  • Mobile Suit Gundam 00 is a very well loved Gundam series, but is it really that great? Most people who are die-hard fans of the show will say it's the best thing since sliced bread.
    Except it isn't.
Let's have a look, shall we?

You can look at Code Geass for another example of a show that suffered from the two-act structure that Sunrise was big on at the time. You end up with a brilliant first season that builds to an epic battle that the protagonists need to lose because the show would end there if they somehow won and then the writers realize they still need to create an entire second season that you can tell wasn't planned out from the beginning, so it isn't written nearly as tightly and goes in some strange directions. It's still a great show overall and Daybreak's Bell still gets me hyped every time I hear it.

This was pretty good retrospect on 00. Hope you don't mind me writing a mini essay since this one is one of my favorite AU's in the meta, but a lot of the points you made are on the money. Season 1 is hands down the best of 00, no debating. It acts as a great subversion of the gundams basically coming down as gods and then by the seasons end start getting there asses kicked. This season to me had some of the better looking gundam designs too. Exia, Dynames, and Virtue/Nadleh were all great. Kyrios took me awhile to warm up to it, but it's still a great addition to the transforming line. Season 2 really was just Zeta Gundam lite. The A laws had the ruthlessness of the Titans, but they lacked the swagger. I think the main thing that held the a-laws back were the innovators, since they were just puppeteering them the whole time. That does lead to one disagreement is with Ribbons. While he didn't have as much character, I felt he was just a foil for Setsuna which was damn good at that. As far as the mis reference for not having Brad as Ribbons to match Amuro, I don't think so. It's true that people that have dived deep in the UC will get a kick out of it, but over in the west, the UC line didn't get as popular. Most people when they think of gundam tend to default to wing. While it could've been a nice bone for the fans that were paying attention, it's only going to be a few gnawing on it. Season 2's strong points are the development of the main cast. None of the characters really remain static, Setsuna's in particular having his view on god change after being saved by 0 gundam only to have that view on what it means to be a gundam change when he learns that it was Ribbons piloting it. We can still laugh at the "I'am a Gundam" memes cause they are funny, but he learns by seasons end he has to be something greater. This all leads to the movie, I didn't hate the movie, but I thought it was just ok. This really doesn't help make the movie stand out as much. If anything, awakening of the trailblazer should've been a 5 episode OVA. There is a good idea of having communication being the thing that resolves the conflict, but you can't cram that within a 2 hour movie. I can honestly go on and on about 00 or just Gundam in general, but I leave it here for now. It's awesome seeing other youtubers talk about the franchise. Boofire is another one, but he doesn't upload as much.

I think the best moment that illustrates the nuance is my three favorite villains the father who just wanted to protect his country only to be killed by his own son for betraying the cause.
And the poor royal rich brat (who I frankly hated until I saw what they did to her) Celestial being basically hired selfish self-righteous killers to be their gundam pilots and with the black series of gundam’s come in first to save the main “heroes”
But later just kills an entire family at a party as terrorists changing the bratty rich girl into a ruthless killer just like Seitsana who seeks revenge on all gundams and celestial being only to get her revenge and cry out “Do you see me mom, dad I did it I killed them are you proud of me!”
That showed just how wrong celestial being was they didn’t stop the fighting only escalated it.

if you haven't purchased or built these kits yet the versions i recommend are: 00 Raiser - get the 00 XN Raiser, Exia - wait for the 2.0 or get the Exia Avalanche Dash, 00 Quan [T] - get the 00 Quan [T] Full Sabre

Brad Swaile voices 5 Gundam pilots that I can think of off the top of my head. The three you mentioned here, and two in the Seed and Seed Destiny series. In Seed, he voices Dearka Elsman, pilot of the Buster Gundam, and in Seed Destiny, aside from returning to voice Dearka, he voices another pilot named Auel Neider, pilot of the Abyss Gundam.

There is one missed opportunity I wish the series made:
Marina Ismail confronting Ali about what he did to Setsuna. She wanted what is best for the gundam meister VS the man who molded the boy to be a child soldier.

....So, is this the part where I should point out that the Aeolia Plan's entire purpose behind the interventions was to unite the world? It's explained in a post-credit scene towards the end of Season Two that the whole point of the Gundams intervening with armed force was to force the governments of the world to unite. It's also why they were given such a contradictory goal to begin with, because the desired outcome wasn't the 'elimination of way' but the 'unification of mankind.'
And, just as an aside, warning people that there might be hostile alien life that will kill us all would probably go over as well within the 00 Universe as it does in reality, which isn't well no matter who's making the claims. So, in that regard, Aeolia was rather smart and responsible by setting in motion a series of plans with the ultimate goal of preparing mankind for that eventual meeting.
"The problem with trying to pass this off as miscommunication is that people were brutally murdered by these aliens right out of the gate."
As a consequence of one of their only methods for understanding the world around them, which is merging with things. That this process seems to kill the subject (and I do mean 'seems,' because we're not shown what happens to the person's mind) is an unfortunate byproduct of the only reliable method they have available. The ELS literally only have that and their inherent ability to use Quantum Brainwaves to communicate and understand things, and as is stated in the movie itself, mankind wasn't at the point where they could handle the latter of these two methods normally. Hell, the only two Innovators even capable of attempting that kind of communication on their own treat it more like something giving them migraines than a reliable method of talking to them.
I also feel the need to point out that the ELS are one of the few examples in media of a proper alien race, meaning that while there might be some similarities on an emotional level between them and humans, the fact of the matter is their behavior, their views, their entire existence are all based on different circumstances and experiences. For crying out loud, their race seems to have developed on a gas giant instead of a rocky planet! So, while I get where this complaint comes from, I would remind you that there's no guarantee that a race like the ELS would, or even could, view it like that.

I have a huge soft spot for 00 since that was the first Gundam anime that got me into the franchise. Not perfect, but still a good one that I look back on fondly. And yes I admit I like aspects of the movie, especially since it’s supposed to tie in with Shenberg wanting to unite humanity in preparation for meeting aliens and so on (I also admit that I wouldn’t mind seeing more alien based Gundam stories, since 00 is the only one to tackle that, albeit haphazardly, especially when SEED briefly touched upon it but did absolutely nothing with it). But yeah it still has issues and I understand the general dislike for the movie due to how ill-thought out it was.

It's not overrated. It's actually underrated. And it will continue to be so until the weirdos out there accept that season 2 is actually as good as season 1. But we're getting there. Season 2 has only been looked at more favorably as time has gone on. Sooner or later, this show will be properly rated. Ya know, as unarguably a contender for the single best series in the franchise's history. What a great day that will be. :)

i tried to watch OO, but fell off after two episodes. The story feels like i can enjoy the concepts and the moral greys, but i've slowly been falling out from gundam. My favorite gundam will always be 8th MS team. 8th ms team isnt perfect (like you i love it but i also see its flaws), but 8th is what i want to see more of in gundam. down to earth war, where its predominantly ranged combat. i think this is just my love of mecha merging with my love of "modern/ww2 warfare" movies (im also a fan of combined arms warfare, so i would love to see the use of tanks and other combat vehicles alongside the mechs). I want less flash, and more grit. Less swords and more guns/"dakka". Less flying and more stomping. i originally checked out OO because of seeing that combat scene where celestial being 1st interferes in someones else's war. I see ground based mobile suits having a more conventional ground war (that wouldn't look out of place if it was Battletech/Mechwarrior). I loved every aspect of that combat and then quickly lost interest as soon as the gundam came in with pixie dust and flashy super technology.
nobody is asking me, but i like to think about it anyways. How i would change the presentation without changing the core themes of the story. instead of super science magic machines, i would have the gundams just be high performance. They are better then other mobile suits but to realy bring out their best you actually have to have legit skill (instead of just making me think that the gundam miesters are only good because of their technology). but what would allow "celestial being" to become a true threat is their use of AI integrated combat (using that AI machine you talked about at the start). Celestial being is so good with so few units because they use a machine that can give them almost perfect battlefield awareness.
this is like the difference between ww2 war and modern war. both use conventional firearms and combined arms warfare, but modern soldiers (such as the US) are able to accomplish bigger tasks with fewer men just because satellites and drones give them unparalleled battlefield awareness. another example is the difference between the best cold war tank vs a modern tank. while a modern tank might have slightly better armor and guns, what realy sets the modern tank apart from a cold war tank is all the extra electronics and optics and coordination. a modern tank will always sight the cold war tank 1st and always fire 1st. in other words "celestial being" would be similar to the capabilities of america during the gulfwar/iraq war. they have fewer tanks and soldiers, but because of modern advancements (and better training) are leagues ahead of their enemy.
anyway, just a thought. I just wish gundam was more like 8th MS. I wish gundam was more inspired by modern war instead of just "flying robots having sword battles". anyway, thats just my "unpopular opinion about mecha" acting up. I still enjoyed the Review.

honestly the first season was really good, season 2 was going down hill and the movie was utter garbage. as for the mecha designs (as this is just some random dude throwing his opinion out there), i truly think they sucked as bad as 90% of seed and seed destiny designs. when i think gundam the first one to come to mind is the EZ8 a big massive lumbering machine of war that design reflects its purpose as well as the gouf custom. i love big hulking machines of war that behave like machines of war of at least are trying to predict that..... the exia and company just make me think of the family guy episode of brian the dog getting overly fit and ankle just snapping. i truly do hate skinny ass machines. also... god damn aliens in gundam is just flat out stupid to me.... at that point its just generic super robot fighting instead of the struggles of humanity and conflict tomino brought forth. as stated in the video the movie was more akin to enders game then to anything gundam related.... this is why i do appreciate the whole build fighters/divers setting (minus the god damn retarded TRi-on 3 gundam bullshit) but refuse to accept it as gundam because gundam really isnt for children with all of its themes and hell look at the books for the U.C. timeline...... they are so god damn brutal it makes victory gundam fell all sunshine and rainbowish (hathaways flash). i find 00 to kinda sit in a weird spot where its trying to be mature but appeal to kids with the "look shiny robots that fly and do kung fu" none sense. like i stated the story (for the most part) is good same with the characters but wasnt really sold on with the mecha due to my prefrence (plus i hate gimmicky mechs with a few exceptions like Nu gundam)... anyways.... well done on the video sir its a great summery of the good and really bad parts of 00 gundam (i know this comment is sorta all over the place i was hyper tired when i wrote it)

Well cbs end all war by force is kinda a ploy to unite the world. And the members of said organization kinda took in all the nonsense XD. S2 was a different matter, innovator plotline was weak. The direction took lighter hearted zeta turn. Movie was good after the 3rd watch somehow. Els well being fun, kinda opens up plot holes. Yea i think movies dont give enough time to do more. Srwv fixes a lot besides 00. Yea its still my favourite gundam. Eh dont pay mind to the fandom too much.

Honestly it took my friend begging me to give it another shot for me to watch all of the 00 universe... I know it's a " oh c'mon really?! For me the rest of the supporting cast saved the show for me.
