the original japanese actually had a 10 year old kid voice Al. The commercials for the 25th anniversary rerelease had OG Al come back and say "Bernie, I haven't forgotten you". That alone puts the Japanese VA over the top for me.
My favourite moment is when Al looks towards the Gundam, and there's a beat where maybe he starts to think about hating the Gundam, and then he sees who's inside and that really just destroys him and the rest of us right there.

I'd wager my left nut that the Cyclops team were sent into Side 6 by Colonel Killing deliberately under-staffed, because when the mission fails, he's not bummed out in the least, and he giddily goes off to prepare a fleet to nuke the colony, killing his superior in the process. He wanted the team to fail so that he can have an excuse to use nukes, hence why he sent in a small team that already failed once into what amounts to a suicide mission, because he doesn't want it to succeed, and he just wants their failure as his excuse to use nukes. "Well, we tried it the covert way, and it failed. Let's go nuke a colony, boys!"
Also, Killing is the clear antagonist of the mini-series; he was portrayed as undeniably evil and sinister; shoving a rookie like Bernie into Cyclops Team as an insult to Steiner goes to show that he doesn't give a damn about Bernie or Cyclops Team. It was his decision to send Cyclops Team to the Arctic and to Side 6 which kicks off the events of the story, and his decision to use nukes is what pushes the final confrontation between Bernie and Chris. If he did none of those things, Bernie and the rest of Team Cyclops might've lived to see the end of the war.
How ironic that the VA for Solid Snake voices a character would have to infiltrate a space colony to destroy a super-mech in the Gundam franchise. But, regarding female Gundam pilots, Zeta Gundam had Emma Sheen and Four Murasame as Gundam pilots back in 1985, so they were there before Christina Mackenzie, who debuted in 1989.
Good news from the novelization, though; the novel had Bernie survive. So he might actually hook up with Chris one day. But the anime version of Bernie, well, it's as the coroner said-he's nothing more but a pile of hamburger.

I met David hayter at a con recently and had him sign a trading card for the Zaku Bernie piloted, he loved talking about his role in gundam and hoped he could do another gundam project in the future or possible.

I mean, the show practically _begs_ for it. It subtly uses hamburgers to foreshadow Bernie's ultimate fate, where even his _last meal_ is a hamburger.
And then rubs it in our faces that we should have seen it coming this entire time by calling all that remains of him hamburger meat.

0080 has always been one of my favorite Gundam stories. The Summer it was released in Japan, i happened to be there. I managed to colelct the first 5 of the hardcase VHS with the awesome liner books and was heartbroken to find out that the last episode of the OVA would be dropping on my last day in the country. My host mother was an absolute hero that day, making a side trip to the local video store for me to purchase that last episode in the hardcase before driving me to the events ceremony that would see me offout of the country. Remember, this was the Summer of 1989 and so it was a big dela for me to have scored these and would have been a nearly impossible feat to acquire that last episode once I was back in the states.

I watch this series when it came out in 1989 when I was 9 years old. There are a lot of things happened in the year. There has the tiananmen square massacre, the break-up of the Soviet Union and the 0080. As I was a 9 year old boy, same as Alfred that I feel war is very cool especially there has the First Blood Rambo series that make vietnam war is a cool thing. Watching 0080 as my first gundam series without knowing what am I getting myself into is a big crush in my mental. I remember I first got introduced gunpla by my cousin. Bought an SD version of the NT1. And I was watching the series with my little SD gundam NT1 with me on the side and expecting some big mecha fight from the anime. Completely unexpected what it has came out. I got a small depression for a week or two. The impact on me was big.

In Gundam, the space colonies aren't _going anywhere._
They aren't colony ships headed off to seed life on a new planet; they're just territory floating in high orbit.
That always seemed weird to me, surely with the technology on display they could go far enough away to escape the Federation.

I'd say Zeta Gundam set the stage for what Gundam became as a franchise. The original Mobile Suit Gundam and the One-Year War was more of a test bed and a prelude, although they kept going back to it because of how iconic it was. But Zeta Gundam was when the franchise finally got its wings since Tomino was allowed to do whatever he wanted, whereas with MSG, it was tragically cut short because it wasn't doing so well in the ratings. There was even supposed to be a battle between Amuro Ray and Gihren Zabi, which was alluded to when Amuro noted that his true enemy wasn't Char, but was someone from within A Baoa Qu.
Also, the novels, which show Tomino's real vision for the series, it had the GMs be surprisingly durable when compared to the Gundam, Amuro gets killed, and Degwin Zabi of all people survives the conflict, apologizing to Artesia for killing her father and usurping his regime.

    awesome review!
Warpocket is another great gundam series. i think it succeeds in the message of "war is hell" more so then most of gundam.
a small event that keeps the cast minimal, helps make this very personal. the smaller scale compared to the rest of gundam helps make it so that all the actions and combat is much more significant. when a mobile suit hits the city we see the people who are victims. sure a "colony drop" is more horrific with shear numbers , but with fewer people hurt the more it hits closer to home. few deaths is a "tragedy", many deaths is a "statistic"
for me, the reason its most successful at this is that the soldiers and pilots are adults and also trained. the "child perspective" is with AL. the soldiers, even the young bernard and gundam pilot are already part of the military. they understand their roll in this conflict. we are not getting the average gundam "im a kid/young adult who is thrust into war and must fight", we are seeing soldiers doing what they must while the child watches from the sideline.
no matter how much most of gundam tries, when i see the super pilot kids winning wars, i lose all sense of realism. the message of most of gundam is "war is hell", but that message rings hollow because of this trope. i dont care for super empathy piloting powers, i came for realistic war drama with mechs. im tired of the ubermench child soldiers trope, i came for war. war in the pocket gives me war and a well executed "war is hell" message that actually hits hard. i genuinely feel bad for AL, i hope he gets all the therapy...in comparison if i have to hear yet another teenager lament that they have to fight i want to go all "bright noa" all over their annoying faces.

Yutaka Izubuchi is definitely one of the GOATs as far as mecha designers go. Matter of fact, his design work, much like Shoji Kawamori and Masami Obari, definitely has that 80s heavy metal album cover aesthetic down to a tee. Hell, the Kampfer definitely belongs on the cover of a Megadeth album for one.
