I didn't know until a while ago, I was really surprised.
That’s why I wanted to play it lol
I remember that day when I was a child. Really impressed by his entrance, really frightened by his HP bar that doesn't move at the beginning of the battle, really hyped by the music. When I finally beat him, I would like to discover his game and all the FF franchise. Sephiroth had become one of the greatest video games villain in my mind

I think the funniest part of all sephiroth battles is when you press the escape button when he summons a metor that destroyed all the planets in the solar system 🤣

I never realized how many times they remade the Sephiroth fight.
I remember finishing KH1 and looking through the journal for the name Sephiroth. I had seen his name floating around internet forums at the time and knew he was some important FF character. Sadly no mention of this "Sephiroth" so I assumed he just wasnt in the game.
Then I went to the Coliseum and picked the "???" challenge. There was something about the way he landed, his composure, his wing, the music which btw sounded NOTHING like any of the other tracks. I knew before the name appeared on the screen. Yeah... this is him... this is: Sephiroth.
And I think that's a key factor of the character regardless of the game he is in. We meme about this pear and what not but he really does fill you with a sense of despair.
The VA was awful tho haha

Kingdom Hearts 1 is what ultimately got me into FFVII. And it's all because of that fight against Sephiroth. That was the first time I'd ever seen him and I was in awe of his appearance.
Oh God, for a second in the Kingdom Hearts fight that he was gonna turn into his final form when he floated up into the air like that....that's something you NEVER wanna see in front of you.

Final Fantasy is basically the biggest and most popular JRPG of all time its popularity stems from its very iconic characters both heroes and villains and its basic trope as a game is always being ahead of the curve, final fantasy 7 as an example was the first 3d game released and was the first game on the PS1 which is why Cloud and Sephiroth are so iconic.
As for their reasoning in Smash besides their popularity is because the earlier games in final fantasy's history 1-6 were on the older nintendo consoles.

@@Yes-fy3yn Each installment is a different story so each installment is completely different from the next. So summaring the series is difficult.
But the game Cloud and Sephiroth are from its pretty easy. In a dystopian future an oppressive company is literally sucking the life force of the planet for their own nefarious purposes, Cloud a mercenary gets recruited by a group of Eco Terrorists Avalanche to sabatage this company Shinra in order to save the planet, however the plot thinkens when its discovered that Shinra was experimenting on genetic manipulation and an alien lifeforn Jenova that arrived on their planet hundreds of years ago, the result is Sephiroth a being who served Shinra until finding out the truth about his "Mother" decides to go on a rampage killing people.
There are better summaries but thats the gist of it.

@@ShowtimeLaw If that attack was real instead of being fake illusionary, That would result in a instant game over as Sephiroth would be a very challenging boss. Also players would be praying he doesn't use it while they throw everything they got at him desperately.
As far as we know, he can't actually do that (yet) or otherwise has a VERY good reason not to.
I just found out, the first time Sephiroth got his english voice was Kingdom Hearts 1 and it was Lance Bass! After that George Newbern (Superman from Justice League Unlimited) with KH2, the movie and the Dissidia series. Then Tyler Hoechiin for the remake, which I'm surprised they chose a complete different voice cast but glad they practically sound the same. I'd like to imagine George Newbern would reprise his voice role again for Smash.
His voice will only be in Japanese in Smash.

As someone who has played Crisis Core I can confirm that Sephiroth was the hardest boss in the game his fight didn't even feel like a fight and more of a survival test than a fight.

It is funny when you think about it. In a way it's video games you know he has to be beaten, yet every time he is beaten he doesn't seem to feel pain, and he's attitude almost comes off as if he isn't giving 100%? Like it's just a game. Least that's my opinion and observation.
