  • Here's an insightful glimpse into a Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) group therapy session at Lukin Center. In this video, we demystify the journey of group therapy, beginning with the all-important first session.
The video starts by outlining informed consent confidentiality before kicking off with an icebreaker, "Two Truths and a Lie." This exercise is designed to alleviate initial apprehensions and foster a sense of camaraderie amongst the participants.
Our therapist, Jessica Colucci, emphasizes the importance of vulnerability as an essential component of the group therapy experience. As participants begin to open up, we move on to a mindfulness activity - a recurring practice over the subsequent twelve-week journey. Each participant selects an object from a box, and using their five senses, deeply describes the item. This activity serves as a grounding technique to refocus attention, helping manage anxiety and encourage presence in the moment.
Between sessions, we practice different mindfulness exercises, a process that participants find calming and focus-inducing. We also delve into emotional regulation, a skill that proves invaluable in everyday life. The aim is to acknowledge our emotions, understand their underlying urges, and develop healthier responses to them.
We explore common urges associated with emotions like fear, anger, sadness, shame, guilt, jealousy, and love. The group is encouraged to respond oppositely to their innate reaction, helping to reshape how we react to negative emotions. For instance, in the face of fear or anxiety, we advocate for confrontation rather than avoidance; with anger, we suggest kindness over aggression.
We conclude the session with a round-table discussion where each participant shares their emotions, initial reactions, and how they might attempt to respond in the opposite way.
This video offers a rare peek into a DBT group therapy session and the transformative power it holds. Join us on this journey as we uncover the tools and techniques to better emotional understanding and mindfulness.

Wow…this was very helpful in getting to visualize some opportunities for me to work on. I’ve never been in a group therapy session this authentic and vulnerable before. It depresses me that I haven’t experienced something like this, but I’m happy to see this and get some ideas for the future. Thank you

this was extremely helpful im currently in graduate school for MFT and for one of my courses we are taking group therapy and I wanted to see a visual presentation of how to initiate a therapy which is one of my biggest fear and this was so helpful and I have a better understanding how certain activities can help guide clients establishing comfort for the client to not only share but to be able to feel comfortable chime in at at the appropriate time

[The opposite actions against the initial responses to our emotion] 17:20
Fear: Attack -> Approach it in an assertive way
Anger: Attack -> Gently avoid/Take time to calm down/Be kind to the person
    Sadness:Withdraw or become isolate-> Get active/Approach it/Increase pleasant activities
Shame:Withdraw/attack others(to save face) -> apologize and repair the harm/prevent the same behavior in the future/forgive ourselves
Guilt:Overpromise that you won't commit the offense again but then you disclaim all responsibility you hide/Lower your head and beg for forgiveness -> stop begging for forgiveness and accept the consequences/repair the transgression and prevent the same behavior in the future
Jealousy: Accuse verbally/attempt to control/ act suspicious -> ??(Not mentioned in the video)
Love: say I love you/make an effor to spend time with the person/do what the other person wants -> ??(Not mentioned in the video)

I got a first appointment which I tought was going to be my first therapy session but instead they just wanted to hear my symptomes and then adviced group therapy instead. I feel hopeless looking at this because this is totally not what I had in mind. It sounds like so much bs to me. way to wavy/spritual.

Groups can harm people. Keeping people in groups they don’t feel safe can amount to manipulation. Analytic therapies that have no structure or goal can be horrendous. Group therapists have been indoctrinated to believe groups are beneficial and can be dangerously deaf to the fact that for some they can be traumatising. My experience was of a therapist sitting saying nothing. Then when she did talk it was so opaque as to be distressing. Over a year I never saw how it could ever help anyone. The experience was nothing like this video. There are different types of group therapy. Beware what you enter.

I’m amazed at how many times “you guys” is said when there are 3 women in the room. Are we moving a way from this? What does everyone think. “Feeling like everyone has an understanding of one another.”
“So , you guys think anything about what you guys have in common with you guys?”
    “Does everyone agree?”
