A friend of mine who was a deputy during the late 1950's and 60's told me that there was a reason why most law enforcement carried Smith and Wesson, smoother double action, you push cylinder release instead of pull,also he said that the internals were better and more reliable on the Smith.
I’ve also owned all three, and the GP100 is the most reliable. Python loses on price and quality per dollar, I had a barrel clocking issue after 1k ish rounds; 686 lost my trust due to skipping cylinders, I run my revolvers pretty fast and that’s the only gun requires you to get a aftermarket oversized cylinder stop and machined a deeper ramp to resolve the issue. Ruger on other hand, is rough when I first got it, but it’s the cheapest, and I had a bad batch of ammo, some overpressued cartridges, the Ruger took those like a champ.
I had to sell all my firearms after my divorce. You make me miss my 6" gp100. That one gun I'd get out of the safe and just look at. It ate everything I fed it and gave good accuracy.
The best gun? The Ruger GP100, the S&W 686 or Colt Python? That's easy. It's the Ruger Security-Six. All these guns are fantastic. But for just plain shooting, I like the 686. The S&W 686 has the best grips, hands down. The Python is narrow where it should be wide and wide where it should be narrow. But it's beautiful. The 686 is easy to shoot. And it's easy on the eyes. But if I'm a hunter, a camper, a hiker, I don't want an underlug barrel. Ounces mean a lot when carrying, and I'll take the Security-Six every time. When I get home and want to shoot, I'll take the Colt. Or the 686. But who wants to carry a gun where there's too much steel? And Ruger screwed the proverbial pooch on that one. --
You are right. I have a good collection of quality revolvers but when it comes to Ruger .357, I prefer the Security Six . My S&W 64-1 .38, out of the box beats all the aforementioned revolvers when it comes to trigger pull.
What an excellent review of the top three! I’ve got a GP100 that was purchased before the 2020 Python became available. At the time I agonized between it and the 586. It seems now I don’t need the Python but I really want one😁

The action slicks up better, imo, it has better sights from the factory, and it looks sooooo much better than the GP100. Just my opinion. I definitely own more S&Ws than Rugers, but I do like Rugers as well. I have a 150- series security six and a stainless police service six. Those were great guns.
The single Action option is NOT pointless! It's helpful with those long accurate shots. Now You might "Perfer" not use this function & that's fine. But Single Action is not pointless. Jus saying. Nice video though 👌🏻
I definitely agree with your assessment. The GP is one of my very favorite pieces in the safe and all I've done is drop the hammer spring weight by like two pounds. Anyone who can turn a screw can do a spring swap on one of these with almost no chance of breaking the damn thing. Do you know of anyone who does DAO conversions? I'm a little concerned about hammer weight if I just lop the spur off, I think a little bit of a hump welded on shaped like if you chop a Colt DS hammer might be a nice safety net. Two things keep me from giving the Colt a chance: I really don't like their grip curve, and my buddy got the absolute runaround from them with his Cobra that was broken for the better part of a year through various part failures. With the new management, I may factor that a little less, but I'm still wary
A very valid and good point. The internal design of the Ruger is much more simple and you can find replacement parts (trigger, hammer, springs) easily online. Although, the New Python is a lot stronger and simpler design than the original, it is impossible to find any replacement parts. The New Python is still touchy to make it all work and unless you really know what you are doing - DO NOT, DO NOT take it apart and tinker with it. You will fuck it up and have no way (besides send it back Colt...ha,ha,....Good luck!!!) to replace parts or fix it.
You give the S&W a better grade than for the Ruger for trigger pull out of the box, but you say that for S&W it is 15 pounds while being 14 for the ruger. So, shouldn’t the notes be the other way round?
Agreed. That just shows the reliability of this guy vidéo and judgment. He does not even check what he says before releasing the video. As to me, I own both a Python and a Ruger gp100. Out of the box, the trigger on the Python is indeed much better than that of the the Ruger, but my Ruger was showing a average 12.7 pounds DA trigger pull after about 500 rounds, which can be considered for me, as its true trigger pull. In addition, I disagree on saying that the single action feature does not make sense. That’s just your personal view. This is however a quite good comparison video.
@@Gunday_Brunch OR, you can just have both and people can use them however they like and shoot more accurately with a single action trigger pull? If you want to shoot fast with a shitty and heavy trigger you can always buy a DAO auto-loader and you get the positive of having more ammo AND no friends. Double action is inferior accuracy-wise, just useful for fast follow up shots on a revolver or restriking a primer. You pick which is more important to you.
@@Gunday_Brunch Being able to shoot as well in double action as single action is a good goal but not everybody has reached that goal. Single action capacity allows people to shoot reasonably accurately while still learning. Remember some might call using lighter springs a crutch for those who need to spend more time at the gym.
Love that you have the Match Champion. It deserves more attention in the gun world. I have one, also with the adjustable sights. The only mods I made are Altamont's small grips and night sights. The trigger is amazing. It's probably a bad habit but I love the way it stages - I can basically shoot it single action without ever touching the hammer. With the small grips it's easy to conceal carry, too.
When you say you put night sights on did you replace the rear adjustable sight and the front…. Or just the front sight ? I’m looking to get a gp100 or 686. My lgs just got a gp100 for 780 new, it’s the 4.2” with hogue grips and normal front blade. I want the fiber optic front they have on some, hi-Viz has a front sight for $27 but I was wondering if you had replaced the rear as well? Thanks

The Ruger really will hold up the best in the long run. Out of the box Ruger sucks compared to the other two. Once broken in the Ruger is simply a superior revolver due to it's lock-up and ability to stay timed. Also coil mainsprings are not prone to breakage. And, Ruger's one piece frame without any screws is a no brainer. Kinda like me! However I've killed two Smiths and a Taurus! My GP100'S, Redhawks and super Blackhawks can take it. Year after year! This ain't no Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge thing. Rugers really are a hell of a lot tougher!
I have all three, I like my Match Champion the best. All three are great. It's just a matter of personal preference. The Colt does have the better trigger and all 3 are beautiful examples of USA precision craftsmanship but for some reason I shoot the Match the best by a slight margin. No wrong choice here fellows! Single action fire is not pointless, most people can more accurately fire a revolver in with the hammer cocked better then double action pull. I like a lot of the other points you're making, but there is absolutely a reason for single action it's much easier to make accurate shots in single what's a light crisp trigger, for most shooters, than in double action, and that's just a objective truth, factual reality.
You're right that it's easier. It's a skill issue, so instead of relying on the crutch of single action, people should train harder so they don't need it

Yeah, it’s never gone away because people are lazy and getting good at double action requires dedication and skill. You’re right that people have ceilings, but those are entirely self-created in this case. But hey, if people are comfortable with a mediocre level of skill and prefer to rely on a crutch, that’s their choice.
So I've completely taken apart and worked on a fair amount of smith and wesson revolvers (specifically older Pinned and recessed K-Frames) and I never once had to use a special tool for the rebound slide/rebound spring, I just used a polymer flat punch and my first ever time was with a Phillips head screw driver. It's a little bit annoying to get it back in place under spring tension and lined up with the trigger, but not all that hard. Did they change something with newer Smiths so that you need to use in some fashion now?
I've owned and carried all 3. You really cant go wrong with any of them. For me the Python is probably the most difficult to master the trigger after living with S&W and Ruger triggers. I prefer the GP100 for combat use. The S&W and Colt are up to that task as well but they feel more range princess than warrior. The GP manufacturing is a little crude compared to Smith and Colt but once the action has been smoothed up it's an absolute beast.
For my hands, I've found that a solid high grip has reduced muzzle twitch on my 6" Python. I've modified my 2022 with Deer Hollow grips, a Wilson Combat gold bead blade with the rear sight on it's way. I've got over two grand in the gun and I'm a happy owner. The trigger is iron grade butter IMHO.
@justusbryant7366 Tell that to general Paton, i mean, he's dead but still lol. Handguns in general aren't a primary "combat" weapon but men badder and tougher than any today carried revolvers and they were definitely used in "combat". They arguably relied on them more than we do our handguns today.
Great video! Glad I watched it. I'm a S&W K-frame guy, owning a '76 6" Model 19 and mid-80s 2.5" Model 66. I was going to buy a new 4" 686 L-frame but instead bought the 4.25" Python last week. It was so awesome I just couldn't walk away. Dry firing, I prefer the S&W triggers but they've had decades to wear into silky smooth pull. I'm glad to hear your Python improved after 2k rounds. The old revolvers are still in excellent shape because ~95% of the ammo fired was 38 Special but the Python will get more 357 than they did. Now that two years have passed I expect the Python has picked up a point or two in your ratings because aftermarket holsters and sights (Wilson Combat) are now available. It's nice that Colt is back again thanks to CZ.
The sheer number of comments white knighting the SA trigger because they clearly refuse to do better is pretty telling. De-spur! all the defensive hammer guns!
I highly recommend doing a trigger job on Rugers. Having worked on Redhawks, GP100, SP101, Super Redhawks, they're easy to tune. Polish, shim, lighter springs, skeletonize hammer(if you dare, the hammers are really hard and if you ruin it, it goes back to Ruger, square 1). They can be reliably, consistently be taken to 8lbs in DA. My 357, 6 shot Redhawk sits at 7.8lbs average DA and 3.25lbs SA. Federal primers only in DA, it will fire others, but not 100%. Redhawks are the most finnicky with ignition.

Name one time where you'd "need" to shoot single action if you've master the DA pull. Caleb (in this video) shot a wildebeest at 60 yards with a 44 magnum double action and one-shotted it through the heart and lungs. How would SA have benefitted him?

The Ruger is MUCH better if you're a reloader. plus the trigger smoothes out after a few hundred dry fires, plus its cheaper in price. Warranties are the same. River is a better value and will last longer.
In my humble nobody opinion, from many years of owning and shooting revolvers, the Smith and Wesson model 15, combat masterpiece, is the finest revolver I ever fired.
That’s a good choice. One thing I like about the combat masterpiece is the lighter profiled barrel. I’ve always been a combat magnum guy, but the old combat masterpiece feels just about perfect for the k-frame. It’s lighter than the combat magnums, and balanced just right with that lighter barrel and lack of underlug.
@@leifhoklin2681 It will take plus P rounds no problem also, I personally think 38 special is an excellent round for self-defense, especially when it comes to over penetration which a 357 will give you .
@@georgehorner1578 .38 special is a fine cartridge. I’ll have to part ways with you about the point of over penetration. That depends upon the bullet design and velocity. Yes, a 158 grain soft point from a .357 magnum will absolutely over-penetrate. However, a modern 125 grain jhp likely won’t. The same holds true for .38 special. If you’re stoking your M15 with full power 158gr LSWCs, you’re asking for over-penetration. If you instead use a plus P 125gr jhp, you’ll likely get the expansion needed to prevent over-penetration. Personally, I really like Underwood’s 158 gr SWCHP +P load for .38 special. It’s pretty hot, but it gives enough velocity from my snubbies to guarantee expansion.
@@leifhoklin2681 I remember reading some articles way back about how for law enforcement, the 357 mag in a situation where there are a lot of people around was a problem as far as over penetration verses the 38, which can even over penetrate but not like the freight train 357 .
@@georgehorner1578 You’re right, but that was way back. Bullet technology has come a long, long way. You have to remember that when the .357 magnum first became popular with law enforcement, the 158 grain semi-jacketed soft point was the most popular bullet. The 125 grain, jacket hollow point came on the scene in the 1980s and solved the issue of over-penetration.
Great video liked it. My opinion differes from yours in that, the single action on these revolvers is far from useless. I have a well broken in 6" GP100 with a 2.2 pound single action trigger pull. I however shoot Buffalo Bore 180 grain hard cast and a hand load that equals that Buffalo Bore load. I also like the Grizzly 200 grain loads. All of these loads develop 800 ft lb or more muzzle energy out of my 6-in Ruger. They kick a bit more like my 44 magnums. For 357 magnums at that level of performance a good single action trigger pull is essential. The frame locking Ruger is definitely the best choice for regular use of full potential 357 magnum rounds.

@@Kylef7735You can use double action and make well placed shots for sure, even with heavy recoil. You said "single action was useless" That's not the case. I'll go out on a limb and speak for the majority of revolver people and say, your best groups are achieved using single action. A revolver hunter probably will their shot in single action as well. Especially the first shot. Facing some angry animal charging you'll probably instinctively use double action. But then again not always.
At 2:26-2:28, there occurs a concept of opposing forces when you check the trigger pull. You are pulling on the gage as it is attached TO the trigger with your left hand WHILE you push on the frame with your rough hand. A more accurate, and therefore better, method is to place the firearm in a vice to remove the human element imparted by a hand that would ordinary hold it and then just use one hand to test the trigger pull. Afterall when actually shooting a firearm, the support hand doesn’t push forward on the frame while the shooting hand pulls on the trigger. Realistically, the shooting hand pushes on the grip and the support hand pulls on the frame; effectively mimicking the functionality of a vice. The shooting finger actually SQUEEZES the trigger.
The forces aren't opposing though. If I push forward on the frame, the trigger pull gauge still measures the pressure exerted on the trigger the same as it would if I was pulling back on the trigger pull gauge.
@@Gunday_Brunch WHEN you push forward ON the frame, you still NEED to hold on to the case of the pull gage. Otherwise the action of you pushing on the frame would pull the entirety of the pull gage (case AND hook).☺️ By HOLDING on to the case of the pull gage, you the create opposing forces which MAY, invariably, render the reading on the pull gage somewhat inaccurate. Try placing the handgun frame on a bench vice to eliminate one aspect of the human element that YOU impart on this measurement.

Also, if one were considering a revolver for casual competition shooting, do you think the Python with speed loaders is a viable option? I know it will never be as fast as a 686 or GP100 with moon clips, but nobody does moon clips for the Colts.
I’m wanting to get my first center fire revolver In 357 to add to my collection. Im wanting a 4-5 inch barrel. I will only be target shooting for fun. Not competition. I have a lever gun in 357 and now that I’m loading for it I want to get a revolver. What would you recommend?
Ruger makes a great revolver that always seems to out produce S&W and Colt in terms of muzzle velocity and energy in any given load. With an accuracy second to none. I find the GP100 6" with a full under lug to be the sexiest iteration!
That's a tough question to answer objectively. I obviously really like Ruger revolvers, I currently own 6 GP100s and if you count the ones I sold I've owned at least 10. The GP100 when it's tuned like this is a lovely thing to shoot, but it's also a little picky about primers, whereas the factory Colt smashed every primer I put under the hammer. Before the ammo crisis when I could cherry pick what I shot, I would have said the GP100 all day every day. But now? I'd still probably go with the GP100, but the Colt is a lot closer now.
Is that smith a 6 or 7 shot? Also.. what grip do you have on that? Is that the 3”? Do you CCW the smith? If so, what aiwb holsters do you recommend? So for all the questions, just not too familiar with smith, always have been a ruger man, but you have me heavily intrigued!!! 😀

Kudos for an objective comparison and for a clear and concise explanation of all the caveats. I've had a couple of 686s in years past, and despite the bashing the newer Smiths get, the recent 686s I have handled had far superior trigger qualities than my -2 and -3 did, but if I were spending the coin on a revolver out of the box now, it would be a Python or an Anaconda or one of the variants. But I have generally gravitated towards autos, because as you also pointed out, they are generally more robust, and I have found that even the factories are hit or miss on being able to service their own revolvers.
Why do you say single action shooting a double action revolver is totally pointless? Some of my most memorable shots of any gun have been from single action 6" 357 magnum revolvers in single action mode. My friend was trying to hit a padlock like the old commercial at distance with an AR-15, but kept missing. I dropped to one knee and hit it dead center with my first try from my old Colt King Cobra, single action. Another time we were shooting empty cans on cinder block, when I saw that two cans were 3" apart. I told my friend to watch this shot, aimed to nick the cinder block directly in between the cans and knocked both cans clean off with a trick shot and no visible cinder block dust up with a GP100, single action. I could not have pulled these shots off in double action mode. Why do you want to deny me memories like that?
I have Pythons, but they are original 1960's vintage. That have the smoothest action of any wheel gun I've fired. Yes I'm one of those guys that doesn't want to shoot them anymore so I bought a GP100 target. It doesn't compare to the colts as far as a smooth trigger pull, but it is just as accurate, has 7 rounds, and built like a tank. You can shoot it all day and not miss a beat. Never had a misfire. Plus, If you run out of ammo the Ruger is just as deadly as a club.🤣
You can listen to some guy on You Tube or Jerry Miculek Listen to him on why he shoots S&W. Colt Python is a good gun but it falls into that category of being over hyped by so called experts
Good comprehensive review. I use a new model Colt Python as my EDC. The aftermarket support situation has improved since this video was made. My Python has Wilson Combat sights (the front sight is a fiber optic). I currently have six holsters for it. I use HKS speedloaders. I don’t anticipate needing anything else from the aftermarket for it.
New sub here. Question please,why do you say the single action option is pointless? Is it due to time required to cock it? If so, then why have sights? Will you have time to acquire them?

Caleb here - I'll admit that calling it pointless is a bit of hyperbole, but frankly I don't use single action on my revolvers. If I'm zeroing the sights I want to zero them using the "real world" trigger pull which is double action. And for target practice, same thing, I want to shoot targets the same way I'd shoot a match or a person

It's not entirely pointless. It's his opinion that he's pushing as an absolute fact and is very misinformation to those who may be less knowledgeable. Just because something may not be preferred by one does not mean it is pointless for all. And zeroing with single action makes far more sense than with double action as you're setting the point of impact of the round, not practicing your trigger control which has more likelyhood of being more inconsistent by a double action pull. We live in a day where people hear something that a UA-camr they like or an instructor says and they adopt the belief and regurgitate the information mindlessly. What he should have said was the "single action single action is entirely pointless to me specifically". But the confidence and conviction in the way he says it will help others who are less knowledgeable to mindlessly believe this as fact. You are correct in thinking for yourself and questioning others. Single action may not be preferred in most defensive situations compared to double action, as double action will be likely faster to fire for most. But there are times when using the single action function may be beneficial.
First off I've owned the revolvers you have featured and multiple examples of each, in the case of the Ruger both 357 Magnum and 44 Special. Back in the late 70's and early 80's I owned 2 Colt Pythons. Why you ask ? Both had great triggers and beautiful blueing but otherwise a revolver that drags or stop's up after a couple hundred rounds is worthless. My first Python was a complete POS, there I said it and that one came out of the custom shop. I traded it in and bought another, different gun, same story only that one had timing and forcing cone problems. I was done, I give the Python a big zero, I bought a Colt Trooper Mk lll after that and it was twice the revolver the Python was and I still have it but it's a big chunk. I wanted a carry piece so I picked up a Ruger Speed 6 used. What an awesome weapon, just ate up anything I put through it, never had to clean it and it was accurate with a great trigger. It was so awesome it led to the purchase of my two other GP100's. If you haven't guessed I'm a Ruger fan, I've got a bunch from SP101's to a SRH in 454. As for the Smith's, hard to beat. I've had and still have J frames, K's and L's in 357 and a 629 Classic. I just can't shake loose from them, only drawback is they are not as strong as the Rugers. I retired my M19, I did see a forcing cone crack and recessed firing pin bushings in others, it only gets fed reduced 357 and 38 Specials now but it has a very sweet trigger. I CCW my 642 all the time in my pocket, it just disappears and the 6" 686 is one of my most accurate revolvers. Except for the Python they are all great guns, my favorite has to be the Ruger GP100 in 44 Special followed by my 7 shot, 3" 357. Both have fantastic triggers, are very easy to work on with the removable trigger groups and the 44 is my most accurate revolver with the 357 and 686 tied in second place. IMHO honorable mention has to go to my 3" Taurus 685 Defender. A J Frame sized 6 shooter after 100 rounds it slicked right up, rated for as much +P ammo as you can feed it, it came with 2 sets of grips, a fiber optic front sight with a Tritium insert and at half the price of the Smith or Ruger. Something to consider especially for a first time buyer or for a nightstand gun. Anyone can shoot it.
@@Gunday_Brunch 5 times I drew my weapon out of my holster, 3 times I cocked the hammer back and that was enough to defused the situation, one I pointed it a someone to stop them from doing something they shouldn't have been doing and once I returned fire. I love DA revolvers.
I own all three but can't compare apples to apples because the first two are stock and my Python has been heavily modified. It had received a bull barrel, bobbed hammer, and trigger job already when I bought it in the eighties. I would guess the exquisite trigger is about 4 lbs and it is the most accurate revolver I have ever touched. I handloaded my own ammo to make it even better. I shot USPSA with it for 2 years and outshot many Smiths even with the minor scoring (38spl vs 45 acp) and slower reloads. (I used Safariland speedloaders, Smiths use full moon clips). Of the other two I like the trigger on the Ruger Match Champion better.
The Python vs GP100 vs 686 is like the never ending 9 mm vs 45 ACP argument. 40 years later and people are still comparing which one is "better." The Python, GP100 and 686 are all outstanding, but different in their own way. You cannot go wrong with either one. The New Python and GP100 are both strong as hell and you will never wear them out. It all comes down to your preferences and appearance. The New Python has a nicer, fancier finish and a smoother out of the box trigger than GP100, but that's the only major difference.
Listening to you comment on " working" on the revolvers brought back memories of a law enforcement shooting match at Nellis AFB 1975-76 Las Vegas. Most shooters were using heavily modified Smiths. We called them " space guns". Had a Yosemite Park shooting team shoot their S&W model 10, no sights, six inch barrels.
I would give the Colt a 2/10 on the internals. Theres so many moving parts inside which is why you get a smoother pull but removing parts and putting them back is a pain in the ass.
Lmao, way to get absolutely ratioed in the comments. I would put my 2 cents in but looks like a vast proportion of folks beat me too it. I get the entire premise of this video is opinion based, but maybe not pointing out a feature that |every| one of the firearms has (therefore it doesn’t matter) and thinking you know better than the manufacturers by suggesting said feature is pointless. I mean, to each their own; I like my first shot SA then the rest DA and couldn’t care what anyone had to say, but way to lose credibility with an unnecessary comment.
just two points of contention, first being you don't need the tool for the rebound slide many people use a bic pen to put it back into place without issue. Second the Colt is just about twice as expensive as the GP100 so if there was a price consideration one would expect it to be the best out of the box. As far as I am concerned I only have two of these pistols but I love my 686+ with a 6" barrel for all around pleasure to shoot & thank God we all have different tastes or we would be fighting over everything. Classic Pythons are beautiful guns to shoot, but they’re fragile and susceptible to timing issues in rapid double action. That’s one of the things I appreciate about the new Python is how tough it is

A friend of mine who was a deputy during the late 1950's and 60's told me that there was a reason why most law enforcement carried Smith and Wesson, smoother double action, you push cylinder release instead of pull,also he said that the internals were better and more reliable on the Smith.

I’ve also owned all three, and the GP100 is the most reliable. Python loses on price and quality per dollar, I had a barrel clocking issue after 1k ish rounds; 686 lost my trust due to skipping cylinders, I run my revolvers pretty fast and that’s the only gun requires you to get a aftermarket oversized cylinder stop and machined a deeper ramp to resolve the issue. Ruger on other hand, is rough when I first got it, but it’s the cheapest, and I had a bad batch of ammo, some overpressued cartridges, the Ruger took those like a champ.
I haven’t had a single solitary issue with mine…

I had to sell all my firearms after my divorce. You make me miss my 6" gp100. That one gun I'd get out of the safe and just look at. It ate everything I fed it and gave good accuracy.

The best gun? The Ruger GP100, the S&W 686 or Colt Python? That's easy. It's the Ruger Security-Six. All these guns are fantastic. But for just plain shooting, I like the 686. The S&W 686 has the best grips, hands down.
The Python is narrow where it should be wide and wide where it should be narrow. But it's beautiful. The 686 is easy to shoot. And it's easy on the eyes. But if I'm a hunter, a camper, a hiker, I don't want an underlug barrel. Ounces mean a lot when carrying, and I'll take the Security-Six every time.
When I get home and want to shoot, I'll take the Colt. Or the 686. But who wants to carry a gun where there's too much steel? And Ruger screwed the proverbial pooch on that one.

You are right. I have a good collection of quality revolvers but when it comes to Ruger .357, I prefer the Security Six . My S&W 64-1 .38, out of the box beats all the aforementioned revolvers when it comes to trigger pull.
A Pre-Lock S&W 686 is a great way to go if you can.

I definitely agree with your assessment. The GP is one of my very favorite pieces in the safe and all I've done is drop the hammer spring weight by like two pounds. Anyone who can turn a screw can do a spring swap on one of these with almost no chance of breaking the damn thing. Do you know of anyone who does DAO conversions? I'm a little concerned about hammer weight if I just lop the spur off, I think a little bit of a hump welded on shaped like if you chop a Colt DS hammer might be a nice safety net.
Two things keep me from giving the Colt a chance: I really don't like their grip curve, and my buddy got the absolute runaround from them with his Cobra that was broken for the better part of a year through various part failures. With the new management, I may factor that a little less, but I'm still wary
A very valid and good point. The internal design of the Ruger is much more simple and you can find replacement parts (trigger, hammer, springs) easily online. Although, the New Python is a lot stronger and simpler design than the original, it is impossible to find any replacement parts. The New Python is still touchy to make it all work and unless you really know what you are doing - DO NOT, DO NOT take it apart and tinker with it. You will fuck it up and have no way (besides send it back Colt...ha,ha,....Good luck!!!) to replace parts or fix it.

You give the S&W a better grade than for the Ruger for trigger pull out of the box, but you say that for S&W it is 15 pounds while being 14 for the ruger.

Agreed. That just shows the reliability of this guy vidéo and judgment. He does not even check what he says before releasing the video. As to me, I own both a Python and a Ruger gp100. Out of the box, the trigger on the Python is indeed much better than that of the the Ruger, but my Ruger was showing a average 12.7 pounds DA trigger pull after about 500 rounds, which can be considered for me, as its true trigger pull.
In addition, I disagree on saying that the single action feature does not make sense. That’s just your personal view.

If you want to shoot fast with a shitty and heavy trigger you can always buy a DAO auto-loader and you get the positive of having more ammo AND no friends. Single action capacity allows people to shoot reasonably accurately while still learning. Remember some might call using lighter springs a crutch for those who need to spend more time at the gym.
Love that you have the Match Champion. It deserves more attention in the gun world. I have one, also with the adjustable sights. The only mods I made are Altamont's small grips and night sights. The trigger is amazing. It's probably a bad habit but I love the way it stages - I can basically shoot it single action without ever touching the hammer. With the small grips it's easy to conceal carry, too.
When you say you put night sights on did you replace the rear adjustable sight and the front…. Or just the front sight ? I’m looking to get a gp100 or 686. My lgs just got a gp100 for 780 new, it’s the 4.2” with hogue grips and normal front blade. I want the fiber optic front they have on some, hi-Viz has a front sight for $27 but I was wondering if you had replaced the rear as well? Thanks

The Ruger really will hold up the best in the long run. Out of the box Ruger sucks compared to the other two. Once broken in the Ruger is simply a superior revolver due to it's lock-up and ability to stay timed. Also coil mainsprings are not prone to breakage. And, Ruger's one piece frame without any screws is a no brainer. Kinda like me! However I've killed two Smiths and a Taurus! My GP100'S, Redhawks and super Blackhawks can take it. Year after year! This ain't no Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge thing. Rugers really are a hell of a lot tougher!

I like a lot of the other points you're making, but there is absolutely a reason for single action it's much easier to make accurate shots in single what's a light crisp trigger, for most shooters, than in double action,

So I've completely taken apart and worked on a fair amount of smith and wesson revolvers (specifically older Pinned and recessed K-Frames) and I never once had to use a special tool for the rebound slide/rebound spring, I just used a polymer flat punch and my first ever time was with a Phillips head screw driver. It's a little bit annoying to get it back in place under spring tension and lined up with the trigger, but not all that hard.
Did they change something with newer Smiths so that you need to use in some fashion now?
No, you don't need the tool specifically. I've done it with a punch and screwdriver as well, but I find the tool makes it a lot easier.

I've owned and carried all 3. You really cant go wrong with any of them. For me the Python is probably the most difficult to master the trigger after living with S&W and Ruger triggers. I prefer the GP100 for combat use. The S&W and Colt are up to that task as well but they feel more range princess than warrior.
The GP manufacturing is a little crude compared to Smith and Colt but once the action has been smoothed up it's an absolute beast.
For my hands, I've found that a solid high grip has reduced muzzle twitch on my 6" Python. I've modified my 2022 with Deer Hollow grips, a Wilson Combat gold bead blade with the rear sight on it's way. I've got over two grand in the gun and I'm a happy owner. The trigger is iron grade butter IMHO.

Great video! Glad I watched it. I'm a S&W K-frame guy, owning a '76 6" Model 19 and mid-80s 2.5" Model 66. I was going to buy a new 4" 686 L-frame but instead bought the 4.25" Python last week. It was so awesome I just couldn't walk away. Dry firing, I prefer the S&W triggers but they've had decades to wear into silky smooth pull. I'm glad to hear your Python improved after 2k rounds. The old revolvers are still in excellent shape because ~95% of the ammo fired was 38 Special but the Python will get more 357 than they did.
Now that two years have passed I expect the Python has picked up a point or two in your ratings because aftermarket holsters and sights (Wilson Combat) are now available. It's nice that Colt is back again thanks to CZ.

Thankfully, Colt Python aftermarket accessories are starting to pop up. I just picked up a nice holster, speedloader, and Wilson sights.
I highly recommend doing a trigger job on Rugers. Having worked on Redhawks, GP100, SP101, Super Redhawks, they're easy to tune. Polish, shim, lighter springs, skeletonize hammer(if you dare, the hammers are really hard and if you ruin it, it goes back to Ruger, square 1). They can be reliably, consistently be taken to 8lbs in DA.
My 357, 6 shot Redhawk sits at 7.8lbs average DA and 3.25lbs SA. Federal primers only in DA, it will fire others, but not 100%. Redhawks are the most finnicky with ignition.

I have the Ruger and the Smith. They're both great, but the Smith is my favorite. The 686 is a little nicer to shoot. The trigger is just better.
The Ruger is MUCH better if you're a reloader. plus the trigger smoothes out after a few hundred dry fires, plus its cheaper in price. Warranties are the same. River is a better value and will last longer.
In my humble nobody opinion, from many years of owning and shooting revolvers, the Smith and Wesson model 15, combat masterpiece, is the finest revolver I ever fired.
That’s a good choice. One thing I like about the combat masterpiece is the lighter profiled barrel. I’ve always been a combat magnum guy, but the old combat masterpiece feels just about perfect for the k-frame. It’s lighter than the combat magnums, and balanced just right with that lighter barrel and lack of underlug.

@@georgehorner1578 .38 special is a fine cartridge. I’ll have to part ways with you about the point of over penetration. That depends upon the bullet design and velocity. Yes, a 158 grain soft point from a .357 magnum will absolutely over-penetrate. However, a modern 125 grain jhp likely won’t. The same holds true for .38 special. If you’re stoking your M15 with full power 158gr LSWCs, you’re asking for over-penetration. If you instead use a plus P 125gr jhp, you’ll likely get the expansion needed to prevent over-penetration. Personally, I really like Underwood’s 158 gr SWCHP +P load for .38 special. It’s pretty hot, but it gives enough velocity from my snubbies to guarantee expansion.
@@leifhoklin2681 I remember reading some articles way back about how for law enforcement, the 357 mag in a situation where there are a lot of people around was a problem as far as over penetration verses the 38, which can even over penetrate but not like the freight train 357 .

You have to remember that when the .357 magnum first became popular with law enforcement, the 158 grain semi-jacketed soft point was the most popular bullet. The 125 grain, jacket hollow point came on the scene in the 1980s and solved the issue of over-penetration.

Great video liked it. My opinion differes from yours in that, the single action on these revolvers is far from useless. I have a well broken in 6" GP100 with a 2.2 pound single action trigger pull.
I however shoot Buffalo Bore 180 grain hard cast and a hand load that equals that Buffalo Bore load. I also like the Grizzly 200 grain loads. All of these loads develop 800 ft lb or more muzzle energy out of my 6-in Ruger. They kick a bit more like my 44 magnums. For 357 magnums at that level of performance a good single action trigger pull is essential.
The frame locking Ruger is definitely the best choice for regular use of full potential 357 magnum rounds.

I'll go out on a limb and speak for the majority of revolver people and say, your best groups are achieved using single action. A revolver hunter probably will their shot in single action as well. Especially the first shot. Facing some angry animal charging you'll probably instinctively use double action. But then again not always.
At 2:26-2:28, there occurs a concept of opposing forces when you check the trigger pull. You are pulling on the gage as it is attached TO the trigger with your left hand WHILE you push on the frame with your rough hand.
A more accurate, and therefore better, method is to place the firearm in a vice to remove the human element imparted by a hand that would ordinary hold it and then just use one hand to test the trigger pull.
Afterall when actually shooting a firearm, the support hand doesn’t push forward on the frame while the shooting hand pulls on the trigger.
Realistically, the shooting hand pushes on the grip and the support hand pulls on the frame; effectively mimicking the functionality of a vice. The shooting finger actually SQUEEZES the trigger.
The forces aren't opposing though. If I push forward on the frame, the trigger pull gauge still measures the pressure exerted on the trigger the same as it would if I was pulling back on the trigger pull gauge.

WHEN you push forward ON the frame, you still NEED to hold on to the case of the pull gage. Otherwise the action of you pushing on the frame would pull the entirety of the pull gage (case AND hook).☺️ By HOLDING on to the case of the pull gage, you the create opposing forces which MAY, invariably, render the reading on the pull gage somewhat inaccurate.
Try placing the handgun frame on a bench vice to eliminate one aspect of the human element that YOU impart on this measurement.

Ruger makes a great revolver that always seems to out produce S&W and Colt in terms of muzzle velocity and energy in any given load. With an accuracy second to none. I find the GP100 6" with a full under lug to be the sexiest iteration!

That's a tough question to answer objectively. I obviously really like Ruger revolvers, I currently own 6 GP100s and if you count the ones I sold I've owned at least 10.
The GP100 when it's tuned like this is a lovely thing to shoot, but it's also a little picky about primers, whereas the factory Colt smashed every primer I put under the hammer. Before the ammo crisis when I could cherry pick what I shot, I would have said the GP100 all day every day. But now? I'd still probably go with the GP100, but the Colt is a lot closer now.
Is that smith a 6 or 7 shot? Also.. what grip do you have on that? Is that the 3”? Do you CCW the smith? If so, what aiwb holsters do you recommend? So for all the questions, just not too familiar with smith, always have been a ruger man, but you have me heavily intrigued!!! 😀

Kudos for an objective comparison and for a clear and concise explanation of all the caveats. I've had a couple of 686s in years past, and despite the bashing the newer Smiths get, the recent 686s I have handled had far superior trigger qualities than my -2 and -3 did, but if I were spending the coin on a revolver out of the box now, it would be a Python or an Anaconda or one of the variants. But I have generally gravitated towards autos, because as you also pointed out, they are generally more robust, and I have found that even the factories are hit or miss on being able to service their own revolvers.
No price category? Really? The python is twice as expensive as the GP100...
I bought my 686 in 1989. I sent it to the Smith & Wesson custom shop about five years latter. There's no better trigger.
Why do you say single action shooting a double action revolver is totally pointless? Some of my most memorable shots of any gun have been from single action 6" 357 magnum revolvers in single action mode. My friend was trying to hit a padlock like the old commercial at distance with an AR-15, but kept missing. I dropped to one knee and hit it dead center with my first try from my old Colt King Cobra, single action. Another time we were shooting empty cans on cinder block, when I saw that two cans were 3" apart. I told my friend to watch this shot, aimed to nick the cinder block directly in between the cans and knocked both cans clean off with a trick shot and no visible cinder block dust up with a GP100, single action. I could not have pulled these shots off in double action mode. Why do you want to deny me memories like that?
I have Pythons, but they are original 1960's vintage. That have the smoothest action of any wheel gun I've fired. Yes I'm one of those guys that doesn't want to shoot them anymore so I bought a GP100 target. It doesn't compare to the colts as far as a smooth trigger pull, but it is just as accurate, has 7 rounds, and built like a tank. You can shoot it all day and not miss a beat. Never had a misfire. Plus, If you run out of ammo the Ruger is just as deadly as a club.🤣

Good comprehensive review. I use a new model Colt Python as my EDC. The aftermarket support situation has improved since this video was made. My Python has Wilson Combat sights (the front sight is a fiber optic). I currently have six holsters for it. I use HKS speedloaders. I don’t anticipate needing anything else from the aftermarket for it.
Switch to safariland Comp 2 speedloaders for carry. They’re superior in every way.
New sub here. Question please,why do you say the single action option is pointless? Is it due to time required to cock it? If so, then why have sights? Will you have time to acquire them?

Another great video brother. It is now 2022 I am hoping the aftermarket is building for the colt. I’m really leaning toward buying one as I just can’t buy another S&W with a Hilary Hole. In switching to colt and Ruger for that reason.

Caleb here - I'll admit that calling it pointless is a bit of hyperbole, but frankly I don't use single action on my revolvers. If I'm zeroing the sights I want to zero them using the "real world" trigger pull which is double action. And for target practice, same thing, I want to shoot targets the same way I'd shoot a match or a person
@@Gunday_Brunch What kind of match? If I am doing silhouette, I am using single action. If it is steel challenge it's double action. I practice with both. Seems like you are pushing a false dilemma.
It's not entirely pointless. It's his opinion that he's pushing as an absolute fact and is very misinformation to those who may be less knowledgeable. Just because something may not be preferred by one does not mean it is pointless for all. And zeroing with single action makes far more sense than with double action as you're setting the point of impact of the round, not practicing your trigger control which has more likelyhood of being more inconsistent by a double action pull.
We live in a day where people hear something that a UA-camr they like or an instructor says and they adopt the belief and regurgitate the information mindlessly.
What he should have said was the "single action single action is entirely pointless to me specifically".
But the confidence and conviction in the way he says it will help others who are less knowledgeable to mindlessly believe this as fact.
You are correct in thinking for yourself and questioning others.
Single action may not be preferred in most defensive situations compared to double action, as double action will be likely faster to fire for most. But there are times when using the single action function may be beneficial.

First off I've owned the revolvers you have featured and multiple examples of each, in the case of the Ruger both 357 Magnum and 44 Special. Back in the late 70's and early 80's I owned 2 Colt Pythons. Why you ask ? Both had great triggers and beautiful blueing but otherwise a revolver that drags or stop's up after a couple hundred rounds is worthless. My first Python was a complete POS, there I said it and that one came out of the custom shop. I traded it in and bought another, different gun, same story only that one had timing and forcing cone problems. I was done, I give the Python a big zero, I bought a Colt Trooper Mk lll after that and it was twice the revolver the Python was and I still have it but it's a big chunk. I wanted a carry piece so I picked up a Ruger Speed 6 used. What an awesome weapon, just ate up anything I put through it, never had to clean it and it was accurate with a great trigger. It was so awesome it led to the purchase of my two other GP100's. If you haven't guessed I'm a Ruger fan, I've got a bunch from SP101's to a SRH in 454. As for the Smith's, hard to beat. I've had and still have J frames, K's and L's in 357 and a 629 Classic. I just can't shake loose from them, only drawback is they are not as strong as the Rugers. I retired my M19, I did see a forcing cone crack and recessed firing pin bushings in others, it only gets fed reduced 357 and 38 Specials now but it has a very sweet trigger. I CCW my 642 all the time in my pocket, it just disappears and the 6" 686 is one of my most accurate revolvers. Except for the Python they are all great guns, my favorite has to be the Ruger GP100 in 44 Special followed by my 7 shot, 3" 357. Both have fantastic triggers, are very easy to work on with the removable trigger groups and the 44 is my most accurate revolver with the 357 and 686 tied in second place. IMHO honorable mention has to go to my 3" Taurus 685 Defender. A J Frame sized 6 shooter after 100 rounds it slicked right up, rated for as much +P ammo as you can feed it, it came with 2 sets of grips, a fiber optic front sight with a Tritium insert and at half the price of the Smith or Ruger. Something to consider especially for a first time buyer or for a nightstand gun. Anyone can shoot it.

5 times I drew my weapon out of my holster, 3 times I cocked the hammer back and that was enough to defused the situation, one I pointed it a someone to stop them from doing something they shouldn't have been doing and once I returned fire.
I love DA revolvers.

I own all three but can't compare apples to apples because the first two are stock and my Python has been heavily modified. It had received a bull barrel, bobbed hammer, and trigger job already when I bought it in the eighties. I would guess the exquisite trigger is about 4 lbs and it is the most accurate revolver I have ever touched. I handloaded my own ammo to make it even better. I shot USPSA with it for 2 years and outshot many Smiths even with the minor scoring (38spl vs 45 acp) and slower reloads. (I used Safariland speedloaders, Smiths use full moon clips). Of the other two I like the trigger on the Ruger Match Champion better.
The Python vs GP100 vs 686 is like the never ending 9 mm vs 45 ACP argument. 40 years later and people are still comparing which one is "better." The Python, GP100 and 686 are all outstanding, but different in their own way. You cannot go wrong with either one. The New Python and GP100 are both strong as hell and you will never wear them out. It all comes down to your preferences and appearance. The New Python has a nicer, fancier finish and a smoother out of the box trigger than GP100, but that's the only major difference.
We all know the S & W 500 Mag is da King! These pesky toys…LOL ☺

Listening to you comment on " working" on the revolvers brought back memories of a law enforcement shooting match at Nellis AFB 1975-76 Las Vegas. Most shooters were using heavily modified Smiths. We called them " space guns". Had a Yosemite Park shooting team shoot their S&W model 10, no sights, six inch barrels.
I would give the Colt a 2/10 on the internals. Theres so many moving parts inside which is why you get a smoother pull but removing parts and putting them back is a pain in the ass.
Lmao, way to get absolutely ratioed in the comments. I would put my 2 cents in but looks like a vast proportion of folks beat me too it. I get the entire premise of this video is opinion based, but maybe not pointing out a feature that |every| one of the firearms has (therefore it doesn’t matter) and thinking you know better than the manufacturers by suggesting said feature is pointless. I mean, to each their own; I like my first shot SA then the rest DA and couldn’t care what anyone had to say, but way to lose credibility with an unnecessary comment.

I don't know if you realize this but you just put your two cents in and then some. Haha
just two points of contention, first being you don't need the tool for the rebound slide many people use a bic pen to put it back into place without issue. Second the Colt is just about twice as expensive as the GP100 so if there was a price consideration one would expect it to be the best out of the box. As far as I am concerned I only have two of these pistols but I love my 686+ with a 6" barrel for all around pleasure to shoot & thank God we all have different tastes or we would be fighting over everything. Nice video, just curious did you ever own or shoot the Older original Pythons & if you did which do you like better?
Classic Pythons are beautiful guns to shoot, but they’re fragile and susceptible to timing issues in rapid double action. That’s one of the things I appreciate about the new Python is how tough it is

You should see Jerry Miculek take the rebound springs on and off…………w a Bic Ink Pen! I cussed him. He laughs as he does it. He says 686. Me too, I have a PC edition. 4” rib barrel. Single action like none other, a legend. Has a stop bolt trigger. Non fluted Cyl. All hand tuned.
