We should also all fall on our faces to give thanks for John Hughes who really gave Simple Minds and other bands like them exposure to kids like me who otherwise would never have heard them, and for the treasures he left behind with the incredible films that defined and helped shape a generation. No other time was like the being a teenager in the 1980's.
You should really love this one! One of my favorites! Robin Clark sings the backup vocals and I think she is absolutely phenominal. In my opinion she's the glue that ties this song together and really gives it that punch. Glad you liked it.

"Sanctify Yourself" and "All the Things She Said" are a couple more great songs of theirs. Also, the lead singer, Jim Kerr was married to Chrissie Hynde from the Pretenders for a time. They're another great band you need to get back to! I don't think you've done "Middle Of the Road" or "Back on the Chain Gang" yet and you are missing OUT on those!
I was 13 when this came out. But I was totally hooked on "Don't you" and didn't really get into other Simple Minds music until much later. I always wondered why that was until a few years ago I learned that "Don't you" wasn't actually written by them. SUCH a banger! This is a song I didn't appreciate enough when it was out. Years later I heard it again and was like STOP! This song is amazing! It's an anthem song that's even better cranked all the way up. Love it! Found you guys through your Def Leppard reactions and am loving your thoughtful reactions and the variety of genres you cover! 💖
The backing singer, Robin Clark, was married to Carlos Alomar who performed with David Bowie's band. As a teen, she worked at a department store with Luther Vandross who for a time was one of Bowi'es back up singers.
There will never.....NEVER....Nevvvveeerrrr....ever be a Decade that brings us or brought us better music than the 80s You have got to do "Tide and Time" by Basia🎵🎶
Listening to Basia was a guilty pleasure of mine back then. Lured me into buying the CD with the title song and found I enjoyed the whole album. London, Warsaw, New York was good too.
PHENOMENAL song!! This was a fabulous reaction! To see you enjoy it so much!! Everything about this is great. Favorite of theirs. Don’t You Forget About Me is their biggest hit BUT this song is still played on Sirius 80’s on 8 ALL THE TIME. This song is such a favorite. Next - Pleeeease do Level 42 Something About You - another fan favorite 80’s song that I still see so many comments on!! 👍🏼👍🏼
Simple Minds is a very spiritual band. My favorite song by them is "Speed Your Love to Me." Like U2, many of their songs are written about God with lyrics cloaked in rock guitars, bass, keyboards & drums. "Oh, you lift me up to the crucial top, so I can see Oh, you lead me on, till the feelings come And the lights that shine on But if that don't mean nothing Like if someday it should fall through You'll take me home where the magic's from And I'll be with you"
80's banger. Quintessential 80's sound. Everything about this song is what was wonderful about the music from this decade. Nostalgia filled enough to make you tearful. I can hear this played on the radio alongside Tears For Fears "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" , Paul Young "Everytime You Go Away", A-ha "Take On Me", Mike + The Mechanics "Silent Running", Mr Mister "Broken Wings", and Sly Fox "Let's Go All the Way".
THAT'S MY HOMEGIRL ROBIN CLARK FROM THE BRONX. SHE WISHED ME A HAPPY BIRTHDAY A FEW YEARS BACK. THAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY DAY AND LIFE. THEY CAME FROM EUROPE TO GET ROBIN CLARK. HOW COOL IS THAT!!!!!!
I graduated H.S. in 84 , 80s music was the best decade in history hands down . I have learned so much about songs and their meanings from you 2 than I knew growing up listening to them everyday
Their album Néw Gold Dream contains some fantastic tracks - listen to “Glittering Prize” melodic and early dreamy synths from the great Mick McNeil. Later on “waterfront” from Sparkle in the Rain is epic. Much later 80s is “This is Your Land” from Street Fighting Years along with “Belfast Child”. Simple Minds held their own with U2 as Scotlands greatest band
"Belfast Child" is a must for your next Simple Minds reaction. It's a completely different vibe but very powerful. It was their only UK number one surprisingly. Much love from England 🏴
Since you like Simple Minds you should check out Echo and the Bunnymen. Killing Moon, Bring on the Dancing Horses, Seven Seas, Silver, Lips Like Sugar. Great, innovative sound.
One the best bands to come out of the 80's. This was a wave of British artists/bands, along with Tears for Fears, The Alarm & U2 whose music drove messages, got people to think, often times topics involving the spiritual & political, but always inspirational. Jim belts his songs out in an almost gospel style that gives you chills and makes your hair stand on end. Jim Kerr is an amazing singer and this album - ONCE UPON A TIME is a great album from start to finish. This song is incredible. "All the Things She Said", "Sanctify Yourself", "Ghost Dancing", "Oh Jungleland". Others - "Belfast Child", "Someone, Somewhere", "See the Lights". So many more. Keep reacting to this band. This band is so ridiculously good.
This outro is my favorite outro of all time. The "Ba da da da da ba da da......." It sounds so nostalgic to me. It transport me right back to being alive in the 80s
Love this song so much from my college days! Thanks so much for the great reaction! You might also enjoy the Simple Minds song called "Sanctify Yourself." (The poker-faced drummer actually flashes a smile or two in this video. :-) ) This was the band's next biggest hit in the U.S. after "Don't You Forget About Me" and "Alive and Kicking.," and it reached No. 14 on the Billboard pop singles chart.
My favorite Simple Minds Song. Don't You Forget About Me is a favorite because The Breakfast Club is a classic teen movie when I was a teen so nostalgic but that song got PLAYED OUT as a result, lol. Check out Sanctify Yourself, Someone Somewhere In Summertime, Promised You A Miracle, and All The Things She Said .
I absolutely enjoy how you two got into this track, Simple Minds was such an underrated band and especially this song it lifts your spirits and gives you such enlightenment. And Robins backing vocals always gave me chills. Perfect 80s song.
The 80’s were awesome! So many happy, upbeat songs made it a great time to be alive. Another great 80’s tune to react to is “Fascination” by Human League. Great video, too.
Simple Minds keyboardist, Mick MacNeil, is a great keyboardist who, along with Andrew Farris (INXS), helped bring the new keyboard sounds into the 80s mega hits. There are many others including Greg Hawkes (The Cars) that helped blend a new generation of synths alongside the rock guitar.
One of the great big sound bands ever by me..(swept U2 aside for me even).. don't stop here guys... Waterfront (mega sound), Speed Your Love to Me, their moody Love Song, Glittering Prize, the emotional Belfast Child and Mandela Day, New Gold Dream just for starters all BANGERS . Great reaction.
This song gives such an expansive and powerful feeling of invincibility and was so deeply a part of my musical journey. I was in high school at the time this came out and still love it just as much today. Even if you just listen to their album, New Gold Dream '81, '82, '83, '84 for yourselves, please do! I think it's their best, honestly. The bass lines in the tracks are incredible. It's one of those CDs that I still put on and listen to over and over before I turn it off.
Great song to belt out in the car! Now y'all have to learn the words. As a suggestion, Prince's "Diamonds & Pearls" (the song, but the entire album is great) has an amazing backup singer like this song (Rosie Gaines). Thanks for the reaction.
This song says 1980's to me more than any other, and I'm a heavy metal fan. Just perfect in every way. Takes me back to my high school and college years.
Some other Simple Minds songs you may like are Glittering Prize, All The Things She Said, Sanctify Yourself, Love Song and Someone Somewhere In Summertime.
Great reaction. Took me right back to my late teens. I used to play this song on a loop! Your next Simple Minds stop should maybe be: 'All The Things She Said' or 'Sanctify Yourself' - I don't think you'll be disappointed with either. Four decades on, Simple Minds are still touring btw! Still with founding members, Jim Kerr (lead vocalist) and Charlie Burchill (guitarist)...and Jim is still too cool for school lol.
LOVE IT... I've always considered this Group and a few others as 'alternative'. At least, it's different which I really like. Great Reaction, You Guys! :) PS- Happy to See Lots of Smiles from You Guys too!
Seen SM in concert twice, 1990 and then again in 2018, and now got tickets to see them in 2024 , Jim and Charlie have kept the band right on track through the years. Brilliant band. .. and great to see you guys bopping around to it .
It doesn't get the love "Don't You Forget About Me" does, but wow, this is a great song by these guys. The texture of everything - guitar, bass, keys and they had such a great way of recording the drums (having a killer drummer didn't hurt either). What really sells this song is the female vocalist whose name unfortunately escapes me. She absolutely hits it out of the park and I honestly don't know if the song would be as good without her. The scenery in this video is pretty spectacular, too. This entire album is excellent and honestly could be a greatest hits album.
This was their biggest hit off Once Upon a Time, which is IMHO one of the best albums of the 80s and one of my favorite albums of all time. 8 songs, all of them gold. For your next, I recommend Sanctify Yourself, Ghost Dancing, or Oh Jungleland. Simple Minds is not synth pop; they're synth ROCK.
A suggestion, but first just want to say love Simple Minds, they along with TFF and U2 (of course) were up there, but there was so much cool innovative stuff happening and MTV really did play music. Please do Basia, she and Danny White did so many great tunes during a span in the 80s, 90s. Many of them on the pop charts (Time and Tide) (Cruisin' for Bruising) and other that are just great tunes, like Copernicus, Brave New Hope. We were lucky to catch a show and watch her band perform up close and they sounded better than on their record. So that's my suggestion.
You should listen to Glittering Prize next as I think Jay would love the incredible bass playing. I'd also recommend Waterfront and Up On The Catwalk which both have an epic 80's pop/rock sound.
Another great choice for a reaction! Simple Minds are one of the great 80s stadium rock bands and another classic Scottish rock group. "Alive And Kicking" was one of the first single of theirs that got me into their sound, and although admittedly Jim Kerr (their lead singer) can't really dance (he tends to just sway or weave about in their videos instead), he has a great voice and has been behind some iconic, timeless songs like this one and of course, "Don't You Forget About Me", which most know from the film The Breakfast Club. Other great tracks from them include "Waterfront", "See the Lights" and "Hypnotised".
As much as “Don’t Forget About Me “ is their most popular song it’s only a fraction of the band. This is more representative of the band and their style.
It is a uplifting song. Simple Minds always gave me a Police, U2, Peter Gabriel vibe. That eighties sound, with impactful messages in their songs. They have a lot of great music to check out though. Here's some of my favorites. All The Things She Said Waterfront Up On The Catwalk Street Fighting Years Someone, Somewhere In Summertime Sanctify Yourself
Such a great song! This might be my favorite song of theirs. It's uplifting and positive with a good message. Rarely seen in today's music. I love all of the changes throughout the song. It's a bit less formulaic than typical pop music. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of the backup singer, but I love her voice here. She adds a really beautiful element to the music. I highly recommend you also check out the song All the Things She Said, which features the same backup singer. It's musically not quite as dynamic and rich as Alive and Kicking, but it's still a very catchy song.
Simple Minds was an iconic New Wave/Alternative mid/late 80's band, an important part of the music of the time to be sure.
They were not a late eighties band. They were in the charts with the brilliant New Gold Dream album in 82 and were around before that even.

Of course Don't you forget about me is great, but no one ever plays this one...I absolutely LOVE this song! Thanks for doing it!
An absolute 80’s anthem!✌🏻
There Is nothing that shows what 80s music was about more than this !
Favorite track by Simple Minds is All The Things She Said! Song is so awesome!
A couple of their 'singles' which l love, but rarely mentioned are See the Lights and She's a River.
LOVE IT... I've always considered this Group and a few others as 'alternative'. At least, it's different which I really like. Great Reaction, You Guys! :) PS- Happy to See Lots of Smiles from You Guys too!
A brilliant Scottish band who could rock it out and yet have a wonderful emotional song as well xx
Robin Clark is the female vocals and she's phenomenal. Always been a fan of Jim Kerr!
This song drags me back to a particular night in my life. Wow…. I am feeling old and nostalgic for sure. Good choice.
The music of the 80’s was so great, unique and diverse!!
Seen SM in concert twice, 1990 and then again in 2018, and now got tickets to see them in 2024 , Jim and Charlie have kept the band right on track through the years. Brilliant band. .. and great to see you guys bopping around to it .
“Belfast Child”. Haunting, beautiful xx
Unforgettable music, mesmerizing Scotland, beautiful memories of both, thank you guys!
This song is so good just everything about it makes me 😊
Simple Minds en concert, c'est tout simplement sublime Jim Kerr à cette époque était sur scène magique, avec une voix d'une force renversante ! 💎
Waterfront is my fav from Simple Minds. Great reaction👍🏼
Absolutely adored this song in the eighties!¡...everything 0about it is absolute perfection...!!!❤
This is their mainstream stuff, the earlier stuff is better "Love Song" "Waterfront" and quite a few others.....One of the best vocalists.
New Gold Dream is one of the best albums of the 80s. Not one mediocre track.
Fellow Glaswegians! Mon the Scots! 🏴
Been asking for “Time And Tide”. Maybe if they get enough requests?
I absolutely love reliving the magic of this music through you! It’s so fun!!!
You should listen to Glittering Prize next as I think Jay would love the incredible bass playing. I'd also recommend Waterfront and Up On The Catwalk which both have an epic 80's pop/rock sound.
They have, check it out👍
Mel Gaynor is one of the greatest drummers of the era.
Absolutely rock solid drummer.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this song!! So excited for this reaction!
Simple Minds are a Scottish rock band formed in Glasgow in 1977. They have released a string of hit singles - awsome
All The Things She Said
Waterfront
Up On The Catwalk
Street Fighting Years
Someone, Somewhere In Summertime
Sanctify Yourself
Such a great band 👍
Such a great, positive, powerful song! Simple Minds has so many. And they keep putting out new music all these years later.
One of my favorite bands.
I think her name is Robin Clark. She also worked with Bowie.
When I die, I want my heaven to be the 80's.❤
Simple minds one of the best bands of the 80's lucky to see them live awesome
