Yellow Rail calling preening sleeping McGregor Marsh June 13 HD VERSION

- Yellow Rails are rarely seen as they live deep in remote sedge marshes of the northern plains and they don't start calling until sunset. I waded into the famous McGregor Marsh of Aitkin County Minnesota to find this elusive rail. Several were calling all around, but it took an hour and a half to actually see one. I was tapping two rocks together to imitate their call and attract one to me. In the end, I had to go after it. Eventually I got to within 10 feet of a calling male, and he was so comfortable with my presence (and my flashlight) that he preened, called and even tucked his head into his back feathers and caught a little cat nap.

There’s one in Colorado right now! The sound of mosquitoes is making me itch!
Interesting! A fairly easy bird to hear, but extremely difficult to see :-)
Awesome video. We live on the North side of the, the side that is protected because of the yellow rail, these little guys are up all night being busy doing their thing.
Best to find them just East of 65 about a quarter mile and South of 210 on the edge of the marsh. Stop by and enjoy these amazing little birds.
Amazing footage! I am most impressed with your video. :)
