo). Wow, that is crazy about your instructor! I looked up the story and there is not much info. Not sure if you heard, Al died Sept '21. Final report is not out yet but pretty sure IMC conditions were a factor. Stay safe!!

I've heard Al set down 3 times before he flew it into the woods at a pretty high speed ,did you go to the Heli expo, I hD to work to pay for lessons, take care

Yeah I heard that too. I was pretty fortunate that the guy that trained Al came out of retirement to help the school afterward and his training style is similar to Al's. I did go to heli expo. The school gave students free passes. It was pretty awesome.

is it just me or was your air speed at almost zero on most of the inspection cct? I'd be very wary of doing that as you are basically in an OGE hover which requires additional power - into wind is possible, but as you orbit to a tail wind it is "not optimal" - You say your practicing a steep approach yet you're at almost 0kts in the inspection circuit and not on the approach. I also hope you had done your power check well before doing such a slow orbit. Perhaps you did a calc on MCP, etc on the field before depp, but always get into the habit of doing it as you are on long final or enroute to your landing zone. Maybe I'm reading your instruments wrong, but you should talk to your instructor and clarify what you need to be doing.

Thanks Bgills so much for watching and commenting. Yes you are correct, on our last high recon we drop from about 40 knots down to almost zero as I am setting up for an OGE hover just ahead of my landing spot. Wind speed had dropped to about 3-5 knots coming from the north. We were practicing autos earlier with higher winds, but the winds usually drop off later in the afternoon here. Wind was really not a factor except while turning crosswind at that slow speed, I had to be cautious on the pedals. The temp that day was around 10 Celsius and field elevation is about 1300 feet and we were well under 2200 pounds at that point with fuel burn. Looking at the Raven II OGE hover chart, we were well within limitations. My mcp for the day was a little over 22 inches with a 5 min takeoff of just over 25. You'll note that as I stop in the OGE hover at 00:43 my manifold pressure is right at about 22 inches which confirmed my earlier downwind power check at Vy. My approach does appear to be a vertical, zero speed descent, but I actually set up in front of my spot and did a very slow steep approach keeping my landing spot in sight. My instructor wanted me to maintain a very controlled descent rate and closure rate all the way down to the spot. You are also right about flying slow with a tail wind being very dangerous or not optimal. That happened to me very early in my training in an R22. The instructor very quickly took over the controls and pushed us forward and increased our speed before we actually started settling, but scared the crap out of me, lol. Again thanks for watching!! Also, I just subscribed to your channel, looking forward to seeing more of your posts. Fly safe my friend.
