      @@zwheeler01 I followed a friend's advice and went with a Versys X 300. It was a great first bike if not a little on the heavy side for a bike of this displacement. I definetly will try that bike out as soon as I can...curiosity: in Brazil it's named MT 07 (master of torque).

  • @TheVik97

    I got this bike a few weeks back and I agree with this. I was choosing between an R6 and Ninja 300 as a first bike. After doing the research, I found out that the FZ/MT line exists. I was looking for enough power but to I'm new to riding so I want a forgiving bike.
    So far after 2 weeks of riding, it's tons of fun on the windy roads and around the city. It's good for traffic since neutral is really easy to hit, I rarely miss it. On the highway its very different. I haven't rode any other bikes, but the wind is very intense. This bike was designed without aerodynamics in mind.
    Even thou it's not as much fun on the highway, I love this thing. It's still faster than 99% of the cars on the road and is pretty forgiving if you twist the throttle a bit too much in the corner.

In hindsight, I think I should've went with an FZ-07 to get better band for my buck since I paid about $5500 for a brand new R3 when a used FZ-07 wouldn't been around $4700.....oh well. Having had my FZ07 for a year, I can definitely agree with most of this. My only additions would be:
    1. Who needs to look at the revs when it makes that MASSIVE sound?
    2. The front suspension can be made much better with a 15$ fork oil upgrade (higher weight and 20mm more than factory spec).
    3. Pulling the air box snorkel and tuning helps the top end markedly, but still won't satisfy if you're used to revving to 14k rpms
    Overall it is an awesome bike that encourages you to have fun a little closer to the speed limit 😉

    Down here in Australia they are called an MT 07. AFTER removing all the learner restrictions. Adding a power commander fuel manegment and a good dyno tune I found it to pull hard all the way to redline.

    Nice video clammy dude

    • @cdaniell30
      @cdaniell30 5 років тому +1

      He's not saying it doesn't pull hard, he's saying there's not that feel of increasing pull as the revs get higher...like he's used to getting from sportbikes. And it's true, the torque curve is pretty flat from 4 to 8k, then it falls off a little the rest of the way up, even with a good tune. It's just the way that engine is built.

    I've got a 2018 MT-07 and agree with most of the points here. I would say that my discomfort at speed starts around 75mph, and maybe that is due to some slight changes between the FZ and MT geometry in the front. Going from a bike with almost no dash/display (2007 ZX10), I think the MT has a great display and available info. I use the bike as a solo commuter, and it has exceeded my expectations for comfort and fun!

      Even with the supposed progressive fork springs and heavier oil, the front mushes way too easy. Aft market preload Adjusters help as well as them eliminating the rubber mounted handlebars.
      Tha seat is stiff, very stiff after about 45 minutes.
      Yes, it won't rev out like an inline four and this bike was not meant to win any races anyhow.
      Replacing the bars with clipon adaptors drops your hands into a semi crouch to improve handling more. Yes, long haul comfort suffers, but with that seat it's out of the question.

    I own a 2018 Yamaha MT-07 (which is my 10th motorcycle and my 6th Yamaha), and I like the bike. The bike's worst feature is the location of the horn button, which is mounted to the right side of the headlight and turn signal switches: in an emergency, and especially when wearing heavy gloves the time spent fumbling for the button could prove fatal. I cannot cover the horn button while riding in case of an emergency, because doing so requires me to remove my hand from the clutch lever. Yamaha should move the horn button underneath the switches as it has done on other models. My other key complaints are the suspension and the indecipherable tachometer.

    Ey Yam the Ham, can you do a video about all the things you should check on your bike before you start riding again after winter? I'm in the midwest so it probably won't be a while, but that's low-key one of the things I'm freaking out about, since the first thing I'll do with my bike is drive it 200 miles to my new apartment (moved in winter and couldn't bring it along ☹), and I don't want to break it/DIE because I missed something and it's only my second season riding.

      I think because I haven't had it long and don't have much of a history on it, I'm concerned something hasn't been checked for a long time that I don't know needs to be checked... Tires need to be replaced though, I think? They're kinda squared off.

      @@anthonysilvestri4946 Ahh okay thanks! I did store it with gas, but it was high octane, and I used a fuel stabilizer and filled it right to the brim. I know I definitely need special lube for o-ring chain... I believe this bike uses a sealed chain? It has just over 10k miles, from what I remember the chain looked kinda rusty, but it could have just been dirt and grime? I remember it was pretty orange, though.

    • @tricd0444
      @tricd0444 5 років тому +1

      @@anthonysilvestri4946 Mackenzie Fulton One thing to consider with these terrible, long midwest winters is oil shelf life. There's a handful of studies that have been done that say after an amount of time has passed, some say a year, some say 6 months, you should probably consider changing your oil regardless of mileage due to moisture getting into the oil and causing problems. If your bike is stored inside a heated garage, this is much less of a problem. I personally winterize my bike with a full tank of fuel with stabilizer, pull the battery out and put it on a battery tender and let it sit for the winter just like that. When riding time comes around, oil & filter change, lube the chain and check it over for any wear, as well as making sure the chain is properly tensioned, check the air in the tires, and go for a nice long ride and burn up all that old(er) gas.
      As far as tires, "squareness" doesn't matter nearly as much as actual tread depth does. The owners manual should say how deep that tread should be before you need to replace it. I believe 1/32 to 2/32 is a common measurement for motorcycle tires, although I would never run my tires that long in any sort of adverse weather.
      Most auto parts stores should have a chain cleaning combo kit with a brush to clean your chain. Another little tip to check on the chain is to watch the chain as it goes around -- does the chain 'bind up' anywhere, or are all the links freed up and moving independently as they go around that rear sprocket? If they bind up and the chain isn't moving around that sprocket freely, you'll probably want to replace that chain if you can't get it freed up with lube and cleaning. Good luck with the bike, and congrats on that new apartment, though!

    • @MocknozzieRiver
      @MocknozzieRiver 5 років тому

      @@tricd0444 Hey thanks! Thankfully, it is stored in a heated garage, and it will stored in a heated garage when I bring it back to me.
      That's what I meant! The tread depth looks suspicious. I think they're more sporty tires because they don't have a lot of tread lines, but throughout the middle section, it's all rubbed away and is just flat and smooth... does that make sense?\
      Otherwise those are definitely some things I'll look for when I clean the chain.
      I'm kinda thinking about taking the intermediate motorcycle safety course while I'm down there to get some classroom learning in. Either way I'll spend some time practicing before I leave.

    I just bought a new mt-07 and from someone who only owned Harley's in the past I think this bike seems like a great intro to sportier bikes. I've only put about 200 miles on it so far but my only "not love it" grip would be the wind on the highway at speeds greater than 70mph. I've seen a few windscreens that I'm considering to help with this, but all in all I think the bike was a great purchase. It's very comfortable, it's has plenty of power, and the gas mileage can be great with that eco mode. Thanks for making the video!

    Hello papa Yam!! I need some advice/experience from your end. I just bought a 2002 Yamaha yzrf1 and there’s lots of scratches as a previous owner apparently dropped it on both sides (how?) and I was looking to replace the fairings on both sides. Any suggestions on what websites I could go to or places I could drive to for parts? Thanks again granny’s lube!

    For the point about top end; waiting on delivery of the hordpower intake/ecu flash with yoshimura pipes setup. From all the dynos posted around the forums this is supposed to uncork the top end out to almost nine grand. Advertised +10 horses! That, a better suspension solution and a slipper clutch should erase the major functional complaints. Loving this bike. Good luck to the winner of your fazer.

    I agree on every point other than I love the led display one of the reasons I bought mine. It gave it a tron look. I agree that if you have had a faster top end bike “mine being a prior 636” that takes adjusting but in the right mtn roads that I live in this bike is an absolute monster. It’s super light and 70 to 90 is about par for the really tights stuff and it’s super fun. I’ll be buying a r1 next summer but this will be year three on the fz I had three years on the 636 and I’m keeping the fz and adding the r1 instead of selling one to buy the other. This bike is a sick commuter/daily monster. Hard to beat for the cash. I’m 20 thousand mile in and want to see if I can get 100k!!

    I was getting ready to disagree with your dislikes but yea it's pretty spot on. I honestly hate the way the front of the bike looks. I wish it had more of a street tripple or mt10 dash set up that is mounted independently of the bars and more forward to give the bike just a little bit bigger look and make it easier to watch your speed.
    And also, the highway is straight no fun. After an hour it feels like your helmet is being pressed against your face and you are holding onto the bars to keep from being thrown off (a bit of an exageration) it's really fatiguing if you are going over 70 for any longer than an hour. Yes you can get a windscreen, but imo it makes its questionable front look worse. Sure it has the legs to ride on the highway all day long, but you certainly won't be impressing anyone with speed.

  • @mattkemp1902
    @mattkemp1902 4 роки тому

    I own the Tracer 700 which I don’t believe you guys get in the states, but it’s essentially an MT07 with longer forks, swingarm, a small fairing and a screen. It has a much nicer to grip tank with tank grips, the fairing and screen give a decent amount of protection and although the front end isn’t quite as willing to leap in the air due to the larger, longer frame, it’s nice and stable at speed.
    Loves:
    - comfortable
    - handling is great, lots of low end torque for city riding but it cruises alright - yeah it’s not got as much up top but for my purposes it’s fine and it gets to highway speeds in a flash
    - versatility - it’s fun, it’s practical, it’s economical, it’s not bad looking, it will take a pillion happily, it will take luggage, it’s just a really solid all rounder for someone with just one vehicle.
    - display - gonna have to disagree with you on the display, I find it perfectly readable, although I think the tracer has a much higher cockpit
    - bit of a cliche but the cp2 engine really is a peach, great for newbies but still fun as I gain experience
    Dislikes
    - suspension is not good - my 125 was better. It’s not atrocious, but it’s not good, thankfully can be upgraded
    - with the stock exhaust it’s quiet and a bit tinny. Sounds great with aftermarket pipes though
    - brakes are ok - but with two discs and twin pot callipers, it feels like they should be more than ok
    - the engine is really hard to keep clean compared to my other bike - a lot of nooks and crannies
    - bit of rust on the frame here and there - powder coating on the frame and swingarm could be better

    Bought my first bike last spring. 2018 mt07. Was going to save some coin and get a left over fz07 but went with the MT. ABS from the factory, stiffer suspension compared to the fz (from what I’ve read) rear break doesn’t feel as “squishy” (again from what I’ve read). Some stuff does feel a little budget, but it is. That bike to me just wants to cruise at 90 on the highway. There is a lot of wind but I don’t find it to be unbearable. Planning to add a puigi windscreen to it soon, not a real big one, one that I think compliments the look of the bike. I’m itching for warm weather in NY, can’t wait to get back on it.

    I have 3 complaints for my 2018 mt07.
    1. Stock brake pads arent the best and feel lacking.
    2. Suspension is a bit soft and doesn't give you as much confidence in spirited cornering as I'd like.
    3. Fuel tank is a little on the small side I think, it'd be nice to have a 4 gallon. I find that when I'm on reserve I'll top off with 2.4 gallons which I believe leaves a whole gallon for reserve.
    Otherwise it's a great bike. Does really well on the freeways at 75+ mph. Comfortable on a 600 mile ride. Good power and definitely doesn't feel like its missing any up top. Puts a smile on my face every ride.

    The spacers in the front shocks are too long, cut them down 10-15 mm depending on your weight. Also they used too light of oil in the front shocks, replace it with a heavier weight oil. Those two things will significantly improve the front end.
    Yamaha also restricted this bike in several ways; the throttle body is physically restricted to around 50% of full throttle when wide open. The tube going into the air filter is small, remove it. The opening into the air filter is small (for the tube) replace that. The airbox after the filter has too small of tubing as well which can be easily replaced.
    Flash the ECU and get a tune and the FZ07 jumps from 40-45 HP to 60-65 HP with just those simple mods.

      I know I'm not the illustrious Papa Yam, but was in a similar position to you this time a year ago. I live in the heart of a major US city with tons of traffic and crazy drivers. I too was looking at 300ccs vs the 650 class. I ended up going with the FZ07 and MAN am I glad I did! I've been on a friend's Ninja 300 and I promise the instant torque the FZ has is a critical safety factory when navigating in town traffic. Being able to quickly jet out of a situation rather than waiting seconds for the power to build or having to downshift first has really helped me stay safe out there and get out of a few situations. Also, if you spend any time commuting on the highway, the engine of a 650 class will be much better. Just take your time to learn the bike and be a student. Watch and learn "twist of the wrist" and you will be fine starting with the extra power of a 650 over a 300

    • @Jjguthrie2993

      Also important to note, 600cc means supersport bikes like the R6 or ZX6R. Those bikes and engines are VERY different from the 650 class (FZ07, SV650, NINJA 650, Kawi Z650). Most people would recommend the 650 class for beginners, and not the 600s

    Have to disagree on a few things. 1) Plateaus after 5k RPM? Did you mean more around 8k RPM? I've got almost 30k on a 2015 that I helped the shop break out of the crate and it's strong up till around 8k, and it's still fully stock. Wondering if the mods on that bike are effecting it strangely. 2) 55+ sucks? Really? I've found more like 75+ can get excessively windy, but sub 70 it's no problem. For reference, I'm 6'3" @ 240lbs. I run a Puig touring windscreen. I have rode this bike camping back and forth from Dallas to Amarillo several times doing 80 the whole way. Normally one of the directions is into the wind too. Just my 2 cents from putting almost 30k on a FZ07. And for people wondering, the ONLY problem I've ever had with it was at 20k one of the front fork seals had to be replaced. 0 engine or tranny issues. Most reliable bike I've owned.
