The first time I heard this song... I'd driven about 40 miles to the 24 hr Walmart to purchase this album a little after midnight. I blasted it on the way home to Ashland (Oregon)... it was a cold summer night... my jaw was in my lap the whole ride... Nothing compares to hearing this opening gem on that gorgeous, perfect drive. Everytime I hear Wilco, I think of southern Oregon-- driving to hot springs, mountains, rivers, listening to amazing music...
I heard that Tweedy's totally fucking epic solo on this song is a "musical transcription" of a panic attack. As someone who's been having those for years I can attest that that is exactly what it would sound like if it was shreded out by a motherfucker of a guitarist. Jeff Tweedy is a goddamn genius.
One of my all time favorite guitar solos. The 'panic attack style' is pretty derivative of Neil Young so genius might be going a little far but Tweedy is a hell of a guitar player and sort of underrated. He did some spectacular things with tone on that album. Better fit for Wilco than Cline!
Can you imagine having a lead guitarist as good as Tweedy in your band... and then adding Nels Cline to it because you just weren't satisfied with how unbelievably great your band already was? They work together so unbelievably well!
I saw them at the summer stage in Central Park two very hot days before A Ghost Is Born was released. Jeff said "I hope you guys like this, it's a WIP. (Work in Progress)" Then he began it softly like this clip, and when the rest of the band kicked in, I did cry. So fully agree. Oh, PS. Sonic Youth opened those two shows.
Saw then live right before the album dropped as well. Played this song I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Melted my face off. Also heard “spiders” for the first time and was just blown away. Did 2 or 3 encores! Ended w “the late greats”, loved that live as well. Came to the show a casual Wilco fan knowing a few songs. Bought every album a few days later. To this day one of if not the best concert experience I’ve ever had. I had front row seats to AC/DC So that’s saying a lot.
I love how Jeff absolutely shreds on this. Then decides to get a full time solo guitarist for the _next_ album and we only ever got two tracks where he plays a relatively wild solo. That isn't sarcasm, I genuinely love it. Only somebody with absolutely no ego could do that for their music.
Go see it live. If you die, you'll die happy. I bought front row seats for them...pricey but worth every single cent...best concert of my life. I cried during "Whole Love"
This song is basically one long guitar solo. It reminds me of Neil Young's Cowgirl in the sand, not just because it's one long solo but also because of the soloing style.
you can tell its a tweedy solo actually. its melodic and fucked up just like his writing. its a beautiful solo every time, every time he does it a little differently but stays in this emotional pocket.
@SufjanSays I'm getting tired of Nels getting all the guitar credit in Wilco. This song is definitely Jeff Tweedy's masterpiece. A Ghost is Born came out before Nels even joined the band. The prominent guitar you're hearing in this song is Jeff. Fucking. Tweedy.
And he says the amazing pinch harmonic vibratos that add so much on the album were part of him trying to be the only guitar player in the band. Or learning how to be a lead player. He said so in Learning How to Die I believe
No one talks about John Stirratt tearing this shit up, laying it down, and then tearing it back up again. Gosh. Listen to it with headphones and the bass cranked.
@SufjanSays The solo is Jeff Tweety's, c'mon. Jim O'Rourke told him the he needed to improve his guitar playing. Do some solo shit. Then Jeff came up with this. And then I kind of fell in love. This is perfect. It's not technique. It's passion.
@ZRN959 Wil. Fucking. Co. is right. Nels rules. Jeff rules. The whole performance is pretty unbelievable. Right here, this is meaningful, engaging, emotional, loud, fucking music! They are a real BAND in the way that so few these days are.
Ive come up with the perfect follow up song to this perfect song. "At least thats what you said" into Airborne "Live it up"(long version) if anyone could seem these 2 together on a youtube ill die happy.
@kdc12321 You're absolutely right. It goes without saying that Nels is amazing but this is really a showcase for Jeff. Funny the "Nels. Fucking. Cline." comment on this video of all Wilco videos.
+Andrew Meyer Yes and no...Nels has said that he thought on A Ghost Is Born Jeff really came into his own. And he loved the album. He also stated that if he was asked to join during Summerteeth he would have declined, he felt it was to poppy, or surgery, for him.
I've having a hard time remembering...damn, it was only like a month and a half ago. but, I'm thinking either rolling stone or in the little book that came with the four disc wilco set. sorry, I will try and find it tho
+Matthew Berry bummer! well, if you can't find it or forget about it...it's cool. i vaguely remember reading (watching?) something about nels' appreciation of Tweedy's guitar playing and what you were talking about seemed familiar but a bit more fleshed out. Thanks "Either Way"
I found it in the booklet with their four disc set 'alpha mike foxtrot-rare tracks 1994-2014'. On page 36, Nels discusses how he joined. I was partly wrong. He didn't say he wouldn't have joined wilco after summerteeth, he actually stated he probably would have. But he did feel the album was a bit too synthy/sugery. It's only a few paragraphs long, but a nice little read. And if you are a wilco fan and don't have this box set,I highly recommend it. Besides some great info on songs in the booklet, the music is stellar. Many unreleased tracks (live and studio) and alternative takes songs that made the albums
I bought Being There the day it came out, and I've always loved Wilco. That being said, these guys have gotten dumpy. I'm glad Glenn looks like Meatloaf now, and Jeff looks like a drunk hipster at a Neil Young guitar solo academy. I'll just listen to my LP's and remember the good old days....

Yeah, but you had to drive up to Medford to that Walmart.... never seen so many bad tattoos in all my life

That's a great story.❤
Thank daddy jim o rourke. Listen all down hill from Jim
Least that’s what u said

This is without question the best Wilco song ever
my dear god, that guitar section gets me every damn time
Most powerful song they have. I cry every time I hear it, and if I ever see them play this live, my life will be over.
I saw them at the summer stage in Central Park two very hot days before A Ghost Is Born was released. Jeff said "I hope you guys like this, it's a WIP. They played it at Red Rocks and I can't name a more favorite concert moment
Hello from 12 years in the future. I just saw them play it 2 nights ago in Melbourne. It was great.
One of the greatest songs ever. Raw emotion. This song got me through so many tough times.
I love Tweedy and Cline around the 4:00 mark - so loose in their expression yet so tight in their synchronicity. Amazing playing from both!
holy shit, this totally makes me respect tweedy more as a guitarist. he fucking kills it.
The guitar solo gashed all my emotions, shattered into thousands
These guys are so good at playing it makes me physically sick.what's remarkable is their timing and how effortlessly they seem to be playing.
Raw primitive emotion, much like a Neil Young solo!
Why no one's talking about Stirrat? He guides everything just perfectly
Adrián Calleros One of my favorite bass players for sure!
John is in many ways the heart and soul of Wilco...just ask Jeff...if he ever leaves....I don't ever want to think of that happening to Wilco
ok john, you don't need to post under aliases - we like you too...
Everybody in Wilco is tied for my favorite member of Wilco.
A Ghost is Born is Stirrat's melodic masterpiece. His parts are so fucking interesting on that album.
Go see it live. If you die, you'll die happy. I bought front row seats for them...pricey but worth every single cent...best concert of my life. I cried during "Whole Love"
nels adds such an underappreciated layer to this. tweedy rockin out too. gotta love it
Wilco...PLEASE COME TO CHARLOTTE NC...PLEASE....
Amen
This song is basically one long guitar solo. It reminds me of Neil Young's Cowgirl in the sand, not just because it's one long solo but also because of the soloing style.
Holy crap, I love these guys!
Amen
Didn’t realize Jeff could shred like that
you can tell its a tweedy solo actually. its melodic and fucked up just like his writing. its a beautiful solo every time, every time he does it a little differently but stays in this emotional pocket.
‘Emotional pocket’ that’s wonderful and pretty much sums it up. I’m stealing that
Glenn. Fucking. Kotche.
First-time enjoying this masterpiece here over the rockies, in midwinter/summer....😎

Gawd damn that was amazing.
Funny thing - there's no live version of this one better than the studio version.
@ZRN959 Wil. Fucking. Co. is right. Nels rules. Jeff rules. The whole performance is pretty unbelievable. Right here, this is meaningful, engaging, emotional, loud, fucking music! They are a real BAND in the way that so few these days are.
@jacqueline @🤘🤘🎸 🎸
Ive come up with the perfect follow up song to this perfect song. "At least thats what you said" into Airborne "Live it up"(long version) if anyone could seem these 2 together on a youtube ill die happy.

"OMN" - Oh my Nels!
Amen
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Maybe all you mean is "leave me alone" at least that's what you said....
@kdc12321 You're absolutely right. It goes without saying that Nels is amazing but this is really a showcase for Jeff. Funny the "Nels. Fucking. Cline." comment on this video of all Wilco videos.
@montedavis44 Saw them play it 5 times, They didn't play it at 1 concert of theirs that I've been to.
LIK DIS IF U CRY EVERYTIEM
then your biology teacher could be a good guy
Shesshhhh
I suspect Tweedy's (awesome) guitar playing had a lot to do with why Nels agreed to join up (among other good reasons I'm sure).
+Andrew Meyer Yes and no...Nels has said that he thought on A Ghost Is Born Jeff really came into his own. And he loved the album. He also stated that if he was asked to join during Summerteeth he would have declined, he felt it was to poppy, or surgery, for him.
+Matthew Berry sounds like an interesting read--where can I find the interview?

+Peter Woodke It's from the DVD "Ashes of American Flags"
+amber71dawn Dearest thanks!
@SufjanSays your comment maybe belongs elsewhere. Tweedy, without a doubt, owns the guitar on this song.
2:11
Jeff. Fucking. Tweedy.
Is God
Isn’t sad
I know unai
Nels. Fucking. Cline.
@SufjanSays Nels. Fuckin. Cline. is RIGHT!
@jacquelinedeepsearch that being said... 4:03-4:09 is really fucking cool. Wil. Fucking. Co?
