- If you were really into gift shops as a kid, you probably loved to look at all the shiny geodes. But those little geodes are nothing compared to the mother of all geodes, found is in Put In Bay, Ohio. So let's talk about how this geode formed and the gorgeous sky-blue celestine crystals that we find inside it.

I’ve been to Put-in-Bay multiple times, I literally know people who grew up on the island, and I’m so upset that no one told me about this rock

Went there years ago with my wife. We spent the day driving around the island on a golf cart, drinking many bottles of wine. We came across this geode that is part of a winery, went for the tour, and was jammed with 30 other tourists in this geode. It was absolutely gorgeous, but hot and cramped. After the tour guide gave his speech, and opened up for questions, my wife immediately asked in a thick Russian accent, “ YES WHEN CAN WE LEAVE “
This made a lot more sense once you mentioned the Russian accent
Did they turn off the lights at some point? Seems like "You've never seen the dark" is part of every cave tour. I've done the drinking part there plenty of times but never the cave tour.

My family took a trip up to Put In Bay when i was a kid; it's a really pretty area and the geode is genuinely as cool as you'd think. I'm pretty sure they still do tours. Good Rock.
My kids and I have done the tour. You can tell when your kids are nerds when they love this place.

I heard the SciShow intro and Hank’s voice from the other room and was deeply confused because I’m the SciShow watcher in this house. It turned out to be my 7 year old daughter who shares my UA-cam lol. I’ve watched SciShow for… well, as long as I can remember learning things on the internet, and there’s something special about knowing that my 7 year old will now get to experience that, too. I’d never watched the show with her because she usually isn’t into my infodump types of shows. And despite that, apparently she likes SciShow. Realizing she knows who Hank is when he’s been such an influential part of my own upbringing made me weirdly emotional.
Anyway, I just want to say thank you to Hank. For everything. And thank you to the rest of the SciShow team over the years who’ve put so much effort into providing these videos.
I would watch a Sci show video of Hank excitedly running around a geode.

Oh my god. I live in Put-in-Bay for most of the summer and I work at the business right across the street from Crystal Cave!! (Perry’s Cave which is a limestone stalactite/stalagmite cave) It is so surreal to see this video as a long time fan of the channel!!
I visited South Bass Island and Put-In-Bay in 2023 to check it out. It is definitely super cool, bucket list material! If crystals fascinate you, you will love it. Winery upstairs, gift shop also upstairs. They give tours in regular intervals. Those crystals are not very translucent, but definitely huge, light blue, and many have amazingly sharp edges.
I commend the owners for not ripping it apart to sell the crystals, but instead preserving this natural wonder and making it accessible for everyone who can pay to see it.
I've lived in Northern Ohio all my life and somehow never once heard there's a giant geode on PIB. Never really had any interest in visiting the island before but now I'm definitely going to have to plan a visit.
Seeing Hank again is what keeps me coming back. His journey to keep teaching throughout his challenges is downright inspirational.

What defines a geode exactly? Why isn't something like the The Cave of Crystals in Mexico the largest geode? Is a geode a cave but a cave isn't necessarily a geode? Or simply is a geode a type of cave?
Also, I've been loving the new sets over the green screen. It feels more like we're sitting down for a conversation rather than sitting down for a lecture and it promotes a comfortable learning environment.
I'd say it's about how it was created. Geodes are created in the way hank described in the video where the cave of crystals was made by another more complex process.

I've been to Put In Bay, It's funny because the winery and geode are under the cutest little house, you would never expect such a geode under that house.
This may be the first time I've heard chalcedony pronounced out loud. I've always assumed it was CHAL-suh-doh-nee, so when you said it kal-SED-uh-nee, it took me by surprise. You learn something new everyday!
You'd probably be fine your way. It has a couple of "in the dictionary" pronunciations, Hank's way is one, but the way I've always said it is another: "KAL-seh-doh-nee"

Ive heard multiple geologists use both pronunciations so i reckon its more of a tomato vs tomahto type thing.

I used to live about 30 miles east of there most mylife. Never visited the islands until I moved to Missouri and told my family about it and we took a vacation there. I wish I went there earlier, it's a beautiful and geologically rich area.

Never heard of this cave and I’m from Cleveland. They talked about the Metroparks formation, the glaciers, ice age animals and everything when we’re in elementary school. Plus Cedar Point is right across Sandusky Bay. Board of Tourism should do more imo

Sandusky has been something of a struggling town- lately they’ve been revitalizing though!

My great grandma had a tiny fraction of a huge geode in her house. The fragment was about as big as a 13 years old.
Not sure if the Cave of the Crystals in Naica mine in Mexico is larger, but some of the crystals are over 11 meters in length.

i think you're right. people saying "mines arent caves" but the place where the crystals were found was an open-space not produced by mining.
If a geode is large enough, it is a cave, but not all caverns that have crystal formations are geodes. It's about the way the crystals formed. That's why those spectacular selenite crystals in Mexico aren't considered a geode.
A couple of “crystal caves” at Joplin, Mo. One discovered by 19th century miners “225’ by 55’ by 15’ “ with crystals 2-3 ft around and 3 ft long and was open for visitors from 1908 to sometime in the 1930’s. This cave flooded when mining stopped and the pumps were no longer running. There is another currently operating show cave with the same name in that area that has more traditional formations.

Being a rock nerd as a kid I loved visiting the Lake Erie Islands. The caves on South Bass are cool, but I think the Glacial Grooves on Kelley's Island are best.
Yeah I'll never forget seeing those glacial grooves as a kid!
I live 15 or so miles away from Catawba Island and have taken both ferries over to South Bass Island a number of times
We have looked at that cave 2 times and climbed the monument to look around
IF you want to look at that cave it is best to go Tuesday , Wednesday or early Thursday
As Friday , Saturday , Sunday and Monday the whole island is over run with people
IMO a fun place to drink a few bottles of wine
Or look at the glacier groves
I go over to fish around the islands for bass and walleye
Sight seeing, drinking, and fishing, don't get better than that.

"Celestine" (or celestite) crystals can in found in (Silurian Age) rocks in the quarries in NW Ohio. Also, if you're into geology, the glacial grooves in the world can be found on Kelleys Island just SE of Put-in-Bay. The feature was almost completed mined out before being preserved.
A similar geode was found while building a highway here in WV. The highway was diverted around it (of course), but the cave was sealed and few are even aware of its existence.

Another massive geode you can visit is Pulpí geode in southwest Spain.
As far as i know, the Pulplí geode is actually larger

@@alaisn I heard it was the largest "visitable geode" was the spanish one, but the narrator did say that you can visit the Ohio one, and quick search on google, both come up within the first few entries to be the biggest. Guiness world records has ohio as bigger.
The visit is a must! You are left with a true feeling of wonder, because there must be more like it in that mine!

Ok. So I live 2 hrs east of this in Lake County. I've felt, FOR A LOOOOOOONG TIME, that we've been sitting on something under all this clay that'll blow everyone's minds but never had the means to explore!! When I was a kid in the 80s, all I did was, well, play with earth and I can just feel, with so many different places that I'd explore, somethings down there!! Something natural & awesome!!! ❤
South bass island is really cool. Unmentioned here is the fact that it also has Perry's monument, the third tallest monument in the country.
made a topographic model of this in school and included the monument for fun- it looked ridiculous compared to the surrounding area but was so worth it!
Peter Mungo Jupp explores how some crystals can grow instantly, like petrified and fossilized organisms. I also believe this happens to certain geodes. That’s why some have cymatic patterns in them. It happens when the frequency is locked in while being electrocuted. Fascinating stuff!
Jupp points out that when high voltage power lines get juiced by lightning, the surrounding trees will get petrified instantly! 😲
I've been to South Bass Island, but I never knew there was a cave.
When I was a kid my Boy Scout troop camped on the island for a few days.
One night, the scout master told us a scary story while we were huddled around a camp fire.
He told a story about a Native American who lost his head in a battle during the War of 1812. According to legend, whenever there was a lunar eclipse his ghost would go looking for a new head.
He ended the story by telling everyone to look up at the night sky. There was no moon.
I hid in my tent and did not sleep at all that night....
As a Northern Ohioan having been to Crystal Cave many a summer, it's still wicked cool. Indeed, do yourself a favor and head to Put-in-Bay. There are so many activities on the island and nearby islands to pique your interests.
We used to stop by there every time we went on a trip to Put-in-Bay in the summer when I was a kid - my grandfather (z''l) would go up there for summer teaching jobs at Ohio State University's Stone Lab and be put in a OSU-owned home for the duration, which us kids would subsequently visit, and Crystal Cave always had to be visited at least once.
Many years ago there was a "Mineral of the Month" club. Every month, they would send a small box with a mineral and an accompanying information sheet. It was a pretty neat learning experience for children.
Put-in-Bay (the town on Middle Bass Island is really fun. Rent a golf cart, check out the Perry monument, drink some wine. The cave is really cool but during the height of the summer season tours will be crowded. Treat yourself to a early or late season adventure.

Nope the winery is still there, you can tour both the geode and the winery in the same day.
Actually, yes, for a time. South Bass Island is full of Wineries. But most of them had to shut down because of Prohibition in the 1920s. Heineman Winery had the cave though, so they were able to pivot to tourism until prohibition was repealed in the 30s.
The mineral content of the soil probably helps them make some very tasty wine, actually 😂❤

I went here a few years back with my mom, being surrounded by crystals that big is super cool.
The extra tidbit that the geode cave is the reason that brewery survived through prohibition is extra cool.

I love how atmospheric and cozy the scenery in this episode is! The desk and office approach reminds me in a very good way of Carl Sagan’s “Cosmos,” yet wonderfully peppered with Hank’s enthusiasm. The camera change in the beginning zooming in on the crystal on the wood was especially nice, and the rock candy bit was a delightful touch 😄

Okay, I had not seen how much Hank looks like John until this video, in which Hank's hair is much more like John's than ever before. John is the eternal angst-laden philosopher; Hank is the energetic beacon of hope. They play off each other very well.

Amazing how nature makes its wonders over millions of years. The process is slow but the result is a spectacle.
I live on an island right next to South bass island. I went to crystal cave back in the 70s. The crystals were very clear back then. I went again last summer & was shocked how dirty & muddy the crystals looked. Fifty years of tourists tramping through the cave weren't kind to this amazing cave.

My folks took us to Put In Bay when I was a kid, and I remember calling all my friends (yes, that was an era in which you CALLED your friends. On a TELEPHONE. That was mounted to the kitchen wall! It even had one big dial that went around in a circle - there weren’t any buttons!) and saying “I don’t know…we’re going to some dumb island in Ohio or something. Have fun at Disney.”
…and then we went to Crystal Cave and everything was suddenly incredibly awesome.

If you go, go to Kelly's Island also to see the glacial grooves. As a boy scout I got to clean them up every year as a service project. Also been to Put in Bay but it was Christmas in July (huge party weekend foe 40-60 yr olds) and the cave was closed when we went

I've been to Put In Bay, spent 3 days on South Bass Island for my 27th birthday and never knew this was there.
This is where I grew up! Have visited the cave several times, usually on school trips. I can't recommend the wine they make there but the cave is cool.
Next up in my nightmares: that monster mouth cave drawing.
Went there when I was 13, on the way back the ferry was in a storm and almost went under. The great lakes are no.joke.
When I was in highschool in the 80's, me and some friends thoroughly explored a cave near my house in Tennessee.
I discovered a room that was about 4'x4' with about an 8' ceiling. It was like being inside a giant geode. It was full of huge clear and white crystals. At the time I believed it would be wrong to disturb it. If I could go back, I would have mined the hell out of it!!!
They have it concreted with rebar over the entrances now. I wish I had at least tried to get some pictures.
Paid for a cave tour here in Arkansas. During the question portion at the end, a gentleman asked how old the cave was. The tour guide lady replied, “it could be as old as six thousand years”

They still do tours! It includes a tour of the geode and the winery + a sample of one of their wines (or grape juice if you don’t drink). I used to visit every year for the Jr Bay Week regatta.

Wow, went there on a spontaneous vacation trip back in 2020 and had no idea they had a crystal cave there. It's nice to just drive on a golf car around the island.
Whew... the break had me worried.
Same... It had been too long since I'd gotten my fix. We had gone days without. After just 2 days I broke and had to watch old compilation videos in order to sustain myself throughout the seemingly endless length of the dry period.
But we're chillin again now.
I saw it in the 1960’s on a family camping trip to the island. Now I want to return!

I visited thar cave as a child and again last summer. Cool thing to do before bar hopping around Put-In-Bay.
there are a couple of caves in the California desert that are wall to wall crystals-it is one of many abandoned mines dug by individuals and then given up-used to dig through the piles of stacked dirt outside the mines to find old bottles-but yeah there are many like the one you describe that are like a giant geodes inside-
