You sir, are THE GREATEST man that ever lived!!!!!! Last year I bought a patio umbrella. 4 months later the crank handle fell apart. I tried & tried & TRIED to fix the stupid thing & COULD NOT figure it out & tried & tried to get some instructions from the manufacturer but to no avail. I pulled it out a couple weeks agoto see if I could try to fix it again & the string BROKEcause it was completley frayed FINALLY I was able to get them to send me a string but I was on my own on how to figure out how to re sting the thing. I watched a BUNCH of videos, but it didn't tell me how to string the one I have & THAN, I ran across yours, It took me a few hours but thanks to your video, I FIXED IT!!!!!!!! I now have a working patio umbrella!!!!!!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!! :D

I have to say Skibum1500 had the trick to this. The finishing nail tied to sewing thread and dropped down over the pulley and down the shaft worked like a charm. I then used a needle and sewed the end of the thread to the end of the rope and pulled it down. It was easy to fish the thread through the handle hole at the bottom with a small hook made from a paper clip. Thanks. I don't think we could have managed to get it through the tilt without this tip.

I spent three hours and had a third of the tools I own up on the deck trying to restring a POS umbrella. The umbrella wound up in the dumpster, I am headed to town now to buy a new one.

I'm having the same problem with this video everyone else is. It doesn't address how the auto tilt works and how to restring thru this mechanism. Any help out there ?

    Great video great instructions. Thanks!
For those having difficulties finding the hole in the crank mechanism, here's what I did ...worked perfectly and quickly. It's a variation of another good reply in the Comments.
I used thread but instead of tying a finishing nail to it I taped a straight piece of wire from a clothes hanger. About 6 to 8 inches long. I was then able to drop this from The top. It only took a fuel up and down emotions on the thread for the wire to drop into the right area in the crank mechanism. When the thread appeared at the bottom, I tide the actual string to it and pulled it back up. Note, because of the length of the wire and not wanting to bend it, I dropped it from the very top of the tube, not from the side pulley hole. Then fist the string from the side pulley hole with a small wire bent like a hook. I hope this helps others.

THANK YOU! We had an awful time getting the cord to feed through, but after taping a straight 8” piece of coat hanger to some heavy duty thread it fell right through! Be sure to drop it down inside the silver tube as this fella says. Then I sewed the thread to the cord so that it easily pulled down. Another comment from someone was to use reusable adhesive gum (Stick tack) to the other end of the cord to get it to wrap around the top pulley wheel. This video has good instructions but it doesn’t give good enough descriptions or close-ups of the tricky parts.

As others have mentioned the video is helpful but mis-titled as it does NOT help get over the tilting mechanism in an umbrella which is one of the trickier parts. However, I just finished a successful re-string thanks to Skibum1500's trick that worked like a charm! Get some strong sewing thread and tie it to the cord. I tied a sewing needle to the end of the thread and that was enough to cause the thread to snake down the whole length of the umbrella tube (including the tilt joint). There was no way the regular pull cord was going to go through there. Once you get through that part, the rest of the video is fine. Thanks!

Regarding a tilting umbrella that is really difficult to thread the string/pull cable....here is the trick: tie a small finishing nail to sewing thread, feed it over the upper pulley. Allow it fall all the way through the shaft. Tie on your new cable to the string outside the pulley, then it pull the cable on through. It took me less than 5 minutes, and worked on the first try. Good luck. You may try it with the top in the tilt position, then feed the nail into the bottom after it comes through the top portion. This way you will know immediately if you are through the bottleneck.

It is not this easy on my auto tilt umbrella. I found it impossible to just push or drop the replacement cord down my umbrella pole through the tilt joint - the slot in the tilt joint is too narrow. Note: I used replacement cord identical to the original cord and marketed for this purpose. I have to use a technique shown or described in another tutorial - push a stiff wire from the pulley hole at the top, through the tilt joint until the wire comes out at the bottom of the pole. Then attach the replacement cord to the wire at the pulley end and draw the cord down the pole by pulling the wire out the bottom of the pole. Important! The critical and difficult part is getting the wire and then the cord on the "tilt side" of the hinge pin in the tilt joint. If the cord is not on the tilt side (i.e. the direction of tilt) of the hinge pin, the umbrella will not tilt when the crank is rotated past the point at which the umbrella is fully open. It can take multiple attempts at pushing the wire down the pole to get it on the tilt side of the hinge pin. One can verify that the wire or cord is on the tilt side of the hinge by manually tilting the umbrella pole at the tilt joint with one's hands to expose the hinge pin -- the wire should not be on the side of the hinge pin nearest you when you do this.

Great how-to video ! My umbrella breaks 2 to 3 times a year. The last time it breaks I decide to do it by myself but I have no idea if the cord was all on the inside or not.

It took me a while, but it was worth it! Mine didn’t have a cotter pin and it was very difficult to restring (had to snake a wire through with string attached) . I liked mine and did not want to spend $$ on a new umbrella!

What is the best kind of string for a large umbrella

  • @dc737

The thread and finish nail trick worked at getting down the inside of the pole, but is there different holes that the thread and nail can fall through? I got the string down all the way, secured the level correctly and cranked it up. But the auto tilt which worked a week ago before the original string broke will not budge. I tried to see if the design of the typical mechanism was only but could not find anything. Now I'm unwilling to do this all over again and just use it as a non-tilting umbrella which is too bad. The video should have spent more time on this critical aspect of the job, I believe.

Ski bum 1500 is CORRECT! The only way I was able to get past the auto tilt was by using his method with thread and a finishing nail. Although I WAS able to get the nail and thread to go all the way through I am not done as I now have to attach the thread to something bigger, pull that thru and eventually pull the cord through. My wife was helping me and we have been married long enough to know when to stop!! Will complete tomorrow.

Tip. Embed a medium sized needle in the cord end and drop it in from the top. I got through the tilt joint on the second try. Also, it helps to mark the proper distance to the tilt joint on the cord with a black magic marker. I did not even take the fabric off. Did the job in about 20 minutes.

Update. Taped the thread to 12 lb fishing line. Probably should have used the fishing line instead of the thread but it worked. Then taped the replacement cord to the fishing line and pulled it thru. Had to pop the silver thing that is riveted to the frame in order to get the knotted cord back into the frame. This took a LOT longer than the video but it did work!!

I drilled out the two dimples where it was staked, twisted off the bottom of the shaft below the mechanism, pulled out the mechanism, drilled out some more pins, drilled INTO the tilt mech so it will never tilt again, used an armorer's punch to drive the pin out, and threw half the internals in the dumpster. This allowed me to string the cord over the pulley down to the mechanism, insert the cord through the mechanism, press it back into place, and twist the shaft back on.
If this thing breaks again it's going right into the dumpster.

Quite frustrating to watch this video as the camera person isn't to keen on keeping it focused on what the person is explaining during the actual time he's actually performing what he's describing and the narrator himself gets his arms and body in the way to actually see the operation.
