Wilco - Ashes of American Flags

- The cash machine is blue and green
For a bundle of twenties and a small service fee
I could spend three dollars and sixty-three cents
On Diet Coca-Cola and unlit cigarettes
I wonder why we listen to poets when nobody gives a fuck
How hot and sorrowful, the machine begs for luck
All my lies are always wishes
I know I would die if I could come back new
We want a good life with a nose for things
The fresh wind and bright sky to endure my suffering
I'm a hole without a key if I break my tongue
Oh, speaking of tomorrow, how will it ever come?
All my lies are always wishes
I know I would die if I could come back new
I'm down on my hands and knees
Every time I hear a doorbell ring
I shake like a toothache
Every time I hear myself sing
All my lies are only wishes
I know I would die if I could come back new
I would like to salute
The ashes of American flags
And all the fallen leaves
Filling up shopping bags
Nels Cline's solos are a thing of great beauty... perfect fit for Wilco.
Pure atmosphere
One of my favorite bands in my favorite venue in the world. I love this song.
It's amazing how beautiful this film makes the rugged concrete landscape interspersed with miles of greenery covering the midwest seem almost beautiful. And this song just knocks me on my behind when I listen to it. Wilco has so much edge and melancholy on YTF. It's a thing to behold.
I write songs from time to time, and to be honest it's songs like this one and Like A Rolling Stones that keeps you from stopping - they drive you to try to even attempt to match the genius they contain in few words and the feeling of the instruments. So I'd like to give an ambivalent "thank you" and "why must you be so perfect" out to Wilco. That is all.
Every line of this song is true.
This is so cool and loved it. I've just watched Laurie's unboxing and immediately visited here. Glad to know you. My red button number is #90. I will look forward to more of your beautiful performances. Cheers! JJ from Korea

Agreed. Great band.
really hurts that i just saw Wilco and due to curfew they had to cut this one song from the setlist. Still haven't witnessed this live.

The best!!
For those Dead Heads out there....I think the outro of this song could be a beautiful ending to a Stella Blue.
ingenious.
they're called crotales, they're like miniature tuned cymbals
after watching this video, my urge to rock a cowboy hat is strong.
hope jeff isn't suffering so much these days with the pain and drugs, should try to avoid that evil aspartame diet coca cola shit.
Wilco? Wonderful. Nels Cline? Special.
@dbernhar Yo también!
amazing, nels
reminds me of coney island baby
@simental9 Yes.
@333ThirdPlaneT You should just let everyone enjoy the music they want to enjoy.
Jay was actually a really nice guy.
It's pretty good, but I actually like the solo and ending from the "Kicking Television" version better. Such an incredible song, though.
@simental9 Yes
Is that the name of the song? (Ashes of American Flags.)
Thumbs up if this song made you want to get this DVD.
i love this video. my favorite version of my favorite wilco song, if only they could take the cymbals out!
Halo my freind
All my lies are always wishes...
Cain's Ballroom represent!
Anyone know what the thing the drummer plays is called? It sounds amazing!
@takeittothemall I got mine already :-P
absolutely immense. much as i love the songs on yankee hotel foxtrot they all sound infintely better live. agree with the below poster- too much distortion on vocals and guitar
Anyone know what footage this is from? Can we buy the DVD?
And on the eighth day god created Nels Cline...
nels cline made fun of me for being a teenager.

@six4cal he was a fantastic musician, but he was also an over-bearing jerk, who may i remind you sued wilco
Your response is dripping in irony. Try being respectful to a creative artist.
