G Gundam was the first ever Gundam series I ever got into. It was, for me (like many others) the first series from the franchise I ever saw. And it's funny how things work out, but Domon's English Voice Actor, as well as the English Voice Actor for Master Asia would go on to voice Megaman X and Sigma respectively in the Megaman X series. The irony is primarily stunning to me since I've been an avid Megaman fan since I was about 7, which coincidentally was around the same time in my life when G Gundam episodes were airing on Toonami. From that time period I actually specifically recall a scene in an episode that was on Toonami where Sai Saici sees Natasha having stripped down to her underwear before she goes swimming, and inadvertently drops a spoon he was eating with at the site of it. Which unintentionally alerts her of his presence and she nearly shoots him as a reflex.
I don't get why you said "America the Beautiful" being the song Chibodee's mother sang to him is cringe? It's honestly a perfect and fitting song for that. The earth colony for USA is ravaged by the fights but still has the natural beauty and it's a place Chibodee loves and takes pride in. It's way less silly than his mother's song just being a Japanese song that I'm guessing was just made for the show. I dunno how it's "less cringe" than a choice that feels more out of character for him...
@@seficloud it sounds like that was what Bonsai Pop was trying to infer but it just seems really stupid to act like it’s cringe for Chibodee a character with national pride to… have National pride.
@@Nightman221k maybe he meant that the Japanese singing sounded less cringe. But I don't think he likes G Gundam as much as he said he did in the intro. Most of his commentary sounds like he's making fun of the anime instead of having fun with it.
To this day I’m the only one allowed to touch the music, I’m really picky about it and put a lot of time into it. It’s nice when people notice the songs 🎉 This one took five hours and 84 songs, it’s got Grandia, tales of, ikaruga, Ys, Yakuza, a bunch of stuff from old Japanese shmups, godhand, metal gear, etc. I have fun with it
Shining, Burning and Rise are all actually pretty Japanese coded. Colors evoking the symbol of the original gundam aside, take note of their resemblances to samurai with hteir armor and notably helmets. Shining in particular having a solid Kabuto, and God Gundam's backpack evoking a sort of Rising Sun motif. There is more to them, but don't think it's the other colonies that got the treatment!
Great video. Was a little intimidated by the length but I was thoroughly entertained by the whole breakdown and now I want to rewatch G Gundam again for like the fourth time.
I'm literally in the middle of a re-watch of G Gundam right now, and this video got recommended to me this morning. This video was amazing, and the breakdown of why it can be both loved and hated by so many simultaneously was incredible. As somebody whose introduction to Gundam was Wing, I personally love this series. It's wild, zany, and just downright absurd, but in the most incredible ways possible. Fun Fact: "Schwarz Bruder" literally translates from German as "Black Brother". So understanding German actually spoils Schwarz's identity the moment he's introduced. Also, Rain is best girl. Allenby's got nothing on her. However, she does deserve than Domon.
The fact you used the Ikana Canyon theme from Majora's Mask when introducing the Dark/Devil Gundam is soooo fitting! Just had to let you know how much I appreciated that as a Gundam/Zelda fan, lol.
You see the problem you have back then with watching another Gundam after G Gundam is that, you went from G Gundam to Gundam Seed. The three AU's in the 90s were made and planned almost simultaneously. G Gundam might be the only one of its kind, but its DNA can still be found in Gundam X and Gundam Wing. Not to mention Gundam Seed is also still considered *very* different from the usual Gundam faire. It was a lot more Teen Drama than the usual Soap Opera that UC Gundam usually is. I don't blame you for not liking Seed because of your expectations from G Gundam, because I myself also disliked it initially even when I had expectations from a wider net of shows, being 0079 and Gundam X (If you're wondering, I have lightened up to Seed over the years. I quite like it now). In the end though what is Gundam? I think Shinji Takamatsu said it best when it comes to this topic. People (and also Bandai) are way too stuck up on the word "Gundam" and that people have certain preconceived expectations for a show bearing that name. In reality the directors of Gundam shows just approach them as they would any other anime. What Gundam is doesn't matter, because all it is is a vehicle to tell stories. What I'm saying is that if you haven't already make sure you watch Gundam X. I highly recommend it if you like G Gundam. (Edit: Oof sorry to say but the sequel you're talking about ain't gonna come out. That announcement was for the side story novel which already released its first 4 chapters. There is no sequel, sorry to be the bearer of bad news).
G Gundam was my childhood Gundam experience, as well. I loved the martial arts tournament focus of the story, and really had some unique Gundams I fell in love with. I'll never forget Shining Finger for as long as I live, either
My all time favorite anime, it inspired me to pursue physical fitness and work on my mental health. "This hand of mine is burning red" is my go to phase when I'm afraid. The GOAT of GOAT anime

I wad dirt poor and and toonami was all i had and i was blessed with g gundam and re-watches thanks to finding the dirt cheap DVDs at disc replay. It was crazy and wonderful then and everytime I rewatch its just as crazy as my first watch through. Very fun! Good video 👍
i dont think 'dumb' is supposed to be insulting here. i call its always sunny a 'dumb' show even though its very meticulously thought out and crafted. its more the ethos of these shows has a very 'lets get even crazier' vibe to it that, when you actually look at an episode synopsis, you think 'this is so out of left field and stupid and insane, how did they even pull this off?' a good dumb show is hard to make, if someone uses dumb to compliment a show its with reverence
@@musicobsessive123 Yeah crazy would be the word I would use. But I understand what you mean. You might even be tempted to call this video itself dumb in the same sense.
Double comment for the algorithm, the shows director has gone on record saying a number of the gundam designs were made outlandish on purpose to mess with Bandai. Bandai kept making demands and requests regarding the mecha to the point of pissing off the team. Windmill Gundam, for example, was made a a joke that the crew thought was so funny. Bandai was apparently much more hands on with Gundam Wing because of it
The VR treadmill esque manner of piloting a gundam always made the most sense to me as a kid. Decades later, after piloting a multitude of construction and mining equipment, it still makes the most sense. The amount of control points needed to articulate an arm, bucket, and pivot on an excavator is enough to require both hands and feet. Imagine the jump in production times if real world modern machinery used nano-tracking sexy suits. Not to mention the drop in uncle Bob's cardiovascular incidents now that he hits the gym after every shift to maintain that suit-ready physique.
It didn’t even make any sense to throw that in. Yeah, the nations representing them would want their fighter to represent them well. How is that fascist? It sounded like he just wanted to force in buzzwords to act haughty and holier than thou about a 30 year old anime.

Oh, didn't you know? Because being proud of your country, especially if it's the US, is cringe, apparently.
@@seficloud yeah. It did feel like he didn’t really care about the characters which is a shame cause they’re so endearing.
God forbid a person, let alone a fictional character written 30 years ago, have national pride.
"Try not to get too libbed up about it" as a leftist I'm stealing this phrase LOL
Just popped a random Grandia 2 fight song in there. Thought we wouldn’t notice. But we did.
He did it with Ys, wild arms, and Castlevaina in previous videos too fun to see how many other people go all "Hhheeyyy thats x..." in the comments
To this day I’m the only one allowed to touch the music, I’m really picky about it and put a lot of time into it. It’s nice when people notice the songs 🎉
This one took five hours and 84 songs, it’s got Grandia, tales of, ikaruga, Ys, Yakuza, a bunch of stuff from old Japanese shmups, godhand, metal gear, etc. I have fun with it
@@Bonsaipop always love the mvc2 tracks lol
However, she does deserve than Domon.
fr Rain deserves better
G Gumdam is one of the best complete series I've seen in anime.
Commentator doesn't have a basic understanding of politics and culture, and tries to analyze the politics of story. Worthless.
Such a fun video to work on
Good job!
This was my first Gundam series. So glad to see a video like this for it.
lol the BGM suddenly hit the Capcom Fighting Collection menu music
The Devil Gundam was the coolest thing I'd ever seen when I was 13. And it still kinda is
My all time favorite anime, it inspired me to pursue physical fitness and work on my mental health. "This hand of mine is burning red" is my go to phase when I'm afraid. The GOAT of GOAT anime
I remember watching this show right after graduating highschool.
I deff started with wing , but G gundam was sooooooo much fun
G Gundam is essentially If someone mixed Gundam with early 90s fighting game characters, considering all the stereotypes.
The Vegeta bit from team four star 🤣
What we learned as an audience is that the Sekiha Love Love Tenkyouken is the most hype moment, and special attack in anime history.
The didn't mind the design of the Tequila Gundam. But the design (shape) of Neo Mexico's space colony is another matter 😂
Gonna watch twice. Once at work on my phone, then again at home on the big screen because Bonsai Pop and G Gundam deserve it!
Oh, wow. Another plot summary!
The show isn't dumb it's a cartoon. It's not supposed to be Shakespeare. But I must say it was a great very detailed summary. Thanks!
i dont think 'dumb' is supposed to be insulting here. i call its always sunny a 'dumb' show even though its very meticulously thought out and crafted.
its more the ethos of these shows has a very 'lets get even crazier' vibe to it that, when you actually look at an episode synopsis, you think 'this is so out of left field and stupid and insane, how did they even pull this off?'
a good dumb show is hard to make, if someone uses dumb to compliment a show its with reverence
@@musicobsessive123 Yeah crazy would be the word I would use. But I understand what you mean. You might even be tempted to call this video itself dumb in the same sense.
it basically tries to parody wuxia movies and doesn't take itself too serious which helps that show.
"Don't worry about it" G Gundam in a nutshell, and we love it for that.
which ironically, most of the stuff he called that out for, did matter in the grand schemes of that show.
You hit me right in the nostalgia. You got a sub, friend
Bandai was apparently much more hands on with Gundam Wing because of it
Glad I'm not the only one who let this albeit junk food anime hold a special place in my heart
i’m putting together a god gundam kit while watching this lol
The VR treadmill esque manner of piloting a gundam always made the most sense to me as a kid. Decades later, after piloting a multitude of construction and mining equipment, it still makes the most sense. The amount of control points needed to articulate an arm, bucket, and pivot on an excavator is enough to require both hands and feet.
Imagine the jump in production times if real world modern machinery used nano-tracking sexy suits.
Not to mention the drop in uncle Bob's cardiovascular incidents now that he hits the gym after every shift to maintain that suit-ready physique.
Not to mention getting to wear fetish wear at work
You can wear anything at work if the uniform is a jumpsuit.
10:31 nationalism is ok and patriotism isn't fascist
It didn’t even make any sense to throw that in. Yeah, the nations representing them would want their fighter to represent them well. How is that fascist? It sounded like he just wanted to force in buzzwords to act haughty and holier than thou about a 30 year old anime.
I've been waiting for this one for a while and I'm glad it's finally here. ❤
don't forget bonsai pop's PODCAST the Bonsai PopCast!
