This is one of the strangest concepts for a sequel I've ever heard. But we either have to grant filmmakers creative risks or we need to stop complaining about how everything is samey and too safe and made for everyone. It might be a disaster but I'd rather a disaster than something boring.

I feel like a lot of people just didn't realize that the music was all going to be in their heads, but they're starting to get that now. In the first film, Joker often imagined the way a crowd would react and imagined himself on stage frequently, it makes sense that if he met someone with a shared madness, that that person would influence his delusions. My suspicion has always been that the "music" is Harley's version of what "the stand up" was to Arthur in the first film.

Maybe this is 5 years after the events of “Joker” (2019) and she was a psychiatrist or intern in grad school when Joker was locked up. She turned, got put in Arkham. So now, we are just seeing it from where she’s locked up. That’s where the movie starts. Or, maybe she is just a patient and they changed the backstory. My point is, we don’t know until we see it. This makes sense, I think you just didn’t get the first film.

The funniest thing of all, that wasn’t Joker’s origin story.
He’s just telling a “story” to the psychiatrist and then killed her that the end to escape, so we still don’t have origin story for this Joker.
It’s classic Joker telling different stories to people so they would feel bad for him but when you realized he’s making it up, it’s already too late.
It feels like they’re gonna do the same thing again but from Harley’s perspective.

The jokers character in that comic was a normal guy with a family but he’s a failed comedian and one day he gets boo-ed off stage his kid is embarrassed by him and his wife hates him. The best part it's that they don't follow the same predictable comic story, they created a new universe with unexpected origins. Plus I can't imagine any other actress more than Gaga as talented as her to do the acting and singing part.

I’m still confused as to why people are upset that there will be musical elements (won’t be a full musical) when in the source material for Harley Quinn (First introduced in BTAS) Harley & Joker regularly broke into musical numbers. Also, the first Joker movie had already introduced musical dance sequences and the film makers said this film is an expansion of that.

I oddly enough consider the impromptu song and dance of the Wall Street thug singing Send in the Clowns part of the musical themes. When Arthur gets the power, he sings and dances like that guy when he had the power. I also think of A Clockwork Orange homage.

I like how the trailer has us wondering if Gaga's character is an imaginary girlfriend, another sign of Arthur's further descent into madness, while also playing off qualities we associate with the "classic" Joker, only it's all in his head, making it even more tragic. In this sense, the movie is less like Martin Scorsese and more like Terry Gilliam, who, in films like "Brazil", "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen", "The Fisher King" and "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" all featured characters who only found happiness by indulging their imaginations.

I can't wait! I'm so pumped. Loved the first one. As a big DC fan, I feel very excited for this compared to what we have gotten in recent years. As far as the changing of Harley's story, we will have to wait and see as after seeing the end of the first movie, we don't know what is real and what is not in these stories since it's from the Jokers mind. One thing I really like about the 1st movie is that I think he is in Arkham Asylum the whole movie telling a big ole' lie story which is the movie that we watch.
At the part when he is speaking to the social worker asking her for more medicine close to the beginning and she asks him how has he been doing since Arkham Asylum, when he flashes back and is pounding his head at Arkham Asylum against the wall, the clock is the SAME TIME as the one at the social workers office (also at the end he's finishing the story at Arkham), so it kind of tells you there that what you are seeing isn't real which is soooooo cool. I think a lot of what we see in the sequel won't be real, in the same vein the first movie was mostly made up in his mind.

I'm very intrigued by how little they showed. It seems most evident that the music probably takes place in his mind. But I also wouldn't be surprised if Harley is, in fact, a psychiatrist who is using music therapy while posing as a fellow inmate to gain his trust. The one scene where she's walking the stairs by herself out of Arkham Asylum seems unusual for someone who would be committed, and she isn't accompanied by Arthur at that point. Meaning she could be on her own and starting to fall for him at that point by revisiting places from his past, like the stairs.

  • @ravenstalons154

A few things to take into consideration:
Trailers are notoriously shot out of sequence, so something like the lipstick scene could be at the beginning of the movie, where she has started to treat him and now is starting to fall for him and heading towards her break, leading into what we see in the rest of the trailer.
Hate to say it, but if the only thing that makes this a "musical" is the music and you are nauseated by that then you really shouldn't like The Crow (one of my favorite movies, too!) either as the majority of the movie has an amazing, badass music soundtrack and by reason should be a "musical".
The umbrella scene voice over specifically has a guy (gonna say the one guiding the music class) mention "We use music to make us whole, to balance the fractures within ourselves". That's just one of those things where music is a part of your soul or you're just following the beats.
If you haven't already, I hope one day that you fall in love with someone, so much, that you want to hold them close, dancing and want to sing your heart to them.
I believe that all has to do with the subtitle: folie à deux - A madness shared by two.
In The Crow, Shelly and Eric were similar in that they didn't have much but they had each other and Eric's music mirrored his feelings for her.
