Boreal chorus frogs calling their little hearts out.

- Boreal chorus frogs are common in snow melt ponds in early spring in Yellowstone. They calls are really loud in comparison to their size. Only the males call to attract a mate. They are unusual because they can freeze solid in the winter. The real trick is that they "defrost" in the spring and survive the thaw. Truly an amazing feat!

Yes! I think I finally found what animal is making those birdlike cricket sounds 24 hours a day in literally everywhere muddy with tall grass from Denver to South Dakota.
Most likely. These are SUPER small frogs.
We have many of these frogs that sing every year in the spring, lovely chorus!
There is a surprising variety of colors to these little frogs
I just found a male and female Boreal Chorus Frog in my basement. They must have gotten in through the drain lines somehow! Very cool frogs!
I can hear boreal chourus frogs croaking outside my window as I am watching this
I don't think they were really waiting for another to call or replying to each other. Only the males call. They are trying to out call the other males to attract females.
So basically this is a competition for the loudest "f**k me" call?
Found one of these today :) along with a Canadian toad #AlbertaCanada
This is not Quite the frog I was looking for... but close! Thanks for sharing this.
2024. Ford brought me here!!! Who else agree we must save these little fellas! Do it not for you but ur kids grand kids and their kids!!!
this gets mi frog MAD
That is funny Marie!
Reminds me of home
Found a pond full of these at Montara Beach
I just moved and there’s a canal very close by. I’ve noticed it will be totally quiet and then there will be one call, then another, then a huge swell of hundreds that tapers back down to silence. Is this a bunch of chorus frogs? It’s very different than any frog behavior I’ve observed before. I recently learned we have a specific type of chorus frog around. They’re lovely!
I would have to know where you live to answer that. Boreal chorus frogs live only in the U.S. and Canada in places cold enough to have lots of snow. They live in snow melt ponds and they literally freeze during the winter. One of my goals in life is to film one defrosting. I don't believe anyone has ever filmed that. You would never guess by their loud calls that they aren't much more than an inch long.
Epic Nature I’m in South Florida, so definitely not! I found something that says the Little Grass Frog (pseudacris ocularis) - the smallest chorus frog in North America - lives a little further down the canal. There is a geocache under 2 miles away in a nature preserve that talks about them. Does the “chorus” part of the chorus frog call sound the way I’m describing?
I’ll gladly take these cute tiny ones (we have a frog about an inch long that lives in the mailbox!) over the massive bofus!
Thanks Lindsay! I didn't know there was a chorus frog in Florida. I agree with you on the smaller ones versus the Bufos. We have a small one I keep finding in our big trash container the trash guys pick up. I keep telling it that it needs to find another home but I don't think it is listening to me.
@@JudyLehmbergEpicNaturethey really are tiny. A classmate of mine found one while we were at a state park last week and it had to be just half the length of my thumb. Super cute little frog.
Heheh
I went and caught a few this year.
