I think you made a good choice by installing a 3000 watt inverter. You’re prepared for a possible power outage. You could power your refrigerator and quite a few other appliances. Your installation is clean and solid! Nice video! Thanks for posting!

The term 'gauge' references wires that are up to 1 AWG. The term 'aught' refers to wires that are 1/0 AWG or larger, with the “/0” part being called aught. For example, 1/0 AWG (0) is called “one aught” and 2/0 AWG (00) is called “two aught.

"Aught" is a term that is most often, I believe, used by the British. For example, the year 1904 is expressed as 19 "aught" 4. They don't say 19 "o" 4, as "o" is a letter of the alphabet.

I read the comments, you said you had a fuse or breaker at the battery, good deal! Looks like a nice clean install! I am sure there us a reason, but since you battery is on the drivers side, i would have tried to put the inverter on the drivers side too, but under the rear seat like you did, this would have shortened your cable run, which costs you less, if you dont need as much length of 4/0 cable, and DC is prone to voltage drop the farther you go from the source!!! But with 4/0 cable should not be a problem. After a certain wattage of inverter i think they suggest a 2nd battery. Most good inverters will warn, and shut down before you run your battery down too far. I am going to look if i have a port under my back seat like your truck has, i would like to have an inverter in my truck too. I am shocked your factory inverter wont charge your laptop, i have a little cigarette lighter inverter (175 watt maybe), and it charges my laptop, but you laptop may be more power hungry?

Was looking for a video showing a 3K PSW inverter, and that brand too. Decided to put one in my Hummer H2 for back up power as a portable generator. Figured I would definitely need to ditch the factory 144amp alternator for a 400 amp one like a Mechman or equivalent. Did that about 16 years ago with my old car audio system. Inverter install looks to be the same as a beefy car audio install. Big alternator, big OFC power/ground cables, quality battery, 500 amp battery isolator, and another battery running the inverter. Maybe even throw in a battery capacitor to handle any fluctuations. Your wires being 4/0 is basically "0000". They are fatty big boy wires. Would have used those on an Orion HCCA cheater amp back in the day for sure. Might have to run double 1/0 power and ground wires for my purpose. Great looking clean install! You got one sweet ride for a work truck!

Yep, gonna upgrade alternator, put dual fat wires to the isolator, the battery cap, then to a auxiliary battery with inline 250amp fuse block in-between on each. Auxiliary battery stays in the back in a secured plastic case near my current sub box. Really that's the only permanent part of the install. Doing this to 2 vehicles. Everything else is going to be fully portable from my vehicle to my wife's vehicle. I'm building custom jumper cables, quick connect mil-spec battery terminals with 25ft of power cable (still gotta take measurements from driveway to inside 2 homes where I can use at different locations depending on which house loses power. The inverter will be inside the house in a location near a kitchen or the breaker box. Run whatever from inside, leaving vehicle parked outside with tire boot locks to prevent theft while it's idling. This is strictly for storms/freezes/emergency power outage or camping/fishing/hunting scenarios. I've got gas generators at my house, parent's, inlaw's, etc., But this will be on top of that. Besides my gas generators are loud as hell, announces to the neighborhood your out of power but have a gas generator for everyone to come and steal. Just want a fully portable way to help power a house during an emergency. I'm usually called into work during a hurricane down here in Corpus Christi, Texas, so I want my wife's vehicle set up to go when needed when I'm not there.
I'm 49 now, but I was installing car systems for myself and friends from 1991-2007. I've wired many multi-amp systems, swapping alternators, and installing all the extras that help the system run at 14.4v as long as possible. Just never did an inverter before. Looks like a subwoofer amp to me.😂

I too have the dual alternators on my F250 producing 397 amps. I contacted Ford asking them some tech questions and one was asking what max size inverter could be installed. They responded by saying they don't advise on size, types etc. and to calculate all the installed equipment to ensure you have enough remaining to power the inverter or something like that. They did say that they recommend no more than 50 amps to power the inverter on a vehicle with dual alternators.

Beautiful job on the install! Seems like your beating yourself up over the unit. It came out great! I wouldn’t have went with anything less than a 2500 watt. 2400 watts continuous is a full 120V 20 amp outlet, that’s what ,this way you can use a heavy duty grinder , sump pump ,120v air compressor or anything else that plugs in with out fear of it not having the surge capacity. If your going to add batteries , I prefer the group 31 OTR truck batteries for running big draw items.

Couple Oddessy Extremes AGM and a 400 Amp Mechman ( I assume you have 2 alternators, just replace the one near drivers side) Your good to go. The 4/0 wire is perfect, guys running higher wattage for subs us that or less. The inverter has overheat protection and the duty cycle will shut off if to hot. Also not sure I saw a fuse block for that 4/0 near the battery. 300 amp fuse block encase that cable get cut. You could also run 4/0 power cable from battery to alternator to replace the factory power cable.

Did you consider installing it in a weather guard tool box in the bed and using soow or sjo wire to bring some outlets into the cab and install plugs after your drill a small 3/8 hole through the floor plug and add a grommet? This way you can still have the underwear storage and have extensions leads under the seat for hook up without actually having that refrigerator sized inverter under the seat. That remote wire look like phone wire if I was seeing it correct which makes me think it’s a signal only and not for load

Looks good, but if you want any input…….
The manual for the inverter specs 10” clearance on all sides. It realistic but you’re likely getting hot if you run it with the seat down.
    - really wold be better to separate the wires coming off the battery better. That positive we’re going forward crosses very close to the negative cable below it.
How has it been working out?
I looked at the 2000 and 3000 and decided to go with the 1000 for my truck bed (covered) to keep the wires to 2 AWG for a 15 ft run at up to 160amps peak

    • @DS-TRUCKS
      @DS-TRUCKS  Рік тому +1

It's worked really good. But I usually use 35 - 50 percent capacity so it's good a dissipating heat. If I push it closer to it's capacity I open up the seat and keep an eye on Things. It still runs pretty cool No matter what I throw in it.

Usually yes you ground to frame. However many cars and trucks, from factory don’t have the best grounding, especially when installing heavy amperage aftermarket equipment. It’s not uncommon for installers to use whichever way provided a better ground(less voltage drop/resistance) so if running a ground to the battery proves less voltage drop, run it.. if it doesn’t, waste of wire and just ground it to body/frame.

You should research how to size wire. Basic ohms law. Take your watts (3,000 in your case) , divide by your voltage (12v) and this will give you your amps which is 250amps. From there you can look up wire size charts and select the type of wire and this will tell you your size. There are different types and temperature ratings of wire. Assuming you use a copper 125degree C wire you could have gotten way with installing a number 2AWG or number 1AWG conductor instead of using massive 4/0 AWG
