We have Nuttall’s in our area. So Cal. One was just in our yard as I came upon this video! Very elusive. The size of a Scrub Jay.
Every morning when I let my dogs out I’ve noticed a drumming noise followed by a rolling call, and eventually noticed it was a woodpecker on my neighbors house, thanks to this video I found it’s a red bellied woodpecker :)
THANK YOU! I've been trying to identify 2 different bird calls for a month. Apparently many different woodpeckers like our trees!
just saw a pileated in our Decatur GA backyard this morning :) About the size of a largish crow -- very distinctive call (sounds like you're in a swamp) Super exciting!
Thanks! I'm going to pay more attention to their calls and not just the hammering!
Ohhhhh! Now I know what that rattle call was! For the life of me I couldnt figure it out. I love Woodpeckers!
DOWO and HAWO for my backyard list and all listed in that video for my life list no more, no less
Here in eastern North Carolina we have all of the woodpeckers but the red headed wood pecker which I saw my first one this spring!! I love your channel keep up the great work! 👍
Currently have a pileated woodpecker who goes on all day and all night. I don't know when they sleep!
We love our woodpeckers here in northeast Illinois.
The most common one that visits our feeders are the Downy, the Hairy, and the Red Bellied.
Nicely done, exactly what we wanted to identify what we heard.
here in AZ I have male and female gila woodpeckers feeding from my hummingbird feeder all the time. sweet video! 🐦 🐦⬛ 🦜 🦚 🪶 🦢
Thank you SO much! I knew it was a woodpecker calling based upon the drumming and the debris falling out of the tree, but I couldn't remember which kind made the very distinctive call. I'm pretty sure it is either a Piliated or a Northern Flicker. I now know what to listen for.
You’re welcome! Those two can be tough to tell apart
Another great video😊 Love the woodpeckers. We have Downy Woodpeckers, Northern Flickers and Red- Bellied 😮 All are wonderful and welcome 😊
I hear the pileated woodpecker in my backyard but have never seen one. I have many red bellied woodpeckers in my yard also. I live in northeast Texas.
After I listened to this video on my deck I heard either the flicker or the pileated woodpecker in my backyard responding to the call on the video. I’m still hearing it. 😮
That was a great video there Derek , are you going to do A woodpeckers of the West chapter .
In California there where only 2 of the woodpeckers there that I've heard and seen .
I’ve been using the Merlin app for identifying bird calls. It’s like Shazam, but for birds, not songs!😜
I have all of them in my woods except the Red Headed. The Flicker has been drumming for some honeys lately. I only get the Sap Suckers during the winter on my suit feeder. S.W. Lower Michigan
I just seen the pileated woodpecker in the tree in my back yard here in Dayton Ohio…he was huge..I never seen one in real life, immediately started taking pictures…the one with the laughing sound I’ve heard many times around my home but never seen it just heard it
That's very useful for identifying calls I hear frequently while hiking at Lake Kegonsa State Park. I've heard all of those calls but wasn't sure what was making them.
I'm in south central TX & I have Downy, Ladder-backed, & Golden-fronted woodpeckers in my yard year round. I've seen the Yellow-bellied sapsucker & the Northern Flicker around town in the winter. I would love to add Pileated and Acorn to my life list!
I've have seen 3 Pileated Woodpeckers in my backyard this past summer, and can now identify their call. Also have Flickers, Downy's, and Hairy's.
I heard and saw a Pileated Woodpecker today.
Nice! They’re so cool!
Here in our central Texas backyard, we have had Downys, Red-bellies, Yellow-Bellied Sapsuckers, Flickers, and most commonly, ladderbacks.
Yesterday I saw a red-cockaded woodpecker
I have had all of these at my house at some time. The downy and red-bellied are the most prevalent. The red-headed woodpecker is the scarcest one, unfortunately The yellow-bellied sapsucker only comes in winter. I love all of them! I
It's amazing how united states have sooo many woodpecker species😲🤗
I've heard all these woodpecker calls out in the wild. I've even heard the ivory-billed woodpecker call and saw it too.
Pretty sure I had a pair of red-bellied woodpeckers this spring, but I haven't put out more suet (it was so hot this summer I was positive it'd just melt) so I haven't seen them much. Have been hearing lots of drumming from one or more woodpeckers in the last week though! So maybe as it cools off I'll be able to attract them again.
And what sound does the Ivory-billed make? 😜
It makes a depressing tuba note whenever your crazy uncle sends you a pic claiming to see one

Have a woodpecker that likes our suet feeder. Can’t identify. It’s in the shade. Has red pronounced tuft on crown, white chest. Long and lean. White chest. It stays in shade so I can’t get a good picture. We are in Irving Texas in an old pecan orchard. Lots of pecans and acorns to eat.
It didn’t look like any of the ones in the video?
