This is the song that really made the band superstars. The whole Joshua album is really good. " see the stone set in your eyes, see the thorn twist in your side." Great lyrics.
I think he missed the meaning behind the lyrics on this one.
Yeah U2 already broke through before this, but this shattered all doubts
One Tree Hill is my favorite from this album.
Unforgettable Fire and War are what made them global superstars.
This was definitely my intro to U2 when it came out. I was 16. It didn’t take long to find Sunday Bloody Sunday though. Still, when I think of U2 this probably pops in my head first. Probably the cannon in d base part.
Jay doesn’t like U2. 5 songs into their U2 journey. You either get it or you don’t. This song is a masterpiece.😊❤️
J would much rather be watching football maybe with rap as halftime show.
Cap. He liked One and he enjoyed SBS too. Not everyone has to like all of their hits. He'd love Still Haven't Found
@@maximillianford9301 LOL...Nobody says you have to ...🙄
I wasn't that crazy about this song either. I always thought it was cheap emotion.- the dramatic vocals, the long chords... Prince said that he could write songs like this if he wanted to. On the other hand, I thought Achtung Baby was one of the greatest rock albums of all time.
@@Faltor895 this song has to be heard live to be fully appreciated. They extended the song, Edge shreds the guitar and Bono adds extra lyrics - it’s spine chilling when heard live
This is one of the best songs EVER WRITTEN! I agree with Amber! His vocals are so haunting ! I love Bono’s voice!
The whole album is a masterpiece.
Yes. You can play it and close your eyes and just feel it.
then they went crap!
To me this is a tired and boring album. Their earlier stuff is better
To me, this is one of the truly, great albums of the decade...
@@paulharrison6417 Nope, Achtung Baby is also one hell of the album
U2 + Gospel Choir singing "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For " is my favorite song of all time.
I was about to suggest that ! I feel like I’ve been to church every time I play it
That is a great performance
@@chrissynovful it's actually a gospel song 🎵 you're right! It's U2 taking you to church.
What about "Accidentally Kelly Street" by Frente
I spent my whole life looking and never found it, such a small thing to want in life, to be loved.
How do you not love this song.. like seriously.
this song so beautiful, pourin my tears down
By working at Walgreens long enough lol
More to the pont how can't you.
That guitar riff at the end could just go on forever. The Edge is a seriously underrated guitarist.
Criminally underrated!
Could not agree more, he's up there with the top echelon 🎸
The Edge had his trademark way of playing guitar. Everyone wanted to play like Eddie Van Halen. He wanted to be The Edge.
That's why i love either the Rattle and Hum version or Live in Paris version... the riff goes on and on, and the larry mullen hard hitting drums and Bono's Shine like a star snippet just all works together to make this masterpiece even better.
Not every song has to be 1000 beats per minute to be good. This is a great song
Agreed.
Exactly! I wonder if Jay gave it a couple more listens he might appreciate the greatness of this song.
@@analogblues No. If Stevie Nicks or Barry Gibb sang it, maybe 😂,
It’s 120 beats per minute.
"Where the Streets Have No Name" probably is the song that really makes you feel what life is.
That's my driving song - windows down on our long country roads.
@@jennhurl and THAT is how it makes you feel! Like driving really fast, windows down, wind in your hair, and like endless possibilities! Infinity...
Yes, the live video of them playing on the roof
Original video 🙌
Yes!!
Aw man! Y’all gotta do their song “Still haven’t found what I’m looking for.” MASSIVE hit like this one. Also, there’s a LIVE version of this one.. he pulls a girl out of the audience and they lay side by side on their backs..he’s beautifully singing and she’s mouthing the words. He’ll look over at her here and there.. Tears are streaming and you KNOW this girls heart is about to burst! AND she’ll never forget it..I wish I could remember the exact year and performance.. y’all REALLY should check it out- I’m sure plenty of folks in the comments will know the performance immediately- My memory ain’t what it used to be..🤦🏻♀️ ok, J just said it was just alright for him.. now you just gotta check out that SPECIFIC live performance 👆🏻with the girl onstage. And the bass line in “Still haven’t found what I’m looking” for is one I think you’ll both enjoy..J- The official video for it is really good as well.
Great song and video. My favorite part of the video is when Bono gets trolled by a kid wearing an Alarm t-shirt. A band they toured together with and very good friends of theirs. Reminds me of Mike Peters of the Alarm trolling them at Live Aid with a flag during the song "Bad."
boston 2001. awesome vid.
I don't think they know what a hit is.
I agree I love that song.❤️✌️🌼
I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For is in actuality a gospel hymn. Beautiful song.
U2 is a band that has evolved throughout their history which has spanned decades. Some of the songs you should check out are "Gloria", "Pride (In The Name Of Love)", "New Years Day", "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For". The list goes on and on!
Gloria!
This is one of their most iconic songs, one of my top favorite of theirs for sure. Thank you Amber for really appreciating this gem of a song. “Pride (In The Name Of Love)” and “Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” are some of my other favorites.
You just mentioned both of U2's absolute BEST songs!
Pride is what I remember that really put U2 on the map.
I agree 100% with these two selections. I would add Mysterious Ways for Jay to have a more energetic song to jam with, as well as Where the Streets Have No Name for the same reason.
I still havent found from Rattle and Hum is next level
@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT I never heard of U2 until The Unforgettable Fire was released. Pride played on the radio. After that took off is when U2 gained radio traction. Only after that did I hear other songs such as Sunday Bloody Sunday, New Years Day, and other songs from their first 3 albums before The Unforgettable Fire. I am sure they were popular from the start in other areas of the world but that is what I remember in High School. 1984.
Another great song off The Joshua Tree Album. The whole album rocks. ❤
They should really listen to two particular sequential Joshua Tree tracks to get U2's range: "Bullet the Blue Sky" & "Running to Stand Still". Both beautiful in completely different ways.
Red Hill Mining Town is a real forgotten gem as well. That's really my favorite U2 song to be honest, which is saying a lot.
"Pride (In the Name of Love)", inspired by the death of Rev Martin Luther King Jr, is one of U2s most powerful songs and would be a great choice for February's Black History month.
Ok. Jay, "Pride (In the Name of Love)" is the best U2 song, my favorite song of all time.
Pride is my favorite U2 song. Second is Sunday Bloody Sunday
It's my absolute favorite song of U2 and overall just a beautiful tribute to MLK Jr. This should have been the first song they reacted to by U2. I just think U2 should have done a better music video to it...there was no photos or video of MLK and a truly lame video for such a fantastic song
@@juniorvega42 you me too!
Black history is American history. There shouldn't be a black history month. It is patronizing and insulting.
I actually think it's really cool that Jay gave his honest opinion, "it's just alright" is a perfectly valid response.. Hey, if you're not feelin it, you're not feelin it! At least we know it's his real reaction to the songs. :)
You’ve got a point there
Amber gets it. So much emotion and they’re like a different band with each song. Seeing U2 live in concert is like going to the best church you ever imagined. I saw them right after 9/11 at the Baltimore Arena and it was just a big emotional experience.
That was a spiritual experience...
Saw the concert before 9/11, and they can't back to town months after. Saw them again and I cried and cried. They're so...
Yes. It's a spiritual experience. ✨
There are actually multiple churches (or were) that use U2 explicitly and call it the “U2charist”
The guy always complains about "slow" songs because he doesn't listen to lyrics and emotion. Music is not just about beats.
💯
How does a self-professed base guy not totally dig this song?? Most puzzling reaction ever.
The poetry went-Over, his head . 🤔🥺🤨
I was also puzzled by this reaction. I think Jay was lost in trying to fit their sound in a box, rather than just appreciating the music.
Base? Bass?
Every time I hear this song, I'm back to being an 18 years old, sitting in my dorm room freshman year in college, pining over a guy from one of my art classes. And it always brings a happy/melancholy tear to my eyes.
This is one of U2's Top 5 best songs in my humble opinion! The more you listen to it, the better you're likely to love this song!
This track was from their “Joshua Tree” album. Two other must listen tracks are “Still Haven’t Found What I’m looking For” and “Where the Streets Have No Name” ❤
Absolutely!!!!!!
There hardly a track on that album that isn't must-listen. "Running to Stand Still", "One Tree Hill", "Red Hill Mining Town", "In God's Country", and "Trip Through Your Wires" are all so good.
This is pure Irish passion. Probably their greatest accomplishment along with Where The Streets Have No Name. Gets straight to the point and builds to a crescendo where he literally cries music. That’s what a broken heart must sound like. Much love. ❤
Where the Streets Have No Name is my favorite. Just hard driving rock.
Well described. The organ/synth/guitar opening is beautiful.
I'd say One has more passion, but that's because I'm an Actung baby over the Joshua tree, all day long, J T has no songs as good as ultraviolet.
@@TreVader1378 I’ve always loved Achtung Baby as well, it’s my 2nd fave after Joshua Tree. My fave song on that album is “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses?” 🥰
@@melissakondek6370 yeah that's a good one, and so cruel, but my favourites are the last three.
The thing about U2 is their style has gone through more than a few different transformations over the years. Heck, when they first started out they were almost a punk band. This particular album came out in the late 80's (around 87 or so if memory serves correctly) and it was arguably their first solid commercial success and the album that really exploded them into the public consciousness.
Next really must be " I STILL HAVENT FOUND WHAT IM LOOKING FOR " the ORIGINAL album version. Just stunning.
This song is just about as perfect as a song can get. Beautifully arranged. Amazing vocals. Impeccable instrumentation. The video is even stunning. Amber....you always seem to get it ! ♥️♥️♥️
I totally agree! Amber, you rock!
Agreed!! ❤
Yes!!! I'm so glad Amber appreciated this song's greatness and beauty.
with or without you is a rock ballad.....this song made them the band thwey are today....their best album is arguably The Joshua Tree.....they were considered to be the biggest band of the 80s and 90s....Bono is still worth 700 million pounds today i believe
U2 is alternative rock, new wave, post-punk. Much like Inxs, The Cure, Echo and The Bunnymen, Depeche Mode, etc. They were hard to classify, but fall under those umbrellas. Dance rock type of music. These groups have been for along time. '90s, '90s and '00s. Modern groups like Arcade Fire, Coldplay, Bloc Party, The Verve, etc too.
As for ballads. It can be from any type of musical genre. R&B, rap, rock, hard rock/metal, soft rock, folk rock, , punk, new wave, alternative/indie, country, freestyle music, pop, etc. It just a slower emotional (mainly love, interpersonal, introspective,, etc ) songs.
The first time I saw this video was at around 11:30 PM back in 1987. NBC had a show called Friday Night Videos. It made me want to buy the Joshua Tree album.
Cannot believe there is anyone who hasn’t heard this song. The album Joshua Tree was 1987 Grammy Album of the Year. They beat Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and Prince that year. Any song on that album is stunning. Although they are a rock band, it’s not traditional 80s hard rock. But they started a theme of putting meaning back into rock songs. Not just sex, drugs and R&R. They were also very active in finding peace in Ireland. So their fame was not just music but activism as well. Still today.
Oh and in this video, F.I.N.E young guys.
Agree‼️ 💯%
If you were a young person in 1987 and didn't had the Joshua Tree album, you were weird. 😆
Amber always has the groove, she just always feels the 🎶
One of my favorite all time songs. When the guitar picking comes in before the first chorus it gives me chills every time. So emotional.
me too
"It was just alright for me." This is the kind of honesty that I appreciate. You don't have to be wowed by every song that you hear. I personally love this song but I'm not here for my reaction, I'm here for yours. Keep keeping it real and I'll keep coming back. Thank you both for trying all genres and always having fun with it. 👍
Amber's not just a "bigger U2 fan" than J, she's a bigger "Music" fan!
Well he’s a ‘(c)rap fan…so no surprise she would be 🤷🏻♀️
She's our "Rock Chick"👍🏻😃
J., are you kidding me? This song is quintessentially U2. Mega hit for them! If you don't like this song...alot! When will you ever be a TRUE REAL music fan. C'mon man! In the pantheon of great songs this one is up near the TOP!!! I mean just imagine the conundrum of the words 'with or without you'. The angst and torture of the soul trying to come to a decision for your future when faced with such a choice. Perhaps you're not as wise as I'd hoped you would be. Ask Amber, I'll bet she understands. Peace out!
This is my absolute favorite U2 song ever and I gotta admit it hurt a little bit to hear Jay say it was 'just alright'. 😬😞 It's pulled at my heart since it came out when I was 16 years old. ❤
In reality that was a compliment to U2...
This is a song that grows on you, after several times listening
I felt the same as you, K.😳
I feel like he might enjoy something like Streets or Bullet the Blue Sky more from this album.
Oh man, me too!! This song has so much power, calling out from the deep, full of emotion ….maybe even some relatable pain & struggle. This song is huge. Jay missed out on the fun.
A ballad is a love song, no matter the genre. There are rock ballads, pop ballads, etc. Love watching y’all!
Have sen them live many times, and thye make stadiums feel intimate. Yes its a ballad and one of my very favourite songs ever.
Jay: “This is just alright”. What?
Wow this is nothing short of a gem. Phenomenal song by this great band
I like Jay but I think I am noticing a pattern where once he hears "bangers" from a band and he likes them he is disappointed with slower stuff by the band.
@@LBart218 Just noticing that, huh? Yeah, he can be a real buzzkill sometimes.
To be fair, this song took me a few listens to get into. But I DID learn to love it!
It’s not a song that really grabs you. It’s pretty basic, but also really perfect
He did same thing with George Michaels - Father figure. Hate when he pauses the vid and kills the mood
One of my favourite songs ever! The slow build, the emotion in the vocal and the beautiful way the instruments support but never overshadow the nuances of the melody. An exquisitely crafted piece of art. U2 at their finest. 40 years on it still gives me the same chills as the first time I heard it.
When Love Comes To Town is a collaboration between B.B. King & U2. You two will love it ( pun intended)
I was 12 when this song was released and the power, meaning and pure mastery was lost on me as a young man. Now nearly 50 this is one of my all-time favorite songs and it always teleports me back to mom's home-cooked dinners and family board game nights with Mtv on in the background.
U2 is definitely an iconic band! I love them and I love this song from the album, The Joshua Tree (1987), which I have on vinyl! Bono’s voice is an emotional roller coaster!! A ballad is a slower sentimental or romantic song, doesn’t have to be a rock song! There are R&B ballads, Country ballads, Folk ballads, etc!❤❤
Heard this song a thousand times and it never fails to touch me. Could hear it a thousand more and not tire of it. The Edge makes this song ethereal.
Ethereal is the perfect word
In my opinion, most iconic U2 song. SHOCKED that this is your first listen to this song!
They're kids.
They may have heard it in movies or even the grocery store but they haven't sat down and actively listened.
From “Where The Streets Have No Name” to “Mothers Of The Disappeared”, The Joshua Tree is by far the greatest album U2 has written IMO! Fun Fact: I have a tattoo on my back of The Joshua Tree they used on their album!!
U2 Live from Slane Castle - “All I Want Is You” and “Where the Streets Have No Name” (they blend into each other). One of my favorite live performances ❤💥👏🏼
That was shortly after Bono's father died. The emotion you hear in those songs is real.
@@PlumbPitiful Yes 👍🏼
This song is a soulful, heartfelt, and timeless classic! A ballad is a slower, moving song (like this one) that often tugs on your heartstrings. It's a type of song that can be blues, rock, country, etc., and is not relegated to a specific genre.
👆
80s to early 2000s is their best era. Bad, Beautiful Day, Last Night on Earth, Mysterious Ways, Still Haven't Found and With or Without You are all worth listening to.
"With or Without You" is such a good song. One of U2's best! But it's really not a ballad. At its heart is in-fact about a romantic relationship, but it has turned sour and the subject is at odds with what to do or how to proceed. They can't live with the relationship, but also can't live without it. Much deeper when you truly dive into the lyrics. "See the stone set in your eyes, see the thorn twist in your side", "Sleight of hand and twist of fate, on a bed of nails she makes me wait" and "Through the storm we reach the shore, you give it all but I want more". Ballads are more about the love and getting it back, not fighting it. So it's essentially just an emotionally poised song. That said, the entire Joshua Tree album is excellent. Along with this song, there is also "Where the Streets Have No Names" and "I Still Haven't Found What I Am Looking For" (personal favorite) They are also incredible live.
This song is from The Joshua Tree album, which is true masterpiece I have listened to countless times since it was released in the late 80s. The music has kind of a roots rock sound which is a little somber and the lyrics on every song are thought provoking. Bono is a musical genius, but I also always need to give credit to The Edge, their lead guitarist, who is so integral to their sound.
dont forget the bands founding member, larry mullen jr. myself a drummer, i i always admired his drumming and thought he was as integral to the bands sound as any of the other members.
Joshua Tree and Thriller are *the* greatest pop/pop-rock albums of the 80's. Hands down.
@hunchemlnarik. Absolutely. Larry’s is the heart of the band. And probably the most technically gifted musician. His unique drum beats were so critical to forming the band’s sound in the early years & to most of their biggest hits. But I love all four members. U2 are legendary.
This is not only my all-time favorite U2 song but one of my favorite songs ever!
Mine too
Same
when this album came out ,you could not go anywhere socially without hearing a song from it,miss those days
one of my favorites of u2 is an older song " i will follow" their song " beautiful day" is a gem
This is my favorite U2 song...has been since it came out when I was in 8th grade. It's hsunting, it's beautiful and perfectly evinces that exquisitely torturous feeling between loving and hating the same person.
What a classic!
The Joshua Tree, where this song originates, is an iconic album, one of the Top-10 of the 1980s. An underrated gem off this album is “One Tree Hill” (My favorite U2 song ever) Amber and Jay, enjoy discovering!
Yes, great song and great tribute to Mr. Carroll.
My favorite U2 song as well.
One Tree Hill yes yes yes!!! And Red Hill Mining Town also!
Stunning musicians, stunning control, stunning passion. What's not to love?
You guys are the epitome of Gen Z (or young Millennials) truly appreciating music from the 20th Century. You guys give me hope that today's generation doesn't have to miss out on all that good stuff we were so privileged to have a front row seat to when it was all happening. And most importantly, you prove that even though you don't have the nostalgia and memories of the times these songs hit it big which makes them so precious to us, you still nevertheless "get it" and have the APPRECIATION! 👍🏻
One of my favorite U2 songs ever. Never get tired of it.
Phenomenal vocal performance.
This song made me a U2 fan. That whole Joshua Tree album was fantastic. And then in the documentary Rattle and Hum they were followed on their US tour. It's interesting that Amber is wearing a B.B. King t-shirt because he was a guest in one of their concerts and in the movie it shows him at the rehearsals reading the lyrics to When Love Comes To Town and being seriously impressed by Bono's lyrics even asking him how old he is, LOL. Also you see drummer Larry Mullen getting very emotional during their visit to The Sun Studios and Graceland because he is such a big Elvis fan. He got to sit on one of Elvis' motorbikes after Bono charmed the tour guide, LOL.
U2 are a rock band and this is most definitely a ballad.
This song always gets me, always. 💔 4:00 A ballad is a slow sentimental or romantic song, so yes I’d say this is a ballad. Any genre can have ballads, they come in many musical styles.
In addition, it can be a song that narrates a story.
This comment should be pinned!
Very well stated Patty 🙋🏻♀️
To me a ballad is a song you can slow dance to. I think this is more of a mid tempo song.
@@ronnix23 Unfortunately, your definition is wrong. A Ballad tells a story in verse, either a poem or song. Tempo is of no consequence.
My goodness. When Bono opens it up vocally, it is incredible! His voice runs the scale of emotions, and I'm feeling them along with him. The bass, pounding drums, guitar, vocals...all perfect together. Another song where I feel Bono's passion is Night and Day.
I was 20 years old when this song came out and I worked at a video store....we used to blast this song on MTV whenever we didn't have any customers in the store. One day....we got busted when the owner walked in and caught us...and thank God he had a sense of humor. His reaction was priceless....he never made a face...never stopped walking....just walked on to the back of the store and told us "I can run this store with or without you but I would prefer not to have to go thru the computer training again with a new employee" We busted out laughing....turned down the music and he just chuckled and shook his head. Loved that job...we got to watch MTV whenever we wanted and got to watch movies whenever we wanted while we worked....and got my hands on some killer posters to boot. Good Times!!!
Up next for U2, definitely do "Still Haven't Found what I'm Looking For"
they really have their share of songs where they take their time and reel the listener in most rock bands tend to do that, which is the best part of the style really an awesome band
“All I Want Is You”, “In God’s Country”, “I Will Follow”, “Red Hill Mining Town”, “Mysterious Ways”, “Bad”… all great choices ❤
You guys have to listen to the whole album The Joshua Tree. Where the Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, With or Without You, Bullet the Blue Sky, Running to Stand Still, Red Hill Mining Town, In God’s Country, Trip Through Your Wires, One Tree Hill, Exit, Mothers of the Disappeared.
I’m so envious that you’re just discovering them ❤❤
Still one of the best bands ever. That iconic guitar and thumping bass will get you everytime. U2❤🇮🇪
The Joshua Tree was a HUGE album for them. Other hits from that album that you should listen to were "Where the Streets Have No Name" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For".
One of their best songs from one of their best, if not THE best u2 album ever! Totally agree with many others that you gotta do “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.” You will NOT regret it!
It takes a certain special kind of person to understand and really appreciate the music of U2. This man was on another level. Even after all these years, this song still sounds like it came out yesterday. Awesome!
??
well said.
Try ‘She moves in mysterious ways’ or ‘hold me thrill me kiss me kill me’ or ‘stuck in a moment’ or ‘city of blinding lights’ or ‘when love comes to town’ with BB King……. I could go on!
This was the song that was their first major hit in USA back in 1987. This song moved them from just being well known in Ireland, to being known worldwide. Also, U2 can be put into the 'Alternative Rock' genre.
To be fair, Pride (In the Name of Love) off their previous album-The Unforgettable Fire-was a huge U.S. hit as well. It didn’t hit #1 in the country like this song, but it was way up there & played non-stop on the radio.
@@AndTheRoadGoesEverOn - Wow…that was before my time, but I always thought that ‘Pride’ was first released in the early 1990s. I hadn’t realized that it was from 1984. It would appear that U2’s ‘Pride’ was truly ahead of its time, since the genre of the song was more so the type that became more common in the 1990s Alternative Rock scene. The fact that the song didn’t depend on Synth as was common in the 1980s pop-rock scene, but while being highly innovative with the instrumentals and the vocal style, places this song as a 1990s genre released a decade before its time. 🍺🍺🍺
One of my absolute favorite songs! I love how this song builds and then hits its peak with Bono's yell. Absolutely love it! The song is all about Bono being torn between his road life with the band, and his life with his wife Ali.
A favorite Bono collaboration of mine is Bono and The Corrs- When the Stars go Blue
"The Joshua Tree" was groundbreaking in the 80s... it's what took U2 from the top of the Euro new wave scene to becoming legendary international rock stars. Their "Unforgettable Fire" album had some epic cuts, but "Joshua Tree" was a start-to-finish classic album with U2 at the peak of their powers.
A lot of U2's music actually is dark. Same with INXS. Both bands had this way of sliding in some idea of hope or salvation though, which is why I think they were so big. People can relate.
90's kids will immediately recognize any U2 songs from being constantly being played on the radio. Such a nostalgic sound, driving around in the back seat of a station wagon....
One of my favourite guitar solos of all time
So many different sides to U2, that's why they appealed to so many people. Not only that, they have great rhythms, great melodies, great riffs, and great lyrics. Just an awesome band all around. More U2 to check out: "Pride (In The Name Of Love)", "All I Want Is You", "Where The Streets Have No Name", "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", "Mysterious Ways", "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me", and "Discoteque".
Amber, nice shirt!
U2 did a song with B.B.King, a bluesy-rocker called "When Love Comes to Town".
Also, please listen to some of their earlier tunes like "Refugee" and "Two Hearts Beat as One".
I got to see them on the "Joshua Tree Tour" with Los Lobos and Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul as the openers.
Didnt even have tickets and I didnt have a car, so I told my buddy that if he drove then I would buy his ticket. We went to Cleveland Municipal Stadium and the FIRST guy we talked to was selling 2 tickets on the Field, Row 43. And he only wanted face value because they were his sons tickets and he couldnt make it so he just wanted to recoup his money.
I love how this song just builds. Everything, the guitar, bass, drums, vocals, gets more & more intense. And it's almost imperceptible until the end when it all quiets down again. I would recommend a fairly obscure U2 song "A Sort of Homecoming."
Their music is so complex and incredibly powerful. I love the slow, relentless build in this one in particular.
"Joshua Tree" was perhaps the most important album of the 80's for me. Their musical journey had reached the pinnacle of their journey as icons of the decade. The lyrics of this album affected scores of their fans including me. One particular song "One Tree Hill" is still one of my all-time favorite songs from U2. However, the entire album is amazing. This album marked a turning point in how the fans viewed U2 as artists. I will add this, I attended a U2 concert, and it was as close to a spiritual experience I have ever gotten.
Man, u r so licky
I like how Bono does an almost Irish keen in his songs. He is Irish and that really does come out in his voice. Just beautiful.
Was never really into U2 but... "Still Haven't Found What Im Looking For" is a TOP tune. 🎶🎼
LOVE this song!!!
This album was produced by the musical genius Brian Eno. Such an incredible matchup U2 under the direction of the master.
Eno and Daniel Lanois. The album has a lot of Lanois' signature style.
This song is an all-time classic, and helped make U2 the iconic band they are today.
U2's performance of "Where The Streets Have No Name" at the 2002 Superbowl halftime show was one of the best performances ever in Superbowl halftime history and was one of the most moving performances ever by a musical artist. The half time show was right after the September 11th attacks and I remember them performing this song while every single victim of the attacks was shown behind them. I remember vividly where I was when I saw this performance. Bono's singing and stage presence was, and will always be, incredible.
Anything from their concert: "Live at Slane Castle" is great, especially "all I want is You.. and let it feed right into "Where the Streets Have no Name". One of the best concerts I have ever seen. I saw them in Montreal that same year. Incredible!
One of the best rock songs evere written. I will never get tired of it.
Of course we are right! Us old timers are the teachers here while Amber, you are the students as opposed to real life when you are the teacher. A brilliant legendary tune amongst many more. Don’t bother classifying greatness just enjoy it!😊The difference between U2 and other bands is there emotion and rhythmical playing!
"All I Want Is You" , "Mysterious Ways", "Even Better Than The Real Thing"
Great song. When he starts belting is amazing.
I was in high school when this song was released and it's what made U2 my favorite band. I had the pleasure of seeing them in concert in the 90s during their Pop tour and they are the real deal. Jay, if you want something edgier from U2 check out "The Fly."
This was U2's first US # 1 hit. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for three weeks beginning May 16th 1987. They had one more US # 1 hit with I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For which topped the Hot 100 chart for two weeks beginning August 8th 1987. Both songs are from their Jousha Tree album which won the Album of the Year Grammy award and sold over 25 million copies worldwide. U2 is the only Irish group to top the Hot 100 chart.
Yep one of the biggest bands of all time over 175 million records sold and this is one of the greatest songs of all time as said by the Rolling Stones magazine
U2 had hits with "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Two Hearts Beat as One," and "New Year's Day" but nobody knew if they were going to stick around. Their album "The Unforgettable Fire" scored a hit with "Pride (In the Name of Love)" and the album itself was solid ... just beautiful. The band was obviously hitting their stride. Their next album, "The Joshua Tree" - where this song is from - was one of those phenomenal hit albums where song after song gets radio play. With this album, U2 became a top band overnight. Joshua Tree included "With or Without You," "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," "Where the Streets Have No Name," "In God's Country," "Bullet the Blue Sky," and other great album songs like "One Tree Hill," "Red Hill Mining Town," "Running to Stand Still." The guitar style of the band (using delay) became iconic ... practically a musical style of its own. It became so popular, I'm not sure modern audiences will hear this music as being as impactful as it was back then.
U2 dynamically is about their distinctive sound as an ensemble. The Edge gives them that unique sound palette with his guitar effects orchestrations and use of delays . Together with Larry and Adam they form a precise rhythm section that serves the song underlying Bono's unique vocals and subject matter such as love, war, religion..they have delved into different genres often whilst still maintaining a uniquely identifiable sound.
Absolutely agreed. Bono (and Edge, these days) may be the face, but collectively they have a 'vibe'. Also agree Adam and Larry are one of the best rhythm sections in rock. Just what is needed, nothing more, nothing less.
The beauty of U2 is their diversity and passion. Bono says every U2 song is a gospel song. This one means multiple things, his relationship with his faith and Jesus, and also his amazing beautiful wife whom he met and started dating the same week the band formed when they were kids in school. He and Ali are soulmates, still married, still in love.. he says she saved his life. It's a beautiful love story and in his memoir Surrender he talks about this song in relation to his relationship with Ali. He has written a couple songs for her; The Sweetest Thing and All I Want Is You. All I Want Is You ... Live at Slane Castle is a must watch. It's beautiful and so powerful. Always PASSIONATE, Bono gives you his entire soul when he sings live. Love them so much. Special band who have changed the world with their music quite literally. I hope you dig deeper and discover the magic of U2.
yes. i always thought he was singing about his relationship with the roman catholic church.
U2 the finest rock band ever.
This song will always throw me back to 1986/7 and driving off-base in the Philippines. Fresh to Clark AB and learning to live in another county. The heat, the dust of the road being thrown up as we rode along. That memory is entangled with this song playing on AFRTS (base radio).
That guitar sound in the beginning right after "I'll wait for you" - they way it soars high and modulates down - OMG that has to be one of my favorite musical moments ever. It's one that hits me hard and I literally cannot keep from holding my breath and closing my eyes when I hear it.
